Krans,

You must have read my mind, but I am suprised you didn't mention Savage. In the games I saw him return kicks he got more positive yards than any other returner, even Charles! I KNOW DJ would start in Pittsburgh, Baltimore or pretty much ANY team in the league. He may not get the sacks DT did, but he covers like Donnie MOST of the time. He needs help. I saw make some really good plays the few times he was in. Wasn't he hurt a lot this year. Not sure what jinx Herm has that his players start dropping like fly's. I disagree about Flowers and Carr though. I also might throw Leggitt in this one as well. They played VERY well for rookies. Maybe they didn't get 10 INT's and maybe they gave up a few big plays, but the few times the front seven actually put some pressure on the Offense, like they did most of the game here in San Diego, it makes it easier for them to cover guys. Next year should be Flowers and Carr's break out years, barring an injury of course. These guys are human you know.

Well i'll start by first saying who knows if Pioli is the right candidate but at this point his resume looks promising and hes the "hot" name out there but you make good points and we would never really know until he actually steps into the job.

As for the chiefs and players starting on other teams, you know over the years i've seen WAY too many chiefs players leave and become successful elsewhere. Look at the Vikings yesterday for example, Jared Allen Benny Sapp and even fricken Napolean Harris all starting and pretty much all making plays. Think back to what happened with Rich Gannon, or Joe Horn you never really know with a lot of the players sometimes they need a new scene or a new system. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if LJ had huge success somewhere else, if Derrick Johnson left and became a pro bowler, we already know Tony G and Dwayne Bowe would start for pretty much anyone, Albert could prob get the nod as well. As far as the defense i would say Dorsey possibly but depending on the defense he would prob backup a vet, same said for either of the Brandon corners, i still think DJ would start on a lot of teams, Tamba maybe would have a starting job depending on situation everyone else id pretty much say is a no go.

I disagree with this post....Sorry Steve-O...

I would rather get it right than get it done fast...I know it can be both, but better to take your time in these things...

There isn't a single paid football commentator that thinks we are going about this in the wrong way, not in the slightest...In fact, its the opposite...All I have been reading the past few days from Florio and others is that other teams should be watching the way Clark is running this search and emulate it...Also the deliberately tight-lipped Clark is actually giving Pioli another reason he should come here...cuz we arent a cheap-suit business like the Browns apparently are...We are loyal and professional...

303, great link! I do prefer DeCosta over Pioli. DeCosta seems like the kind of guy I would want running our team. I love this quote:

"Intensity, passion for the game, the conviction to be the best they can be," DeCosta believes. "Intelligence is critical, and so is honesty. I want a guy to tell me the truth, to look me in the eye and give a sense that he'll rip someone's head off to win a game."

Rip someone's head off to win a game, perfect. We need an intensity infusion.

I've been waiting to chime in on Ferentz so this seemed like an opportune moment. I grew up in Iowa and I’m currently attending medical school in Iowa City. As a Hawkeye Fan, I’m sure I’m a little biased so keep in mind this is Ferentz through my eyes.

Actually, Ferentz did interview for the Jaguars job a couple of years before Jack got it, but he turned down the offer. As far as BSC games go, in 2003, we got beat by USC and Palmer by 21 in the orange bowl. The next 3 years we played in New Years day bowls and beat some good programs like Florida and LSU, and lost to Florida a second time thanks to the officiating crew (ask any Iowa fan and they can tell you all about it). After that we kind had a rough couple seasons, highlighted by some off the field issues at Iowa. Problem was the Ferentz was taking some chances, recruiting some kids he shouldn’t have. He seems to have wised up though. This season Iowa’s combined four losses we by a total of 12 points. With better play calling and a few bounces that go our way instead of for the opposing team, and Iowa is getting their butts kicked by USC in the Rose Bowl instead of Penn State. What do I mean, Ferentz and his offensive coordinator definitely made some questionable calls. Against Northwestern we had 1st and goal from the 5 or the 7 with plenty of time left and instead of running Shonn Greene we threw if four times unsuccessfully and lost the game. Against Michigan State we were in field goal range and a field goal would have tied it, but we went for it on 4th and 2. He called a little sweep play to Greene and he didn’t get anything running to the outside, again questionable call in my mind. Somewhere Adam is thinking about throwing himself out of a window because this sounds all too familiar… I promise he isn’t nearly as bad as Harm… errr at least I think.

Going into this season there were some writers calling for Ferentz to be fired. I guess I’ve always supported Ferentz. He isn’t an emotional guy and he is a little boring for a football coach, but the reality is he is a great fit at Iowa. In fact, it is his demeanor that fuels a lot of the speculation every year, he always gives the appropriate, politically correct answer to whomever asks… “Blah, blah, blah, I haven’t talked to anyone yet, I love it at Iowa, blah blah blah.” At ten years, he is currently one of the longest tenured coaches in college football. He still has a son who is a freshman (I think) in high school and he has previously said that he won’t think about leaving Iowa City until at least his son graduates. Currently, the Hawkeye are only loosing 16 scholarship players and most of their starters are coming back including their quarterback who really matured this year. I know this is a Chiefs blog and you could care a less about the Hawkeyes, but I tell you this because Ferentz should have a really good team next year (somehow dbk301, Ferentz actually got some 4 stars recruits this year too, sad we Iowans have to get excited about that!). I think we play at Ohio State and at Penn State, if we win those games, Iowa could be in line for the big ten title. For all the above reasons, I just don’t see Ferentz walking away from Iowa right now. As always, ESPN is always looking to stir up trouble.

Hope this sheds some light on the situation. Of course, if Ferentz takes a job tomorrow don’t hold it against me, I’m just a lowly med student trying to keep his sanity by talking about his favorite subject, the Chiefs. Let me know if you guys have any other questions.

I have to agree with you on that one 303chiefs. I enjoyed reading the article. I have to change my mind a little bit on this guy. I would like to see us put him some where on the Chiefs. I'm not totally sure how much work it takes to be a G.M? I know the number one thing is finding talent. This guy sure has found alot of it.

I would like to pick up a guy like this and see how much our roster would change. I would think immediately you would see changes. It would damn sure be better then now!!!

Please fire Gunther now!!!!!!

This article is somewhat dated (4/2007) and a little lengthy, but it offers great insight into DeCosta and if you take the time to read the whole thing, I don't see how you could be anything but ecstatic if the Chiefs end up getting him.

"Remember back in training camp, when Bob Gretz would rave about how LB Demorralizing Williams would line up as a DE and nobody on the Chiefs could stop him on his way to the QB?"

I agree that Gretz is a homer and rarely gives an unbiased view to anything related to the Chiefs - but did anyone but me notice that whenever Demorrio Williams was in the game - he made freaking plays??? Unlike any of their other LB's (except for the 1 or 2 games a year that DJ actually shows up and plays hard).

And I agree with you about Pioli not being the best fit for the Chiefs. I think he's a product of his environment, rather than the cause of his environment.

I'd hire Eric DeCosta or Jimmy Raye III over Scott Pioli any day of the week.

You have no idea if Pioli is holding up the process just to extract more money. That is just conjecture. The man was named NFL executive of the year twice. That should tell you how highly regarded he is. I believe Ferentz was the o-line coach for the Browns. He is highly regarded by the NFL as well. There have been a few times in the last few years when his name was mentioned for job openings. He declined to interview every time. So the rest of the league must think he has the ability. I know he declined an interview for the Pittsburgh job when that opened up. As for Iowa not winning a championship, it is Iowa. I've read from many Iowa fans that the guy is a great coach and gets all the talent possible out of the guys he has. The problem is that he gets 2 and 3 star athletes at Iowa as opposed to Ohio State which gets 5 star guys. At this point I'm not going to get upset about two guys that may hypothetically get hired. However, I will also wait until the new guys have been here awhile until I start saying they aren't capable of performing their job or are in it just for the money.
