Loss #3 – Atlanta

AUTHOR: stevenh | IN: Features | COMMENTS: 16 Comments

Well, I’m going to go ahead and state the obvious here.

I didn’t think the defense would be this far behind.  Did you? I have to say I’m a little bit frustrated as a Chiefs fan having to watch the defense continually give up big plays to the opposing team in critical situations.  I was positive going into this year that the offense would struggle scoring points-and they have-but I thought the defense would have the ability to keep the Chiefs in some games.  So far, the defense is not doing well at all!

Tyler Thigpen didn’t look too awful during the last drive of the first half and the whole second half.  Was he Peyton Manning? No, please don’t get me wrong, but it appears that he “grew” a little.  I wonder if the Chiefs had won the past two games, even by 1 point in each, would the job be Brodie’s when he get’s healthy?  I don’t know the answer and I never really thought I would actually type this, but I really can’t wait for Brodie Croyle to get back.

Pat Thomas is worthless.  I said I was going to state the obvious and this might be the most obvious of all.  He continues to take bad angles and miss tackles way too much for mine or anybody else’s liking.  Maybe the Chiefs need to do something there.  Also, DJ has been pretty quiet these first three weeks.  I predicted he would be voted to his first pro bowl this year, the season is still relatively young but with each passing game with him not showing up lessens the chance of that happening.

Larry Johnson finally got off the schneid a little bit today, unfortunately it was too little too late.  If only the Chiefs could have got the running game on track a little sooner.

Ok, for all of those Chiefs fans still holding out hope that they can turn it around and still have a productive season you need to forget about it.  I’m sorry, no one is as hurt as yours truly.  After three weeks, this is the worst Chiefs team I have ever seen.  I know, it’s a bold statement, but all together, this team is the worst my eyes have been subjected to.   Can they improve?  Absolutely, but so far, they’ve shown no signs of righting the ship.

DRAFT WATCH

Watch this be the year be the year when there is no clear cut number one player available for this year’s draft.  I wouldn’t be surprised.  I think the Chiefs might want to look at middle linebacker when their time is up, whether it be at number one or not.  James Laurinaitis out of Ohio State or Rey Maualuga form Southern Cal, the Chiefs need to be strong up the middle, they drafted Dorsey this year, Page and Pollard appear to have improved, now the Chiefs need a Brian Urlacher-type presense in the middle.

It’s hard for the D to stay fresh when we had so many 3-n-outs. Sure, Thiggy looked ‘decent’ as I alluded to in a previous post.. but it came, like you said, at the END of the first half, and towards the end of the game. At that point, you’re gassed. Especially when facing a powerful/fast back in Turner, which we have seen firsthand from the other side of the spectrum, as we’ve watched LJ just stud his way through the 4th quarters of many a game. It happens. Once our O gets some rythm, you’ll be biting your words.

And yes, my hope is for Maualuga. I like Laurinitus, but I’ve heard NOTHING but good things from Rey. Especially hearing he’s a Singletary type of MLB. That’d be hella nice. We haven’t had a decent MLB since.. well Kawika was one, but previously.. remember Mike Maslowski? Sheiza, yes, the man who made his fame in NFL Europe was our last decent MLB, not counting Kawika. Stupentously improved secondary, D-line also got some talent injections this offseason, and the final piece of the puzzle is to add talent to the LB corps. We shall see what takes place. It looks like we’re pretty much going to get our pick of whoever we want, if we keep playing like we did in the first quarter.

  2. MasterBlaster says:

The Cup is half full, not half empty. Enough with the drama already haha.

    Look at it like this…

    1st Glenn Dorsey (looking good)
    1st Phat Albert (looking good)
    2nd Brandon Fowers (looking good)

and, as you know, the list goes on. We have a chunk of draft pick winners. Maybe 6 or 7 plus. Thats frickin unprecidented!

And quit freaking out about the terrible games. This is just a young team without a QB. It goes down like dominoes. It makes sense, but you cant separate a young defense from a young offense. The D is seeing the offense fail mightily, putting a ton of preasure on their shoulders. When a yound O gets down a yound D gets down. A lot of tallent playing under their potential. I guarantee that if you get a decent QB in, charging the offense, the D will “miraculously” turn around too.

I think there is a real possibility that a Quinn deal gets done. Why? There is only one thing that the Owner and GM love more than football…money. I guarantee you that the prospect of blackouts and empty seats are forcing the gears to turn in Clark and Carls head. I wouldnt be surprised if we traded our 1st and 2nd for Quinn in 09 just so those 2 can save some face this year. I would bun a 1st but a 2nd is wayyyy too much.

I would love to get Quinn. And it would be the right choice if we could pull the trigger with our first. But I hate giving up Maligula or Laurinitus. I think either of those players would nearly single handedly fix our linebacker problem. I bet DJ would even start to step up in that situation.

I dont know. Im keeping an eye on the Quinn thing.

  3. stevenh says:

I don’t know if I’m freaking out, I try not to. Like a wrote, I thought thd D would keep us in some games and a couple of balls going the Chiefs way would lead to a 6-10 record. Of course, I didn’t count on Brodie being hurt in the first game and now being out possibly 8 weeks. Oh well.

Brady Quinn would be a wonderful move, but I don’t think I’m as optimistic as you MasterBlater. Crennel said after the game yesterday that all position would be re-evaluated and perhaps some moves made. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Quinn starting for the Browns in the next week or two. I will keep my fingers crossed though.

  4. KCFaninATL says:

Here is my problem if anyone cares.
Thigpen is god awful quarterback, a disgrace. But the problem for me is that the coaching staff and office think he should be on this team. You can’t blame Thiggy for trying and collecting the paycheck every week. You can blame him for staring down his receiver every play and the 3 picks though.
And you can blame the higher-ups who want him on the field.
Granted, he did doo better his second half, but what was the reasoning for keeping him in there after halftime?
What was he, 5 of 15 with 2 picks and a TD? Does Herm not consider that a “struggle”? Are you kidding me?

And anyone who thinks Herm is doing the right thing by “evaluating” him is an idiot. Thats what preseason is for.
I’m not looking for the playoffs here, but could the coaches and staff on this team look like they are trying to make an effort and putting a legitimate winning team on the field once?
    Please.

Oh, and the dome was alive yesterday. I kept getting smaller and smaller in my seat surrounded by all those falcons fans. It was rough.

And then after the game seeing all the other Chiefs fans there was nothing to say. We could just see each other and shake our heads.

    This is ridicules.

  5. Crane says:

As long as the Chiefs aren’t as bad as your spelling we won’t hit rock bottom.

  6. ROC27 says:

Hopefully (and I put emphasis on ‘hopefully), Herm, Chan, and the rest of the coaching staff realize that they need LJ. They need to run the ball. I get that Herm wants to know what he has in Tyler Thigpen… now we know. BUT its our running game that needs to get going. We have no run, we have no pass, we have no scores. LJ is the f’n man. He actually knows whats he’s saying when he says that he needs to touch the ball 20 to 30 times a game. And I think he proved it yesterday. Larry Johnson, D-Bowe, and TG are our playmakers. THEY are the only people who give us a chance to win. We need to get them the ball…ESPECIALLY LJ and EARLY!

  7. doc says:

When I was watching the game yesterday I kept thinking, man LJ looks really, really slow. Did anyone else notice this? Do you think its just because of the poor OLine?

  8. lobo48 says:

Even before the game LJ was on the bench looking like his dog just got run over. I still think he hates being pulled out on all the third down plays and I believe it is a mistake to do so. I can see subbing in once in a while but Larry just gets some momentum going and has to come out. He has always liked 25 plus carries every game and seems to get better in the fourth quarter. At least we did some different things with him this game and he looked a little like his former self.

I don’t see the Brady Quinn trade happening even if it would be interesting. I hope we keep our first round pick for Maualuga. He looks like a beast and thats what we need in the middle so our outsides can live up to their potential

Secondary is coming along as well as can be expected and d-line is improving too. I agree linebackers is our weak spot right now.

We wil have to pick it up some to be 1-4 going into the bye week and thats not as good as I thought we would be before the season started. But who knew(besides Adam) that our qb would go down in the first game. Thigpen might be a decent backup in a few years but I hate to see him starting for us. He is NOT a qb to build a team with.

  9. Double D says:

I seemed to me that most of LJ’s yardage yesterday came from runs to the outside. My question is, why did it take so long to figure this out?

  10. SinyGuy says:

I agree …should not have taken so long to run him to the outsides. Was extremely happy to see us not run 8 consecutive plays up the middle for a yard or two.

Yes, LJ did look slow to me as well, but damn..Charles is so fast and I think he makes many of backs look slow.

Our problem from what I witnessed as I turned my CHIEFS flag upside down (distress) was again pretty poor play calling on both sides of the ball. What the hell happened to GUN? I think I saw one blitz which was early in the first quarter. Anytime you have a rookie QB you should bring some heat but we insisted on giving him plenty of time.

Secondly…we just don’t have a QB PERIOD! None of the guys we have on our roster are going to amount to squat! Huard gives us our best chance but he will be on his back most of the time, but gotta at the least love his accuracy compared to either Croyle or Thiggy.

If these are the QB’s we are going to keep and I hate to say it, but keep Thiggy in there to gain some confidence and make the most of it. Another throw in with Huard or when Croyle gets back is not going to do anyone on O any good. Thus far it appears ONE major upside for Thiggy is that he can at least stay in for a full game and to me that is a major upside!

    GO chiefs????

  11. Howlin Wolf says:

We are a woeful excuse for a football team and I’m sure I’m not the only one losing the will to live. I think we can safely decree that this is Herm’s last season, and if baby Hunt has any balls, it’ll be Carl’s too, given the amount of talent we’ve allowed to walk out the door in recent times. Brady Quinn might be a nice little project to have on board, but seriously, 2 1st and 2nd rounders? I think for that we’d be able to pick up something a bit more ready to wear. Hopefully during the draft we can get a QB worthy of being a 1st round pick and either of the two MLB’s mentioned here would be nice. I’d like to see a future post on players coming off contract at the seasons end that could fill some of the gaps either side of the ball.

  12. JASON says:

lj and the toss should go hand in hand, he got the toss lots from dv and always popped. now we hand him the ball to run up niswanger’s ass,(no wonder he played so bad yesterday he felt a little “used”) once we started the toss he had maybe only one loss, and most went for 5+, also the drive to the 5 why the HELL did we pull lj and put in charles when lj obviously was owning them on that drive? then we get to 3rd(or maybe 4th) put lj in and he gets us to the 1 inch line STOOPID AGAIN

  13. MasterBlaster says:

The Browns might be singing a different tune come December. We will have to see how this all plays out.

Keep this in mind. The first pick is worth 3000 points. The Browns burned 1350 points to get Quinn.

Also. If the browns pick in the middle (around 16). Their positions of need are going to be gone around 10-12. Go check (Walter football 2009 draft)(I dont feel like typing the details out)

    My wishlist still stands

    1st Malegula/Laurinitis
    2nd Alex Mack
3rd ?(ill know better in december)

    and

we should burn our 1st for Quinn…nothing more

or, we should burn our third, and possibly a late round pick, for Brohm from GB. How much is a GB 3rd srtinger worth anyways?

Thats where I stand right now

2 1st’s and 2 2nd’s is just frickin rediculous (if true). Rebuilding the entire team is still more important, right now, than even the QB position. We should not burn more than a single top pick for a QB.

Oh, and im curious, with all the trading we did last season…is there a chance we could get a 3rd rounder compensatory pick next year? I know the formula for that is secret and works something like Quantum Physics. Any ideas?

  14. ComeSackMyQB says:

boy Connor Barth is looking good right now.

  15. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

A couple of interesting things transpired on Sunday which I think bear mentioning. We all know the Chiefs stunk up the place on Sunday, but I found it interesting that the play calling actually improved somewhat. Although the Chiefs desperate attempt to generate some offense was way too little, way too late, they did actually try. Does this mean an epiphany has taken place in the previously totally idiotic coaching staff? Possibly. We shall see. Secondly New England got beat by Miami. Miami defeated New England by using OFFENSE. Many supporters of HermBall on this blog and others have stoutly maintained that could not be done. A big fat raspberry to any and all who have condemned the use of offense to win games. So much for the ultra-conservative approach to winning games against New England.

  16. blue says:

There is NO WAY we should even consider a 1st rounder for Brady Quinn. A franchise MLB is what we need, and it looks like we’ll have our choice of 2. We still don’t know about Croyle, but even if we don’t by the end of the season, it doesn’t look like a franchise QB is out there, but a franchise MLB is and should be taken. Truthfully, with Curl and Herm “Coaching” a young QB, I’m not sure any can succeed here, until at least Curl is gone and a Competant QB Coach(like Terry Shea was BEFORE Herm axed him for his incompetant buddy) is fully put in charge of the position.
