The Chiefs' Quarterback Crisis

by Draft

First off, I’d like to apologize for getting this out late today. I wanted to spend a bit more time with this piece and I also wanted to give AA’s newest writer (the elder Best) the opportunity to have his first post stick around at the top for as long as possible.

That being said, I’m here now, and I’m ready to roll with my take on the Chiefs issues at the quarterback position and why I think they’re making a mistake by entrusting the future of this franchise to Brodie Croyle.

I’ll preface my thoughts with a quick statement on Croyle and why I truly like him as a person/player on the team – Croyle is a team player through and through, and while his durability is certainly an issue of major importance, his desire to succeed is not. No one will ever accuse Croyle of being too soft emotionally to handle the rigors of playing the QB position in the NFL, and he is a class act both on and off the field.

But all that aside, his detractors will rightfully question his physical ability to handle the kind of routine beating he’s going to take as the starting QB of the Chiefs, especially after watching him go down yet again in the first game of this season. He has never been a durable player at any level, suffering multiple injuries throughout his career that have derailed his individual accomplishments and his team’s chances of post-season success.

It is true that injuries cannot be predicted and therefore cannot be used as the sole qualification for determining how well a player will perform on any given Sunday, but that being said, when a player who has all the talent in the world ends up on the injury report on a semi-routine basis, it should give the franchise and fans cause for major concern. Croyle is a perfect example of that, and while many are calling for his immediate benching regardless of how long he’s out of commission, I’m not one of them, as I still think he gives us the best chance at winning – especially when you take a look at the rest of our QBs and see Tyler Thigpen, Damon Huard, and now Ingle Martin staring back at you.

Nevertheless, I have come to the conclusion that Croyle is just one of those guys that will never live up to his potential for the Chiefs, because of his inability to stay on the field and off the injury report. I hate to say it and I promise I will gladly eat my words if he comes back to play at a fairly high level this season, but it’s time for the Chiefs to begin making contingency plans for acquiring a quarterback via the draft or free agency that will be able to come in and consistently perform at a high level without getting injured.

That QB could come in any form, as long as they have demonstrated an ability to effectively lead a professional offense and stay healthy at the same time. It would obviously be preferable to get a QB that is relatively young considering the Chiefs current youth movement, but if they continue to put all of the other pieces in place, there is no reason why they should not pursue a veteran signal caller, who could thrust this team over the proverbial hump and into the playoffs.

The long term success of this franchise will be measured in large part by the Chiefs decisions in the coming days, weeks, and months of this season with regard to their future plans at the quarterback position.

If they choose wisely and develop a quality plan to acquire a proven talent that has demonstrated an ability to lead his offense without suffering a litany of injuries, then I think the Chiefs current rebuilding strategy will inevitably be judged to be a successful one. On the flip side, if they choose to continue down this path of sticking by Croyle to the end, with no apparent alternative available should he falter or get hurt once again, then I think they will be viewed in a negative light no matter the success of the rest of the team in the near future.

Like I said before, I really like Brodie Croyle and hope that he will prove me wrong in the near future by getting back on the field and staying healthy while putting up consistently strong numbers for a Chiefs offense that is capable of hanging tough against good defenses. But as of right now, his future with the team is definitely in doubt and I am hopeful that the Chiefs make a sound decision by bringing in a legitimate quarterback to provide insurance for the team should Croyle fail to deliver once again.

This is not the time to quibble over supposed quarterback controversies; we need solid leadership in the huddle to direct our young and talented corps of players towards a bright and shining future.

Brodie Croyle is running out of opportunities to be that player, and by continuing to pretend that he’s the team’s only option in the future, the Chiefs are essentially sacrificing their long-term success to prove a point about their ability to draft a quality quarterback. And that is a mistake that neither Herm nor Carl will survive to explain should it materialize in the near future.

Sorry spyke, but I think Woodson is not going anywhere anytime soon in this league. He's a pretty decent player, but that delivery of his causes him to make way too many mistakes for my liking.

He had a chance in New York and did very little with it. I think we'll pass...pun most definitely intended

Great comments from you as well Adam! I agree totally with everything you just said.

I agree that stubbornness on Croyle could cost both Carl and Herm their jobs. I think we'll draft a QB next year, however, even if Brodie comes back, just as a safety net for our rebuilding phase.

As for Brodie giving us the best chance to win, I only half agree. He gives us the best chance to win long-term, as in down the road. I just think Damon is a little better right now. That being said, I think that developing our team for the future is more important than this year's box scores, so I agree that you play Croyle if he's healthy.

On the other hand, it's good to see we are at least looking at other quarterbacks. Before it was like they wouldn't even consider Brodie not becoming the man, be it for health or any other reason. Now, I believe they are reevaluating things.

Well written, as always, Chris.

Voices of calm and reason on the QB situation. Finally!

Dakotadave congrats on your first comment.. believe me, it's an addiction you'll be hard pressed to break!

I completely agree with your comment and while I think that Huard presents a decent backup solution for this season and this season only, Croyle or another young QB represents the future of this franchise. I like what Ingle Martin brings to the table, but I'd be very surprised if he gets any playing time this season with the way things are looking right now.

What I would like to see is Croyle staying healthy for the majority of a season before I make my decision on his future with the Chiefs. If he can't do that, then it's time for us to move on and find someone else before our window of opportunity with our young and talented team runs out.

Normally I just read the posts, but this one is driving me nuts, so I thaught I would leave my first comment. Sandya, Damon Huard is what he is...a capable back-up quarterback in the NFL. He will never be any better than he is right now. Brodie Croyle, (as fragile as he may be) has a very high ceiling, and will almost without a doubt continue to develop. If you don't see his progression from last year at this time, your just not watching. That being said, it is time to consider alternate plans, they just have to at this point. If we are striving to be a mediocre football team, then Huard is our man. Otherwise we have to put Croyle back in as soon as he is ready, and watch him grow.

Wow, that felt kind of good. I'm going to have to do this more often.

Saskwatch, this was actually Chris :)

I hope that most of this article isn't true. They are talking about Thigpen getting significant playing time while Croyle is out.

I agree with Adam. I also feel we have a better chance to win with Croyle. How many wins did Huard get last year after Larry Jonson was hurt (don't look it up it is the same number of wins as croyle). Huard manages the game okay and can throw fairly effectively when there is 8 or 9 men in the box to stop the run. He is smart, but he has severe physical limitations. I tell you why Huard is more durable than Croyle. Croyle stares down the gunbarrel to the end trying to make a play. Huard lives by the rule " one, two, lay down before they hit you."

Sandya,

Yes Damon Huard has won games for us before. But he's also older than dirt, completely immobile, and has been a career backup QB for many other reasons that I don't have time to discuss here.

So my opinion still stands - when Croyle is healthy and on the field for the duration of the game he gives us the best chance of winning because he has the talent to succeed at this level. Croyle's problem is that he never can stay healthy which is why I have a serious problem with the Chiefs deciding to rest the future of the franchise on his injury-prone shoulders.

im like what snead101 wrote. cower was a chiefs coach at one point in his career i think he would love to come back to arrowhead. draft a qb in the first round and BAM problems solved...yeah right!

How do you argue against the simple truth? Regardless of your opinion of what he can become, the statistics don't lie, and purely looking at statistics and the past, Huard gives us the best chance to win a game...By the way Croyle has like 6 touchdown passes in 7 games..

"I still think he gives us the best chance at winning - especially when you take a look at the rest of our QBs and see Tyler Thigpen, Damon Huard, and now Ingle Martin staring back at you."

Regardless of your opinion, the FACT of right now is that Huard gives us the best chance to win..Do you disagree? Okay then let me know how many career wins Brodie Croyle has? Last time I checked it was zero..Huard is probably sitting right at .500

So that would mean Huard gives us the best chance to win..Like I said you can't make that comment about Croyle giving us the best chance to win, when he hasn't won anything yet..Sevy?

Croyle is NOT the future of the Chiefs. I'm very happy Herm and Carl are putting so much into this guy though, as it will be the end of their reign, and a new bright future for the Chiefs will be imminent. Bill Cowher, I can hear the hunt's offering a huge contract next year, and drafting the #1 quarterback. Along with all our other rookies, new quarterback, and good coach, the Chiefs will be in immediate contention.
