AADQ: Cowher Vs. Pioli

by AADQ

Everyone from the Addicts to the Boys in Bristol to Jason Whitlock to me feels the same way. The Chiefs have two homerun options: Bill Cowher and Scott Pioli. You guys know which way I’m leaning, and I’ll chime in a little more on Cowher later on in the week.

Addicts, do you want Belichick’s Right hand or the Chin?

I hear you Randy. Still had an awesome time just being there at Arrowhead and watching my Chiefs play

Vermeil would be a horrible mistake. And if you think Schottenheimer is not being seriously considered I think you are mistaken. But I could be wrong, I thought I was once but I found out I was really right. I have a gut feeling Clark will make an intelligent decision. And whoever said it is time for us to have a GREAT coach I say AAAA-MEN!

Adam and others,

How would you feel about Pioli (or anybody else you happen to favor as GM) if he was hired and then turned around and said he has evaluated the situation here and absolutely loves what and how Herm is doing and that he intends to keep him on as HC for the foreseeable future? If nothing else, I'd say that would make for some pretty interesting conversation around these parts.

BTW I think the Marty sighting is all about Clark getting some counseling and testing the waters of "next steps." If that turns out to be the case, more power to Clark. At least he's taking a look at the landscape of whats out there. lets face it, this won't get too serious until the season is over

I think some consideration needs to be given to the style of football we want in KC and let that dictate who is brought in. Vermiel was offensive minded but through the air, Cowher and Marty for that matter, were all about smash mouth defensive and run it down your through offense. In my mind those early days of Marty did bring that to the game every day, but his decision making in playoff games has cost him dearly. His age is also an issue. Cowher in spite of his 15 years coached to the philosophy added with mental toughness. Any GM aligned to that sytle and can work to get what Cower needs has my vote. Herm just hasn't been able to close the deal and they had opportunities.

How disgusting of a sight it was to turn on the game last sunday and see the vast # of empty seats at Arrowhead. It looked like a Pop Warner championship was about to be played at an NFL venue. Chiefs fans are obviously the most devoted in sports and the lack of attendance is an obvious protest that I support wholeheartedly. This fanbase cannot be lost. With the winds of change blowing through the midwest and another exciting draft approaching in the spring, I think the next year or two will be a delight for all that bleed red and mustard yellow.

Forgive my cynicism, but the real reason that Carl was let go has less to do with the Chiefs record and more to do with making a move that will, Clark hopes, get fans back into the stands. Nobody within the organization can honestly say they are surprised or dissappointed with how this season has turned out. The fans however are unhappy and staying home; Carl was the most logical victim of their appeasement. Carl knows that, Clark knows that, Herm knows that, no hard feelings.

"Fresh set of eyes" means no old guys, forgive the rhyming. That excludes Marty and Vermeil. They are not fresh and, as you guys mentioned, biased as well. We don't want more of the same, we want CHANGE! This is exactly why Clark pulled the trigger on the Carl forced resignation before the season is over. He is going to interview very carefully and thoroughly. It will not be a knee jerk decision. I am excited for the future and the prospects of having new people in charge! I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.

With all that said, Pioli could pull a Phil Savage and go to a struggling franchise to demonstrate how "shrewd" he is at evaluating talent. Or he may continue to decline offers for a promotion and stay under the Patriots umbrella.

YA - you'll get no disagreement from me there. Cliche or not, a good defense is indespensible late in the season and on into the post-season. But a good defense becomes an afterthought if you don't have the right guy under center. Despite the fact that Marty's teams had perennially terrific defenses he always came up short in the post-season because (I would say) he put the wrong guy under center. Grbac over Gannon was 100% Marty's call.

I think if we're talking Pittsburgh's success there is now way you can't contribute alot of that to their D.

Woody makes a great point about the fact that Pittsburgh continues to play at a high level even without Cowher. I attribute that primarily to one factor - a franchise QB. Successful teams always seem to have them and I think too often coaches get way too much credit for a team's success when in fact it's actually the result of who's taking the snaps. Was it Reeves/Shanny or was it Elway? Was it Aikman or was it Switzer? Was it Favre or was it Holmgren? Was it Warner or was it Vermeil? Was it Dawson or was it Stram? Is it Brady or is it Bellichek? In more cases than not, I'm inclined to believe it's the former, not the latter.

I'd take Pioli hands down. Cowher is a coach, and a darn good one. He should stay a coach. Coach/GM roles have proven not to work in the NFL.

Jimmy Johnson would be a great candidate, but he has said in the past he has no desire to come back and loves what he is doing now. Too bad, he was the greatest evaluator of talent I have seen.

Marty is not going to be the GM. Clark wants someone "outside" the orginization and I don't think he meant those that are currently on the payroll. I think he meant anybody from the past that had anything to do with the Chiefs. I don't thik Marty, Cowher, Bradway or Vermeil will be back just for that reason.

I just saw the Vermeil got posted here and wanted to say:

He is the reason we have no talent on this team! What draft didn't he screw up?

Id rather have a gut full of pinworms than a Vermeal Edwards administration

Yes, wait til my holdout is over and then the games will be fun again! lol...

I do have quite a remarkable scream I do...they can hear it on the field if I do it at the right time...I have proof in the form of turned heads haha...

YO X you need to see a game next year Sunday was not a good represntation of ARROWHEAD

Is Whitlock the columnist that shall not be named on ESPN? I got a kick out of this, looking at Bill Williamson's AFC West blog, he has this lead in to an article,

One local columnist believes Scott Pioli and Bill Cowher are on the Chiefs' radar.

So I click the article, and it's one by Whitlock, why couldn't the guy say Whitlock's name, he is fairly well known nationally, he's not just "one local columnist." Is ESPN that butt hurt about him still? I just found that amusing.

Oh yes...lol...

Yea, it is more likely that it is neither of those men, I was just making to case that if I had to pick I would say Pioli is safer...

Another reason he is more likely is that we are looking for a GM currently, not a head coach (yet)...Cowher wants control of his own guys, that makes his situation much more complicated...For instance what does Clark do? Talk to Cowher about who he would have come in here as GM then pick that guy and fire Herm when he brings them both in? Its just...not as likely...

Pioli '09

C. Both

Pioli can shore up things in the front office.

The Chin can light a fire under our developing rookies

Pioli/Cowher '09: Change we can believe in

I'm just glad Hermerrhoid isn't in charge of rebuilding the front office. He'd try to use someone's practice squad-er that was a UDFA to run the team ...

going to be alot of competition for all the open Chiefs positions lots of teams cleaning house.

Also, I don't think Pioli is leaving New England. He's turned down a number of franchises.

It's not going to be any of these people. No Marty, no Bill, no Dick.

Clark wants a fresh face, and fresh ideas. I, for one, will support whomever he brings in... as long as they send Herm and CO. packing as the first order of business.

What about Sports Doc, Adam, and Zach and the Helm with Randy5k as entertainment coordinator.

I think this Vermeal thing is a real risk, Vermeal is the one who is responsible in many ways for the arrival of Edwards in my opinion, given their history and the history of both Vermeal and Peterson with the Eagles and Herm. Sumbitch I hope we dont wind up with the Dick and Herm show.

Vermiel, puleeez. No thanks.

Everyone needs to relax and not fall in love with just two guys.

Keep an open mind, we might hire someone that makes us all go: WHO?

However, Change after 20 years is good. I am looking forward to welcoming anyone outside the current organization.

I am kind of questioning whether or not Cowher should be as hyped as he is...I realize that he went in to Pittsburgh and turned losers into perennial winners BUT since he has left, what has happened? They have kept winning...Is it that someone else in the organization or the organization itself is so solid that it made Cowher look better than he is? Or has he just helped to build it up so well that they remain strong to this day?

I think it is the opposite with Pioli. Belichick without Pioli bombed out in Cleveland (you could argue he didn't have much of a chance really) And every coach that has left there has had no success in the NFL. What is missing? The personnel guy. This is supported by the fact that his personnel disciple in Dimitroff has already turned a franchise around.

I think Pioli is the safer bet...by far...It is just a matter of luring him away...

Vermeil. No Thx.

Martie. Not so much, but eh...i could live with him in a management position. But for me I vote the Chin. As hammer so eloquently put it, "Plus he has the jaw and the wrinkled brow for head coach work!"

Mike Florio of PROFOOTBALLTALK.com

There’s a strong rumor making the rounds in league circles that former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil could return as team president following the departure of long-time G.M., president, and COEO Carl Peterson.

It was Peterson who lured Vermeil out of retirement to coach the Chiefs in 2001, only one season after Vermeil went bawling into the sunset after taking the Rams to a Super Bowl title.

Though it’s possible that Vermeil will serve as G.M. as well, we’re guessing that the Chiefs will be setting up a Parcells-style structure in Kansas City, with a G.M. and a head coach reporting directly to Vermeil.

If Vermeil gets the top job, the chances of Herm Edwards sticking around increases significantly, since Edwards played for Vermeil in Philadelphia

We can't go wrong with either decision.

My choice: Marty Schottenheimer as GM and Cower as Coach.

Marty Hates the Raiders, and now he despises the Chargers.... I would love someone who has a personal vendetta as our GM!!!!!!!! Make it freaking personal man!

Yeah you heard me right, Marty as GM!!!!!!!

However, Hunts comments suggest Marty is not a possibility.

I would even take Floyd Reese: a super bowl appearance, and four playoff appearances as well in like 14 years, I think?

Go CHiefs!!!!

Oh thats right D , Marty was having an affair or something in KC.

Clark said it will need to be somebody with high moral character and somebody with a proven track of evaluating and developing talent - including a QB. I don't see Marty fitting any of those bills. I'd bet almost anything that this "Marty sighting" is a smokescreen that's designed to make Cleveland pull the trigger a little quicker. Plus, I think there was a period there towards the end where Marty was given GM-like authority on personnel and that little experiment ended up being a complete flop.

Of the two (Cowher vs Pioli), I'd think Pioli would be the more desirable option. I don't see Cowher as being somebody that wants or needs a GM job to prove something. I think Cowher is a great coach but I think it is also foolish to lose sight of the fact that it took him 14 years to finally win a Superbowl.

Because Pioli has lived in Bellichek's shadow, I think just the opposite would be true for him.

Give me somebody with a little fire in their belly.

Last but not least, be careful what you wish for.

Pioli and Cowher is the combo Id sign off on.

Bill Cowher as head coach makes a lot of sense. He has ties to the Chiefs organization, he has worked with Chan Gailey in Pittsburgh, and he is also friends with Scott Pioli. Plus he has the jaw and the wrinkled brow for head coach work! Pioli and Cowher, I approve.

voters approve new facility in St Joe for training camp in 2010. Marty isnt in KC for the burnt ends...

Give me the Chin as a coach and Marty as the GM and I would be perfectly happy

Breaking news from the heartland Chiefs new training camp plans are in St Joe and Marty sightings in KC.
