Pioli To Chiefs, Uh, Not So Imminent?
This whole situation is getting ridiculous. The Boston Globe keeps on insisting that things between the Kansas City Chiefs and Scott Pioli are really heating up. Then the folks at the Kansas City Star counter by reporting that Denny Thum “Up His Butt” is saying that he and Clark Hunt just want to have a GM in place by the Super Bowl. Talk about the news being all over the place.
Personally, I think things lie somewhere in the middle. Negotiations are taking place and moving along somewhat steadily, but nothing is quite imminent. We all know by now that Hunt moves with the speed of a Special Olympics hurdler when it comes to personnel moves. So, let’s all take a deep breath and exercise some patience before Chiefs Nation’s collective head explodes.
Still, I wonder what the ripple effect of the Broncos hiring Josh McDaniels will be. If Pioli wanted McD to by his man, then that’s going to be another big obstacle that must be overcome.

Time for new Owners!
January 12th, 2009 at 7:56 pmSeems like Hunt is still interested in someone on the remaining playoff teams…..hmmmm….
January 12th, 2009 at 8:02 pmSeems like Clark is wasting valuable time. We know Clark wants Herm, but the new GM probably doesn’t. Now the new GM will be left with the option of keeping Herm or firing him and hiring a guy that might have been 4th or 5th on his list.
January 12th, 2009 at 8:05 pmThe Thum thing sounds exactly like what he should be saying in it’s vague-ness and political language…it means absolutely nothing
January 12th, 2009 at 8:39 pmJeremy, that is an excellent point as the Ravens are blocking everybody. Maybe he wants to take a look at DeCostra-Ryan as well.
January 12th, 2009 at 8:49 pmThe Jets are suppose to be hot after Ryan now. We shall see…
January 12th, 2009 at 9:01 pmAhhhh DeCosta – Ryan sounds delightful but Ryan is gonna be taken (unofficially) soon I’m scared…but, yes, the Ravens have cock blocked everyone to steal from someone the other day…
Also, there is so much going on behind the scenes all we can do is wait….Yaaaaaay
January 12th, 2009 at 9:05 pmSo who do we root for in the next round of the playoffs? Go Steelers? I just want this GM thing wrapped up already!
January 12th, 2009 at 9:23 pmActually, I’ve been thinking maybe Clark wants someone within the Steelers’ organization. Not a bad franchise to model a team after. Not a clue who he would be after though. Here’s to waiting and hoping for a good pick… wherever he comes from.
January 12th, 2009 at 10:25 pmDenny’s last name is pronounced “th-oom” not “thumb.”
January 13th, 2009 at 8:37 amAll I know is that if it takes until the Superbowl to get a GM, the more likely it becomes that next season will be a total waste regardless of who the HC is because until that decision is made, much of what needs to be planned for next season remains on hold. We’re losing valuable time here folks.
Another possibility regarding Pioli and the HC issue is that it could be that the coach he wants is not even on the market at this point. Holmgren comes to mind.
January 13th, 2009 at 9:31 amI just got a text announcing it is official: Pioli is new GM
January 13th, 2009 at 3:24 pmHot off the ESPN web site:
New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli has agreed to become head of football operations for the Kansas City Chiefs, two NFL sources confirmed to ESPN’s Michael Smith.
