Chiefs To Pick Third

Posted by: Zach

The Chiefs will pick third overall with both the Rams and Chiefs losing. A few games today caused the Chiefs to actually have the weaker strength of schedule. Thanks to Chris over at Arrowhead Pride for digging this information out for everyone.

This will be the first time in Chiefs history to draft third overall in the draft. If the Chiefs would’ve drafted second overall then it would have been the fourth time they drafted second overall. They took Neil Smith, Mike Bell, and Art Still. I think this is actaully good news for the Chiefs because this draft is so deep and there are no clear cut superstars at the top of the draft. The Chiefs will actually have the second pick in the second, fourth and sixth rounds as well. So let’s start asking the question…

Who do you want the Chiefs to draft with the third pick overall?

(Stay tuned for my first mock draft and Adam’s Draft Apples.)

KC was very bad on defense this year, but I think the level of talent in the secondary is OK. The D-line needs help, but the place they were truly terrible was at linebacker. So I’d consider where they rate the LB’s and strongly look at Curry in Round One. (I think the available DE’s are too much of a reach for the third pick and the associated long-term contract.) On the offensive side, I don’t think Thigpen is the long-term answer and the Pistol scheme is too limited at present, but I don’t think any of the senior QB’s, or eligible undergrad QBs rate near this high– draft a QB later and see if they develop. Talent-wise and long-term, I’d be happy the Alabama LT Smith: KC still has big-time offensive line needs.

  2. 2. pc9165 Says:

I think we need linebacker or d-line help the most. Who that could be, I don’t know but until they have a rookie cap they’re all gambles with QB being the most expensive gamble.

  3. 3. Maine_Chief Says:

Stars seem to be aligning for Curry unless we trade down – which would be the smart move.

  4. 4. bannyc9 Says:

To take a LB with the 3rd overall would be quite a reach. Usually, LB’s are not taken that high. That being said, we might be in a great situation. Depending on who declares, Bradford, Stafford, and Alabama’s Smith seem to be the top 3 guys. We could take any of them and actually, I would be happy. But we are also in prime trading position. Maybe trade down in the 8,9,10 area and take Rey Maluluga (sp -1) from USC. He is the next Junior Seau.

  5. 5. Rihavens Says:

If we pick for board, we will most likely be getting Michael Crabtree. If we pick por position we can consider Rey Maualuga (ILB), Brian Orakpo (DE), George Selvie (DE).

Honestly, as Chiefs fans I think we should be following A.) The GM hunt. B.) The Coach hunt C.) The free agancy.

We have a lot of changes and a LONG way to go before the draft.

  6. 6. Zach Says:

Banny I completely agree with you… LB is too high. The only thing I don’t like is Stafford. What about Oher too?

  7. 7. Randy Says:

I have no flippin clue who we should draft first, or who the new GM should be or what the new GM will do about a coach but I cant wait to see the mock drafts and read the postings and watch what happens and labor over where my 2009 seats should be, there aint no off season for me much to the annoyance of my family, friends, and co-workers.

  8. 8. MasterBlaster Says:

Ok…with the third pick we should…

Draft Bradford if he declares….if not…

Use Crabtree as trade down bait and nab Maluluga

get a second for that trade down

then get Alex Mack and Cushing in the second

  9. 9. Jacket74 Says:

I agree re history of LB’s not in top five, but trading down from three will be extremely difficult unless Bradford and Stafford both come out, and someone else wants one of them REALLY bad; if Smith falls to three, I think there are too many other good tackle prospects that anyone needing a LT would trade down that far. And I don’t see anyone trading down to get Crabtree at three.

As for KC and the QBs, I think putting a #3 rookie QB into the Chief’s current starting lineup would be a disaster– any passing-game progress made by the offense under Thigpen would be lost, there would likely be lots of sacks, etc.– it would be a re-run of 2008. Smith’s the only one who that high who would contribute immediately on offense. If Gonzalez stays I think the Chiefs can put together an OK passing attack even with Thigpen; right now what they need more on offense is a better right side for the O-line and improved running game.

Re LB’s, I think better linebacker talent improves the defense the most. Last year’s first LB went in top 10, as I recall. I think Curry’s a lesser reach than any of the DE’s: the quick rush LB provides better prospects for an immediate impact on pass rush, compared to the current crop of DE’s, including Orakpo.

  10. 10. Randy Says:

how soon I wonder will we know about a new GM and his decision on a coach.

  11. 11. pc9165 Says:

I hope we can trade down and get Rey Maualuga also. I know it was in ‘89 but the late great DT was a number 4 pick as a linebacker.

Does anybody have any idea what round Pat White might go in. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Chiefs uniform next year(only QB to ever win 4 bowl games), him and maybe Mat Cassel or some other FA.

  12. 12. bannyc9 Says:

I could see Pat White being a 5th or 6th round guy. I agree he would be a decent flyer in the later rounds.

My ultimate 3 round mock would be
    1 Maluluga ILB USC
    2 Cushing OLB USC
    3 Unger – C from Oregon

Instantly solve the LB problems and get help on the OL. I think it has been told numerous times before on the site that Niswanger would be a better G anyways. And hopefully find a starting RT and DE in free agency.

  13. 13. bannyc9 Says:

Another think to ask is what can we get for Larry Johnson? After his comments today, I do not believe we can keep him. Is there a team willing to give up a pick to take his contract?

  14. 14. Zach Says:

I dont think Pat White will be a QB. He will be a slot WR/wildcat guy. Reminds me of Randle El.

I don’t think we could get much for Larry. I think other teams might see him as damages goods with a large contract.

  15. 15. TeamPriest31 Says:

I have no Idea who we should pick. I think alot of it will be affected by free agency. I’d like to see us get some extra draft picks for LJ. What a joke of a person with so much talent!!!

I would have to say Defense should be number one goal. Please get rid of Gunther also!!!!

  16. 16. woody Says:

I agree…After today I have no clear evaluation of the team…Its way too early to think who we will take, with free agency and everything to come…

Gunther should be fired and probly will be…

If Herm stays look for D-Backs coach Gibbs to be promoted…VERY smart guy…I am surprised he is not a DC somewhere already…

  17. 17. robanson Says:

How about we go to what almost worked in the 90’s? Draft defensive studs like DT and Neil Smith and hope like hell we can find a good QB in the later rounds(yes I know we never found 1) or free agency. Although I might be screaming Stafford on draft day if he is sitting there. Yesterday was the first day I quit on the Chiefs at halftime, but hell they quit on us too, and there was just too much cold beer and too many good games to watch with friends I haven’t seen in awhile at the local sports bar. I usually take in the whole game at home so I can hear it and take in the game up close. Yesterday made me sick to my stomach while I was rooting for the Rams to lose so we could move up to 2nd.

  18. 18. Dave(Playaction31) Says:

Bannyc9 I like what you are thinking but here is a different spin

1st A. Curry OLB Wake Forest (better than Cushing)
2nd B. Spikes MLB Florida (Just as good as laurinaitis and Maualuga and currently projected in the 2nd round)
    3rd Unger C Oregon

Somehow find a way to sign Jordon Gross from Carolina

As for DE your guess is as good as mine

  19. 19. Dave(Playaction31) Says:

The other thing to keep in mind is K.Dansby(OLB) and M.Peterson (MLB) with free agency

  20. 20. mushin9 Says:

    2009 Top Ten draft order:

    1) Detroit (need QB)
    2) St Louis (need QB…maybe)
    3) Kansas City (Need QB…maybe)
    4) Cincy (All rests on Palmer’s elbow)
    5) Seattle (Needs QB)
    6) Oakland (Needs QB, but doesn’t think so)
    7) Cleveland 8) San Fran (Needs QB)
    9) Jacksonville
    10) Green Bay

-Even if Bradford and Stafford come out, there’s no guarantee that either will last past Detroit and St. Louis. You would think that St. Louis would target Smith, but you never know how a new coach is going to view Bulger.

-If Bradford/Stafford are still on the board at 3, the Chief’s best hope for a trade is Seattle. Cincy is going to have to decide if Palmer’s elbow is holding together, and Seattle really needs a QB. The Matt “Back Spasm” Hasselbeck era is most likely over. If Cincinatti keeps everyone guessing about Palmer’s status, then Seattle might be forced to pull the trigger. That would suit me just fine. I would much rather see the Chiefs drafting at 5 in LB country.

-Seattle looks good for a trade for Crabtree also. I think Old Chief got an invite to go and play the slot from them this year. If Cincy lets Whosyourdaddy get away in FA, then Seattle will need to leap frog Cincy again. Come on Hawks!!!

-Other trade scenarios that would favor the Chiefs:

1)Al Davis decides that Crabtree will fix the O-line
    2)Singletary wants to moon Crabtree and/or Stafford/Bradford
3)Jax decides that the Matt Jones cocaine supplement training program should be replaced by Crabtree.

As much attention as the young QB’s are going to get, it may be the Texas Tech WR that gives the Chiefs the most leverage. Only Seattle and San Fran really need QB’s, while Cincy, Seattle, Oakland, San Fran and Jacksonville are all dying for a go to WR. If Bradford doesn’t come out because he lost the title game, then Crabtree’s stock will flippin soar.

    LET’s GO GATORS!!!!

  21. 21. Dave(Playaction31) Says:

    Channing Crowder (OLB) ?

  22. 22. robanson Says:

I like the “if Bradford and Stafford are gone, use the next best players as trade bait scenario”. I also don’t think we could go wrong with getting the best O lineman either if we could trade down and still get one. How about this for our Management mess? The “reality team” Dick Vermeil GM, Mangini HC, Herm DC. Unless of course the “dream team” is avaialble, Pioli GM and Cowher HC.

  23. 23. km230015 Says:

I don’t think trading down is going to happen unless someone is crazy. Nobody wants to give up to much because the salaries are so high. If memory serves correct i think the position with the least amount of busts have been OT depending on the caoch and what kind of offense they want running with game Andre Smith (he mauls people) or pass protection Oher. Bradford is only an option if he sits for a year while they straighten out the O-line or he ends up being the next Joey Harrington or David Carr.

  24. 24. pantherhare Says:

I’m a firm believer that football teams should be built from the foundations: the O-line and D-line. You put mediocre QB’s behind a great O-ine and suddenly they’re great QB’s. And for all the talk about LBs, they’re not going to be much good if they have to constantly take on 300lbs behemoths because the D-line is weak.

On that note, I think the Chiefs should draft O-line and go for D-line in FA. Get Andre Smith if he’s available. Go for centers like Mack or Unger in the second.

In FA, go all out for Peppers or Suggs (I prefer Peppers, but would be happy with either). The Chiefs have plenty of cap space and there are some good, relatively young, defensive FAs available, so they should take advantage.

  25. 25. larry1c Says:

I have to agree with the statements about the GM and Head Coach being the priority. We avoided FA last year and can’t afford to do it this year. Right now Cleveland is getting a lot of press about Cowher.

Some of these head coaches being fired are proven offensive and defensive coordinators. We need to make the move on the GM now before all the available coaches get sucked up. I hope Clark is knocking on doors.

  26. 26. BucktheFroncos Says:

Screw Knocking on Doors. I want Clark signing checks!

As far as drafts go my heart says O-line but my head says Defense. How can you not address the most glaring problem first in a draft. Our defense could improve 10 spots next season in the overall rankings and still be not be in the top half of the league. Yesterday should have been a wake up call to anyone who thinks we should look elsewhere with our first pick. CEDRIC F’n BENSON people!!! Running behind a patchwork o-line with Chris Henry as the #1 WR. And the Bengals kicked our ass up and down the field.

Who should we draft first? I have no clue. But he better play on the defensive side of the is all I’m saying.

  27. 27. blkmercman Says:

Did we not draft DT number 3 way back when? Aikman, Sanders, DT?

  28. 28. Zach Says:

    No he was picked 4th:

    1 Troy Aikman Cowboys
2 Tony Mandarich Green Bay Packers
    3 Barry Sanders Detroit Lions
4 Derrick Thomas Kansas City Chiefs

  29. 29. blkmercman Says:

Roger that, thanks for the clarification. And a big thanks to Green Bay!!:)
