King Carl Resignation Open Thread

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: 35 Comments

(Thanks to Chris for reporting this! I wanted to chime in and get an official thread going…)

It looks like Clark Hunt has finally ditched the glasses and put on the cape! Will he end up being super as an owner? I’m not sure, but at least now we know that he wants to win. Apparently, he is looking to do exactly what I recommended him to do less than 24 hours ago — clean house. Any new GM is going to want to bring in their own coach (or perhaps also be the coach). Herm Edwards is toast!!! I’m honestly more happy about that then Carl Peterson’s resignation. At least King Carl accomplished some things while he was with the Chiefs.

We thank Carl Peterson for everything he did for the Chiefs franchise. Soon, hopefully, we will thank Harm for the upcoming top draft pick and a slew of dumbass quotes to laugh at. What a day!

Addicts, feel free to let loose about today’s big news. Christmas hit 10 days early, baby!

  1. Randy says:

    From Wikipedia:

The Kansas City Chiefs were the winningest team in the NFL for the decade of the 1990s by percentage, qualified the playoffs in six of seven seasons from 1990 to 1997, and reached the AFC Championship game following the 1993 season.

That being said every single team in our Division went to the Superbowl including the Seahawks when they were in the division except us. So thank you Carl sincerely for making Arrowhead what it is, but time to go.

  2. thebryman says:

This is a weird feeling, I’ve never been a fan of the Chiefs without Carl Peterson, and for the first time in over 10 years, I feel like the team could potentially win a Super Bowl, since it wasn’t ever going to happen with King Carl. But I do have to give him some praise though, he did give us some damn good teams in the 90’s, and that started my love affair with the sport and with the Chiefs. Even though we didn’t win the big one, I will look fondly on the Vermeil era as well, because there were some seriously fun games in that period. With that said, this was way overdue, 20 years without a title, or even making it to the title game, is way too many.

  3. thebryman says:

Man Randy, you beat me to the punch while I was writing mine, with that said, I agree wholeheartedly with your post.

  4. Randy says:

I agree with what you were typing Bryman!

  5. macdawg says:

Its a sigh of relief to know that Clark cares after many were calling him out for a lack of balls.

He might have signed off on a youth movement, but regardless of what Herm says he didn’t sign off for a year like this.

Glad to see the man take action, starts with him and about time we ditch King Carl.

  6. IISaiNtII says:

I’m not so sure this is the end of Harmageddon (or Hermorrhoid, your choice) just yet as evidenced by Clarks saying he would hold the final decision on him continuing to be the HC.

But, the way I see it:
One down… Feels like a weight has been lifted off of my chest and I can breath a sigh of relief.

I’m anxious to see if this has any ramifications on the field this upcoming Sunday.

  7. Adam Best says:

Harmageddon! Wow — that needs a poster. Hermorrhoid is also great.

  8. dakotadave says:

At this point Herm has got to be considering his options away from the Chiefs. Telling a potential GM candidate who his head coach is going to be is a recipe for disaster. Clark needs to find the best GM available, and let him go to work. I like Herm the person, but believe me, there are plenty of other talent evaluators in this league. I supported Herm all year, but after this week I think he is as good as gone. As far as the rebuild goes, we have TWO WINS…A new coaching staff will not be that big of a setback.

  9. Randy says:

So many questions about teh future, what do we do in free agency, what do we do about a head coach, who will the new GM be, who do we get rid of player wise. Will Tony and LJ stay or hit the bricks, what about coaching staff?

  10. Eric Crane says:

    HARMAGEDDON! LOL

I didn’t believe it when I got a call from KC.

I think Carl did great things too, we just never went all in. 20 years into the 5 year plan and finally Carl is gone.

I’m not going to say good riddance because I think Carl put together a lot of good teams and helped us gain league prominience, no one wanted to play in KC after Carl took over…both opponents and top free agents. The double edged sword of the mega-persona of Peterson can harm KC no more, time for another bomb to go off and start Harmageddon.

I’m going to the game against Miami too, in celebration! Fire Harm and I will go to as many as I can next year too.

    HARMAGEDDON 08
    COWHER 09

  11. IISaiNtII says:

Glad you guys like the nicknames :)

Feel free to go to town with them. I want to see some posters in the stands on tv Sunday!

  12. bannyc9 says:

I would expect Herm to be back at least for next year. But he will have high expectations put on him.

  13. jay says:

Quote from Bill Cowher. “I don’t anticipate (coaching), to be honest. I’m really very, very heavily leaning into not going back to coaching.”

    Clark Hunt’s criteria:
    Shrewd evaluator of talent, check.
    Experience with winning teams, check.
    Strong Leader, check.
    Effective Communicator, check
Blends Into The Chiefs Culture, check.
    Someone Outside The Organization, check.

I’m starting the campaign for Bill Cowher.
This likely gives Herm a chance to finish his next year, and then if that doesn’t work out likely opens the door for Chan Gailey, who Cowher said was the best (or something like that) coordinator he’s worked with.

I think Herm is around whether we like it or not. I disagree that the final year of his contract is null and void with a new GM, a one year transition isn’t unheard of, and Clark is behind Herm. He’s not willing to come out and say so in public because it undermines whomever he brings in, but Herm’s around for another year.

  14. Igorash says:

The name of Scott Pioli has been tossed around for the new GM job. With what he’s done for the Pats for the past few years in spite of working in tandem with cheatin’ Billy-boy, he may be a solid shoe in. Either one, Bill Cowher or Scott Pioli, both would be a damn good start in the right direction to help keep the rebuilding on the right path for the Chiefs Nation.

    G O C H I E F S !!

  15. woody says:

The only problem is that Pioli has been mentioned in just about every GM talk for the past few years and has never gone beyond just talk. I am not sure the holdup of the situation but he does not seem likely to leave.

I say this obviously having no idea who likely candidates are (hopefully not Charley Casserly…) But there are many big names floating out there…

It is a new day for Chiefs nation

  16. Adam Best says:

Well, I think Pioli and McDaniel could leave together if the right situation came up. I don’t think either likes being under Bill Belichick’s shadow. After seeing what Atlanta and Miami have done, I’m pretty sure Clark is going to give the new GM total control and let him bring in his guys.

  17. Randy says:

What about Tony? Will he decide he wants to stick around?

  18. cmalone145 says:

    lets win with the chin!

  19. Moufwash says:

idk how much everyone knows about Clark. I am a big Wizards supporter (insert joke here _______, but all jokes aside its a great time in the supporter section) and follow the game both worldwide and at home.. What Clark did for the Colombus Crew in the short time he took is something to tip your hat too.. He is currently trying to buy Newcastle Untied (EPL); what I am getting at is the guy knows how to run teams, and isnt scared to make moves and face a challange (w/ the English press and structure of the EPL, its a higher pressure league that is harder to succed in). People have knocked him for not being attention starved Jerry Jones, and going to his other teams games when they are about to win the championship; my question is, Who’s complaining now?

  20. Double D says:

Clark’s has said in effect that, although the new GM will be involved on the head coach position, he (Clark) will have the final say. Because Clark and Herm are on the same page about rebuilding through the draft, and given that we are still in the middle of that process, that whoever comes in will have to live with Herm being the head coach at the start of next season. I predict however that if things go badly again next season, Herm will be out well before the end of the regular season. Assuming Herm keeps his job during this period of management transition, I have to believe that the main expectation for him staying beyond next season would be nothing short of a convincing run during the regular season and then winning at least one postseason game.

  21. marcusallen32 says:

Can we please get Bill Cowher into our front office and show Clark Hunt what a top 10 defense looks like? Please somebody with some pull offer him up a big contract like we need to. Hopefully he says see ya later Gunther first things first

  22. YoungAce says:

Moufwash I watch EPL games, never saw a Wizards game tho.

but this just puts me on the edge of my seat for the off-season.

  23. Double D says:

Want another bit of encouraging news? I heard Clark say this morning during a live radio interview that he plans to be very active in free agency this offseason in filling a couple of key holes.

Folks, this is the last piece of evidence I was looking for. I am now fully convinced that Clark reads my posts and is following through with my suggestions. Fellow bloggers, please feel free to share your ideas on how to improve this team and I will see to it that best ones get bubbled up to Clark’s attention for further action.

  24. mushin says:

Here’s the list of possible GM’s Bill Williamson put together over on ESPN.

    Quoted from Bill Williamson: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest

Here is a list of some potential successors, in alphabetical order, to Carl Peterson in Kansas City as general manager:

    * Terry Bradway, New York Jets

Why: He knows the system well in Kansas City.

    * Greg Gabriel, Chicago Bears.

Why: Many in the league think the college draft standout is ready to run a team.

    * Steve Keim, Arizona Cardinals

Why: Many people in the league think he’s ready to be a star.

    * Reggie McKenzie, Green Bay Packers

Why: He has been part of a good thing in Green Bay and he could get a long look.

    * Randy Mueller, San Diego Chargers

Why: He has built teams in the past.

    * Scott Pioli, New England Patriots

Why: Simple: He’s the GM prize.

    * Floyd Reese, ESPN

Why: Former Titans general manager is a seasoned vet.

    * Ted Sundquist, former Denver general manager.

Why: His knowledge of the AFC West would be valuable.

  25. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

If Clark Hunt actually had a “set”, the end of this season would be the perfect time to show Herm Edwards the door. I have seen enough of Herm’s ineffective defense, and I definitely don’t want to see the offense regress after this year. Here are the words Clarky Baby, “Clean slate, clean slate!!!!!!!” Remember them!!!

  26. CHIEFS FAN IN CT says:

    My 2 cents: (quote)

“Under Cowher, the Steelers showed an immediate improvement from the disappointing 7-9 season the year before, going 11-5 and earning home field advantage in the AFC after the Steelers had missed the playoffs six times out of the previous seven years. In 1995, at age 38, he became the youngest coach to lead his team to a Super Bowl. Cowher is only the second coach in NFL history to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first six seasons as head coach.”

I got a woody when I read that!

  27. MasterBlaster says:

See I completely disagree with geting rid of herm now. I have always said. Give him one more year. Before I thought that was a shoe in. Now im a little bit worried. This is why we shouldn’t get rid of herm…

    1. Herm has a great repore with the players. He is like training wheels for the young chiefs. I think they need one more year to come together and solidify that core.

    3. Herm is AWESOME at putting us in a position to draft tallent. Which we (chiefs nation) knew is what we really needed to build a real playoff team. 4-12; 2-14. Music to my ears. Just so long as we dont develope a “Lions” complex.

    2. Herm and Co. Can evaluate tallent. Really. After these next 2 games Herm is going to do what he does best. Draft.

let me give you guys an example…

    (Marty) Tony G
    (Marty) Brian Waters
    (Marty) Alphanso Boone

    (Vermile) Larry Johnson
    (Vermile) Damion McIntosh

    now…

    (Herm) Jared Page
    (Herm) Bernard Pollard
    (Herm) Brandon Flowers
    (Herm) Brandon Carr
    (Herm) Maruice Legitte
    (Herm) Mike Cox
    (Herm) Glen Dorsey
(Herm) Tomba Hali (on the left side at least)
    (Herm) Brandon Albert
    (Herm) Jamaal Charles
    (Herm) Colby Smith
    (Herm) Dwayne Bow
    (Herm) Will Franklin
    (Herm) Mark Bradley (off waivers!)
    (Herm) Tyler Thighpen (off waivers!)

Now you might make argument with a few of these choices as “home runs” but only a few. I want another frickin Herm draft. After that. Then you can pick a new coach.

  28. mushin9 says:

    Master,

I won’t just argue those picks, I’ll scream them:

Jared Page: Home run for a 7th round pick. Bad angles, can’t tackle

Bernard Pollard: See Page minus the home run part

Flowers, Carr, Legette: Look great for rookies, but just like it’s stupid calling Dorsey a bust after one season, it’s just as dumb calling these guys future HOF’ers

Cox: A decent FB that may pan out…we will see

    Glen Dorsey: See the CB’s

Hali: Have you been watching this season?

Albert: Arguably the most impressive rookie of the bunch, but so was Hali in his first year (Hali, are you serious?)

Jamaal Charles: Not enough work to know. He shows flashes, and then he drops the ball

Kolby: How in the world did this name get on here?!?!?!

    Bowe: HOME RUN!!!!

Will Franklin: He’s played in three games. Last week was nice, and the first drive in the first pre-season game was fantastic. Don’t get ahead of yourself.

Mark Bradley: He looked great for 3 games, and wasn’t the knock on him in Chicago that he never stayed on the field….

Thigpen: HOME RUN for a 7th round pick stolen through waivers.

Plus, I think you left a few off the Marty era list:

    Marty:

    DERRICK FRIGGIN THOMAS!!!!!
    Grunhard
    Szott
    Dale Carter
    Will Shields
Jerome Woods & Reggie Tongue (If you add Page and Pollard, these guys make the list too)
    Donnie Edwards
    Joe Horn
    Tony Gonzalez

If you want to count all the “could of beens” then that list would be much larger. Vanover comes to mind.

And don’t forget the free agents. Please god don’t forget the free agents. Every FA that Herm has targeted (with maybe the exception of Bradly, but we just don’t know) has been at best a fill in guy, at worst an outright bust.

    DeMarrio Williams
    Nap Harris
    Boone
    Law

Herm has made some good drafting moves, maybe. He definitely picked based on potential, and you can’t argue with that, but let’s wait a few years before we start buying tickets to Canton

  29. Double D says:

Why the big knock on Pollard? If he’s being forced to make open-field, solo tackles all the time, more than anything that just means the front 7 are crap. Pollard is the closest thing we’ve got to an actual “leader” on defense. If not him, then who?

  30. mushin9 says:

    Double D,

I think you just answered your own question. The only players even approaching leadership is Hali and Pollard which probably explains a lot…

I like Pollard’s ability, but your saftey shouldn’t be out there playing like he’s a CB gambling on help over the top. He is the help over the top.

  31. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

Pollard would be just fine if he weren’t stuck in the Cover Two. Probably the main reason our defense has some raw talent and has looked so dismal on the field is because of the “stinkin’ Cover Two”. Cover Two? Cover Two? We don’t need no “stinkin’ cover Two”!

  32. Randy says:

Um I supported Pollard on the shout box and cyber eggs were thrown at me

  33. mushin9 says:

Pollard is a good saftey, that is servicable. He has issues with tackling. The biggest problem that Pollard has is that he is being asked to be the heart of the defense. If he had some MLB support, it wouldn’t look so bad. But those plays where a TE gets behind the 2nd level, or he has to cover and goes to make a tackle using his shoulder kills. He needs to know the situation. When a back is in traffic and you’ve got 5 Chiefs converging, lay him out. When it’s you and god between the guy with the ball and the endzone, wrap up. I must say he has improved, but KC is still dealing with big play problems and Pollard and Page’s tackling skills are at the heart of it.

  34. mushin9 says:

    Ohh and Randy….
