Tony Not Gonzo
Well, this is why the Chiefs are a league-wide laughingstock and the Cowboys are perrenial contenders. Tony Gonzalez is now going to be a disgruntled, albeit professional, locker room leader. Additionally, the liklihood of us ever getting anything for him or him ever winning a Super Bowl just dropped quicker than the Dow did a week ago. For now, Angelina and Billy Bob are stuck together. Meanwhile, the Cowboys scooped up star wide receiver Roy Williams for a first-rounder and a couple of second-day picks. There are teams that get good moves done, and then there are teams that don’t.

Exactly! Very well written. This is why King Carl has to go — NOBODY wants to deal with him – players, agents, other teams. Whitlock will have a field day with this.
October 14th, 2008 at 3:32 pm“There are teams that get good moves done, and then there are teams that don’t.”
Precisely. Neither the Chiefs or Tony won today.
Poop.
October 14th, 2008 at 3:38 pmWhat report are you reading about Williams? The ESPN Bottomline just said that the deal was for a 1st, 3rd, and 6th round pick next year.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:11 pmActually, here’s the relevant piece from the ESPN article (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3643295)
“The Cowboys will give up a first-round pick in 2009, plus a third- and sixth-rounder that year for Williams and a seventh-round pick in ‘09.”
Doesn’t seem to be a smart deal at all.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:14 pmThat was the early report on ESPN News. I have edited to coincide with the updated info. Thanks!
October 14th, 2008 at 4:16 pmAnd it could win it all for the ‘Boys. Roy can play, man. That’s a championship move. The Giants and Eagles could be sorry they didn’t get Gonzo after that move.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:19 pmConsidering that the Girls are positioned pretty well for a playoff run, the Williams deal makes some sense. The Chiefs are at least a year away from contending so it makes little sense to compare what the Cowboys are trying to do at this point versus what the Chiefs are in the midst of. Apples and oranges.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:26 pmHmmm seems like the cowboys would need someone to throw the ball to Roy doesnt it?
October 14th, 2008 at 4:34 pmThe Boys are F’d in the A for the rest of the season. Too many injuries in a brutal division. I’d take the AFC West any day.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:35 pmAt this point, I’d argue that WR was not the Cowboys’ problem. They just seem to be slowly imploding this year, which will only be exacerbated by the injuries they’ve sustained, particularly during the Cardinals game.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:36 pmAdam,
I have to disagree about Roy Williams and his play. The Cowboys already have a player that takes too many plays off in TO. Now they have added Roy Will-Drop-It. I have a best friend out here who is from Detroit and a HUGE Lions fan. We have watched way too many games, and bottom line, I wouldn’t have given up a 1st rounder for him until he proves he doesn’t drop the ball 50% of the time. In the game against the Bears especially (didn’t watch football this weekend, BLASPHEMY I know!) Roy was thrown to about 16 times and literally dropped 6 of those. They are pro’s, “if the ball hits your hands you should catch it!”
October 14th, 2008 at 4:41 pmAdam get a clue, the Cowboys just grossly overpaid for someone whose impact will not be far and above that of Patrick Crayton, they traded 1st, 3rd, and 6th round picks for a #2 wideout who Terrell Owens will soon be whining about, and something tells me its only a matter of time before TO is not getting enough balls because they are going to Roy Williams. Secondly why would you trade Tony Gonzalez for a 3rd round pick? The odds of a third round pick hitting for us are not that great man. Finally Tony Gonzalez is the best player in the history of this team, trading him does nothing but alienate a fan base. Having him on this team whether they are going 1-15 or 16-0 is better than trading him for a single draft pick, Gonzalez is only 32 and with the shape he keeps himself in he could play for another 6-7 years, that’t not a stretch. The Chiefs suck because they have no offensive line, not because they don’t make trades at the trade deadline, which almost no NFL teams do anyways, get a clue bro.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:42 pmStop talking about the Chiefs Adam, your opinion is inane and irrelevant. Stop hating Carl Peterson for the sake of hating Carl Peterson. This team will be good in 3 years, and it will be because of Herm Edwards and Carl Peterson bringing in all the guys they are bringing in now. I don’t know if they will both still be with the Chiefs, but the 20+ players they will eventually have drafted will most likely be.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:44 pmGonzo, I know you’re upset about having to stick it out in KC, but don’t take it out on little old me.
Two things:
1.) T.O. does not take plays off. The guy is an unbelievable blocker. Want me to go to the tape? Didn’t think so.
2.) If Carl and Herm are still here in 3 years and we win a Super Bowl, Gonzalez88, I will make you the lead writer of Arrowhead Addict. Won’t happen. Guaran-damn-teed.
That’s all
October 14th, 2008 at 4:51 pmCome on Gonzalez..I agree that keeping Tony was the only smart move in this situation (unless we got a first rounder) but Herm is not the answer man..Wait three years??????? How long are we supposed to wait for the almighty Herm to make this team decent? If we finish 4-12 or worse, I think Herm needs to go..I know Herm needs to go
October 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pm@ Gonzalez88 – Adam’s opinion is just that: his opinion. He’s entitled to it just as you are here.
On that note, I’m not trying to be an apologist, but I think Carl made the right move. We’d all be bitching if he gave up Gonzo for a 6th rounder. Instead, people are bitching because no trade went down. If a good offer wasn’t there what the hell was he supposed to do?
Also: Schefter reports that Nap Harris has been cut.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:52 pmI wonder if Gonzalez88’s IP address = 1 Arrowhead Drive
October 14th, 2008 at 4:53 pmI think some marquee players with the Chiefs organization just found out their true market value today.
October 14th, 2008 at 4:59 pmAnd to the “poor Tony” groups, I agree, poor Tony. He is stuck with millions of $$$, a gorgeous wife, a killer pad, and a spot in the hall of fame waiting. I, on the other hand, have got it made in the shade. I wonder who I talk to about the money I blew on season tickets this year.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:01 pmI personally think Carl read my piece, thought about the money he’d lose and kept Tony G.
Your welcome?
October 14th, 2008 at 5:02 pmThe only reasonable excuse for not moving him for either him or us is precedent. But that doesn’t mean anything to me because I don’t think Carl should be back next year to have said precedent used against him by other players and GMs. This was King Carl looking out for Carl, not for the Chiefs, the fans or Tony G. That’s why I’m pissed.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:03 pmAdam, I’m not a Carl supporter. But you ASSUME this is Carl looking out for Carl. What proof do you have here? I won’t compare you to the Hutt, but you seem to be making accusations here based on personal feeling rather than fact.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:13 pmBoy I must say I think the Cowboys overpaid. And why would Tony want to join Jared up in the great white north. Check the star tribune sports section, sounds like a Chiefs blog. FIRE FIRE FIRE WE SUCK !!!
October 14th, 2008 at 5:13 pmYou gotta wait like 5 years man, waiting 3 years aint that bad, the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game in 10 years. And when I say it will be because of Herm it’s because he knows players, not X’s and O’s, everyone knows that. Look at the guys Herm is drafting, and there will be at least 10 starters he drafted while he was here. When Herm is gone these players will be reaching their prime and the team will begin to have success. Herm Edwards running the ball up the Center’s ass 75% of the plays on gameday when we have no center is the problem. His drafts thus far have been well above average. Not sure how quick you people expect a turnaround to be? Trading Tony Gonzalez would do nothing for this team, keeping him, does very little, so keeping him is the better choice. By the way Napoleon Harris was just released.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:16 pmToo late my friend! Check post # 16!
October 14th, 2008 at 5:18 pmTouchee
October 14th, 2008 at 5:21 pmWho’s fault it it we don’t have a center then?
I suppose its not Herm or Carl’s.
Its only the 2nd most important position on offense but considering who we have at #1 its not surprising.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:21 pmor Touche, whichever it is
October 14th, 2008 at 5:21 pmJust kidding man. Fine by me if it’s true. Wonder if there are any replacement prospects out there at all?
October 14th, 2008 at 5:22 pmLoL, good centers are not a dime a dozen man, you probably can’t even name a good one first of all. Branden Albert, Brandan Carr, Branon Flowers, Jarrad Page, Bernard Pollard, Tamba Hali, Dwayne Bowe, Tank Tyler, Turk McBride, Jamaal Charles, Brad Cottam, and maybe even Barry RIchardson will be future starters, and im sure I am leaving a few out, and you can’t judge Croyle at all with such a crap Offensive line, you can’t call him a sissy either when you see the hits he’s taking. Give Peterson a rest man look around the league it aint that easy to build these teams from nothing.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:24 pmI wonder how many of these Carl-Herm supporters would vote for a third Bush term? Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm…
October 14th, 2008 at 5:24 pmHow about Jeff Saturday, or Jeff Faine, or Kevin Mauwaii or Andre Gurode in Dallas…or Matt Birk who is head of the Plaers Association isn’t he? The Jags have a good center in Brad Meester…and Olin Kreutz is no slouch in Chicago. Its cool you can name a lot of Chiefs players tho…good work there.
I can judge Croyle on one thing…he hasn’t won a game yet. Therefore, he is a loser, by definition if nothing else. I only saw him take the one hit this year and you saw how Mr. Glass ended up. C’mon dude.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
October 14th, 2008 at 5:31 pmWell…its like this. If we couldnt get at least a 2nd rounder for him, its better he say in KC. Screw trading a Hall of Fame TE with gas left in his tank for anything less than a 2nd.
And on that note, how the hell does Roy Williams go for a 1st 3rd, 6th and 7th in 2010 and we cant get a single stinking 2nd for the best player on the damn team!
Hell, if you want wide receivers ill trade D. Bowe for a 1st, 3rd, 6th and 7th haha.
Anyways, good news Napoleon Harison was cut. Bout time.
I would also really like to see what all of those 6 teams offered for TG…and what we turned down.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:43 pmthey just wanna be unbeatable at madden 09!!!!
October 14th, 2008 at 5:44 pmI honestly hope that the Cowboys beat both the Eagles and the Giants for them refusing to pay a reasonable price.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:46 pmGonzalez88 when you have tons of draft picks and a roster as weak as the Chiefs it is very easy to draft starters, my grandmother could draft starters for the Chiefs.
October 14th, 2008 at 5:47 pmGonzalez you make nooo sense…If we have had such great drafts then why are we arguably the worst team in the league? Why does Tamba Hali look really bad? Why are none of Herm’s draft picks all stars? Why don’t we have a good center? If Herm is such a good players coach, then why did he drag out the 2007 team on the field and think they we’re capable of playing play off caliber football team..I’m getting really fed up of people just simply not looking at the facts..
Get real! This is not Herm’s first year! This is his third year of coaching this team, and I haven’t been too impressed with anything I’ve seen to this date..We had 3-4 good games that really looked good in 2006 but that is it..
Per Tony Gonzalez – I think he deserves to be on a team that is competitive, but not at this price..Tony is worth nothing less than a first round draft pick..He’s the best TE to ever play the game, and is certainly still within the top four in the league..Heck I’d still argue he and antonio gates are the best..Trading him for a third round pick is absurd..The giants can stick my big fat boots up their asses for wanting to give us a 6th round pick..I hope they lose first round of playoffs for that
October 14th, 2008 at 6:31 pmI could’ve sworn I saw a 300 pound man slam Brodie Croyle into the ground DIRECTLY on his shoulder, and then fall on him, and his shoulder separated, not much to be done about that. And as for not winning a game in his career, he’s like 0-8, 0-9, with a HIGH SCHOOL offensive line, I mean Brady, Manning, and Favre would all be out with injuries behind our O Line. And it’s not that easy to draft quality starters which Herm has done at almost every position, save QB, wait til after next year’s draft then we will have a semblance of an O Line, as for the C position you just named the top what, 7 Centers in the league? And im shocked there are that many decent ones. This team was 10-6 just 2 years ago, this will only be the 2nd straight year missing the playoffs!! What do you expect?? Honestly, what do you expect? This team lost 9 games in a row last year without its best player, I don’t care what LJ was doing when he was in the lineup, they were 4-3 with him, 0-9 without him, it ain’t Brodie guys, sorry. They will be 3-13 this year, 5-11/6-10 next year, and then in the playoffs in 2010 after they draft a QB in the first round of 2010, Sam Bradford if I had my say. Just relax this team sucks, but it’s going somewhere, the Rams and Raiders are who you don’t want to be.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:34 pmPriest Holmes, Trent Green, Eddie Kennison, and Dick Vermiel are not walking through that door, you guys are dillusional!! Haha upset that a rebuilding team is awufl, LoL, this aint MLB, and they aint the Rays.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:36 pmYou guys are the same guys who probably weren’t upset when all the old crusty guys we loved drove this team into the ground by getting old and retiring.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:40 pmFurthermore for those who don’t understand why this team is awful. They had the best offense in the league when they had 3 HALL OF FAMERS on the O Line, now they have 4 High schoolers, and Branden Albert and shockingly they have no offense whatsoever. The lack of the offensive line then creates an abundance of what? Yes, 3 and Outs!! which do what? Yes, put a huge strain on your defense. The defensive numbers as well as the offensive numbers are a direct result of the pathetic offensive line which not only allows the offense to produce no points, but it also forces the defense to be on the field CONSTANTLY which inevitably leads to a ton of points, as we have seen. I would be willing to wager that the O Line will be MUCH MUCH different next year, and in my opinion it will be much much improved and the entire team will benefit as a result of the offense being able to stay on the field longer at the VERY LEAST.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:48 pmYou know what?
I AM freakin’ happy that we kept Tony. I’m glad that he didn’t get dealt. And in response to your comment, Adam (”this is why the Chiefs are a league-wide laughingstock and the Cowboys are perrenial contenders.”)
So what, man! I’d rather be a rebuilding, young team that is going through the motions than a team that blows it EVERY F*CKIN’ YEAR! AND “albeit” with 53 Pro-bowlers! I’d rather lose WITH young guys, than lose with T.O., Tony Romo, a great O-Line, a great Defense and special teams.
I’m not gonna sit here and pout that Tony didnt have it his way. No. Tony Gonzalez (though I love him and always have) is eating his words. He says he’s red and gold for life… Than thats just what he’ll be… Sucker. And as its been said here… We dont owe Tony jack sh*t. He had all the records. He is now known as the best TE the game has ever seen. So what if he didnt win a Super Bowl (yet). Keep playing. Do what you do best.
I’d rather be Tony Gonzalez (with a ticket to Canton, holding the All-Time Tight End records possible, and the title “Best TE ever in the NFL”) than be Tiki Barber (who will be lucky to EVEN induct someone into the Hall Of Fame). So, there that is.
Plus, if you think Brad Cottam would have stepped up… Youre out of your mind.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:52 pmThank you Roc, thank you, and Brad Cottam is better than you think, he will be the starter someday.
October 14th, 2008 at 6:55 pmOk… But “someday” is not on Sundays(this season that is) bud.
October 14th, 2008 at 7:03 pmAdam- right on with the TO no plays off, that guy WILL lay ferocious blocks, most of the big plays that arent made by him catching have a block(or 2) thrown by TO.
i would have been thrilled if we could have ppicked up a roy williams
October 14th, 2008 at 7:06 pmGonzalez88 I got your back.
Jerry Jones seriously overpaid (again) for a marginal talent. He has an obsession to always have the latest and greatest toys. But it’s the (one time)unheralded guys like Romo and M.Barber that make the team go.
Trading Tony G would have been a huge mistake for anything less than a 1st rdr. One thing that should always be considered in a trade is “Is it likely I could replace the player’s contribution to the team with what I am acquiring for him”? In Jared Allen’s case, the answer was yes. We got 3 picks including a first rdr. But If you trade TG for say a 3rd rdr, what are the odds that player will be as effective as Tony is right now. Many 3rd rdrs never pan out at all. The number of them that become top 5 players at their position is very, very small. And that’s what we have with Tony. Even a step slower, with no established QB and a rebuilding line, he remains one of the top 5 TE’s in the game today. He probably will still be top 5 next year as well. After that, who knows. But where else are we going to get that production? Brad Cottam is a project. He’s got a future, but he’s not ready to start. Any TE we draft next year is likely going to need some time to learn the NFL game. Who’s going to take the coverage off DBowe?
October 14th, 2008 at 7:09 pmThat’s one thing I think Chiefs fans who want Tony traded don’t get. Even when a great player starts going down a little bit, the defenses account for him and his absence causes a chain reaction. Remember how DT completely changed teams offensive game plans. They had to keep in more blocking help and avoid 5 step drops. Well as you all should know with Tony, teams still double him almost every play. Teams sometimes put their best corner on him part of the time. You think any team is going to double Cottam or put a CB on him?
In closing, I have had this fear for sometime that Tony would suddenly lose it, get hurt, or want to be traded. The fact is we simply can’t spare him. We don;t want to be using our first rdr on a TE, and guys picked below that are more miss than hit. The only way to offset the loss of him is to get stronger at the 2nd WR position. Somebody other than DBowe has to be a playmaker in the passing game. Playmaking WR’s are easier to find than HOF TEs, so that seems the logical direction to go. Anquan Boldin anyone?
Gonzo-
You apparently haven’t been around here long, maybe you have but believe me when I tell you, I did not expect us to be good. I expected us to go 4-12.
You challenged me to name a center and I named a few off the top of my head. It so happens that you say they are the top 7 C’s in the league so I guess I have some clue what’s up.
My point to your mad ramblings are – we know why we are bad and most of us think its Herm. No one expected playoffs… (cue Jim Mora…playoffs?)
However, we expected a lot better than whatever you call the last few games including the inexplicable Denver game. See- some of us watch that Denver game and see what we are capable of, and then have Herm turn in 4 stinkers…either Denver isn’t as good as we thought or Herm sucks at getting his team ready to play, QB aside. Or maybe we are tanking games?
A lot us us also don’t want to wait til 2011 to see improvement when we are 39 million under the cap!!! There’s no reason we couldn’t have brough in a Damon a Damion and a Niswanger replacement and a MLB to boot. Unfortunately Clunt and Carl have a brick and mortar project coming on and are using “rebuilding” to save some jack. End of story.
October 14th, 2008 at 7:22 pmPlus you should take a few hours to keep clicking previous entries at the bottom of the page and realize you’re trying to rehash all the Chiefs’ mistakes and positives that we have covered here on this site in a few comments; which is like trying to get a bachelor’s degree in a weekend seminar at a Holiday Inn.
So lets see my season tickets are worth keeping for a couple of more years?
October 14th, 2008 at 7:28 pmEric Crane – Thank you for that…Good to hear some sound insight…We are sooo far under the cap limit I don’t understand why we didn’t bring in some talent at key areas…But wait we got Devard Darling! The fastest WR in the league, who couldn’t even out run the patriots secondary! Every year with Herm our free agents have been crap..I don’t believe Herm is that good of a talent evaluator anyways..
October 14th, 2008 at 7:30 pmI’m not going to be the one to tell you to give up Randy. I might raise hell but I’m not a quitter…
yet.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:07 pmOK last comment for me folks….(yaay right?)
I literally just made this up…
Knock Knock….
Who’s there?
Orange…
Orange Who?
Orange you glad we didn’t trade Tony Gonzalez?
October 14th, 2008 at 8:21 pmFor our sake? Yes. For his sake? Hell no. Poor fella.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:49 pmExcellent ending E-Man. I know this. I am all for rebuilding. I really am, and Im trying to keep an open mind. I also know this. When I was at the Denver game, I watched LJ score repeatedly, run like a deer, and Tony play at the top of his game too, its the most fun I have had at Arrowhead in a long time. And right in the middle of a rebuild. Why do we have to accept loss after loss after loss when the Denver game showed we can rebuild and still play damn good ball. Why do I have to go to the game this Sunday and watch up play like shit just because we are rebuilding? I dont think I should have too and I think it can be done with a good mix of current talent and new players.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:50 pmYES Im glad we didnt trade TG, I went and got my 88 jersey out of the trash tonight, just beat the garbage man.
October 14th, 2008 at 8:51 pmI feel dumb posting this late into the lifespan…but…
I firmly disagree with your analysis (opinion)…The Cowboys deal for Roy Williams was ridiculous in the price…paid far too much, that is NOT the way to get things done…
AND, who would you have had us trade for? Who is out there that we need that was also available…nobody that was willing to trade cheapish…
I am glad Tony is still here…a 3rd or 2nd would have been acceptable, but nothing less…glad we didnt get desperate…
Meanwhile I am looking to PURCHASE a Tony jersey..
October 14th, 2008 at 9:34 pmGonzalez88, you are making some silly statements.
“Gonzalez is only 32 and with the shape he keeps himself in he could play for another 6-7 years, that’t not a stretch.”
Yeah, he could play tiddlywinks for another 6-7 years. He’s got two years, maybe three, left. Outside of QBs or kickers, you’re going to find very few NFL players playing at that age, especially at a position where you’re taking a beating from 260 pound guys who run a 4.6 40.
“now they have 4 High schoolers, and Branden Albert and shockingly they have no offense whatsoever.”
You want to say this to Brian Waters’ face?
October 15th, 2008 at 12:42 amGuys my thoughts on TGs durability are 3 years max with a losing squad like our heros and 5 to 6 with a team that could consistently see success for those next 5 to 6 years. Id like to see someone call Brian Waters a high schooler yes Panther me too.
October 15th, 2008 at 1:29 amWe have GOT to court some free agents next year along with the draft.
October 15th, 2008 at 1:58 amI think it is 2 yrs with us…3-4 with a good team…on his longevity…
I would say from Center to the Right we are very weak on that old line…but who doesnt know that…
October 15th, 2008 at 1:59 am
