Wake Me Up When It’s Over

Have the Chiefs hired a new GM yet?  No?  Ok.   Man, this anticipation is killing me…killing me.  Slowly but surely, all these rumors and false news is going to be the death of me.

Soap Box…

Mock Drafts are fairly worthless until the first of April.  I admit, like most of you, I scour the internet looking for the latest mock draft to see who others believe will be the Chiefs 1st selection in this years NFL Draft.  However, it doesn’t take me long to realize that most if not all of these people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.  Unless you are on a Chiefs specific web site, then the author of the mock draft is either copying what others have wrote or just plain guessing.  I actually saw one that had the Lions selecting Tim Tebow first overall.  Can you believe that?  Selecting an NFL halfback with 4th round talent first overall all. Crazy.

With the latest news that Sam Bradford is leaning towards coming out early this year, that leaves many Chiefs fans hoping the Lions won’t select the young man and ruin his life.  But what good is it doing any of us to look at mock drafts that have the Chiefs choosing Bradford come April?  We have to wait until free agency hits.  Have to.  What if the Chiefs hire a new coach, let’s call him Josh McDaniels just for argument sake, and this new coach, or Josh, wants the Chiefs to sign Matt Cassel away from the Patriots because he is familiar with the system he will be bringing to KC.  Or what if the Chiefs are 100% happy with Tyler Thigpen and what he showed he is capable of whether it be a new coach or Herman Edwards at the helm?  Do you really think the Chiefs are going to spend a first round pick, the number 3 overall on a quarterback?  I don’t.

(UPDATE:  ESPN’s Chris Mortensen has reported Josh McDaniels is the new Head Coach of the Denver Broncos)

So let’s just view Mock Drafts for what they are–a guessing game.  You have to wait until April 1st at the earliest to get a good idea of what the Chiefs will need, or better yet, what they didn’t get in free agency.  Right now, if the draft were held tomorrow,  I would say the Chiefs would/should draft Aaron Curry OLB out of Wake Forest.  Oops, there I go, guessing again.  Sorry.

Other Things…

My best guess is the new GM of the Chiefs is going to Mark Dominik  pro personnel director for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Just a hunch I have, no inside information, just like everybody else.  That’s one thing I will have to give credit for to Clark Hunt and his staff, the ability to keep the search for a new GM pretty much a secret.  No leaks, no rumors coming from the Chiefs front office, unlike the people up in Cleveland who apparently are unable to keep their mouths shut about what is going on, whether it’s true or not.  That should say something about the Chiefs organization and should be a selling point for prospective GM candidates.

I predict Larry Johnson will be traded to the New England Patriots for a second round pick in this years draft.  Remember it was the Patriots that dealt a 2nd round pick to the Cincinnati Bengals for a disgruntled running back by the name of Corey Dillon.  The same situation has appeared again and I look for the Patriots to jump all over it.  Unfortunately, I imagine LJ will have 3-4 more very productive years in New England with Tom Brady at the quarterback position, Bill Belichick the head coach and a locker room the Patriots pride themselves on.

Let’s just hope the Chiefs have to find out when they battle the Patriots in future AFC title games.

            BallHype: hype it up!

Perhaps some news tomorrow or Tuesday

Good thoughts Steven. Dominik would be a solid choice.

I swear I saw something the other day that ruled Dominik (specifically) out for the job…I guess I may have dreamed it…

I, personally, dont see anything impressive in that front office that would suggest him to be an interesting candidate…He is a local boy…and that is it…

I like Eric DeCosta if we can’t have Pioli…The Ravens have been one of the smartest front offices in the past few years…well, since they have existed…And I would love someone who has worked so closely with Ozzie.

The trade…sounds good, if they would do it…Which I doubt

kcchiefan56–I don’t think it would. I’m not sure McDaiels was Pioli’s man. Makes me wonder about McDaniels, I’m just glad Shanahan is gone.

Woody–I too like DeCosta…if they would just lose a freaking game, maybe we’d find out!

My conjecture is that the hang up in the negotiations with Pioli for the job have centered on Herm Edwards. Clark probably wants to retain Edwards and Pioli probably wanted to hire his own coach, likely Josh McDaniels. Because McDaniels is the new coach of the Broncos, I would expect the Pioli deal to fall through. Probably Dominik will be the Chiefs new GM and Herm Edwards will remain as the coach. All the goofballs who wanted Herm to have one more year will probably get their wish and we will be in for another disastrous season next year.

LJ should be traded to the Arizona cardinals for a 2nd round pick

  8. 8. kcdan58 Says:

The Card’s 2nd will be close to a 3rd after this weekend.

  9. 9. Double D Says:

kcdan58, are you suggesting the Cards are headed to the Big Show? Sorry, can’t see that happenin’.

  10. 10. kcdan58 Says:

‘Sorry, can’t see that happening.’…Let’s see, where have I heard that. Oh yeah, all last week.

  11. 11. Double D Says:

I was never real big on the Delhomme and the Panthers but I’ll give the Cards their due.

Truth is, I picked Philly and Ravens from the beginning. Don’t see that changing. McNabb, Jackson, Westbrook, and the Philly D will be more than the Cards can handle and then some. Major pound down about to happen out in the desert. ‘Fraid Warner & co will come out looking more like Wile E Coyote pairing up with a box of Acme TNT (Fitz & Boldin). Plan might seem clever at first but, well, you know how the story always ends. Mee-meep, zooom.

Just playing devil’s advocate DD. I too, had the Eagles and the Ravens (for the last month or so), but wouldn’t be surprised to see the Cards pull it off, much to the dismay of the Superbowl ratings gods. Besides, the ‘cardinal’ sin of losing to the Arizona in the playoffs might just be the catilyst we need to get # 5 back on the trade block.

  13. 13. Double D Says:

Fair argument (wishful thinking) on #5. Loss to the Cards or not, I don’t think he’ll come cheap or easy. I’m leaning more towards Losman personally.

  14. 14. woody Says:

    Keystone Bowl – Steelers – Eagles….

How can the Ravens beat the Steelers? The Steelers allowed only 15 yards to a legitimate rushing offense…The Ravens have not been that even (consistently). And they will blitz the daylights out of the Rookie QB….They can not win…

Eagles will likely overcome Arizona…even at home…

  15. 15. Double D Says:

There’s something gritty (and a little ugly) about the Ravens that has me seeing them take down the Stillers. Still, I’m going with the Iggles to take it all.

  16. 16. woody Says:

Ravens have got pretty lucky with turnovers…Which could easily happen if Ben has a bad day….It is very possible…but if both teams play to their potential I still see Pittsburgh winning…

The AFC team should easily beat the NFC team this year…But who didnt say that about Pats/Giants last year….

Anything can happen in the NFL…

  17. 17. Double D Says:

woody – I disagree on the AFC over the NFC this year. Eagles are the most complete team out there. I would rank Steelers as a close second but homefield has rarely been their friend in the playoffs. Ravens will somehow make things messy enough to fluster Big Ben into making a couple of key mistakes. I also think Flacco is on his way to becoming the better QB of the two if not there alreay. This game will probably foreshadow what is to lie ahead in that saga.

  18. 18. woody Says:

Like I said, anything can happen with the NFL…but I still think, to this point I have the Eagles at number 2 compared to the Steelers…haha…

They just haven’t shown consistency throughout the season…Pittsburgh has…and Pitt has the number 1 defense in the league to contend with…A solid running game has now shown up…they have big play guys down the field…Philly doesn’t have any of that (save an unpredictable and recently scrappy defense)….

But, they could very well be the 2005 Steelers of this year…Everything to this point is pretty much exactly the same….minus Jerome Bettis…lol…
