Loss #7 – Bucs In OT

by Chiefs

You guys smell that?  Burning, nauseating, putrid odor? I do, and I know what it is–it’s the Kansas City Chiefs defense and man oh man does it stink to high heaven.  Once the cornerstone of a proud city and it’s fans, now its nothing more than the butt of a joke-a cruel, ugly and not very funny joke.

I’m glad Herman Edwards called a time out twice for the Bucs with seconds to go in the fourth quarter.  I didn’t believe the rumors that Herm couldn’t manage time in a game, but now I see they were and are true.  In essence giving the Bucs who were out of timeouts two more to gather their thoughts and discuss strategy that ultimately lead to them tying the game.  That is awful time and game management win lose or draw.

The pass rush up the middle is virtually nonexistent, pretty sad too considering the Chiefs have the #5 overall selection from last years draft-Glenn Dorsey and a second-year player in Tank Tyler in there who are constantly getting pushed back or shoved out of the way.  The defense as a whole refuses to get better, letting running backs slip through gaps that aren’t being covered up the way they should be.  I don’t know if it’s personnel or coaching, maybe both, but something has to give doesn’t it?

Tyler Thigpen sure is looking legitimate don’t you think, dare I say the real deal?  I’m still not ready to jump on the bandwagon quite yet, but I’m loosening up getting ready for the leap.  One more game like this, and I might have to start my propaganda about the Chiefs not needing to draft a QB in next year’s draft at least not with their first pick.

Bernard Pollard, in overtime, could have held Michael Clayton to a minimal gain but instead tried one of his great “bone crusher” hits and cost the Chiefs 29 yards.  The sooner the Chiefs can get DaJuan Morgan ready the better off they’ll be. Why won’t he and the other players pretending to play defense wrap their arms around the opposing player?

Draft Watch…

Speaking of the draft, let’s all bow our heads and say this prayer;  Please Lord, don’t let the Chiefs draft Matt Stafford.  Amen.  Anybody see that game?  Awful, just awful, he was playing against a big time defense and folded like the French.  He has the arm and that’s it.  I have seen enough of Stafford this year to stand by the opinion that he is not that good of a college quarterback let alone a NFL number one overall prospect. He is the classic case of a player being hyped up by the media and has been made up to be better than what he really is.  I’m sure he will travel to Indy this off season or have his personal workout on campus and he is going to look verrrrrry impressive, but when everyone goes back and looks at the tape, I think (hope) they will realize that he doesn’t have the mental makeup to play the game at the next level. The Chiefs obviously still need help on the defensive side of the ball, a MLB is looking pretty good to me with Pat Thomas not doing anything such as tackling or filling the gaps.  Right defensive end would be a good bet as well although Turk McBride does appear to be able to stop the run-kinda.

plus we find out horrifying crap about what the Chiefs have been feeding us all the time. HA!

Thats another great one Woody.

Who bought me? Who bought me ?

Your bought the minute they pay you a salary!

Wonder who feels bought and paid for in the
Chiefs organization.

Steven, I agree with you that the defense played awful yesterday but I would defend them in saying that they were killed by injuries, absolutely....If we had Flowers, DJ and Surtain in the nickel, I believe the game would have been won...but that is not what happened...

The T/O is kind of a chance you take...The fact is it wasnt that they werent "ready" it was that they had the wrong personnel group in (whether that is Dline rotation or a nickel sub)...You can take the chance that Tampa is just rushing and their confusion will offset your mismatch, but Herm didnt want to take that chance apparently...

Thigpen looks good but as Sudden said in another post, I think he needs to keep progressing and Gailey needs to stay creative or he will go down hill like Derek Anderson did last year...Speaking of DA, if he is available in the offseason I want him...It is not his fault for the most part that they are doing bad...I think he would play well for us or any other team...

Pollards hard hit was ridiculous...why do that? I understand you might be trying to intimidate and fire up ur team mates but the risk is not worth the reward...obviously...

No to Stafford...No to Tebow...Yes if Bradford...but i doubt it...I say take the best OL or MLB (you dont need to rush the passer if you cant stop the run, you dont need a good QB if you cant keep him off his ass)

Adam, to address your question from the other thread...I think with the situation on the line right now is doesnt matter if the best lineman is a LT...take him...The situation is that we need replacements at 3/5 of the positions and that our best guy can play at 4/5 of the positions...if we bring in an elite guy to play where Phat Albert is, he can just move to another place we need him and dominate there...hopefully...

I have never seen Citizen Kane...so i will quote another movie..."SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE....IT'S PEEEEEOOOOOOPPPPLLE!"

Love the Citizen Kane reference Adam!

Great article. I also believe that Sam Bradford is the best(and maybe only) QB worth going after in this draft(if he declares). McBride is our only bright spot on effort in the defensive line. Even though he gets the late hit called I love to see any type of effort that will send a message to the other QB. We need depth at Corner with a good draft pick next year. Herm has an eye on CB's so I think we can add depth to the failing Maurice Leggett. All in all, I see improvement from last game, but the veteran QB's continue to oust us in close ones.

It wasn't just Flowers that was out, DJ was out and he drops into a lot of coverage underneath. For the kind of throws TB was making. Flowers out was definitely a hit and Leggit blew a crucial play, and Donnie Edwards was out for a few plays limping around so he wasn't 100% either. The D was banged up as the game wore on.

As for the T2, Gunthers favorite D is the 4-3 cover 2, The T2 is just another cover 2 variant.

Truth of the matter is we don't the T2 as much as people would like to think. Our defense is a combination of a lot of different looks/packages. I think it also bears pointing out the Gun was experimenting with the T2 well before Herm showed up.

It is his responsibility. Then again, who is responsible for ol' Gun? I also think Gun and the Tampa Two are a match made in hell.

Thank you Adam,

Although to answer your question, I feel it is Gunther's job and his coaches to get the defense ready to play. Does Herm play a part? Absolutley, but I think the responsibility is Gun's.

LMAO! Randy, you are my new hero after those two lines. Big +1...

just a couple of my favorite parts of that movie

And as Chuck Kane said "At the rate the Hunt Family is losing money they will have to close Arrowhead down......in 60 years.

Also relevant

Hunt family worth............no man can say......

Adam, I believe the problem was in the secondary where our inexperience and talent was being strained at that point. We were probably seeing an example of the reason why a guy like Leggett is not a starter and/or why a guy like Brackenridge was initially cut (and only recently brought up from the practice squad). Injuries on defense are starting to pile up and kill us. A coach can only do and expect so much with second/third tier talent. Like I said in another post, drafting Malcolm Jenkins in the first round might not be that bad of a move.

If we fired Herm two weeks ago and were 3-5 it could happen. Now, with Harm in the fold and us 1-7...like homeboy says in Citizen Kane, "impossible, IMPOSSIBLE!"

Steven,

Bravo, my friend. Any post which rips Harm -- deservedly so, by the way -- and says Matt Stafford isn't the one gets a 9.5 from this judge. I do think Turk McBride looked pretty good yesterday, though.

I love where this is going. It could happen.

Double D,

Who's job is it to have the defense ready for the play then if not Harm's? Sick of people apologizing for this clown. That is exactly what is going to give him another year in his office.

I told someone the same thing Dave and they laughed at me. But its true, there is a scenario where we could win the division but backing into the playoffs again makes my stomach turn.

ArkansasDave,

Crazy to even consider, but I was thinking the exact same thing. My guess is that 8-8 wins the AFC West. Biggest problem I see for the Chiefs right now is how banged up they are in the secondary. Losing Flowers when we did yesterday was probably the biggest reason why we lost. If we have to rely on Leggett and Brackenridge, we're in big trouble methinks. It's a damn shame too; for a second there I started to feel like we might be turning the corner. Without Surtain or Flowers, I'm afraid our only chance to win is to come out ahead in shoot-outs.

I thought our run defense looked a lot better yesterday.

As far as the late time outs go, Herm basically had no choice because our defense was not ready for the play. Just because he called a time out at the that point doesn't necessarily make it bad game/clock management.

I think we have a chance to make a run at the division. It is reasonable to think that this division could have a 7 and 9 winner. The chiefs have 4 division games left, and they've already beaten the division leading Broncos. Every team is horrible - if we can sustain this improved play it should be enough to win those 4 divisional games, which would give us the tie breaker on both of the favored teams to win the division. That puts us at 5 and 7. Unlike the rest of our division - we only play ONE team currently with a winning record in Buffalo, who is starting to show their true colors.
New Orleans could be a loss, but it's at home.

To make a long story short, if we sweep our divisional games with this improved play and win a couple of the other weaker games on our schedule toward the end... we have a chance to be the next new york giants! Call me a homer - but it all starts on Sunday.

Whatever your opinion of Sundays game its awesome to see Jason Whitlocks positive article on the team itself and the positive comments about the article.

Now that hopefully everyone is off the Matt Stafford train i would like to throw it out there and see what you all think of Tim Tebow. His numbers wont blow you away but he's big, mobile, got a cannon, smart with the football, and oh ya only thrown 2 picks. If we were to trade down I wouldn't be upset at a late 1st to 2nd round pick for this guy (if he decides to leave.) I hate the sec and the gators but you gotta admit he's got alot of potential. Not a first year starter but maybe one of the future?
