Addict Angles: The Case Against Webb

by Chiefs

UPDATE: Here is Maine_Chiefs’ counterpoint. Fair is fair…

The first year Webb played he did not line up as a WR at all except for the 4th quarter at Pittsburgh. He had 3 catches for 23 yards. The rest of the time he was a kick returner and special teams player.

Last year, he started 2 games. He had 7 catches for 68 yards in this 2 games. Projected out, that is about accurate for his ability level. In 16 games he would have 56 catches for 544 Yards. That’s realistic.

Another key Webb stat is this: In just 12 games last year, 10 of them as a backup, he had 10 3rd down catches. DBowe, starting 15 games and basically playing every snap had 20. That’s what I like about Webb. I think he can be the Bobby Engram-lite type and get those tough 3rd down catches as the 3rd or 4th receiver. I don’t think the Chiefs see him as starter material and I agree. But the boy can play and be an asset to his team.

Here is a scathing case against Chiefs WR Jeff Webb that was recently made by commenter xxxlp…

Webb’s been activated for 26 games, in 2 years, as a Chief. He had 14 games where he had ZERO, NADA, ZILCH catches. That’s over half, and that’s not good, but moving on. 4 games he played in, he had ONE catch. In 3 games, he had 2 catches apiece. And in only 5 games has he been ‘productive’, with 3+ catches…

Webb has one touchdown. One. And that came in the waning minutes of our season-ending loss to the Jets last year. You may remember it.. We threw to Webb practically the WHOLE second half. He had 4 catches in that game.

At least Devard Darling had some big games and big plays that actually mattered last year. Meanwhile, Webb has played in 26 games, and, in my opinion, not made a positive difference in one of them. The only time he almost did he suffered a brain fart and forgot to get both feet in-bounds on what would have been his only big catch.

I don’t hate Webb personally, I hate what he represents. He is the latest example of how Chiefs compound their draft mistakes by letting them linger and not biting the bullet. If we’re keeping him around for special teams, that’s fine. But this kid will never be a productive WR in the NFL. I’m saying the same thing about him that I said about Samie Parker when we started this site. I don’t think I’ll regret saying this either.

LOL Adam, Your still missing (or ignoring) the point.

It's not your point of view man... it's your delivery. :(

CMF, you are entitled to your opinion.

I don't take things too personally, but, like the Under Amor commercials, I must protect this house. Anyone who comes at me in my own backyard better bring it. I created this site for every Chiefs fan to have a soapbox, because that is what I always wanted desperately. I'm not going to sacrifice that because my opinion doesn't coincide with everybody else's.

As far as being honest "crap" (boy, someone is hostile today :) ), I have to use that disclaimer because Chiefs fans lose their mind when you give anything less than a glowingly positive outlook of the Red and Gold's future. That's just how it is, dude.

Also, remember, whether at ESPN, the Star, Deadspin or here, most commenters only comment when the disagree or have something negative to say. Nature of the game. If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all does not apply to the sports blogosphere. So, that's where debates go sometimes.

Also, I like that we cover all the angles here. In the same week we've had a writer predict that the Chiefs will beat the highly favored Pats, while I predicted them to get blasted 41-10. I like that all ends of the spectrum are represented, and have worked my tail off putting together a well-rounded staff that represents the viewpoints of all Chiefs fans. I don't want any staffer or commenter to cater to anybody--I want people to speak the truth, at least according to them.

I want Chiefs fans to be able to be hopeful and happy and dreamy and all that here...but I also want this to be a place where fans who aren't so high on our direction to speak their mind and vent. It goes both ways.

My comment about people saying we have a "great" receiving corps was directed at xxxlp's comment. Not that he was saying that we had a "great" wide receivers corps, and not that I was crapping on anyone else's parade for having said so. I merely stated what I believe to be true. I AM positive. And I'm not being negative in any way. But I'm not going to sit here and be a homer running around saying how "great" our wide receiving corps is. I agree that there is a lot of potential. I never said anything about "potential" good or bad though. Let's not turn one thing into a completely different thing. Settle.

I didn't see your response. I will update the post with your response and let everybody else decide.

What bothers me the most about the 'just being honest' crap we see too much of on this site is the thinly disguised dig it is at the other fans who come here instead of at the team. It often feels like Adam is taking dissenting commentary WAAAAY too personal.

What purpose is served by making folks who have HOPE feel bad about the team is beyond me. You can have a different point of view without raining on anyone else's parade... but that's not what's happening here.

I can tell you for a fact it's beginning to bore me to tears to bear witness to this constant negativity. It's getting to the point where I post less and enjoy my visits to the site less everytime I come. If that's representative of the experience other users are having... it will eventually become an anchor on the site's ability to attract and retain new members.

Adam ,

You reposted xxlp's post without reposting my response that showed his stats to be misleading.

C'mon - fair and balanced right?

Ill second that motion

Who said our receiver's were "great"? No-one.

Who said they were good? Maybe a few.

Who said they have potential as young guys? Me!

Our WR corp is the same as our QB. Unproven.

I find it disheartening the campaign people are going on of trashing the team because their Chosen One, Bobby Sippio was cut. That's kind of a spoiled brat move if you ask me.

I don't know anyone that thinks Webb is going to be a great WR. Hell, he was a late 6th round draft pick. So why you keep kicking the dog? Maurice Price was undrafted and he made this squad. What does that tell you?

Can we not just root for the guys that are wearing the red and gold while they're on the team and then campaign to replace them in the offseason when a change can be made and you have another year of evidence to backup or readjust your position?

Guess thats not what role model Jason Whitlock would do....

Any one that thinks we even have a "good" wide receiving corps are a little delusional.

To get my point on the whole thing, read the post that I put out there, that's not the whole thing. But another angle is.. Our number 2 guy right now, at least until Franklin gets back, is DVD. He has dismally horrible numbers. Webb is our number 3 or 4 guy, and his numbers aren't great either. I'm skeptical of the fact we all think we have a 'great' WR corps, when in my mind, I'd take an aging Kennison, D-Bowe, and Sippio over D-Bowe, DVD, and Webb. In time, Devard and Jeffrey may prove to be assets, but right at this minute? Go look at their stats, and you tell me.

Jeez! Last time I checked, nobody (I know) was saying the guy should be anything more than a #3 or #4 receiver (and marginal at that!). Comparing his numbers to our #2 WR serves what point exactly? Considering the offense he played for last year, I'd argue that his numbers were at least semi-acceptable for 2nd year #3. And I still maintain he's more effective in traffic that any of the receivers we just cut.

Ouch. I've not liked Webb as a productive receiver, but I didn't realize it was THAT bad.

Ummmm.... I'ma thinking,,,,,,NOT!

But otherwise you're hoping Webb does well. I get it.
