Merlin's Magic The King is Dead Edition

AUTHOR: merlin | IN: Merlin's Magic | COMMENTS: 12 Comments |

We played last Sunday. Doesn’t that seem like ages ago? Well Addicts the King is dead and I am still in a state of shock. We all knew this was coming in the next year plus, but the timing is shocking. Carl had a good run in the 90’s. We should celebrate his accomplishments and move on. So, what does this mean? Well, it means that Clark Hunt has stepped up and made a call. This is the start of Clark getting out of his father’s long shadow. This also means the fate of the entire coaching staff as well as the direction of the Chiefs are all up in the air.

Where do we go from here? Well, Clark’s press conference has been covered, but there is still an outstanding question in my mind. Here is the relevant question and answer:

Q: Is it someone who you will look for who will have ties to this organization?

HUNT: “No, not at all. I expect that the successful candidate will come from outside of the organization. I think it’s important that we get a fresh set of eyes on the football team and the coaching staff. So, I’ll really be focusing my search on people who don’t have ties with the Chiefs. I do not anticipate that anybody from the team will be a candidate for the position.”

Examine that answer closely. Think about that phrase ‘people who don’t have ties with the Chiefs’. What does that mean? Does it mean current Chief employees or anyone who has worked for the Chiefs in the past? It could mean either one and that follow-up question was not asked. If it’s the latter meaning, say goodbye to Marty, Terry Bradway, Cowher as GM, etc. I do like the tone that Clark is setting. He wants someone skilled in player evaluation and someone who will build for the long-term. However, I disagree with Clark being involved in the head coaching decision. Clark, hire a GM and turn over the keys to the Chiefmobile. In my opinion, the GM makes the decision about the coaches and scouts. If Clark wants a good young GM prospect, he needs to give that GM the authority to hire/fire the coach. There are several good choices out there and Scott Pioli is the obvious hot GM prospect. BigBlueShoe contributed an excellent article over on Arrowhead Pride. It’s an excellent read. I recommend it highly.

Draft position watch. Well, the Bengals upset the fading Redskins. Currently, we are tied with the Rams for positions #2/3. We can do no worse than pick #7. Rams against San Francisco and Bengals versus Browns are our key draft position games this week. I am not buying Miami as a good team. It will be interesting to see how the team responds to the obvious job jeopardy that Herm and the whole staff is in.

Wow that is a interesting question, how will the team respond? They play great and they want Herm to stay aboard I guess, they drag ass and they want new leadership all around.

  2. MasterBlaster says:

As much anti-herm sentament there is going around its hard to take this position. But, We need to give herm & co. one more year; if for nothing other than geting one more herm & co. draft. Also, its a really bad idea to change the coaching staff right in the middle of a total rebuild. I think if a new GM (Pioli fingers crossed)comes in he should be told this.

“After the 2009 season you will have total control to pick whoever you like. Under extreme circumstances (another super chity year) or opportunity (some great coach becomes available and time is pressing) you will be allowed to change the staff mid-2009 season”

I understand where you are coming from. However, I do think if you hire a GM, you don’t tell him who the coach is. The new GM should make that call. If he wants Herm, that’s his call. If he wants someone else, then we have a new coach. The same applies to coaches. You don’t hire one and tell him who is staff is. That should be the coaches call. I would take this position regardless of the people involved and my feelings for them.

  4. Randy says:

I think in two or three more years we are gonna go to the Superbowl.

  5. Randy says:

And win and Im gonna be really proud.

  6. MasterBlaster says:

Yah Merlin. I think a clean sweep might be a foregone conclusion. But, if I just sung the praises of a tanked season….all season. And, our new coach botches the 09′ draft. And, by 09′ draft meaning my sun, my moon, my star lit sky. Well, Do you undertand the term “homicidal rage”?

  7. Randy says:

At the draft party, Clark showed up and a photo of Carl flashed on the huge tv screen and beer was flowing and everyone boo’d and I was one of the loudest and Clarks face registered shock and I wish I didnt do it Im sorry Carl.

  8. goshootergo says:

Personally, i’m excited about the change up coming! Carl had mad us somewhat competative, but never champions. I like the thought of hiring the guy vp from Pittsburg. One thing about pittsburg, is win or lose against them, you leave battered and bruised! Thats the type of football we need in KC! Im tired of being a diehard fan of soft nfl team! I fan i shall always remain!

  9. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

I have never been a Carl Peterson basher, but I think the hiring of Herm Edwards as head coach alone warrants the dismissal (i.e. resignation) of Carl Peterson.

  10. larry1c says:

I believe players will respond to their job jeopardy just knowing their performance will be reviewed on tape.

As for the comments about Herm’s future. Whomever the GM becomes, a system will come as well. That system will dictate Herm’s future. If I am the GM, I bring in my own staff who I know and everyone understands that system. From the ground up and that includes Herm.

Also, watch for reaction from Tony G after the GM is selected. Another year, another system OR retire. He is too professional to say something to the media, but watch for actions.

  11. Merlin says:

    larry:

Tony G has already campaigned in the media for Thigpen to be the QB next year and asked to get traded in mid-season. So, I don’t see where the ‘he is too professional to say something to the media’ comment comes from.
