Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are championship teams or quality offensive lines. As a longstanding Chiefs fan, I have suffered through many lean years with the likes of Paul Wiggins, Crash Ganz, John Mackovic and Gunther Cunningham. First-round busts like Woody Green, Elmore Stephens, Todd Blackledge and, yes, Trezelle Jenkins.
Yesterday was a complete disaster with even our MVP punter getting off a rare 17-yarder. But before we rebuild we must realize how we got here. First, by letting a veteran team get old and letting valuable commodities such as John Tait become free agents. Secondly, our failure to develop a young franchise quarterback, or even to plan for the inevitable end of Trent Green‘s career. Poor drafts also attributed to this mess, the hallmark of these is using the number six pick on Ryan Sims. So culpability must be held by the front office, the talent scouts, the GM and the last three coaching staffs.
Frankly, the Chiefs are talent poor and have joined Detroit, Miami, St. Louis and Cincinnati as the dregs of the NFL. One talent-rich draft loaded with potential will not fix this program. And, yes, I agree that the game plan was poorly conceived. MU did a better job on McFadden in the Cotton Bowl, but the team is young–a bad mix of rookies and aging veterans. An example was Brandon Carr effectively screening Donnie Edwards on McFadden’s long run around the right in the third quarter.
Let’s hope that the coaching staff can keep the young players focused, and that the scouting staff can accurately address the glaring needs at QB and the right side of the offensive line.
Peace and patience be with you–we’ll all need it.
