Win #1 - Denver
Well let me just say it is good to get the monkey off the backs of not only the Chiefs but their very loyal fans as well.
Just a couple of points.
If the Chiefs are serious about winning the rest of the year then Damon Huard (for better or worse) is the obvious choice at quarterback even with Brodie Croyle healthy. After all “you play to win the game” as we all know, so if Herman Edwards truly practices what he preaches, then the choice is a clear one. Say the Chiefs win next week, do you give the keys to the car back to Brodie after the bye? Or do you say the job is Damon’s until he loses it? Tough call if you ask me. I think Herm let’s Croyle have one more shot regardless of what Damon does.
Why won’t the Chiefs blitz more? When they did against Denver they were effective-the front four was unable to get to Jay Cutler, but with the blitz they were. I would like to see a little more blitzing in future games. I wonder if that is a Gunther Cunningham call or a Herm call? Are you guys surprised the D-line isn’t able to generate a pass rush? Hali has been fairly nonexistent so far.
Derrick Johnson showed up to play today and boy did he look special. That was what I was talking about when I predicted him to be voted to his first Pro Bowl this year…there’s still time DJ, don’t worry.
I hate to jinx this, but every since the second half of the game last week against the Atlanta Falcons, the offensive line has been playing a whole lot better. Maybe this “cohesive unit” thing Herm has been preaching about holds a little water.
I have Larry Johnson on my fantasy team from work, I wasn’t scared to take him in the second round and right now I’m looking pretty smart. LJ and the O-line looked good, the key will be whether they can do it next week and for the rest of the season. I’m happy and excited by what I saw, but I’m not ready to state the Chiefs rebuilding aches and pains are through. Branden Albert going down is going to hurt, but of all the positions along the front, which one would you rather see go down? Herb Taylor played well during preseason and many (including me) were harping about getting him in at the right tackle position.
Draft Watch:
Anybody see the Georgia-Alabama game? See what I mean about Matt Stafford? He threw into double coverage waaaaaay too much for my liking for a player ranked as the #1 QB coming out this year (if he chooses, he is a junior). If that is the best QB in this year’s crop, then I hope the Chiefs pass if they are in the top five come draft time. I still think the best option for the Chiefs is to explore with all the man power they have in the font office and find somebody setting on the bench of another NFL team that is ready to get his shot. Drafting a rookie QB to come in and start next year will be that much more pain and suffering we as fans will have to endure before he learns what he’s doing.

September 29th, 2008 at 8:51 amInteresting Stats on our offense:
After 4 Games, LJ is third in the NFL in rushing yards, just 7 yards behind Michael Turner for the lead (we’ll get it next week).
Dwayne Bowe is 13th in receiving yards (4th in AFC). Not bad for an anemic offense (of course, both Broncos receivers are ahead of him).
September 29th, 2008 at 9:03 amI think John Parker Wilson in the later rounds of the draft is a smarter choice than Stafford in the 1st round. He’s a little shorter and doesn’t have quite the superior arm strength Stafford has but I think mentally he is far superior. I’ve only seen him play two times but each time he was very accurate and had great poise. He also is more athletic than Stafford. I think Stafford will bust.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:07 amCBaller, that would make him the second “All-Time Leading QB from ‘Bama” we’ve drafted. Gotta love the irony in that.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:26 amFrom Woody Paige in the Denver Post:
The Chiefs used Larry Johnson, the Human Humvee. I kinda like that term for him.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:27 am[...] And what was the result? Chiefs win, 33-19. [...]
September 29th, 2008 at 11:39 amI saw the Bama game and agree that Stafford is way over-rated. OU’s Bradford looked very sound btw - he’s still at the top of my list for first round QB pick. Even though Louisville lost, I thought Cantwell looked pretty good - remains my dark horse favorite as a day 2 pick. I thought Wilson made some pretty good/smart throws too - decent but not Cantwell caliber. Besides, John Parker Wilson sounds like the name of some ROTC crazy that one day decides to go on a campus shooting spree.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:44 amSudden: Haha ya I know but they aren’t the same player. I think SEC quarterbacks are the most tested and Alabama has a completely different coaching staff now than it did when Brokie was there. Also, John Parker Wilson hasn’t had a severe injury and is so fast and mobile I don’t see him getting knocked up the way Croyle does. Just an idea though. Personally I like Huard through 2009. I think getting a top QB beyond the Matt Ryan type is so hard to predict that you are better off developing 2 later round prospects at once to see which one pays off.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:48 amSudden, I like that term, too, but I’m just a little uneasy about adopting anything from Woody Paige.
September 29th, 2008 at 12:33 pmSteven, right on on both of the Johnsons. Somehow, I don’t have Johnson on any of my fantasy teams. Either drafted too early or too late
September 29th, 2008 at 12:48 pmDouble D, you are right on the money. Is Sam Bradford a junior this year? i was thinking he was just a soph. Cantwell has looked real good as well.
September 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pmCantwell scares me after seeing what has happened with Brohm, Double D, but great JPW line. He either sounds like that or some pretty boy TV actor.
September 29th, 2008 at 1:06 pmstevenh,
I believe you’re right about Bradford being a sophomore. Still, looks to me like the kid’s got some NFL chops.
September 29th, 2008 at 1:09 pmAdam,
Why compare Cantwell with Brohm? A lot of people were down on Brohm going into the draft, including me. Speaking of last year’s draft, remember my prediction about DeSean Jackson? Man, I wished the would have taken him . . . or Eddie Royal for that matter.
September 29th, 2008 at 1:16 pmYeah Chiefs…. Felt good this week. Let’s keep it up.
GO CHIEFS
September 29th, 2008 at 1:28 pmSome schools just scare me at certain positions. After the seasons Cassel, Leinart and Palmer are having, would you draft a USC QB right now? Louisville just worries me a bit after the Brohm debacle. Either he was a byproduct of Petrino, or Kragthorpe ruined him. The first would bode well for Cantwell, the second wouldn’t. He was impressive against KSU, though.
September 29th, 2008 at 1:39 pmI didn’t think we had much chance to win this game, but I made a lunch bet on the outcome. We won, my lunch is free! Thanks LJ and crew, now I don’t have to pay for someone else’s lunch and listen to that Denver Bronco crap. Go, Chiefs!
September 29th, 2008 at 1:47 pmChase Daniel Please Please Please…Seriously. Not sure where he’ll be projected by the time the season’s over but if we can land him in the 2nd/3rd then I would be ecstatic. Of course the way he’s playing maybe 1st round isn’t out of the question. Smart, accurate, patient, mobile, quick release..exactly what we don’t have right now. Yes size is the one drawback but I am VERY WILLING to take that risk. Upside is off the charts.
September 29th, 2008 at 1:48 pmChase Daniel?? Do I detect a little homerism afoot here? In addition to being short and only running the spread, Daniel enjoys a situation where he has all frikkin day to find an open receiver. Unless he wins Mizzou a national title, I doubt he’ll draft all that high much less pan out in the NFL. Seriously, how many games last year was he sacked more than twice last year? I’ll bet it wasn’t more than a couple and I could probably name those games.
Has he even been sacked once this year?
I say we wait to see how he does against a real honest to God pressure defense before we annoint him the next Tom Brady.
September 29th, 2008 at 2:49 pmOne of us has to post and put an end to this Chase Daniel madness before it gets out of hand. Seriously.
September 29th, 2008 at 3:44 pmEasy sport. Who’s annointing him the next Tom Brady? I’m not. Are you kidding? Chief’s have never even developed the next Chad Pennington. What I’m saying is there doesn’t appear to be any standouts at QB in the first five picks so do we reach or instead what a few rounds and take a flier on a smart QB? Key word…smart. One who can do all the things Croyle hasn’t been able to YET. Like not lock on just one receiver and actually have some field vision. He is very mobile and seems to know when to break out of the pocket and can throw on the run. He doesn’t turn the ball over. He’s accurate. He seems to have that natural leader aura. Short? Well ok, but see Drew Brees. That’s Chase. We’re not talking a Flutie midget. I just see football instinct in Chase.
I’m not a real homer. Yes I grew up in Missouri but I’ve lived on the West coast for 10 years and rarely get to see a mizzou game. But what I have seen I really like and I feel we could use our high draft picks for more O and D line help and draft a Daniel late for a low risk high reward. He has many of the intangibles that makeup a successfull NFL QB. And yes, ok, you got me. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to a bit of homerism. Maybe he’d even make Franklin a good #2 with the rapport!!
Oh yeah, might as well draft Maclin too.
September 29th, 2008 at 4:37 pmBrodie will without a doubt get the ball when he is ready. Huard did a nice job, but that is what your 2nd stringer is supposed to do. A good back-up should be able to maintain a .500 record for the games he is starting.
I think next year we will see Brodie, one veteran (may or may not be Huard), and one drafted QB. The final 11 games will definately determine how high of a pick they will spend on another QB. If Brodie can show us something this year, I think they will pick up another mid to late round guy. If he doesn’t, I think we could easily see a first round guy.
I personally hope Brodie kicks some ass. We will be sitting so much better going into the draft not having a glaring need at quarterback. I would love to be able to spend that pick elsewhere. I could be way off base…just my humble opinion.
September 29th, 2008 at 5:05 pmAs of today, I consider this to be a very weak QB class and I cannot see spending anything higher than a 3rd round pick for a QB in the 09 Draft. Btw, if you want to talk smarts, mobility, and accuracy then look no farther than Todd Reesing even though I highly doubt he’ll even consider an NFL career (2 years down the road that is). In terms of a raw prospect, I also like Josh Freeman too but I think he needs more time to develop before hitting the pros.
If we take a QB in next year’s draft, I say do it in round 3 or later otherwise bite the bullet and just wait a year or two when prospects for that position are better. I’ve pretty much given up on Brodie to the point where I hope we go after a FA or pick up somebody else’s 2nd/3rd stringer as a means of biding our time until a guy like Sam Bradford hits the draft.
Now if you want to talk Maclin, Coffman, or W. Moore as potential 1st/2nd rounders then yeah we can have a meaningful discussion about Mizzou draft prospects.
September 29th, 2008 at 5:06 pmI think they gotta play Brodie Croyle as soon as he’s healthy enough to play. I don’t think he gives them the best chance of winning, but put him out their so he continues to fail and we don’t have to hear his name mentioned again, and we can all just move on from this disaster. My concern is that if Huard goes out there and continues to play, the coaches are going to make excuses and try and bring back Croyle again next year, instead of really adressing the problem.
September 29th, 2008 at 5:08 pmFrom what I’ve seen, Croyle’s skills and level of performance has improved considerably over last season. It’s his lack of availability that’s become the issue for me. Put differently, I think he has the potential to be a great backup some day.
September 29th, 2008 at 5:17 pmHey, can’t you guys squeeze T.G. into the header. Every time I see that he’s not up there, I get a little sad. The guy is maybe the most consistent Chief ever. It doesn’t matter how bad the game is, or how good it is, Tony always does his job and does it well. Give the man some love. One of you wrote about making them earn their arrowhead, replace Dorsey with T.G. He’s played very well and will probably be great, but he hasn’t earned it. Put Tony where he belongs.
September 29th, 2008 at 6:09 pmTony is awesome. There are actually some guys on bobgretz.com right now that are cursing Tony for saying he was frustrated for not getting the extra 3 yards yesterday. Tony has earned his right to say when he is frustrated. I can’t believe how fast some people will turn on a guy.
September 29th, 2008 at 6:40 pmChase Daniel? I think he’s a little short, and I don’t know if he has the arm. And he’s got a lot of neck fat.
Welcome Dvon_pdx. Nice to have a Portlander in here, I lived there for about 3 years and loved it…considering moving back.
September 29th, 2008 at 11:55 pmDD, yeah, it’d be nice to have Royal or Jackson, but at the cost of Flowers? Would you make that move? We may have (depending on how they keep up over the course of this whole season,) our starting CB’s for the next decade. I probably wouldn’t give that up for a WR. Ty Law and co. showed us the importance of having a solid or better starting CB tandem. And Kennison and co. showed us that we could still be badass on offense without a big-name WR on the squad. I’m happy with the way that 2nd round turned out.
September 30th, 2008 at 1:42 pmxxxlp,
Call me crazy, I like big time playmakers.
