The Chiefs front office handed out an early Christmas gift today to the vast majority of Chiefs Nation, announcing the resignation of General Manager Carl Peterson, effective at the end of the season.
Here’s what Adam Teicher and the KC Star had to say about the move:
Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson resigned today effective at the end of the season.
“On behalf of my family and the entire Kansas City Chiefs organization, I want to thank Carl for his two decades of service to the Chiefs,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said. “Both Carl and I agreed that immediately initiating the search for the next Chiefs general manager would be the best thing for the future of the organization, and he will be resigning following the 2008 season.’’
Hunt said the search for a new General Manager will begin immediately. Vice President Denny Thum will serve as the Chiefs interim president and general manager.
I’m at a complete loss for words right now. This is the sign we’ve all been waiting for since Clark Hunt took the reigns after the original Mr. Hunt passed on.
How do you feel Chiefs Nation??

I’ll be very interested to see how this all plays out. During the preseason/offseason, there was a lot scuttlebutt about organizational allegiances and whether somebody was a “Herm” or a “Carl” guy and how people had to walk a fine line because they didn’t know how it would all shake out.
Not to say that this means Herm “won” the war by any stretch. With Carl leaving, I’d say whatever happens next is wide open to speculation and a big part of that could well include Herm being next on the list of departures.
We’ll see I guess.
I love it…I feel so good haha…NFLN reports he will step down from all positions with the team…We are done with Carl…My guess is Bill Kuharich gets the position if they go in-house…which is likely…If not, I want Pioli to change everything…BRING IT ON…
Our long national nightmare is over.
Im going to Disney Land!
I can’t even remember the Chiefs before CP! (I’m 26) I just started getting into the team when he first came around. I’ve bled red and gold for the majority of my life and now my biggest (and really only) sports passion is going in a new direction for the first time! Somebody get me a beer!
I think somebody moved Christmas up ten days!!!!
Im afraid Im going to wake of from this!!!
FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, LORD GOD ALMIGHTY WE ARE FREE AT LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Martin Luther Chief
King Carl being dethroned is what we needed. It is a huge change, but if Bill Kuharich is made the GM how big of a change did we actually make. Bill Kuharich was Carl’s right hand man, and is a big reason for some of the personel we have. I like him but i think we need to clean house and bring someone completley new in.
This is going to put asses in the seats again!!!
Watching all those empty seats yesterday had to be weighing on Hunt’s mind.
I will be sick if we go in house!!!!
We must bring in new fresh ideas, and direction. Kulrich is not that choice, I hope and pray.
Does Herm go to? Does he go to San Diego State? This makes the offseason so much more wonderful.
I bet Whitlock is absolutely creaming his jeans right now, he’s gonna be lobbying for Jeff George to be the new GM.
Kuharich is NOT Carls right hand man…they were at odds many times…Kuharich is the reason we started drafting like we had a brain…people like Medlock were Carl flexing his power…
I want a major change, like Pioli…but…Kuharich is more realistic..
I still don’t believe it. The Star has to be pulling one over on us. It’s not April Fool’s Day is it?
It will sure be fun at Arrowhead next weekend!
This is me poppin’ my comment cherry, on probably the greatest news to come to KC for a long time. Ding dong the king is dead. hallelujah!!! So Bill Cowher campaign startin’ back up?
Ian – what do you mean by “big reason for some of the personnel we have?” As in draft picks? Outside of Croyle, I have no major qualms about who we’ve gotten and how we’ve generally fared there in recent drafts. Now free agency, that’s a different story.
omg!!! my english bulldog ran away scared when i read it and hit the desk and scramed omg wat a day!!!!!!!!!!! lets celebrate!!!!
Well, this didn’t solve the problem. The most glaring deficiency is p*ss poor coaching. Maybe it is time for Carl to move on, but it would have been better had it been Herm Edwards.
I say lets win with the chin in 2009!
When I think back to last year, same worthless qb’s, King Carl, Harm, no hope in sight, my God I wonder what the suicide rate at the stadium was? WHO SHOULD WE REPLACE HIM WITH?????
Go get Cowher and give him full control! DO IT, CLARK!!!!
Do you think Whitlock had a heart attack?
Let the nightmare end!!!!
Matt Millen for GM!!!!
Now I see how everyone is so excited about this and i can agree it was time for a change, but you have to give the man some credit. He took a franchise that was going no where and turned them into winners. He is part of the reason that arrowhead is arrowhead. I guarantee you that almost all of you were Carl fans back in the 90’s. I may be alone but I think he did a pretty decent job while he was here. No we didn’t win a super bowl but until last year we had never lost more than 10 games in a season while he was here. There was only one other team to do that during that time, so give the man a break and be thankful that we don’t have ownership like the Raiders.
But…..it looks like King Carl is picking his OWN replacement – this could be cold water.

and its on Fox 4 now! What a wonderful time of year this is!
Hunt said his focus is finding somebody who can evaluate talent.
stjoemo,
I’m not going to discount that he had a solid run in the 90’s, even into the early 00’s, but he really did overstay his welcome, and it has been time for fresh ideas for quite awhile.
STJOE you are right the atmosphere at the stadium is due to Carl P.the best in the league. But so is the current state of the team.
The thing is, I think if Clark doesn’t screw this up, somebody really good could come on board, this just seems like a great opportunity for someone. Out of all the losing teams, this bunch really has a chance to make a leap next year with an offseason done right, and could make someone look really good. Losses are losses, but the team this year does have some parts to build on, a lot of young talent, and plenty of cap space to burn on the right players.
Tony better think twice about wanting to leave now he could be flirting with a Jason Taylor situation.
Clark say it will be out of house. They are looking for someone who has no ties to the organization. I’m F**kin Ecstatic.
I’ve been very quiet lately and I’m sorry for that guys. I have a whole new energy built up now.
Good to have you back Cinco we gained so much from that loss God works in mysterious ways.
I wish I could say I called Clark and told him I was his illegitimate love child and he better make things happen or I’m going public cuz that woulda been the best Christmas present I coulda given all you but it wasn’t me, LOL. Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone, I felt now was as good a time as any to say it. I couldn’t be any happier right now. Well I could, but the memory lives forever.
As a life long Chiefs fan, I have learned the art of being cautiously optimistic. Carl didn’t lose either playoff game at home at 13-3. I’m hopeful we can move into a new era with fresh personnel, but we could just as easily be the Houston Texans for the next 10 years as we could be the Steelers. This is definitely a step away from from the bridge to nowhere, but it’s yet to be seen if its a step in the right direction.
Hiring Marty (which is what I want) doesn’t make us the 2006 Chargers automatically. But it will sure feel good to be moving somewhere again.
Marty? are you F’ing kidding me! I’ll defect to the frickin raiders if we hire Marty as GM! I’m not kidding. If there are any fans here that remeber the Marty generation let me jolt your memory. Before the I hate herm/CP campaign. Before the Vermile “we have a good offense and chitty defense” generation. There was the “Marty Ball” years. And, Like ragnorock lasted for frickin ever. The major complaint was that Marty was a brilliant “bean counter” coach that just didnt have the ability to take us through a playoffs to the superbowl. He could always get us to the playoffs and dash our hopes against the rocks. 1993 v. Buffalo is burned into my memory like 9/11. I still remeber driving aimlessesly around the city (twice!) I was in such shock. NO NO NO. NO return to “Marty Ball”. I dont even want the smell of his playoff choaking arse anywhere near my beloved chiefs. Now if you guys can figure out a way to resurect Hank Stram…we can talk. Or kidnap this Pioli feller. Seriously, I have a van with no windows ready to go.
end of rant
But…..it looks like King Carl is picking his OWN replacement – this could be cold water.
Check out Arrowhead Pride for that story
Hmmm
Him and Clark are working together so maybe, just maybe, Clark won’t let him make a bad call here. Or maybe he will feel like skit about his time with the Chiefs and will do everything he can to get “The Best GM Available”.
Take a look at the article’s date, October 17, 2008. That was almost two months ago, so who knows if it really still holds any weight at this point. Two months ago he wasn’t on his way out the door. Clark signs the checks, so I think I know who is really going to make the decision. I don’t buy that he is making the decision, I think Clark makes the call to distance himself from Carl to bring back the fans, his statement that he is looking outside the organization says it all.
Wow huge change and obviously what the people as a whole wanted.
As questionable as he was i thank Carl for his time here with the chiefs, he brought some crazy highs and lows but i never questioned his dedication
Hope we have a bright future from here on out.
All I have to say:
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
Thank you, I approve this message.
Every single team in the conference including when the Seahawks were in the division went to the Superbowl during King Carls reign except us.
BREATH OF FRESH AIR! ever since i was six i can remember my family bitching about this guy. Finally he’s gone. Just wish i could be there next week, it is gonna be fun.
this is from USA Today, Clark on Herm,
“Ultimately, the decision on his future and the rest of the coaching staff is one the new GM will have significant input into. It will be my decision, and we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”
Carl Peterson’s record with Chiefs.
(1989/1997) First 9 seasons were winning seasons. (1998/2006) Then seniallity set in accompanied with spurts of compentancy.
(2007/to Present day) Ahlziemers took over.

All this means Clark Hunt (Clunt) is committed to Herm Effing Edwards!! Sh*t!! We are probably going to have to endure two more seasons of this total loser before we even think about having a winning football team!!
