Merlin's Magic: Week Ten

by Features

A fourteen point underdog, a team decimated by injuries and we come within a botched snap and/or a two point conversion from beating San Diego on the road. I have to give credit to the team and the coaching staff for an effort like this. This is a game we should not have been competitive in, yet we were and could have won. I was fine with the try for two at the end. We had some momentum and tried to capitalize on it. You could argue kicking the extra point and that would have been a decent play there. Just note that if we had another botched snap or lost in OT, the same folks that are killing Herm Edwards for going for two would be killing him for not going for two. They would be arguing: ’same old Herm, a conservative call’ or ‘why did we try to kick the extra point? We already botched one snap.’ or ‘last game, we never saw the ball in OT, why did he not try for two there?’ The point is that some folks have made up their mind on Herm and are looking for additional reasons to argue that he must go.

In my view, Herm and Carl Peterson are still playing for their jobs. Their stock has improved since the last game but more is needed to bring them back. Tyler Thigpen has been wonderful for us. I still am concerned about his transition to a more conventional offense, but his play is undeniably good. Mark Bradley has been a nice addition for us. We may have found our complement to D-Bowe and Tony G. This may be the signing we thought we had when we signed Devard Darling. It was nice to see Kevin Robinson returning kicks and punts. We need to find out what we have with him. Brian Johnston, alas, we hardly knew ye. Seventh round picks have a hard time staying on the roster if they keep getting hurt. Next year’s training camp will be huge for him. If he doesn’t light it up, well, I hope he got a good education.

Draft Watch

I am still keeping QB on my list of three first round areas of need (along with DE and MLB). However, it’s status in the first round is starting to shake a bit. Looking at the other teams, it looks like Detroit has the inside track to the first pick in the draft. If we still want a QB, we better hope that Bradford and Stafford, perhaps even Sanchez, are in the draft. The other team I would keep my eye on is the Raiders. We could be fighting for draft position with them.

A dominant DE like the ones you mentioned are certainly worth a high pick and is certainly an area of dire need for us as well. You are right, the best player on the board should be drafted. We cannot afford to reach. The pass rush is an issue. I still say we nab Smith if possible, but another team could force our hand on that one and a quality DE will fall in our laps just like Dorsey did last time. An OL in the first day should suffice since it's a deep draft there while picking up a DE or LB with the first round pick. I keep forgetting we might need a QB. Lets hope Thiggy keeps up the good work. With LJ back, we will get to see what he can do with a legit running game (hopefully)

I like FSU's DE/OLB George Selvie quite a bit too. A real game-changer in the mold of #58.

With the high pick we are probably looking at, DD is right, no OL except LT and no linebackers that high. ALbert is doing fine and the OL is starting to look better, but always need more good linemaen. We may have to go DE and I think the top 3 are Tyson Jackson LSU, Brian Arakpo Tx and Michael Johnson GT. Arakpo gets my vote, but Jackson back next to Dorsey has possibilities too.

On draft day, I'm of the opinion that you take the best football player on the board period. Needs, Offense, Defense, doesn't matter. Playmakers are playmakers, if the position doesn't suit you get on the horn and make a trade. Always, always, always best football player.

A trade down would be ideal for us considering the number of holes and the direction the franchise is going in. Crabtree is probably in the top 5 and certainly in the top 10. I can see a team like SF coveting him. They have literally no playmakers outside the numbers and they will be picking in the top 5. I would like to see us draft Smith, make him the LT, and move Albert to guard or RT. You can never have too many good O linemen. The O line seems to be pretty deep this year, so a trade down to get extra picks and pick up linemen in round 2 or 3 would be ideal. Linebacker is a glaring need, and of all rookies, linebackers make the easiest transition to the NFL provided they have a decent D line in front of them. By the way, how about Tank last week? I thought he jumped off a couple of times, but he was timing the count perfectly and blowing shit up. I'm proud of that guy.

I wouldn't mink going D with the first pick, but I don't want to reach for a linebacker and draft for need if there is a better rated player on the board offensively.

I'm kind of of the opinion that you don't use a high draft pick on an OT unless you plan to make him your starting LT. Seems to me we already have that in Albert. I'm pretty sure we'll be able to find a decent G or RT in round 2 or later. Mack and Robinson are probably the only OLs I could see us taking in the 1st round and that would be only if we were picking mid-to-late which, unless we can trade down, is not likely to happen. If a guy like Mack fell to us in round 2, I'd be all over it (unless Crabtree also happened to be there).
Unless Bradford comes out, I personally see us going D with our first pick - Maualuga, Selvie, Jenkins, Laurinaitis, Curry, Moore, M. Johnson come to mind and pretty much all those guys have the potential to make an immediate impact.

I'm a bit worried about this draft. I think Thigpen will end the season strong, but i think herm and will take that oportunity to eff up and take a qb like stafford (who i think kinda blows). This is bad, because when you draft a qb that early, you draft him as your starter which pretty much means we will never get to see what Thigpen can become. I agree that if Andre Smith is there he'd have to be the guy. Ohers a good second choice and should be available. I'd love to see a LB picked but i think we pick a bit too high to do that in rd 1. I don't think Curry makes it to rd 2, but that would be nice. Side note: is Thigpen getting rid of the ball ridiculously quick, or is our o-line actually playing respectably? Bit of both? Good either way.

I'm all about Andre Smith, he's the next Orlando Pace. I would like to see either he or Oher with the first pick. I know Phat Albert has played extremely well, but we need more tackles and Smith is projected to be the best since Pace. I know you're all about Crabtree Adam, but are you still with the emergence of an actual #2? That would be a luxury pick when we have too many holes. I know he's a beast and a difference maker, but I don't want to see us do what the Lions did with Mike Williams (they passed on DJ, thanks Matt Millen!)

I don't think Stafford is that good either. He seems to get frazzled easily and has too much faith in his arm (which is a cannon admittedly). I would like to see Bradford come out but it's not happening. I agree about Losman. He will be available, he's young, has an arm, experience, and best of all, something to prove.

I'm fine with keeping Brodie as a third-stringer as long as we bring someone else (like Losman or a first day pick) in to compete with Tyler. I'm fine with Carl sticking around and then retiring or moving over to the business side after his contract ends next year.

I am not fine with Herm sticking around, but I'm pretty sure it's going to happen. Oh well, it will give me a lot to blog/vlog about. I'm going to just start having fun with it and being sarcastic. Everyone knows how I feel, and most fans disagree. I think Hermaphrodites have the wool pooled over their eyes, but maybe I'm wrong. Who the hell knows?

All I know is that everyone is taking a wait-and-see approach, but as the main Addict I don't have that luxury. Never been a fence sitter.

I'll have Zach keep the bail money ready just in case :)

Whos gonna get the start at Right Guard, if Jones cant go? cuz Jones is soft and weak! how about B.Richardson!

Huard gone, croyle gone, gray is a big tough QB stays,to backup Thigpen, look to draft that kid outta ballstate in the 3rd round. shooter out.

I don't know either way on Quinn Gray. As Adam points out, we haven't seen him play. The only current QB with a job for next year looks to be Thigpen. I can see Huard being done, signing a vet QB (Losman?) and drafting a QB to compete with Brodie. If you want to see Adam completely lose it, imagine retaining the current coaches (and Carl), drafting a QB in the 4th or 5th rounds and cutting that QB in favor of Brodie as the third QB. I am not sure Adam's vlogs would make it past youtube's policies. If that happens, Zach, you better have bail money ready.

I saw Priests last home game he jumped over a big pile of guys and it was a beatiful thing to behold he looked like he could fly.

Impossible to say on Quinn Gray until we see him play, if that ever happens. I'm guessing Tyler and Brodie will be back, and with someone else surely being imported, I'd say that Gray is the odd man out.

I think Quinn Gray needs a little play time since our season is screwed we need to see what we have there before the draft next year. He could be ready to kick ass.

COME ON LJ RUN THE FREAKIN BALL DOWN THE SAINTS THROATS! PLEASE! GOD I MISS BEING ABLE TO RUN THE BALL! REMEMBER WHEN PRIEST WOULD TEAR UP DEFENSES AND THEN WE'D PUT IN OUR SECOND STRING RB(LJ) AND HE'D PUT THE DAGGER IN! THOSE WHERE THE DAYS!

Im cant imagine that Carl is still playing for his job that kind of job security shouldnt exist on planet earth.

Yes Quinn Gray whats his future with the team.

Draft Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC or Andre Smith, OT, Alabama or Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss! With the state of this franchise, we cant afford such a huge risk by drafting QB 1st round! Bradford and Stafford are doing way less than matt ryan did and they are on alot better teams than B.C. was!

I think he was talking about Quinn Gray.

And it's good to know that we still have the love there between us, man. But do I really need an excuse to get rid of a guy who's gone 1-18 during his last 19. The evidence is irrefutable.

At least we agree on Stafford.

Randy:

I didn't see Quinn play this year, so I do not know. We called about trading for him, but no go on that.

Adam:

Please, come live in my world. It's called 'reality' Yes, you are looking for excuses to get rid of Herm. Your vlogs say it all. I still love you though. Keep in mind, I am not saying we retain the Carl/Herm show. Right now, I have not made a call either way. You made your call a long time ago and are not open to changing your mind.

Sudden, you are so right about the Raiders. Look for them to draft a great athlete, not always a great football player.

So, let me get this straight? Even though Herm is 1-18 in his last 19, it is the folks who want him gone who are desperately looking for excuses? I wish I could live in your world :)

Agree on the Bradley Effect and Thiggy Smalls, but Stafford? If that happens the header will just be me with a noose around my neck. He's no Matt Ryan, or even Joe Flacco for that matter.

Even though the Raiders might pick before us, we can rest assured that Al Davis will pick a player who can run a fast 40 but belongs in the fourth round, not the first.

Merlin do you see Quinn becoming a contributor in the future as far as the qb position?
