Rattay, Simms Headed To K.C.

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: 27 Comments

From BobGretz.com:

NFL veteran quarterbacks Chris Simms and Tim Rattay are headed to Kansas City Monday evening and expected to workout for the Chiefs sometime on Tuesday…

Both Simms and Rattay were rumored to be at the top of the list in New England for the Patriots to step onto their roster for the injured Tom Brady.  But Chiefs sources say both quarterbacks left Foxboro without being offered a deal.  It sounds like the Patriots must have something else working behind the scenes.

Let’s go, Chiefs. We’ve got to sign Simms here. Rattay is 31 with limited upside. It’s not rocket science.

We can’t pass up Simms. He’s 28 years old – he knows what it takes to be a starter in the NFL – he has shown, when he was healthy that de had the talent – he’s tough (he played through a burst spleen for christs sake) – and he gives us the best chance to win games over the next 2-3 years.
Look – if the Chiefs want to draft their next starting quarterback to build a franchise around, that’s fine with me…but you have to give all the young guys on the team a reason to grow towards excellence. They’ll never achieve excellence with a wishy-washy quarterback. Draft your next franchise quarterback in 2009, fine….but you need a stop-gap and Chris Simms is it. Plus, he has the upside of possibly turning into that franchise quarterback you’re looking for.

  2. Adam says:

    Well said, camucr! Totally agree.

  3. Chris Kolb says:

I couldn’t agree more with the sentiments on signing Chris Simms. The kid has the genes, intelligence, and physical makeup (minus his missing spleen) to be a successful QB in this league, and every time he’s actually been on the field, he’s shown all of that and more.

If anything, he’ll give the Chiefs a solid option to turn too, if Damon “Old Man River” HUard starts playing like crap, which we all know is going to happen sooner rather than later.

  4. Double D says:

I totally agree we should need to pull the trigger on Simms. Neither Huard nor Thiglet are long term solutions as either backup or starting responsibilities. Dump Thiglet. Just do it, please!

  5. Epic23 says:

I agree as well… its time to make a move, shake things up…maybe it would even prompt croyle to STEP HIS GAME UP!!!

  6. ok chiefs fans answer me this…ok we sign sims how long until he starts..huard should start week 2 i beleive by the time he is educated with chans offense to play brodie will be back so wat do the chiefs do play sims whos been there 3-4 weeks or put brodie in?? after the trent injury although huard played very good he went with green why?? cause he is the quaterback…

    GO CHIEFS!!

  7. Double D says:

KCchiefs56 – because Simms is an overall better option at backup than either Thiglet or Huard.

  8. i totally agree with that…but wat about when brodie is healthy again for the time being but u gotta believe that he will play croyle cause that is his quaterback

  9. Double D says:

I guess I am among the few that is okay with that. We must develop a QB and I say Brodie Croyle is our only real option for that happening in the short term. Injuries are a part of football. Live with it – that’s what all teams have to do from time to time, just like the Patriots are having to do right now. You don’t throw in the towel when you’re starting QB gets hurt and blame him for not being durable, you make do with the best you have until your starter returns. And if, in the meantime, your backup wins the starting job then oh well!! Same way Brady got his chance!

  10. KCMizzou says:

Let Croyle and Simms battle it out. Whoever is better gets the nod. Release Thigpen. At the end of the season you release Thingpen. Then, you draft a quarterback. Next year you go into the season with Simms (yes that means I think Simms wins the Brokie vs. Simms battle) as your starter. Let Brokie and Draftee battle it out for the second spot.

  11. KCMizzou says:

I meant at the end of the season you release Huard.

  12. Epic23 says:

If the Chiefs win the 2 games Croyle is out, what does Herm do?

1-1 or 0-2 I say Croyle is back in at QB.. 2-0 i say we keep playing Huard or whoever is behind center.

  13. KCMizzou says:

If Huard goes 2-0, Croyle still needs to be the starter. Yes, I THINK Croyle is Brokie, but I’ll give him one more gas ONLY because I want the Chiefs to be ABSOLUTELY sure they have to draft a QB. We could all agree that Brokie isn’t the answer, but I GUARANTEE you the Chiefs organization isn’t convinced yet.

  14. camucr says:

without simms this is the reality: if croyle comes back and sucks or is reinjured, huard finishes the season. we have NO option but to draft – thigpen won’t ever make it as a starter.

with simms this is the reality:. if croyle comes back and sucks or he is reinjured, simms finishes the season. see how simms performs the rest of the season. you might have a future quarterback in simms (unlike Huard). if simms sucks, draft as necessary.

at least with the second option we have a chance at a long term solution.

  15. Adam says:

Exactly, camucr. Man, I’ve been trying to say that forever and people always think it’s me attacking Croyle and/or Huard. It’s just what needs top happen given our situation.

  16. KCMizzou says:

Yeah, I hope nobody get me wrong, but I ABSOLUTELY want Brodie to be successful.

  17. ComeSackMyQB says:

This I have agreed with you on all along Adam, I believe Simms could be the answer, if not at least we are trying. We have nothing to lose. And alot to gain.

  18. ComeSackMyQB says:

The thing about it is Brodie will have REAL competition so if he wants to show us something he would have to do it NOW.

  19. xxxlp says:

Simms has only played in 19 games in 6 years. Do the math, and it ain’t pretty. Even given that he missed a year for his spleen deal, it’s still not convincing. His stats aren’t too terrible, especially the 59.1% completion percentage, but if you look at all of his stats, it’s just not convincing. 12 touchdowns to 17 picks? 9 fumbles? This guy is basically a left-handed Brodie. He HAS missed games, regardless of the circumstances (Brodie has too.) He throws more picks than TD’s (Brodie has too.) He has a tendency to fumble (Brodie has shown that, too!) See where I’m going with this? Brodie is at least younger than Simms. Stay with me here.

Brodie has played in the league 3 years, half the time of Simms. He has 4 fumbles to Simms’ 9. He has 6 TD’s to Simms’ 12. He has 8 picks to Simms’ 17. They both have a TD percentage of 2.4%. Brodie actually has a better interception percentage at 3.2%. He has just about half the yards, nearly the same completion percentage, and alot of Simms’ yards came on HUGE plays from Galloway. If we had a guy who could stretch the field like he can/could, I don’t doubt Brodie could hit him with that rifle arm. Brodie Croyle’s longest pass is 35 yards. Our line hasn’t been able to block long enough for any of our ’slow pokes’ to get downfield. That is changing around here, as our line is getting better, and we bring in faster guys like Franklin, have guys who can get YAC like Bowe/TG/JC/LJ, and Brodie is more comfortable with the system he’s been thrust in. Let’s not forget that we have a new offensive coordinator. It’s not exactly a smooth transition every time we go from one offensive way of life to another. Give the dude some time. You’re willing to suffer with DVD, you’re willing to take a chance on Dorsey, stick with Brodie.

Just take a look at the stats, and realize that Simms is basically a Brodie Croyle but with pedigree. It doesn’t make him any better, but it certainly makes him a ‘big name’ kind of guy. He’s not better than Brodie. The only category I’d give a win to Simms rather than Brodie is durability, and that’s only a slight nod, due to him missing a ton of games as well. You don’t play 19 games in 6 years and everyone thinks you’re durable. Oh wait, I guess we do.

  20. Adam says:

Well, Simms was better and healthier than Simms in both high school and college. He has also won in the NFL. He was also on an offense with less talent, and was jerked around by Jon “Man of 1,000 QBs” Gruden.

I prefer Simms to Huard. Even if he and Croyle are about the same, I like our odds better with both instead of just one.

  21. xxxlp says:

To think he can come in and start in the next two weeks is ludicrous though. If we sign him for competition for Brodie heading into next year, fine. But if we all think he’s going to be the starter the same week he signs, that’s plain dumb. For one, we have no lefties on our squad at the moment. I watched a documentary on left handed QB’s in college, and it’s just not the same as righties. WR’s especially are the ones who are affected by that, as the ball spins the opposite way, and usually comes from a different angle than a righty would have. That, coupled with the fact it’s a new system for him, new guys, and he hasn’t played in a meaningful game in awhile, make him a prime candidate to SUCK ASS should we decide to give him a trial by fire. I still don’t think he’s anything special, basically an older Brodie, and noone seems to like Brodie. The stats are actually eerily similar to eachothers. I was kinda freaked out :o

  22. camucr says:

    agreed.

  23. JASON says:

simms missed most of 2 years thats why his starts dont look right. the problem with simms is that hes a lefty, what about the oline? we have NO RT right now who would we play at rt? mac cant cut it but the team refuses to put someone else in

  24. Rihavens says:

Why is everyone so high on Simms? He does not look so great on stats. Is it that he is the best option?

  25. MasterBlaster says:

Lets cut a deal with GB for Brohm

  26. TheKansagonian says:

If we can’t get Simms signed, rather than the older Rattay, we should consider regurgitating the career of the infamous Joey Harrington, he can move, (too much @ times given) he is similar to Brodie in style but taller, AND his career numbers are surprisingly almost identical to Simms. A plus… he is a former great all american- Duck!

  27. baddawgy says:

Are you serious??? Look at their stats. It looks like you are saying “Simms” because of his name, not his ability.

    Simms Rating: 71.2
    Rattay Rating: 81.9

These stats are just the big picture…look at everything. I’ve actually watched Rattay play and the guy actually has an amazing head for the game…rather than a great dad that played the game. We’re talking about our team here, not getting our team more press.

Just my $.02…I may be delusional…who knows?
