First of all i really enjoy read AA! so i decided to register and start voicing my thoughts (being the diehard chief fan that i am). I think we should trade LJ as soon a we are allowed to. Ive always been a big LJ supporter, but he has burnt his last bridge with this fan! He’s becoming a slow developing cancer to this team. In your opinion or whom ever reads this comment, what would his trade value been for pick/s in the 2009 draft?
I know I’m in the .00001% minority here, but I think the Chiefs shouldn’t have sat him on the bench the last 2 games. He’ll get what he deserves from the NFL as it is. Larry Johnson is the Chiefs best running back, hands down, and he needs to be on the field. I have never seen a Chief as hated by Chiefs fans as LJ is, even during the drug-ring era (Bam Morris, Vanover, Carter …)
I do agree with you Whir on the “hated” part. This is a troubled young man who has given a lot to this franchise, including a record 416 carries and a playoff birth. Should we be upset and hard on him? Yes. Should we hate him? No.
I really have mixed feelings on this. I think the NFL is definitely going to suspend LJ and quite likely it is going to be for a number of games. LJ will be sitting out the next few games and then “may” be able to return for the end of the season. By that time, I think he will hardly be in playing shape and may sit as much as he plays. I don’t think Herm Edwards is probably a real big LJ guy. Should LJ play in a Chiefs uniform again? My vote is, yes definitely. Realistically, LJ may have engineered his own demise with the Chiefs. I foresee him returning after his suspension, playing only sporadically, and then being traded prior to the NFL draft in the spring.
Does anyone else think that Jared was treated differently from LJ? I mean Carl sat on LJ’s
criminal charges but let the press have a field
day with Jareds. It appears LJ had charges before
Jared even got to the team.
It seems as though its going to be very hard to trade LJ with his guaranteed 19 milli, obvious issues, wear and tear, age, and position. I’m sure you guys would agree that in comparison to other positions, RB’s are a comparable dime a dozen. Denver has a plug and chug type of zone system that with stellar run blocking, one can certainly run the ball well with a variety of players. A team would have to really want Larry to pay that much both in the present and in the future.
However, LJ is one of the best Chiefs ever and has always been one of my favorite players. I’ve liked his callous and abrasive disposition to the media and his swagger. Unfortunately, it became difficult for him to eventually differentiate between club girls and NFL defensive backs when employing the age-old stiffarm.
Not at all sure what to do with the guy. He’s getting PAID no matter what happens….
I totally agree with you Whir. LJ should be playing, unless the NFL suspends him. If Herm sat him down for a violation of team rules, like missiing a meeting, etc, fine, that’s one game. He should be playing until the NFL says he can’t. And I ABSOLUTELY would not trade LJ. He’s worth alot more to us, then we could get in any trade, now that he’s been totally devalued. He’s still a great player, as witnessed by the Denver game that he carried the team on his back.
I think LJ should on the Chiefs roster. Sure, he needs to be in “timeout” for a while but he is still a key component to this offense. I don’t think any of the other RB’s on the roster will do much to help this team progress. But then again perhaps we’ll become a passing team like last Sunday with Kolby averaging 1-yard per carry.
LJ needs to get his shit together both on and off the field. He was supposed to be the foundation and the leader for this team, especially for the offense. Frankly, he has let everybody down on those accounts. I have no qualms with him being a Chief long term but right now he’s no where close to fulfilling his role.
He will get back and he will play and The Ironman will be just fine…he has had his “Come to Jesus moment” of sorts…he will recover and move on…so should we…
I love this site even more. With all the dissing and abandoning going on elsewhere in Blogland, it’s nice to be at a site that doesn’t immediately cast the first stone. LJ gave a lot to this team and he’s going through a rough patch in life now. He needs our support. I love it here!
this is AMERICA ain’t it? WTF Larry gets a second chance if PacMan gets 12-15 whatever he is up to. For God’s effin sake Michael Irvin snorted up half of Colombia and gave a tearful speech at the Hall of Fame, let’s not crown LJ as public enemy number one yet! There are plenty of women out in Kansas City every weekend that deserve to be pushed in the side of the head or have a drink thrown or spit at them from time to time. For God’s sake…
Let me be the first to say, this all is serious about his legal issues, but, I think we are just sparing him from carries and damage to keep him fresh for the next few seasons and stretch his NFL shelf-life out. Then again, I love conspiracy theories…so?
You know what I think I’ve realized? … I don’t think it’s L.J.’s run-ins with the law that have people wanting him out of Kansas City, nor do I think that it’s his inability to run through the brick wall that is our O-Line… I think those who are demanding L.J.’s head are those who are bitter about the way this season has gone… Because I can almost guarantee that if we were on the winning side of our record it would be because of #27. He is REALLY the biggest reason why we snapped our losing streak and against a high powered Denver Broncos.
And with that said, if L.J. was playing with a half decent O-Line, a half decent passing game, and better play calling, NO ONE would hating on L.J.
Why?
Because he’s our guy. It’s not like he’s just becoming an underachieving RB. He was injured last season (and in a game where he kicked ass, even behind the leagues worst O-line) and this season has just been bad for the entire team. Herm is making stupid decisions in not playing L.J. Had Johnson played on Sunday, he would’ve gained those 3 yards on the questionable drive Chan and Herm called.
And if we DO cut L.J…..
I really don’t wanna hear ANY bitching from those of you who are calling for his head now. Because in my opinion, Jamaal Charles nor Kolby Smith can carry the load that we need them to in order to have a productive run game. I’m sorry, but that’s just the way I feel.
Larry Johnson was the AFC’s best rusher even AFTER the Carolina game AND a bye week… If that doesn’t say it all, I don’t know what does… cause I, as have Adam and others given L.J.’s stats here on A.A. time and time again.
You people really need to think of what you’re asking for.
By the way, goshootergo, great to hear from you and thanks!
The Chiefs are an old team, whats our history on dealing with this kind of issue? The name that pops up in my head is BAD MOON RISON
please help me! HOW DO I UPLOAD A LOGO/PICTURE? i cant figure it out.
Larry BAD MOON Johnson
http://www.gravatar.com will do it for you big shooter
You the man, Randy!!
thanks randy, my picture up! Thats right, I wear my team on my sleeve!! If we did trade larry what would his draft worth be??????
How cool Big Shooter! I think when it comes time to trade LJ his draft will be worth about my red parking pass.
Im the man!
Considering I traded for LJ after week 2 in my fantasy league, felt like a genius for two weeks, and am not more than a bit disgruntled, perhaps my opinion is somewhat biased. But I think that Roger Fidel Goodell is gonna give him a harsh enough sentence and there is no point in us sitting him until then.
You could argue for either sitting him or starting him in this case. Unfortunately, I think Herm made an example of LJ for the young guys. I know they are grown men and aren’t little tikes, but young and talented NFL players can become anything on the spectrum of total monumental bust or 1st ballot HOF. What makes them busts? Being idiots. What happened with Ryan Leaf? A lot of things, but mainly too much grandpa’s cough syrup and late nights partying. Herm is sending a message to his team that no matter who you are or what you have done, nobody is above the long cock of the law and when you become a pro football player, act accordingly.
I support LJ through this tough time in his life and hope for the best. I’m not jumping ship on one of my favorite players or on my favorite team. He won’t be traded and this will all go away, like Steve “I’ll beat you up” Smith at the beginning of the year.
Sudden, I also have LJ on my fantasy team. Luckily I drafted Earnest Graham for insurance later in the draft.
I’ve never been an LJ fan. The reason has little to do with his attitude. The Chiefs pull him out of third down plays because he cannot protect the passer and has not had great success as a pass catcher.
His running style is upright and for all the talk about how big and hard he is to tackle he sure seems to go down easy.
His best year was when he was behind a line that could produce a large hole that he simply ran through. When was the last time you can recall LJ “making something out of nothing” such as evading tackles and picking up a nice gain. He picks his hole and runs to it. Any back in the NFL can do that and make much less money. The only reason he is making the money that he makes now is because he was on Carl’s good side.
Let’s assume that LJ was a rookie right now, would you want the Chiefs to draft him in the first couple of rounds? Then why pay him as if he were worth a first round pick?
Add his bad behavior to the mix and you have to scratch your head as to why the Chiefs would sign him to the largest contract ever.
When he is in the game the defense knows one of two things, either the Chiefs will hand the ball to him or there will be a short pass because he cannot block. That gives the defense an advantage.
Look for the Chief’s offense to get significantly better with him out of the system. Part of this is not his fault due to poor play calling but what is the offensive coordinator to do when he is a one dimensional player?
Larry is not a good pass catcher? Where were you when he took a pass down to the 1 against the Raiders with Vermeil and then leaped into the endzone for the win. He just doesn’t get passed to all that often. They rather see him, as you said, hit the hole and punish. He is a throwback to the great runningbacks of times past. They didn’t pussy-foot around to pick up more yards, they punished the defense to wear them down. Neither Kolby Smith or Jamaal Charles can take as much touches as LJ. Charles got hurt already!
The question is not whether Kolby can take carries, but whether he can do jack with them.
