Waiting For A Fresh Brew

by Make it a Double

I have been a fan of the Chiefs ever since I first discovered pro football (early to mid 1960′s) and I honestly cannot remember this franchise ever being in this bad of shape or ever seeming so without direction and hope. If there is a light at the end of this tunnel, it’s going to require the Hubble Telescope, outfitted with night-vision, for me to spot it.

One question that perhaps begs asking is whether some major change has occurred in the sense that  some core problem now injects and permeates a culture of haplessness into this organization and if so, what might that be? Herm Edwards? The quarterback carousel? The veterans? The rookies? Carl Peterson? Clark Hunt? Or some dysfunctional combination of some or all these elements?

Well, for me, one thing is apparent above all. There is total breakdown of leadership throughout. Herm Edwards, regarded by many as one of the best motivators in NFL, can’t seem to find any way to coach up his team. The only time I’ve seen Carl Peterson make an appearance this season was after the Denver game. The Brodie Croyle experiment and every Plan B associated with that have decapitated the offense. Veteran playmakers, rather than providing an example to their younger teammates, are found looking for any way out or for trouble at 2:00 AM Saturday morning. Rookies do not seem to be improving in any measurable way. What Clark Hunt is doing to fix any of these problems is anybody’s guess

Would hiring a new head coach turn things around any quicker? I highly doubt it; more likely it would only set us back a couple more years, at a minimum. Would replacing Carl Peterson offer immediate improvement? Perhaps, but only if that new GM was onboard with keeping Edwards around for at least a couple more years in order to give this young team time to gain the skills and experience they’ll need to one day be competitive. Perhaps too a new GM might inject a fresh way of doing business into a place where the management approach has worn itself out on the players, agents and fans with whom it has done business for the past twenty years.

What about the veterans on this team? It simply cannot be argued that they are giving much of themselves in the way of game-time leadership. Not to single him out, but Brian Waters has perhaps had the most to offer (to the press anyway) on that subject and while he seems to be talking the talk, is he really walking the walk? The quality of play demonstrated so far by the offensive line that he leads is reason enough to believe otherwise. The same holds true for veterans on our defense.

Well, what about Clark Hunt?  Well, what about him? Isn’t he supposed to be the buck’s final destination? If lack of leadership is the core problem with the Chiefs, as I believe it is, then responsibility for that should rest squarely on the shoulders of ownership.  But that begs yet an even bigger question – does Clark Hunt have it in him to do what it takes to assume control of this franchise and set it on a proper course?

I believe the answer to that question is that it’s too early to say. Lamar Hunt had a tremendous passion and vision for the game that I doubt will ever be matched by his son. This generational “passion gap” may unfortunately be something that plagues Clark Hunt for the rest of his tenure. Hopefully not; time will tell.

My real suspicion however is that the Cold Dead Hand of Lamar Hunt still holds this organization firmly in its grip and until Clark Hunt fulfills all the tasks and promises assigned to him as executor of his father’s business estate, he will be handcuffed to his father’s ways and wishes for a time yet and thus unable to fully move forward with his own vision and personnel for this franchise. Until that day arrives, don’t be too surprised if leadership seems to be in chronic short supply.

Yes, something major did happen to this organization. It happened the day our founding Chief took his place with The Great Spirit. His hour of mourning remains with us now and for a time yet still.

No doubt man no doubt, but you know what scares me the most is there is another game coming. Maybe this time around they'll carry it into the next week as far as realizing themselves they are not that bad and need to continue to play as a team.

There are a few things that piss me off about Herm to tell you the truth and maybe we can get into them later on but for now I'm going to enjoy the rest of my week-end.

GO CHIEFS

pc9165,

Okay, man, sorry about the kool aid thing. Hey, today was better. Tyler thigpen came to PLAY. Others did, too. That's what I am talking about. That is what we should be seeing. We played offense today at least during the first half. If Herm would wake up and realize you have to score in the modern NFL I would find him easier to tolerate. We came up short today, but at least it looked like something. Looked like a football game for a change.

Alright I'm sorry for that last statement, this was the first time I ever commented on any of these blogs and was mainly referring to the main story and just happened to see your comment last but you're right I have no ground to tell you that and yes I am just as frustrated as you. I am beginning to wonder about Herm myself but if you take away his last season with the Jets which was marred by injuries(including 3 QB's I believe) he was 35-29 and 2-3 in the playoffs, 1 being a 41-0 rout of the great Peyton Manning. I am not really defending him but we could have done worse. I am just sick of all these youngins' who think they know it all and mistakingly thought you might be one too. Once again I apologize. But still come on man already worse than those 2 decades. And as far as Fisher he had built a perrenial playoff team, even came 1 yard short against the Lambs of winning it all after the 99 season before he had to dismantle and start over, yeah it took time but they made it back. As far as 93 and Joe Montana that was Marty's fifth year and finally realized he had to make a change, that's the year we changed to the "west coast" offense. Maybe Herm will soon realize it too. I won't be mad if he is fired but I won't be mad if he isn't. Was todays game just another fluke like Denver? It pisses me off we lost again but I thought we looked better. Like Jabba the Whitlock said after Denver just repeat it.

And by the way I hate kool aid.

GO CHIEFS

pc9165,

You have a lot of nerve to tell me to find another team. I was there in the stands during the debacle of the 70's and 80's. You could sit wherever you wished, no one was there. Where were you? Herm Edwards is the most pathetic excuse for a coach to ever disgrace the NFL. You and your kool aid drinking buddies need to get over it.

Yeah GET OVER IT!

Come on man I was born in 1965 and started watching the Chiefs in the 70's and you're telling me this is already worse than those 2 decades of crap. It was because of Lamar's loyalty that brought on the first mess. Don't get me wrong I loved mister Hunt and thank him dearly for choosing Kansas City and was very sad to see him go. Now all of the sudden you want Clark to turn into the Al Davis/Jerry Jones/Dan Snyder type owner. Thanks but no thanks! Yeah I kind of hope Carl goes ahead and leaves but if he stays for his final year(yeah next year is his LAST year everyone)what's that really going to hurt. The reason we never won a Super Bowl with him is because he did not find a way to keep Nick Lowery. That move right there "my friends" is the reason we did not become the next(back then)and last(no Pats now)NFL dynasty. You do not just get rid of a HOF(I know he's not, thank's to Carl, but he should be)kicker. He beat out Jan(a HOF'er)and should have stayed untill he was beat out and we wouldn't be here arguing about this. Now he could have avoided this latest debauchery by recognizing the decade and a half of our Chiefs OL dominance was at an end and hired a special OL scout(and DL for that matter)when Vermeil was still here. But here we are today living in misery and to coin some dumb-ass NFL cliche's it is what it is and we are where we are. With all of the young talent that is here(now and added through next years high picks)one of these days it will all click(see Titans). Don't blame this on Clark, give him credit for finally having the ball's to do it and if he keeps Carl after next year then yep you are right and all bets are off but let that happen first. So yes either GET OVER IT and watch every minute of misery with me now(just like I did through 70's and 80's)or just shut the fuck up and find another team.

GO CHIEFS

Get over it, my ass.

One only has to consider the overall condition of the Chiefs team that Edwards inherited to understand that rebuilding (primarily) through the draft was the only option. I would have liked to have seen a few things done differently in terms of the draft and free agency during the previous offseason but on the balance I agree with pretty much everything that was done and the reasons for it. Would it be a lot more fun to see the Chiefs winning some games? Sure, especially if we had some stability/consistency at QB and maybe more than half of an OL. This is a rebuilding year, get over it.

Let's look at some recent history, okay? Since the 2001 season Herm Edwards is 53-65 overall. In his time with the New York Jets, Herm was 39-41. Since becoming the Chiefs head coach (cough, cough), Herm Edwards has a record of fourteen wins and twenty-four losses. His losses as the Chiefs head coach are nearly double the amount of wins. What a loser. Currently our team has no offense, no defense, no special teams, no anything. Can it get any worse? Yes, we can lose all the remaining games this season and limp into the off season with a demoralized and disheartened team led by a loser ready to carry on the tradition next season with a disconnected owner who thinks everything is "fine".

I would consider Marty Schottenheimer's tenure as head coach to be relatively recent Chiefs history. In the overall scheme of Chiefs history it is not that long ago. As far as Jeff Fisher goes, in case you hadn't noticed it has taken Mr. Fisher nearly twenty years to accomplish what he has. Sooner or later if you hang around that long, one of two things is going to happen, the coach is going to grow into the position and become capable of fielding a winning team, or he will eventually have a winning team by default. Of course, Mr. Fisher is not recent history having begun his career with the old Houston Oilers. Or is he, in your books? And in terms of your contention that I am the only thing going against Herm Edwards, then so be it. I would gladly take that stance, anytime and anyplace, because it is what would be best for the Chiefs.

Marty had to leave because he lost control of his team along with the confidence of management and fans. The only thing that Herm has going against him right now is fans like yourself. Whenever a team has a bad season, everything goes under the microscope and fans start rampaging for the head of the coach. Normally, in such cases, the management understands and appreciates the long view which is why a coach like Jeff Fisher still holds his job with the Titans. Have you noticed how well his team seems to be been doing lately?

1993, Gee that was like what, 15 years ago? You consider that to be a recent memory?

Sorry, I only put one "t" in Schottenheimer on the previous post, my bad.

Sorry Double D,

But there's no cigar on that one. I would include Marty Schotenheimer in coaches of recent memory. Marty's teams played in a total of ten post season games. They won three of the ten advancing as far as the AFC championship game in 1993. I had the pleasure of watching a replay on the NFL Network about three weeks ago of a game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos which took place on about October 17, 1994 (not real sure about the date). There is absolutely no comparison between Marty's so called conservative offense and Herm Edward's so called conservative offense. Herm Edwards has never had a team which had an adequate offense, nor will he ever. He knows nothing about offense. All Herm would have to do in order for me to be okay with him staying would be learn how to coach, field a team with both defense and offense, and shut his mouth when he didn't have anything to say so we wouldn't have to put up with the mindless drivel which so effortlessly escapes Herm's lips. That is not going to happen. Because this is the case, Herm needs to pack his bags, the sooner, the better.

Over the course of 7 seasons, Herman Edwards' teams have made it to the playoffs 4 times, and advanced twice therein. Not many current NFL coaches can make such a claim and certainly no Chiefs' coach in recent memory can boast as much.

With no QB, no OL, and no D, there's no getting around the fact that this will be a bad season. Deal with it, keep it in perspective.

While I do blame Edwards almost entirely for the QB situation, I believe we should all be allowed to make a mistake once in a while - even a glaring one. I imagine Herm Edwards will learn a lot from this season and (hopefully) be a better coach for it.

Sandya,

In answer to your question about you being the only one who thinks Herm is completely to blame for the current situation, no you are not the only one who thinks so. Certainly others are complicit, but the full responsibility for the sad state of affairs the Chiefs find themselves in rests with Herm Edwards. The man is a joke. He does not deserve to be head coach in the NFL. He has proven it time and again with both the Chiefs and the Jets. It is time that someone who actually has the power to remove Herm Edwards from the coaching staff does so no later than the end of this football season. Why prolong the agony? It is evident this football team is going nowhere except into the dumpster. Either the idiot who hired him (Carl Pardonmysuckingson) or Clark Hunt needs to pull the plug on this moron.

Woody I'm 22 as well..Used to live in kc but now out in cali for college..Damn its hard to be a chiefs fan out here..Everytime I go out to a sports bar to watch the game their are tones of steelers and cowboys fans but hardly any chiefs fans..

I was talking to a chiefs fan and he was saying that chiefs fans used to fill up this specific bar on sundays for the game but they quit coming around last year..

I value DD opinion but I just don't agree at all with keeping Herm Edwards at all..I personally feel tnat Herm was inept his first year here

sandya I am gonna defend DD for a moment I suppose...He meant (i believe) that the statements made by Clark Hunt kind of gave Harm a "clean slate," as DD put it, when they formally accepted that they were now rebuilding. I am coming to believe that Herm and Carl will be safe no matter what...

I am only 22 so I am proud to say I discovered the Chiefs when I was young and they came back to beat Denver on MNF...amazing game...I remember growing up confused "Joe Montana played for someone other than the CHIEFS?!?!?!" haha ohhhh silly shild...

Great post DD.........I also discovered the Chiefs in the mid-sixties. I also don't ever recall the team sinking so low as they are right now. I just hope that Clark can figure out what caused this and get it fixed before the team is totally destroyed.

We have a lot of talented players(some veteran and a lot of young ones) that will develope serious attitude problems without the proper coaching and leadership. Hopefully the problem(s) get corrected before no one cares anymore.

Wow Double D you really are ridiculous..I wonder If I've ever agreed with a single comment you have ever made..Clean Slate? This year? Last time I checked Herm has been coaching this team for three years..This became his team in 2006..I'm tired of hearing excuses from Herm and you..All free agent pick ups have been terrible..Herm deserves full responsibility for the qb situation of today and the total destruction of our team..

Herm deserves no more time..I am soo against firing Carl and not getting rid of Herm..Atleast we know Carl has been successful..Harm is a joke..Let's see Herm knew Brodie has a history of injuries in highschool and college..Saw him get injured 2-3 times in 2007 and we still built this team around him in 2008..Am I the only one who thinks Herm is 100% to blame for this situation? He's the leader, and we are the worst team in the league..We're terrible..I hope we lose the rest of the game, b/c once herm is gone, we can start anew...Oh and carl can get his ass out too for hiring this joke of Herm Edwards

Adam, the problem I have with bringing in a new coach is it would give him a "clean slate" which to me is a step backwards if not two. The way I see it, Herm got his own clean slate just this year and we have to let that play out for a year or two to get a feel for where it's really going even if clean slate = clean clock this year. Impatience with the process at this early stage can only lead to greater impatience and years upon years of frustration. I'll take cool heads and steady hands over hot heads and itchy fingers any day of the week.

Something I realized the other night, while watching MNF. Bob Kraft (I think it's Bob?), the owner of the New England Patriots, is always shown in his owner's box during the games. WHENEVER the Patriots score, whether it's their first 7 points or their 41st point, he jumps around the owner's box high-fiving and cheering like a kid. He is a fan of the game and a fan of HIS team. No one can argue that the Patriots are one of the most successful franchises this decade and I believe that is where their success starts!!

Where the F is Clark Hunt on game day??

Is he even in KC for ANY of the games (save last week due to Emmit Thomas honor)?

I honestly do not blame Herm or Carl (man it hurts to say that) anymore, I blame the INCOMPETENCE of our SPOILED little rich kid owner Clark "The CLUNT" Hunt.

That is all!

It would take a real NFL coach at least a year to undo Herm's destruction. Giving Herm any more time to do damage to the organization is not the answer. The answer is to have a real coach and let's get started on the process of having a real football team instead of Herm's screwed up fiasco.

Maybe there's QB in the CFL or AFL ready to make the transition as well.

Not participating in free agency year after year makes no sense to me. Avoiding it with the last go around is biting us in the ass now. We could have tapped into it to improve the OL if nothing else. WR is another lingering defeciency we could have better addressed through FA.

Love the article, especially the POV on Clarky, except...

The only way I am on board with giving more years to Harm is if Clark really isn't going to undertake in free agency. You see, at least that would guarantee us a top five pick for as long as Herm was around. Have to acquire talent somehow.

I am frustrated that we picked up Weatherford as our punter. The Saints cut him for poor performance. There are young studs out there like Jimmy Kaylor (CSU grad 2008) that did great for Atlanta in camp. Grab the guy... We need all the help we can get!

I am only partly in agreement on this. I kind of am unsure whether or not hiring a new coach and/or GM would set us back, it could go either way really. I really dont think it is going to happen either way, despite what Clark said at the end of last season about seeing progress I think, like you said, Clark is honoring his father's wishes to let Carl's contract run out...

Either that, or Clark just doesnt have a pair and Carl has "wormtongued" his way into a crazy amount of manipulative power...and all is lost...haha
