This is my first mock draft of the Chiefs off-season and I hope you enjoy (or at least try not to slam me too bad). Of course, things will change once free-agents are signed and teams make organizational decisions, but for now I see the Chiefs trying to replace Jared Allen with the best Defensive End in the draft. This, of course, could all change if we land a free-agent like Suggs or Peppers. I could also see the Chiefs selecting another Offensive Tackle, one of the QBs (depending on who is available), or trading down with the 3rd overall pick.
| # | Team | Pick | |
| 1 | ![]() |
Detroit Lions (0-16) |
QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma - The Lions have to find a signal caller that doesn’t walk out of the endzone. If Bradford comes out look for the Lions to jump on him. |
| 2 | ![]() |
St. Louis Rams (2-14) |
OT Michael Oher, Ole Miss – Some people like Smith better, but the Rams need a guy that can replace Orlando Pace and I have a feeling Pace might call it |
| 3 | ![]() |
Kansas City Chiefs (2-14) |
DE Brian Orakpo, Texas – Lets face it Chiefs fans, we set the record for the least amount of sacks in a single season. Unless we sign a big name defensive end FA, I think we have to get a pass rusher. Other options: OL, QB, LB, and Crabtree. |
| 4 | ![]() |
Seattle Seahawks (4-12) |
WR Michael Crabtree, T-Tech – I know right now he is saying he is coming back, but I don’t believe it. The Seahawks can bring in the biggest playmaker in the draft. |
| 5 | ![]() |
Cleveland Browns (4-12) |
DE Michael Johnson, G-Tech – The Browns need serious help everywhere on defense and with McGinest deciding to retire they need a pass rusher.. The offense should be back after an injury ridden season. |
| 6 | ![]() |
Cincinnati Bengals (4-11-1) |
OT Andre Smith, Alabama – The Bengals get a get what most believe is the best OT in the draft, but his latest suspension could cost him a few slots. |
| 7 | ![]() |
Oakland Raiders (5-11) |
S Taylor Mays, USC – Al Davis will be in control of this pick and he loves sexy. Taylor Mays is going to be a “sexy” pick. (Did I just say that?) |
| 8 | ![]() |
Jacksonville Jaguars (5-11) |
CB Malcom Jenkins, Ohio St. – The Jags are one of the worst teams against the pass, but they also could use some help at OL and WR. |
| 9 | ![]() |
Green Bay Packers (6-10) |
DE Greg Hardy, Ole Miss – The Packers had a rough year rushing the QB, which really exposed their aging corners. |
| 10 | ![]() |
San Francisco 49ers (7-9) |
QB Matt Stafford, Georgia - The 49ers are desperate to find a QB because their crop of QBs haven’t exactly panned out. Stafford drops a little and its good news for the Niners. |
| 11 | ![]() |
Buffalo Bills (7-9) |
DE Everette Brown, FSU – The Bills could use another pass rusher, especially Aaron Schobel can’t comeback to be the same guy. |
| 12 | ![]() |
Denver Broncos (8-8) |
LB Rey Maualuga, USC – This is not good news for the Chiefs. Since the Broncos got bounced from the playoffs they get somewhat of a reward for missing out. |
| 13 | ![]() |
Washington Redskins (8-8) |
OT Eugene Monroe, V-Tech – The Redskins need to protect Jason Campbell more and Monroe will be a nice guy to add to the line. This pick will make even more sense if Jansen is let go. |
| 14 | ![]() |
New Orleans Saints (8-8) |
LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest - The Saints need help on defense and they could potentially get the best LB in the draft at 14. Curry can play either inside or outside LB. |
| 15 | ![]() |
Houston Texans (8-8) |
WR Percy Harvin, Florida – The Texans offense could use another playmaker like Harvin. Add him to Schaub, AJ, Daniels, Slaton, and Walters this could be a scary offense. |
| 16 | ![]() |
San Diego Chargers (8-8) |
LB James Laurinaitis, Ohio St. – The Chargers have been woeful against the run and the pass compared to previous seasons. Laurinaitis will help sure up a defense that struggled in ‘08. |
| 17 | ![]() |
New York Jets (9-7) |
CB Vontae Davis, Illinois – The Jets could use a little bit everywhere on defense. Davis I believe is the best player on the board so why not grab him? |
| 18 | ![]() |
Chicago Bears (9-7) |
WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri – Can you imagine having Hester and Maclin on both sides of your offense. Maclin is a better true WR, but Hester is developing his skills. (If Harvin and Maclin are available I see them taking Harvey) |
| 19 | ![]() |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) |
RB Chris Wells, Ohio St. – Gruden loves running backs and Wells is the best on the board. Cadilliac’s career could be over and Graham is coming back from injury. |
| 20 | ![]() |
Detroit Lions (9-7, Pick via Cowboys) |
OT Ciron Black, LSU – The Lions will need to keep adding to their defensive line if they pick a QB first. |
| 21 | ![]() |
Arizona Cardinals (9-7) |
C Alex Mack, Cal – The Cardinals could benefit from adding another top OL. Mack will be a great center for years to come and help the Cardinals running game. |
| 22 | ![]() |
Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) |
OT Eben Britton, Arizona - Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan could possibly be free-agents the Eagles will need an OT. I see maybe one re-signing, but not both. |
| 23 | ![]() |
Minnesota Vikings (10-6) |
CB Victor Harris, V-Tech – The Vikings need help in their secondary and Harris could be an immediate impact. |
| 24 | ![]() |
New England Patriots (11-6) |
CB Trevard Lindley, Kentucky – The Patriots missed Asante Samuel this year and they need to address their secondary problems. They could also look at William Moore. |
| 25 | ![]() |
Atlanta Falcons (11-5) |
DT Terrrance Tyler, Michigan – The Eagles are ranked last in playoff teams against the run. They have been great in December, but you can never have to many DTs. |
| 26 | ![]() |
Miami Dolphins (11-5) |
CB DJ Moore, Vanderbilt – The Dolphins secondary have struggled all season long. I think they could look for a WR or LB later in the draft, but they need to adress their secondary first. |
| 27 | ![]() |
Baltimore Ravens (11-5) |
DE George Selvie, South Florida – The Ravens might have to replace Suggs and Selvie is a guy that could potentially do that. |
| 28 | ![]() |
Indianapolis Colts 12-4) |
DT Al Woods, LSU – The Colts could use some extra beef on their DL and Woods can bring that to them. |
| 29 | ![]() |
Philadelphia Eagles (12-4; Pick via Panthers) |
WR Derrius Heyward Bey, Maryland – Jackson was a nice addition to the Eagles offense, but I don’t believe he could ever be a #1 WR. Thats why the Eagles need to bring a big target for McNabb or whoever. |
| 30 | ![]() |
Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) |
OG Duke Robinson, Oklahoma - There is a reason why Big Ben is more beat up this year than any of his previous seasons. Faneca is not there and the line has gotten worse. |
| 31 | ![]() |
New York Giants (12-4) |
DE/OLB Clint Sintim, Virgina – The Giants need help on their defensive line which has gotten very tired towards the end of the season. Plus they could move Sintim around. |
| 32 | ![]() |
Tennessee Titans (13-3) |
DT BJ Raji, Boston College – The Titans might have to consider losing Haynesworth to free agency, but even if he stays addind Raji will make this defense even better. |

Andre Smith and Eugene Monroe are rated well above Michael Oher…I think if Detroit is smart (which they might be now that Millen is gone), they will do what Miami did last year and sign Andre Smith first overall, saving them money and taking a QB in the 2nd or 3rd.
I’m on the Rey Mauluga bandwagon as of right now. I think he is someone the Chiefs can move all over the field and create matchup problems for opposing offenses. Well, as long as Gunther is let go and Herm learns how to use defensive players that is.
I’m all over Maualuga also. That can be a key to a NEW defense. I like Orakpo, too. I can’t even believe that someone would suggest a WR for us. That has luxury pick written all over it! We need key players.
I think the Chiefs are in one hell of a bind here. They have to be active in FA for a DE. Orakpo and Johnson are good DE’s, but not 3rd pick material. I don’t totally buy into the “Best Player Available” philosophy later in the draft, but you’re gonna pay the number 3 pick a butt ton of money for a lot of years. He better be worth it. Injury concerns are also an issue.
A lot of this is going to come down to the coach/gm. If Herm is around, they probably stick with Thigpen. New GM/new coach, who the hell knows.
Fantasy offseason/draft:
-Sign Suggs to FA deal
-Sign Matt Cassel
-Sign Jordan Gross or another stud RT
-Trade Larry for a 2nd or 3rd round pick
-Fire everyone on the coaching staff and hire a staff with their heads at least 2 feet from ass
-Trade back to the 6-9 range and snag Maualuga
More likely scenario with how my beloved Chiefs have been looking for the last few years:
-Sign Pacman Jones to a 5 year deal
-Sign Vonnie Holiday
-Give LJ a contract extension
-Keep Herm, but bring back Greg Williams
-Re-Hire King Carl
-Trade up to take Ryan Leaf
Happy New Years guys
Mushin9…
That is some funny stuff…
Of course I imagine a lot of mocks are going to change after we find out for sure what underclassmen are staying and which are making the jump to the NFL. Just a guessing game now.
Nice work Mushin, but if we look at Ryan Leaf we have to consider Tim Couch, Akali Smith, and a few others
Again guys thank for the support and I will always listen to suggestions.
These are the 5 most used thoughts to drafting(in order):
#1 – If a Franchise Quarterback is there, you take him. (I am eating my words everyday about Matt Ryan & Joe Flacco last year)
#2 – Identify your weakest spot and fix it. (I don’t care what anyone says – it is the Defense….Middle Linebacker position! period!)
#3 – Take the best player available. (I believe it to be Crabtree…there is a debate with QB Statford/Bradford there is a debate with OT Oher/Smith/Monroe there is a debate with LB Maualuga/Curry and there is a debate with DE Johnson/Orakpo….but there is no debate on WR -Crabtree.
#4 – Fix the lines (offensive and defensive tackles) my problem here is three fold….first we took Albert last year in the first, second I believe we can find a Tackle like Gross in Free Agency, and last…we would be taking the 2nd best at a position with the third pick…now that would be a waste.
#5 – If a dominant pass rusher is there you find a spot for him on your team! (this is where your mock draft comes in Adam…I don’t want either Johnson or Orakpo….give me Suggs instead)
I won’t make the mistake again….I don’t care if it is Bradford or Statford…I want a Franchise QB an “Ace in the Hole” because Thgpen is not it!
and if – and only if we take someone else…..it better be MAUALUGA!!!!!!
Zach:
Not a bad pick for the Chiefs. Given that you have Stafford and Crabtree sitting there, we could be in ideal position to trade down a few spots. I don’t think it’s fair to work trades into a mock. This could be a good situation during the real draft.
“I won’t make the mistake again….I don’t care if it is Bradford or Statford…I want a Franchise QB an “Ace in the Hole” because Thgpen is not it!”
And how exactly do we know that by picking one of these guys, we are getting an Ace? IMO we don’t. Could they turn out like Flacco and Ryan? Possibly. Could they turn out like the countless others who have been drafted as “Franchise Quarterback’s”, only to fall by the wayside as complete flops? Of course. So to me, why take that chance on a draft pick that comes with such a high price tag. Drafting positions of need that have a higher success rate is my call.
I totally agree BTF. I don’t have the same feeling I had about Flacco and Adam doesn’t have the same feeling he had about Ryan with these two QBs. Could we be wrong, sure, but I am just not that excited about Bradford or Stafford.
BucktheFroncos – absolutly both Statford and Bradford could be busts, anyone can!
My point to the Ace in the hole comment is that I don’t believe in Thigpen and having a drafted 1st round “potential” franchise quarterback waiting seems like the best option. But that only works if you think they have “it”
Zach – I was the Driver of the Brohm Bus last year while throwing “Opie” (Matty Ice) under neath it so take my evaluations of a QB with a grain of salt. The GM’s thought different than me last year (go figure)
Where Bradford becomes really interesting is if this team decides to stick with the spread, provided the coaching staff could spend the offsense designing at least one good play to get from the 3 yard line to the endzone.
If the Chiefs run the spread next year then Bradford turns from interesting prospect to mega-stud. He knows the offense in and out and could step in on day one. If KC reverts back to a traditional NFL offense, then we are, most likely, looking at a year of Thigpen.
How bout this for a strange scenario:
1)KC Drafts Bradford to run the spread, but decide to sit him for a year.
2)Thiggy gets the nod but gets hurt.
3)Croyle comes in, and due the miracles of bionic surgery, stays healthy for a year and plays lights out.
If we’re going to have QB controversy, let’s not do it half-assed. Going into the offseason with a 7th round pick who has shown promise, 3rd round pick rising from the ashes like a broke ass phoenix, and the 3 rd round pick overall ready for his chance would at the very least make for a lively forum.
Rookie Franchise QB’s who do well usually have a lot of talent around them. I don’t think that is the case for our Chiefs. Any QB who is brought in, has to become familiar with a clipboard for at least half the season just based on our current roster. Flacco and Ryan both had strong lines and running backs to carry some of his load. Our starting RB doesn’t want to be here next year and has had problems with attitude for years
I think we need to start in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Defense wins championships and our O-line isn’t there yet.
Zach, considering we pick so early in the secnod round, you couldn’t have thrown the next few picks on there? I would’ve loved to see Cushing as our second, and I am praying that either Alex Mack (he’s projected as 2nd-early 3rd, but you have him going 21st) or Max Unger from Oregon (who is rated higher than Mack and projected as high as the 1st-2nd) will fall to us and replace Rudy.
I think if we did draft Bradford, Croyle would be toast.
I also don’t see the spread working that well in the NFL. Thats why Thiggy had a QB rating of 100 in 1st qtr and 50 by the 4th qtr. Maybe it well but I think defenses are too quick to get beat by the college type spread.
If Bradford is gone, I think you have to go with Crabtree. At least a couple of OTs are worth top 5 picks but I say would be better off addressing needs on the C/ROL through free agency or 2nd/3rd picks. No reason to be paying out top 5 LT money when we already have that spot paid for and taken care of in Albert. I like Johnson over Orakpo at RDE but I feel both are reaches at #3. Beyond that, I’d go with CB Jenkins as worthy of a top 5 selection. I say we still need to find a quality replacement for Surtain and Jenkins fits the mold better than anyone.
I haven’t seen Aaron Curry play but a lot of people seem to be pretty high on him. Sounds like the archetype LB we need. If he’s everything people are claiming, he’d be an archetype LB the Chiefs should be looking for and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him ascend even higher by the time April rolls around.
Our offensive schemes right now seem like they wont work for long.
First and foremost we need to sign Suggs and Gross. We have the money and the needs. I don’t think Cassel is worth the money he will be asking. I like Thiggy Smalls better and with Quinn Grey as back up.
So with our first pick I say if we can trade down, do it. I would like to see us get MAUALUGA!! With the 3rd pick only Crabtree is worth that spot.
Please trade LJ and get more draft picks!!!!
I am scared that Gross and Suggs could easily resign with their current teams. We need to have several options and be serious about our offers unlike the King Carl era.
We need to trade down. I think it looks good, some teams (49ers, Texans, Da-Bears) will want to vault over Seattle to get Crabtree or he will be gone. We can then shore up with DE, LB, OL, LB, LB, LB, DB…..
It is well known and very evident that good pass rushers are more widely available than face crushing run stuffers. Draft wise, good pass rushers can be had as late as the 5th rnd, while run stuffers go quick, first two rnds at best. UFA wise, teams are much more inclined to hold on to run stuffers than pass rushers, its just the way it is. Mauluga is a beast, has been for 3 yrs, watch him and take him 1st. Get the pass rusher in second round. A STARTING run stuffing beast will not be available in the 2nd. Bank on it!
I am just glad you didnt put us taking Crabtree….we will trade down…I hope…
I think that 3 is too high for Orakpo. I’d like to see the Chiefs draft Stafford. This organization needs a franchise qb. Thigpen was a nice story, but the guy can only play in the spread, underthrows the deep ball, locks in on his receivers, and is not very accurate (He should be able to have a minimum 60% completion percentage in the spread offense).
The most ideal scenario would be to scare Seattle into trading up so we can get more draft picks. That is if Crabtree is that important to them.
If we don’t trade, I think Crabtree is the only player worth the 3rd pick.
