Commenter Sudden had a great nickname for Chan Gailey yesterday, dubbing him “Chancer”–because we don’t yet know if he is the answer or a cancer. I like Chan more than some of the Chiefs‘ other coaches, but I’m by no means sold. As I’ve said a few times now, he’s made lots of teams go, but lots of teams have made him go, too. I think Chancer is about right for now. We can’t yet judge the guy due to the vanilla nature of preseason playcalling. I’m still undecided.
Chan Gailey: offensive answer or offensive (to our eyes) cancer?

I’m OK with Chan. Of course, I’d be OK with any one of us as the OC right now, after the debacle known as Solari was here last year.
This is off-topic, but I just read an article that puts KC as the second-best fan base in the league, behind the EAGLES. (What!) Here’s what they had to say:
2 Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City may be the sixth-smallest market, but they’ve had the second-highest attendance average over the last decade. Also known for having the best food at a tailgate, KC will blow your doors off with its BBQ. Arrowhead is widely regarded as the loudest stadium in the league and that is directly attributed to its fans. What’s even more amazing is that Kansas City hasn’t won a playoff game since 1993 and their last Super Bowl was the same year as Woodstock.
1 Philadelphia Eagles
Some might call this biased, but the most passionate fans in all of sports are without question Philadelphia Eagles fans. They’re cold-blooded and probably give KC a run for their money as being the loudest. They are by far the most knowledgeable fans in the league, and invented the perfect “boo.” What cemented Philadelphia fans’ reputation as the most amoral, loathsome collection in sports is famously called The Booing of Santa Claus. You would boo and throw snow balls too if Santa came out drunk in a half-done costume. Eagles’ fans must deal with sports owners whose actions have not produced a champion in 25 years. The Eagles haven’t hoisted a championship flag in 48 years, but the waiting list for season tickets is so long that you could sell out three stadiums full of Eagles fans for games.
One good note that I saw in that piece was the fact they had Dallas as the 10th best fan base in the league. Didn’t TheLandryHat say they were by far better than us, in just about every way? I don’t think so, scooter.

Wow, I totally just sounded like an advertisor for foxsports >.<. Oh well.
Lets give the man a few games before we either write him off or hail him as the Messiah. And Chiefs fans are obviously superior.
I don’t think we have seen the offense designed for this team as of yet. Afterall, LJ has said we don’t want to let the world see what our full game plan entails. As of today, I will withhold judgment for a few weeks, to check the substitution patterns. I want to see how he uses full advantage of the tools provided via our backfield. Truly, I am excited, many pick the Pats to be slower to the ball on defense, if true, and with the nicked up Brady, if we can get our pressure to literally beat him up a bit… we could surprise people. We could at least expose some things.
After Solari’s play calling it will be easy to dub this guy as “The Answer”. But lets not get too excited about until the offense starts putting up 20-24 points on a consistent basis.
Anything will be an improvement over Solari. ANYTHING. We could have Bimbo the Chimp pick plays from the playbook and have better results.
As for xxlp’s post about the best fan base…No way in hell are Eagles fans better than us. They will turn on a team quicker than 2 year old milk.
First off, by all reports, we will see a different offense that what we’ve been accustomed to over the couple of years. That, in and of itself, is exciting. Can those changes result in success? That remains to be seen.
Adam, with regard to your comment “lots of teams have made him go,” who or what specifically are you referring to?
I am looking forward to the change. I was tired of our receivers running back and forth along the line of scrimmage before the snaop and not having the defense care anymore. The only thing that did was cause illegal formation penalties.
I am also looking forward to having the ability to change the play. Now if they choose to stack the lione we can take advantage instead of running lj into 8 and 9 man fronts.
Chan will be fine, but the effectiveness of our offense will be determined by the play of the offensive line (last year they were extremely offensive) and the development of Croyle ( I hope he stays healthy so we can find out one way or another what his opotential really is).
I don’t know if “chancer” is the answer, but almost anything is better than last year with Solari.

Double D, well GT just fired him. The Cowboys fired him, as I believe the Dolphins and Steelers did, too. That’s what I am talking about. I thought that was obvious.
Oh, I see what you mean. In the case of GT, despite improving their record and taking them to several bowl appearances, he could not accomplish the only thing important to alums – beating the Bulldogs. I believe the Cowboys let him go as part of an across the board regime change somehow involving Parcells as best I recall – no shock there either. I don’t recollect the reasons for his departures from the Fins and Stillers but I really don’t put a lot of stock in that revolving dooe kind of stuff because OC’s are usually the first to get thrown under the bus.
I think that was just me trying to say he’s a pretty good O.C., but not one without his warts in a clever way. I would agree with those points on GT and DAL.
Chan Gailey’s NFL pedigree:
As member of Denver Broncos coaching staff: 3 Superbowl appearances in a span of 6 years.
As a member of Pittsburgh coaching staff:
4 straight AFC Central titles and 1 Superbowl appearance.
As 2nd year Pittsburgh OC (his first OC gig in the NFL): 6th in NFL total offense, 7th in NFL total scoring.
As Dallas HC: immediately after taking over for Barry Switzer (remember those years?) led Cowboys to 2 successive years of playoff appearances.
As Miami OC: consecutive 11-5 records
If history is to our guide, I say he’s an accomplished and effective NFL coach.
None of that really matters though because it’s all about whether or not he can succeed here and now. Nobody really knows that yet but I don’t think anyone can effectively argue that he was a bad choice.
that first drive against the Bears was impressive – when was the last time we had 5 successful third down conversions in one game, much less one drive? I like the counter-toss we stold from the Donkeys, and I LOVE, absolutely LOVE, the naked and the bootleg – Mike Cox or Cottam has been wide open every time we have run those. I am not sure why we went vanilla after that, maybe to hold our cards a little closer to our chests, but I think Gailey will do good things with this offense.
Ah… how quickly we forget… a few short weeks ago all were celebrating Chan’s arrival and dancing in the streets with joy. What’s that you say? The joy is NOT in Chan’s arrival but in Solari’s demise??!
What a mean spirited way to treat a man who coached the best offensive line in the league for us for several years. So what if he bombed as an OC. Folks all over the league at the time said it was kwazy to appoint a Oline coach to be OC. Looks like maybe they were right. To burn him in effigy now is just plain vicious. It’s not his fault LJ got hurt or the line went to crap, and it’s not right to belittle him now.
Chiefs fans should be above this kind of nonsense. Am I glad Solari is no longer the OC? Hell yea! But I’m equally stoked to get a man with Gailey’s resume to fill the job and I intend to express confidence in him until he proves incapable. The biggest thing I notice about his resume? He’s never long without a job as an OC, and he succeeds all all levels.
There’s NO reason to take a “wait and see, the jury’s still out” position on feeling good about this man. If he actually does fail here, which I seriously doubt. I suspect it will be due to things beyond his control; injuries, actual talent, or philosophical differences with Herm – which do not appear to exist now. Give the guy friggin break already!
I agree on Solari. Carl and Herm should have never made him O.C. and should have never stuck him with that vagabond O-line. Still, his offensive was painful to watch. PAINFUL. Great O-line coach, however, and I’m glad he’s got a new gig doing what he actually does well in Seattle.
And the Chiefs play in the Show-Me State, CMF. Earn Your Arrowhead, brother! I think Chan can do it and I hope he does. I’m just not totally sure that he will yet. I won’t put much stock into Sunday either. I suggest everybody else do the same. Let’s start critiquing this man against the Raiders.
I wish he were our OL coach right now, I don’t know much about Bicknell or Joe D,alessandris, but then again we don’t know much about the Chiefs yet.
Adam, since you mentioned teh Show-Me state, I had a question for the neighbors to the west, specifically any KU fans: Mario Chalmers and some other guy (he didn’t hit “the shot” so I don’t remember his name) recently got popped at the rookie seminar for the NBA for smoking weed and having some ladies over. As we all know, Aqib Talib was also a bit of a stoner. Starting to look like you guys know how to put the J back in Jayhawks. I’m wondering, is Mangino’s size anything to do with, perhaps, a voracious appetite resulting from certain substance abuse?
I bet Sticky Icky Ricky’s kid (if his sperms are capable of forming a kid) will be running the ball for KU when he hits collegiate ball.
lmao! And I believe ex-Beaker Luke Axtell was involved in the whole Bam-Van weed smuggling fiasco. Those crazy Beakers. Hopefully, they get smoked by my Cats and the Tigers. Can’t stand ‘em, almost as bad as Oklahoma. It was Darrell Arthur, too.
HEY!! I HAVE earned my Arrowhead and I have a quote from YOU in a prior post saying so!!
I was saying for Chan. You have earned your Arrowhead
Hell, I can’t really blame the guy. I mean I know it’s wrong and whatnot, (and I don’t even smoke weed now) but if I had a background with weed in it, and I just made it to the NB-freakin’-A, I’d be partying with some chicks and booze and whatnot for awhile too. Then of course I’d get down to business and focus on being a role model and perfecting my work on the field/court/etc. But at first? You wouldn’t be able to wake my ass up due to massive consumptions of alcohol, and certain physical exertions.
xxxlp: would you be doing that during the 4 day seminar the NBA was holding for rookies to teach them about the pitfalls of being an NBA player? I mean… the friggin LEAGUE is paying for the room where you’re doing the bong thing??? Gimme a break! Even Jayhawks are supposed to be smarter than THAT! Vern Miller is turning over in his grave (old fart joke reference to the sherriff of Johnson County back in the day)
Ok I just re-read the post and saw that it said the rookie symposium/seminar deal thing. F. That. How retarded can you get? And that’s no offense to any retarded/mentally downtrodden individuals out there, who are offended by how stupid Chalmers is.
