Gonzalez To Join Jared In Minnesota?

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: NFL | COMMENTS: 24 Comments

It looks like Jared Allen is campaigning for his boy Tony Gonzalez to help him out with his purple reign up North. If that happens, I’m guessing a whole lot of Chiefs fans will be rooting for the Vikings come playoff time. The Vikes’ offense could definitely use some Gonzo power. From TwinCities.com:

Jared Allen sent a text message Saturday night to Tony Gonzalez, his good friend and old teammate from the Kansas City Chiefs. The word is, Gonzalez wants to be traded and the Chiefs are open to making that happen. Anyway, about that text message. Allen sent it after getting wind of the trade rumors.

“I said, ‘You want to get traded, man?’ ” Allen said he wrote in his text message to Gonzalez. “I was joking with him. I said, ‘Why don’t you come join me in Minnesota?’

The two teams have shown that they can get a deal done before, so you never know. Stay tuned, as we’ll be watching the Tony G situation like a hawk over the next 48 hours or so.

This team is turning into more of a joke day by day..Hey DJ did ya ever consider Tony wants out because he knows their is no light at the end of the tunnel? Meaning Herm Sucks..

Receiving anything less than a 1st round draft pick for the best tight end to ever play the game and arguably the best currently does no make sense. I honestly feel sorry for Tony so I’m fine with trading him, but receiving a 6th round draft pick is a smack in the face and the Giants can kiss all of our asses for that..He is still within the top two in the league..Herm has systematically ruined this team..It’s terrible..We’re a joke now.

  2. sandya says:

To all you Herm Lovers: Give me actual proof that he is a good coach..Love to hear it…Time to quit drinking from the cool-aid..

  3. bquirk26 says:

i found this from way back in early september, i knew i read it somewhere but took me forever to find the quote

Gonzalez: “You know, a lot of other guys would have demanded a trade. Brett Favre, Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas…a lot of franchise guys changed colors, and wanted to. Not me. I’m Red and Gold for life.”

    so much for that….

  4. Double D says:

    Yeah, it’s called lip service.

  5. Double D says:

“I’m guessing a whole lot of Chiefs fans will be rooting for the Vikings come playoff time.”

    Count me out.

  6. Adam Best says:

12 years of Red and Gold purgatory and you still don’t feel for the guy? You’re a cold-hearted fella, DD. I’ll be rooting for Tony G to win a Super Bowl no matter where he goes. I’m a die-hard Chiefs fan, but I’m also a die-hard Tony G fan.

  7. danzinski says:

I’m sure Gonzalez would enjoy being dropped into the black hole that is the Vikings’ offense.

  8. Double D says:

Not really. I just see this as Tony trying to play the role of Maximus when Proximo tells him “win the crowd and you win your freedom.” He’s using his popularity to force Peterson’s hand and the problem I have with that is that a big thing about the last contract that Tony signed (and don’t forget he threatened to leave over that contract as well) was supposed to mean he would retire a Chief. Guess he’s not as Red and Gold as he wanted everyone to think, huh?

Everything was great and glorious for him when he was part of a team that was winning games and the stadium shook. Now it’s not fun and it’s not glamorous and he wants out. That to me says a lot about just how “class” his act is. The fact that he was the one who set this whole thing in motion and forced the team’s hand tells me he has become a “me first” kind of guy. He is not the lockerroom leader / guru motivator he wants people to think he is. Truth is, he is nothing more than a prima donna.

No, if he leaves, I will not cheer for him – I will root against him and not just that, but hope more than ever before that the Chiefs make it to the Superbowl before he retires. Sorry, I’m not going along with the whole hero-worship agenda. Not this time.

  9. Double D says:

Seriously Adam, how can you even refer to it as Red and Gold Purgatory? He was a key element of some very, very good teams with huge media attention and massive amounts of fan adoration. But in the end, “teamplayer” also means he was as much to blame as anyone for the Chiefs not winning playoff games, not making it to the Superbowl. He has had his shot here – many times over – if he hangs around, he may yet again.

From a business side of things, allowing him to leave would be insanely stupid. A lot of people buy tickets to see Tony Gonzalez and once he’s gone, they’ll be gone. Mark my words, this move, more than any other, will be the coffin nail for this team.

  10. Adam Best says:

The coffin nail? We’re already six feet under, my friend. Red and Gold Purgatory = no playoff wins since 1993. That’s 15 years, or half of my life. When Tony re-signed we were also coming off a playoff appearance. Trust me–he didn’t come back for this.

The Chiefs deserve this for sticking the greatest TE ever with our joke of a QB carousel. Tony has given 12 years to this team, like the Phins and J.T. it’s time for the Chiefs to be unselfish.

I think we’re in agree-to-disagree land here, DD.

  11. BucktheFroncos says:

Put me in DD’s camp. “Red and Gold for life” my ass.

  12. Double D says:

Neither we fans nor the Chiefs front office owe Tony a damn thing. He, just like every other player, was brought in to help this team win a championship and he, in particular, has been loved by fans and paid exceedingly well by the Hunts in the process. As far I’m concerned, if anybody owes somebody something in this town, it’s Tony G who still owes us. What’s worse, regardless of whether he stays or leaves, he’s no doubt turned the Chiefs lockerroom into Three Mile Island for the rest of this season. Thanks a lot Tony – what a “team” guy you’ve turned out to be!

  13. Adam Best says:

Double D, you’ve proven one thing right–there’s definitely an “I” in Chiefs. What more could the guy have possibly done for the Chiefs and Kansas City?

By the way, Brian Waters is actually on my sh**list to be honest. That “riding coattails” comment about Tony G was ridiculous. If either of you are washed up, it’s you No. 54, not Tony G. Tony G. would instantly make any contender better. B-Dub acts like he’s going to be a Jurassic Mitch Richmond lounging on the end of the Lakers’ bench. Stupid.

  14. Double D says:

Clark Hunt should quit the pretense and move the team now. Arrowhead is gonna become a ghost town.

  15. Eric Crane says:

the Chiefs are locked into a 25 year contract since this renovations deal, with the county I believe. They aren’t going anywhere.

And come on, Tony didn’t turn our lockerroom into Three Mile Island. Sheesh.

This one is on HERM dudes. He pissed Tony off with the record debacle…if he had gotten the attention he wanted and the recognition, he would coast on that for weeks. Herm and Co. should have known that.

  16. Adam Best says:

Assuming Herm and Co. to “have known” anything requires suspension of disbelief and a ginormous leap of faith. Is Harm the WITL (Worst In The League)?

  17. Double D says:

Now how would you even know that Crane? Seriously, Tony doesn’t get his record and throws a tantrum until he gets traded “to a contender?” Not even. For the record, the truth of the matter is that Tony went to Carl Peterson after the Atlanta game to have him look into trade options.

This is all about what Tony wants, not about what Herm supposedly did or didn’t do to Tony. Tony has decided it’s just not fun here anymore and the prima donna in him wants to get something for himself – only for himself. As much as you want to make this about Herm and/or King Carl, you simply can’t paint it any other way other than Tony doesn’t want give anything of himself to the rebuilding even though he claimed otherwise at the beginning of the season.

  18. Adam Best says:

I’m seriously beginning to wonder if we are looking at the same situation here, DD? It would be selfish for the Chiefs to keep Tony since they are obviously not serious about winning. Tony’s just being honest.

  19. Eric Crane says:

    DD-

First of all, I know this becasue Tony himself said it. He had a dozen family members there. He had planned on breaking the record at home. He was 3 yards away.

If you played in the NFL for as long as he has, in the same city, with nary a complaint…ever. You ask for one little 3 yard out and get told no?!? I’d be pissed too. I’m not saying this event is what Tony had on his mind when he requested a trade but it didn’t help anything.

“It will still be the record, but I’m just a little disappointed by that,” Gonzalez said Monday. “Not just a little. I’m highly disappointed. I wish I could have gotten it with a win against the Broncos, a home game, my whole family is there, they were going to do a little ceremony and stop the game and stuff.

“I’ll get over it. I’m still a little upset about it, but I’ll get over it. You can call it selfish if you want, but I don’t think it is. It’s not about the record. The record is going to come no matter what. It’s just that I wanted to do it in front of the fans. I wanted to do it at home. I wanted to do it against the Broncos, our rivals. It was a good situation to go and get it done. I felt like we had the game won anyway and I could go get a catch real quick.”

  20. Double D says:

Adam, if you honestly believe the Chiefs are not serious about winning then why even be a fan? Think about it.

  21. Adam Best says:

Uh, well, they probably are serious about winning, but only under a certain overhead pricetag. But if they are that just means they are cheap and inept. I was born a fan in St. Luke’s Hospital, and deep down I believe that the NFL’s greatest fans will eventually inspire this franchise to get its act together. I’m sorry I’m not a Chiefs apologist. I believe that tough love from the fans is what will convince Clark to hire the right people and fire the wrong ones.

  22. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

I have been a Chiefs fan for a long, LONG, time. without a doubt, this is the Chiefs darkest hour. We have no offense, no defense, precious little on special teams, and no coaching staff whatsoever. What in the HELL is anybody thinking in the Chiefs front office? Rebuilding? My ass! These folks are totally destroying a great football franchise. What is really sad is that there are those who say we are progressing nicely according to Herm’s plan.
