OK, so now I am starting to get worried about how poky Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is being in his general manager search.
Why the sudden change? Because I’m starting to worry that the Broncos are going to hire Josh McDaniels, partially as a you-know-what block move. As you all know, McDaniels is rumored to be Scott Pioli’s head coach no matter where he lands. A McDaniels-to-the-Rockies move while we’re taking our sweet ass time could flush our Pioli dream down the toilet. Plus, McDaniels is going to be a damn good head coach someday. It’s all making me very nervous. I really thought Pioli would be with the Chiefs by today after Mangini got hired.
Addicts, does Clark need to hustle his ass up in hiring a GM?

i dont think he is moving too slow as much as I worry he is not willing to give up a certain thing in order to get him….Clark knows more about business than me but I would think he would be willing to cut Herm loose to get the prize NFL Executive over the past few years….
Over on PFT, they got word that there will not be a Chiefs announcement on a hiring for a new GM over the weekend. Why would this be relevant? To report that there will be no news for a couple of days?
My take, there has been a signing, probably Pioli. Clark is classy enough not to leak it right before a big weekend of playoff football.
Could be a big Chiefs day on Monday!
Thanks for the scoop, Banny. I actually just saw that. Who knows if that means anything or not. Let’s hope.
Adam:
I am curious about your faith in McDaniels. Belichick’s coaching offspring haven’t done well. What makes you believe that McDaniels would be the exception? He hasn’t been a coordinator for very long.
Apparently, John Clayton said that Pioli isn’t coming to KC. On the radio today they said they had a source high up in the Chiefs organization that said they had offered a contract to Pioli and the only thing stopping it was Clark’s refusal to let Pioli have control over the coaching staff. If we lose out on Pioli because Clark wouldn’t let him have control over Herm the Worm’s future than we are screwed.
dbk301:
How about a source or link for the rumor.
No no no no no….
To be clear, Clayton said that what he interprets from the rumors that the Chiefs have offered Pioli a contract and he hasn’t publically accepted it yet is that he is leaning towards staying in New England…. It is LITERALLY speculating based on a rumor…
I personally think it is very possible there is a deal in place already and they arent announcing it til early next week….
I may or may not be in denial…
Neil Jones on 610 radio said he had a high ranking source in the Chiefs organization that told him the Chiefs offered Pioli a contract and that the sticking point was control over the coach. I’m sure they have podcasts of their shows if you would like to listen to the show until you get to the part where he said it. As for the Clayton comment it is on the Chiefs board on ESPN>
WE sorely need ArrowheadAddict leadership through these trying times, Thank you for being there for us.
THAT part of the rumor I believe…I also believe Clark is far too good a business man to let that hold this up if he truly thinks Pioli is worth it…Risk/Reward….
I just was clarifying the Clayton thing…which seemed like him just speculating because ESPN wanted him to say SOMETHING about it today…
I am almost definately in denial…oh no
dbk301:
I’m calling BS, because I’m sure only one person really knows if Pioli is going to be the GM at this point, and that is Pioli. I need more than someone pulling the “high ranking source” card to convince me. Everybody seems to know 10 high ranking sources from each team nowadays. The ESPN boards, don’t even get me started on that.
Here is the truth. We don’t have a GM.
I’m getting antsy just liked the rest of Chiefs Nation. It is time to get a GM and new coach in place. The Senior bowl is just around corner. We need to get an off season plan started!
Clark, if we hear nothing by early next week, GET YOUR ROLL ON!
I’m strangely nervous about Denver in this matter too. I don’t feel we should ignore Bowlen and his flunky traveling around interviewing HC-wannabe’s as though it can have nothing to do with our process. If Superman has Lex Luther then Kansas City has Denver*. And if Clark Kent thinks that his search is not intricately related to other like dealings in the NFL, or that others wouldn’t be of a mind to conveniently sabotage his efforts then he is naive. Hunt, I mean.
*You know our arch nemesis used to be Al Davis’ bunch. But frankly it’s been a long time since the 70s. There are reasons we aren’t competing on the field with San Diego these days, but they come and go. The old band behind Mike Shanahan has been the only other issue for us since Seattle went NFC.
Funny, I just mentioned on another blog a funny feeling about Denver’s search. Shanahan was a mega-watt superstar in the Mile High City until just recently. His firing is curious, and Bowlen’s fiddling with a bunch of assistants to replace him is just as curious. Unless he has a trick up his sleeve that could attract Pioli.
All that conjecture aside, the longer we go without any word is positive. Because once KC is out of the Pioli sweepstakes it will be evident. Either announcing that we hired him or silence right now is positive. So let’s continue with the conjecture. It’s fun.
Clark Hunt passing on a chance at Scott Pioli to stick with Herm Edwards would be like one of us passing on a date with Angelina Jolie to stay in a relationship with Rosie O’Donnell. I refuse to admit that. I can’t admit that right now. La, la, la…not listening…
Telling a GM who his coach will be is a Browns’ move. I hope Clark is smart enough to not go there. The new GM should have the ability to hire/fire the coach.
To think that our ownership would pass on Pioli because of Edwards is too depressing to think about. Fortunately the facts as we understand them now don’t point to that being the case. As a courtesy, when CP went out, classy Hunt wouldn’t necessarily slash the coaches too. If he is really “hands off” like everyone says he is, he’s not going to hire a GM and say “here’s your coach.”
Maybe Mr. Hunt isnt actually going to hire anybody. Maybe he wants to be the new AL Davis!!! Any thoughts?
Mr Hunt hired Mark Davis, son of Al Davis.
Well Adam if I were you I would be prepared to give Rosie a big ol’ fat kiss squared on her…lips.
I never heard Josh McDaniels was Pioli’s choice for head coach, I’ve always read and heard it was Kurt Ferentz.
Clark dad, Lamar, believed in hiring football people and letting them do their job, I hope Clark takes that from his father and let’s Pioli have what he wants. Regardless of who the GM is, I can’t see Herm staying, but the longer it goes on the more and more likely it looks like he will have at least one more year. I wouldn’t be too shocked if Pioli returns to his safe haven-the Patriots where he has been and will continue to be well insulated.
I truly feel that if he was coming it would have already been announced. Here’s why. He already has a great job and makes lots of $$$. He has been there for years and probably has tons of family and friends in the New England area. He has a wife and daughter that probably don’t want to give up their friends, family, and nice home. Procrastination is a very powerful emotion!!!!!! Plus the path of least resistence is to do “NOTHING”!!!!!!!! Be “Realistic”, why would he truly want to come to K.C.??????? Thats like asking “YOU” and “YOUR” family why don’t you really want to move to “BUFFALO”????????? Get the idea?????
Chuck P,, all you say can make sense except for some typical big market bias, and what may easily be in the mind of a relatively young power-driven achiever in pro sports. I don’t think Pioli is ready for a rocking chair on the porch, and I haven’t heard anything about him that says he would be highly prone to staying put because of the friends in his junior high daughter’s facebook. Heck, if he’s really pro-family like you suggest he might like to escape the constant drivel of the east coast city life and enjoy some home cookin’ from the breadbasket. (Didn’t someone say his wife was from Wichita?) I assure you, this two time NFL Exec of the Year didn’t get there by taking paths of least resistance doing “nothing.” By the way, building on what he has done, he really could have the opportunity at his relatively young age to completely cement his name as one of the all time great ones. There is one caveat about this achiever’s work until now: Will people recognize his unique contribution, or will they be prone to believing his NE success was only due to a perfect collaboration of certain great leadership, coaching, and other factors? If you don’t think that’s possible then you may not understand why old man Vermeil came to Kansas City. A power guy would salivate at the thought that he could replicate the Patriot success somewhere else.
I would be more concerned if I heard he was forever and hopelessly loyal to the Kraft family. Anybody hear that?
The Boston Globe reported yesterday that talks have heated up. I wish something would be announced so we could end all of the speculation. Here is the link.

I think Clark Hunt is taking to much time now. It was ok to be thorough at first but now he knows who he wants so lets go get him. There hasn’t been any other interviews scheduled to my knowledge so maybe we will here something tomorrow. If we don’t here something this week. Good luck, we are heading down the same path of mediocracy that we have been on for years. Carl Peterson’s middle name is mediocre. But maybe its the owners.
This whole thing is making me nervous, because since the passing of Lamar Hunt I have been totally underwhelmed with Clark Hunt’s handling of all things related to the Chiefs. Carl Peterson supposedly resigned two to three weeks before the end of the season so Clarky baby could “begin” the search for a new GM. Here we are two weeks past the end of the regular season and still no GM. There is a very real possibility that the hang up in this whole deal is Pioli being forced to accept Herm Edwards for one more year or no deal. Scary to contemplate, but a very real possibility.
To answer the question – yes, the longer it takes, the more problematic it becomes. Herm and all the coaches are in limbo and because of that, we don’t really have anybody putting any passion into scouting, free agency, drafting, planning etc for the 2009. If we’re going to get a new HC (which I assume we are) then we better do so right away because the viable options on that will become very limited very soon. Either way, there is a lot of work that needs to be done right now and the longer this takes, the more behind the 8 ball we get.
