Chiefs' Interest In Simms Confirmed
Adam Schefter is reporting that the Chiefs have contacted Chris Simms. Thanks to Bannyc9 for the heads up on this one. From NFL.com:
Meanwhile, free-agent quarterback Chris Simms is scheduled to arrive in New England Monday morning for a workout and a physical, Schefter reports. If all goes well, Simms could be a Patriot by the end of the day. Kansas City and Tennessee, each of whom had quarterbacks suffer significant injuries on Sunday, also have contacted Simms.
One would think Kansas City would be Simms’ best chance for locking up a long-term starting job, but is it? Think about it…if he goes to New England and puts together a helluva season with all those weapons they have, he’d suddenly be a hot commodity heading into next offseason. On the other hand, maybe he’s looking for a longer deal and guaranteed money. We might be his best option if that is the case. It’s getting very interesting…

His best shot at starting long term would be in K.C. where Croyle is yet to prove himself and can’t stay healthy. I would expect Croyle to take over again when he comes back from the injury, but going into next offseason if Croyle hasn’t done better than what hes done so far and Simms plays decent, he would have a shot at battling for the starting job.
The QB situation in New England and Tennesee is pretty much assuring himself of a bench job. Not sure how he would improve his stock going to New England and sitting on the bench behind Kassel.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:41 pmalthough that is true!! wat do yall think his chances of leavin foxboro tomorrow without a contract??
GO CHIEFS!!!
September 7th, 2008 at 11:43 pmTim Rattay is also working out for NE, so decent.
And I’m not so sure they’re going to go with Cassel, but maybe the will. If he dropped a couple, I bet they’d give him the hook.
September 7th, 2008 at 11:49 pmThat’s what I’m talking about about the too many posts thing. We just had the game today, we can update on the Brady thing etc. during the week when nothing else is really going on. Instead of we get bombarded and have to sift through the home page and scroll around for posts that we haven’t read.
I’d still argue for Quinn Gray (I don’t know if he’s signed with anyone) or Daunte Culpepper. More so Gray. He’s extremely mobile, Chan has been around guys like that quite a bit in his career, with most notably Slash, but also collegiate stars as well. You can do alot more things with a mobile QB. He threw for ~1k yards in the pre-season this year. For four games, splitting time with Sorgi and Lorenzon, I’d say that’s not too shabby. And his TD/INT ratio wasn’t too shabby either. A definite commodity over Thigpen. Jesus God if Thigpen loses us the game versus the Raiders.. /cry.
Dreamin’ about Simms is all fine and dandy, but the dude’s a southpaw, right? Unless you’re happy with McIntosh being the ‘LT’ for him, or you’d want to compromise the continuity on our O-line for him, I doubt it’ll be a long term answer. Albert played RG, and we moved him to LT, if we get Simms, if he gonna move to RT to effectively be the ‘LT’? Seriously, he’s a rookie, and he’s been hurt, we yank him around to 3 different positions on the line, and he’s going to start thinking and not just playing. One solution is sticking Herb Taylor at RT, but , that leaves Adrian Jones at RG. I don’t feel comfortable at all with him there. I’d much rather have Albert (who looked good today) and Brian Waters on my blind side, than Adrian Jones and anyone in the world. Not to mention the fact that the balls come out differently when thrown by a lefty, all the boots and whatnot that we’ve practiced will effectively be ‘flipped’.. This would have been a decent pickup… around pre-season/training camp. I think if we went after him now we’re asking for more trouble than it’s worth.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:01 amSimms decision tree
1. HOF past
Tom Brady in NE–Len Dawson in KC (toss up)
2. Passing chances
easily NE since they drop back for 40 passes/game–KC lucky for 20 a game
3. Long term deal
unseating Brady after this year is a pipe dream–KC
4. Helpful front office
Kraft in NE one of the best leaders in business- -sorry Chris, you get to deal with King Carl KC–NE wins there
5. Pay
Oh yeah–well, NE, since the Chiefs like to hoard their money for the Arrowhead renovation. KC is the best team in terms of salary cap, but it means nothing since we dont have anyone to show for it.
Well, it looks like NE is the place…we will see
September 8th, 2008 at 12:09 amxxxlp, your points are always taken into consideration as one of our most loyal readers, and we will work on the sidebars and other things to make navigation easier. At the same time, the content is going to stay pretty consistent. We’re growing, and need to stay at this level to keep it that way. This is also why we revamped http://addictboards.com–for commenters to be able to start their own threads and continue conversations over longer durations of time.
The thing I think you are missing is that I don’t think defenses typically flip their entire defense when facing a southpaw. Sure, Damion would be protecting his blindside, but Albert would be facing better ends. With the way Dame played today, that will soon be Taylor anyway.
I do like Quinn Gray, though. He’s probably No. 2 on my list. I’ll pass on Daunte…
September 8th, 2008 at 12:52 amlachief, nice comment! A pretty good evaluation. The big question will be if NE wants Simms. Baltimore passed on him, so it’s possible. Maybe he’s asking for a chance to compete for a starting job, or guaranteed money, or years…? Hard to say.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:54 amlachief, on the “passing chances” category, I doubt the Patriots are still going to drop back 40 times a game without Brady…just like today, after Brady went down, they came out in a lot less spread formations and were about 50/50 on run to pass ratio.
But I think we should just see what happens in NE this week and if Simms is available after this “experiment”, then we should definately take consideration.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:57 amAnd XXX, just to support what Adam says, I just came home from work and wanted to find out some info about the Simms situation, so of course the first place that I went was AA …. and lo and behold, an update on Simms. I’ve completely stopped visiting my old regulars, KC Star and kcchiefs.com, b/c I get more information here!
September 8th, 2008 at 1:09 amBut XXX, I do agree with you on Quinn Gray though – I remember the game he came in against us and they came back and won the game. That arm and mobility would sure look good in red right now.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:10 amOh I understand Adam, I’m just usually loading/doing 2-3 things at once, and I live in the country, so my connection is a.. well. You can guess. Forums would just be one more thing I had to load in, and sometimes I just have that journalistic bug that makes me want to write these long posts about my Chefs (anyone remember that commercial? Good times.) I’m not saying change it, I’m just always going to get annoyed at points and throw it out there once in awhile, so be prepared, lol.
Yeah D-Mac would face lesser ends, but also alot more blitzes, especially by premier blitzers a la Ware, Merriman, etc. They’d know that’s our weak point (not to mention blind side) and attack relentlessly, like we should have against the Patsies today. And truthfully, I don’t trust D-Mac with just the ends, either. Nor Adrian Jones for that matter. If either one of those guys was my ‘personal protector’ I’d go ahead and get it over with, save myself some pain, and bite the bullet. I wouldn’t trust him to guard my cleats in the locker room. That’s just me.
I think Gray would be a nice pickup though. People tend to think that he’s really really young. But actually he’s 27/28. Not sure which, I need to look that up. He’s been in the league long enough to know the nuances, he’s outshone Simms in pre-season, and I have to admit it, Gray reminds me of Printers, who I thought looked badass last pre-season. And then we cut him. Lame. He made plays with his arm and his legs, just like Gray would. Printers moved our offense.. rather well, actually, and I think Gray could do the same thing. Hell, if all else fails; maybe we can coax Printers back to us, so he can make Chicken Salad (Hard Knocks reference.)
September 8th, 2008 at 3:29 amI dont care for the new way the comments are being organized on the left side… soNso posting on suchNsuch thread… I liked MUCH better the old way.
September 8th, 2008 at 3:30 amThis new thing is sterile.
We discussed it, and feel like this way is easier to keep track of for commenters (and it was requested by several). If we get an overwhelming response about it we may switch it back.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:25 pmI can see Quinn Gray as our qb. He looked good in the preseasonas I pointed out to another commenter last week. Plus he was in Indy all preseason. Herm and Tony see eye to eye on a LOT of things so I think that Gray would be a good fit here. Glad that there are more of you that think the same. Now if we could put that thought in Herm’s ear…………………..
September 8th, 2008 at 6:04 pmI kind of like the new comments thing on the left.
I would agree with xxx on the point of navigation. I’d suggest a link on the “recent posts” that takes you to a page where you can see like the last 30 posts instead of just 10. It’s getting easy to fall behind around here.
Other improvements:
Can you guys start putting the author of the post in the post itself instead of just on the front page? I don’t come here from the front page, I set up all my rss feeds into ChiefsPlanet and come straight into the post, so I can’t see who the author is unless I go out to the main page. I’d suggest just using a small pic at the top of the post to distinguish everyone (like the wizard pic when Merlin posts). Just a little peeve of mine.
Also, I’ll agree that the comments are starting to run over (which is great btw). The system over at AP is awesome. If we could employ a reply system like that it may keep things a little more organized.
