A.A.D.Q.: A Smorgasbord Of First-Day Picks?

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: AADQ | COMMENTS: 71 Comments

This Old Chief just called me up and told me that he heard on the radio this morning that the Browns asked the Chiefs for two first-rounders and two second-rounders in exchange for Brady Quinn. Thanks, but no thanks. I actually like Brady Quinn, but not for any price steeper than one first and a second-day pick.

What does everybody else think about this rumor? Would you have pulled the trigger on this deal?

ROC, I’ll be making my annual pilgrimage from LA down to SD this year for the game as well. Where you sitting? I’ll 12 rows up from our bench wearing my DJ jersey. Btw, I love how last year we had the national anthem ending the way its supposed to down there.

If we’re gonna talk about retreads, why not discuss Alex Smith? Free agent next summer, he’s gonna come cheap.

  3. randy5k says:

If he heals properly that shoulder bone is scary.

  4. 6. Herm Edwards, Kansas City — The Chiefs are on a franchise-worst 11-game losing streak, and things have gotten so bad these days that they’re losing to the Raiders by 15 points. At home. With Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell completing all of six passes. In fact, with reports swirling that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin would be fired after Sunday’s game, and then that not being the case, it now appears that losing to the Chiefs has become grounds for dismissal. Quick, somebody tell rookie Falcons head coach Mike Smith it’s win or else this week at home against K.C.

They might have had a great 2008 draft, but I look for the Chiefs to battle it out all season with the Rams (nice football state, Missouri) and maybe the Bengals for the distinction of being the NFL’s worst team. They’ve got no quarterbacking, a disgruntled and unreliable lead running back in Larry “Me-first” Johnson, and the look of a team that’s in the deepest darkest stages of a years-long rebuilding program.

Edwards’ fate is pretty clearly tied to the question of whether team owner Clark Hunt finally ends the tenure of long-time Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson, who has served in his capacity 20 seasons without delivering even a Super Bowl appearance. For that matter, Kansas City hasn’t won a playoff game since 1993. If “King Carl” survives yet again, so will Edwards. But if Hunt pulls the plug on Peterson, the new GM customarily gets to hire a head coach of his choosing. And that could end Edwards’ three-year K.C. tenure.

Nothing wrong with trying to develop a young qb but for GODS sake have a veteran too. And not a shell shocked one like Huard.

  6. randy5k says:

well the Chargers are walking all over the jets so maybe a qb isnt everything

The Bills had Lynch, Evans, and TE’s who are not even close to comparable with Tony G. I think Losman would relish having a chance to come here. Hell I’d even give a 2nd rounder for him if that’s the ultimate price to pay. To know we actually have a QB, not a QB-pretender (or a constantly broken QB, which is sad to say, I liked Brodie.. kind of.) Damon just isn’t going to hack it. We may keep him next year as an insurance policy for Losman (should this trade go through) but realistically he’s done after that.

Hell, if we want, I’d even be fine with waiting until after the season until Losman is a free agent, signing him to a 2-3 year deal, drafting a lineman high, and then trading up for a MLB (Maualuga, hopefully,) and then giving Losman the offseason to get acclimated with our vocabulary and offensive schemes. When teams can’t key up on the run EVERY play (Losman had plenty of deep balls thrown, when he played,) LJ should get going. If LJ is going, playaction is also going, and it’s a win/win situation. With more experience to our younger guys in JamChar, Cottam (yikes, the Brodie Croyle of tight ends, who also has the same initials, BC. Just say no to BC!) an even more-improved line, and hopefully better coaching.. Our O will look totally different. As long as it isn’t diagnosed with Chancer.

A 2nd rounder is one thing, but I think we could get him for a 3rd this year, and maybe a 5th or so in 2010. That’s a cheap price to pay for a QB who played well with LESSER weapons in Bufallo. The Bills have certainly embraced Trent Edwards, and with him coming along nicely, and their team doing really well this year, they might be willing to part with Losman cheaper than we think, and turn around and use one of those picks on a new QB to stick on the depth chart. It’s worth thinking about, anyway.

  8. randy5k says:

Ok lets get JP very good thoughts X

  9. Sudden says:

What is this BS about selecting an O-Lineman early? We have our franchise LT. You don’t select a RT or an interior lineman with a first round pick, let alone a top 5 pick. And no, don’t trade for a guy who is a UFA in the offseason. Wait until the offseason. If we’re making a trade for a QB of all positions, I at least want to have him around for a couple of seasons.

  10. ComeSackMyQB says:

If they would try a lil change for once, put the Gonj and B Rich on the right side we may already have an answer to our line problem. Obviously Herm doesnt support Obama’s idea for change.

  11. randy5k says:

The last time I saw Carl P in person was at last years Oakland home game and he got boo’d off the fleld. Pretty bad when the GM cant show his face at a home game without getting drilled by D-Cells.

  12. randy5k says:

Whats sad is follow some of the news from Oakland, those fans are ready to drink the kool aid and they stomped a mud hole in OUR BUTTS!!

  13. Crane says:

Regarding my comments about the Browns, I said I consider most of them busts. Joe Thomas is not a bust, lets not put him in the HOF just yet tho bc the Browns running game is horrid. I was mostly trying to illustrate how the Chiefs and Browns are similar in thier ineptitude and KC had a team from 96-99 …Cleveland did not!

    YEAR Rd. NAME
1999 1 Tim Couch QB Kentucky BUST
2000 1 Courtney Brown DE Penn State BUST
2001 3 Gerard Warren DT Florida A few goodyears BUST
2002 16 William Green RB Boston C. BUST
2003 21 Jeff Faine C Notre Dame NEW TEAM
2004 6 Kellen Winslow II TE GOOD WHEN NOT INJURED
2005 3 Braylon Edwards WR Michigan DITTO
2006 13 Kamerion Wimbley LB Fl.State Some promise
2007 3 Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin OK OK
2007 22 Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame ?

  14. Crane says:

If Brodie Croyle is bud light, Losman is Budweiser. A little more experience, big arm big hair and no game.

  15. ComeSackMyQB says:

Whats the chance we could get Brohm?

  16. ComeSackMyQB says:

right now he’s sitting behind Rogers and Flynn. Surely it wouldnt take alot to pick up their 3rd stringer.

  17. randy5k says:

    get him AND another

  18. Adam says:

I think him being a FA is exactly the reason to bring in Losman. The Bills would rather take like a fourth- or fifth-rounder than be stuck with nada. Trent Edwards is their guy. Meanwhile, we’d have a legitimate prospect on our roster and a leg up on signing him if he worked out. If we didn’t see enough to warrant keeping him, then we’d let him go. We wouldn’t have to splurge on a high-draft pick or even a decent contract on him, that is unless he played his way to a payday. Make sense?

  19. randy5k says:

    Yes it does

  20. IISaiNtII says:

JT O’Sullivan will be UFA next year too.

  21. lobo48 says:

But J.T. will get a new contract since he replaced their starter.
I will also jump on the Losman wagon. He may not be the qb of the future here but he could be the qb for right now; and who knows he may just turn out great. At this point we are getting pretty desperate. We can’t suffer through a full season of Thiggy
