Merlin’s Magic: I Was Wrong Edition
Well Addicts. Clark Hunt is going about his GM search the right way. The search is taking place mostly in the cone of silence. Unfortunately, that drives us crazy because we want news. Well for now, I am going to put off writing more on the GM search and do some retrospection. We love to remember the good stuff. The prospective draftees that we liked that made it with other teams. The free agents we wanted that looked good elsewhere. Rarely will we admit that yes, we liked Kendrell Bell or sure, promoting Mike Solari to offensive coordinator was the right thing to do. As the old saying goes, victory has a hundred fathers, defeat is an orphan.
Well Addicts, it’s time to fess up. What did you get wrong about the 2008 season? I will give you my two clunkers. In the category of the NFL, my clunker was Chad Pennington. A rag arm QB coming off of throwing shoulder surgery? No way would I have touched him. He made me eat those words. Good job, Chad. With the Chiefs, my big clunker was the LB corps. I really thought it would be a solid unit going into training camp. DJ, Nap Harris and an aging Donnie Edwards had a solid feel to it. Ugh, that was one turd of a forecast. Nap Harris never really showed up at all and soon was back with the Vikings. Donnie had a hard time getting out of the trainers room. DJ, well, DJ showed he may be a decent player, but not the impact player we all hoped he would be.
Those are my clunkers.
OK Addicts, it’s your turn. Fess up. What were you two clunker predictions (NFL and Chiefs categories)?

Good call, you wily ol’ wizard!
Picking Jacksonville and Minnesota in the Super Bowl and…
Probably thinking that the linebackers were OK as far as the Chiefs go. Turk McBride, even though he got hurt and was asked to fill in for Jared. Sippio, too, even though he never got much of a chance.
Since I said Sippio, I want all the Webbslingers to come out of hiding. A LOT of Addicts backed Webb coming into the year.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:04 pmFirst, I would say I was right about Solari, Bell, Pennington and so on…
But that is just to set up my wrongs…The biggest of which I would say is my quote to my father at the start of LAST season…”Dude, I just watched Napoleon Harris on NFL Replay and he made some plays. I think with him and Donnie back we might have the best linebacking corps in the NFL!!!” hahahahaha….boy was I wrong…He was over-rated, Donnie couldnt stay on the field and DJ is stagnant in the average stage….What a failure of a prognostication…
January 6th, 2009 at 11:07 pmI was a big Pennington fan, too. People get too caught up in arm strength. Out of the three Bs, I’m taking brains and balls over biceps.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:16 pmWas wrong about Matt Ryan – Was right about Clady
Still happy with Dorsey though.
January 6th, 2009 at 11:27 pmI was the opposite; right about Matt Ryan, wrong about Ryan “Retard” Clady. I guess his athletic prowess just completely nullified that utterly pathetic Wonderlic score.
And I also am still happy with Dorsey…for now.

January 7th, 2009 at 12:24 amclady’s idea of run blocking is falling sideways in front of the defender and rolling on the ground at their feet, it’s disgusting…get some balls…
January 7th, 2009 at 12:29 amI had it picked as the Chiefs going 6-10. And I thought I was being conservative. I just “knew” Donnie was going to blow some stuff up. As I have never been a Croyle-ite I kept shouting to make Damon our guy! Then they said it would be some guy from Coastal Carolina?!?! WTF! I had thought I was the only grasping at straws.
I watched much and read more and wasn’t happy with the Dorsey pick. Mitch proclaimed it a gift from on high, I felt sick. But in reality, Dorsey had a respectable year and learned alot I think. I’m still undecided as to his value at #5 overall. But I felt the same way about the Texans #1 the other year. Now Vince is sputtering and mummbling, and Reggie has a few flashes ever now and then.
Who would have thought a journeyman QB with plenty of miles on the wheels could lift the Titans to where they are? Kerry Collins was a wash at Oakland (thanks Al?!?) and steps in for Vince and BAM! You just couldn’t see that coming.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:47 amI looked at the schedule and was positive the Chiefs would win 6 games. Clearly, I was wrong.
January 7th, 2009 at 3:55 amI predicted 50 50 season was wrong about that but I let my emotions become involved.

January 7th, 2009 at 5:08 amI was wrong about Derrick Johnson and defense as a whole really. I thought DJ was poised to be a pro bowl LB. Now I think he is a good back up to come off the bench… if he’s healthy anyway.
Adam, Ryan Clady according to John Madden is the best looking LT he’s seen in a while. So don’t be so hard on yourself, you were right about two players. I think Albert will be just as good if not better in the long run.
January 7th, 2009 at 7:00 amI didn’t make a mistake…im frickin perfect!
Well one good thing did come of this. Next draft, I’m not gona have to hear Adam yap about wonderlick scores. How every LT needs an IQ of 138 and be half way to solving cold fusion.
The original MASTERBLASTER MASTERPLAN of completely tanking this season went better than expected. Herm did it so well hez gona get chit canned. I’m so happy. I even think picking 3rd is better than picking 2nd because we get 2nd pick in the 2nd and we still have a good chance of trading down with crabtree.
I guess you could say I did make one mistake…sorta. I thought Johnston was gona have a break out rookie season giving us 6-8 sacks. Woops. And, I wasn’t expecting our D to be this abysmal. I just hope our new D coordinator doesn’t switch to a 3-4.
I was also calling for Thighpen to be tared and feathered…nay…executed by firing squad, early on. But then again, who wasn’t. I still cant believe the great cock of the south emerged. Who knew? haha
January 7th, 2009 at 10:31 amWell, I was wrong about the defense getting better but right about the LBs being our biggest weakness.
The first glimpse I ever had of Brodie Croyle convinced me he would never last in the NFL. Instead of sticking with that first impression, I made the mistake coming into this season of thinking he deserved a chance to prove me wrong. I was wrong to doubt myself. Lesson learned.
I expected in excess of 20 sacks this season – way off.
Had no interest in Chad Pennington.
Liked Matt Ryan a lot, didn’t see Joe Flacco showing up as well as he did. Not a bit surprised by DeSean Jackson’s and Donnie Avery’s success.
Horrified by Thigpen early on, glad that the Chiefs stuck with him and developed an offense in which he could thrive. I was wrong on Thiggy.
I still believe I was right about pushing for Max Starks through FA. Had we had him, we might have been able punch in some TDs all the times we were inside the 5.
As far as my expectations with Chiefs’ draft picks go, I can’t complain much. The guys who played played about as well or better as I expected. Because of injuries, the jury is still out for me on Kevin Robinson. Given a little more time and the opportunity to develop, I think he’ll prove himself. Sames applies for a couple others I think – Johnston, Richardson perhaps?
January 7th, 2009 at 12:42 pmI’ll still talk about Wonderlic scores, MB. Clady is the exception, not at all the rule. Offensive tackles still averages the highest scores.
January 7th, 2009 at 1:06 pmI was wrong about a lot of things. I was wrong about Matt Ryan, but I still don’t think he would’ve had much success behind our O-Line early in the season. I was completely, utterly, dumbfoundedly wrong about our defense. I thought that this was the year we cracked the top ten, and worked our way into becoming an elite defense. Damn was I wrong. Although, I am at least happy that we had so many takeaways. If there is one spot of improvement on our defense, it is the takeaways, courtesy of our gems at CB. If we can add a pass rush and some capable run-stuffing LBs, we might actual;ly be able to make the jump to elite sooner rather than later. At least our lineman are pros at the hand-slap drill, haha.
But I was right on one thing: Thiggy Smalls. I wanted him starting after the preseason, I believed in him going into ATL (was wrong about that). But I saw a drive in the kid, a can-do, never-quit moxie that I thought showed leadership, which is what the QB position is about. And I might have been the lone voice calling for Thiggy. It was like pissing into the wind after the debacle in ATL, but I still help onto “hope”. He might not be the QBOTF, but I think if he can develop into a more traditional QB, he might be a more than adequate option in future seasons.
January 7th, 2009 at 3:07 pmI was wrong to think Webb would even get enough playing time at WR to put up any stats, but being on a roster still puts him ahead of Sippio, Adam LOL.
I was wrong about the defense. I thought we would be really good on D and struggle on offense. The defense had at times been very good in 2007, and I thought losing Jared was survivable. Whoops.
