Final Cuts Include Route 71, Sippio

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Breaking News | COMMENTS: 25 Comments

While I’m thrilled to see that A.A. favorites Dantrell “Macho Man” Savage and Maurice Price made the Chiefs‘ final squad, I’m heartbroken to see Bobby Sippio get released. It hurts, but with our youth obsession he was an old man at 28 (a year younger than yours truly…I guess I’m ancient). Additionally, Dwayne Bowe and Will Franklin were locks, while Devard Darling and Jeff Webb are favorites of the coaches. I don’t think Mo Price was better, but he was more consistent. I’m fine with the decision. At the same time, I’m hopeful that Sipp will land elsewhere and continue his career.

What I’m not heartbroken about is that I don’t have to spend $70 on a Sippio jersey and, more importantly, Historic Route 71 has finally been closed. The albatross known as Will Svitek is officially off the roster. I wish the Chiefs would just man up and hand Napoleon Harris his pink slip, too, but it looks like they don’t want to publicly admit they made a mistake, and an expensive one at that. Kendrell Bell the sequel?

From Bob Gretz:

What does everybody else think about the cuts?

I already posted this somewhere, but I’m gonna do it again.

I don’t understand keeping so many backs and also Sams. I wish we’d have dumped Sams and Battle and kept Sippio and either Kuale and Rumph.

  2. TeamPriest31 says:

I guess whatever they do we have to live with. Bye SIPPIO your hands will be missed!

  3. Dave says:

Nap. Harris continues to piss me off!

  4. Maine_Chief says:

I guess with Sams injury they needed to keep Savage. There would be no reason to keep both otherwise. So if Sams hamstring injury is minor, Savage could maybe have 1 game to make an impression. Interesting.

I would like to see Rumph make it. He’s a little nasty. I imagine he’ll be on the practice squad however.

Glad Stallings is gone. He was a waste of a pick. I also am pumped about Cox beating out Manderino. What a game Cox had against St.Louis – both receiving and blocking.

Also JP Foschi had a great game against ST.L. He’s a guy who by all rights should have been camp fodder. I love those underdogs who just earn their job.

  5. KCMizzou says:

I’m glad about Cox as well.

  6. CurtMerzFan says:

I think it must have come down to not only is Price younger, he’s fleeter of foot… and in the NFL, speed rules. But I’m sorry to see Sippio go too. He was not only a threat in the red zone… with him, TonyG, LJ/Charles and D-Bo on the field, third downs as well would be a nightmare for d-coordinators.

It will be interesting to see who they sign to the practice squad. I think McMahan might be there, as well as Kuale, Rumpf and Lokey.

  7. DJ says:

Well lets see if Sippio ends up on another NFL roster before you go complaining about favoritism again. The guy just is not that good.

I don’t think Nap Harris has anything to do with them “not wanting to admit they made a mistake”, I think the fact they have benched him is that. The truth is they are very short on LB talent. I still suspect that this is a humbling tactic by Gunther and that if Pat Thomas isnt getting the job done they will give Nap Harris a chance to come back.

Remember that Gun once benched Jared Allen for not following directions and it straightened him out.

  8. TeamPriest31 says:

Buc’s did cut Quarter back (Chris Simms). I say we jump on that right now. I like the guy. I live in Tampa and the dude can play.

  9. Dave says:

DJ – that is exactly how I feel with Harris. We all want him to just grab that starting spot so bad, but he (and Williams) feel that we owe him the spot.

If you want it – earn it!

He is a frikin’ baby right now and I don’t understand it – we need him!

Really making me wish we would have grabbed Vilma in the off season.

I wish I had his talent – I would throw Gunther on his but and then go pile drive the first QB I saw!

  10. Adam says:

We’ll see if Sippio sticks somewhere else. I think he’s got a shot. The guy has so much heart. I don’t understand the Chiefs fans who hate him. Well, you got your wish, haters, he’s gone. I hope you’re all happy :(

And we’ll see if Harris plays at all. I’m betting on not so much Jared, and more of a Kendrell Bell-type Chiefs career.

And the Chiefs do play favorites–all coaches do. Really, it’s impossible not to.

  11. Maine_Chief says:

5 bucks says Victor Hobson is a Chief tomorrow night.

  12. Adam says:

I was thinking the same thing, Maine. Nice call. He’s a Herm draft pick that started 14 games last year.

Then again, the Pats cut him and they do know LBs. On the other hand, they run a 3-4 and have some great backers.

I think he’ll be a Chief as well.

  13. merlinnj says:

I don’t think Nap can sleep easy just yet. This is round one. Remember how many roster moves we made last year after the cut down date, before the first game?

  14. stramwastheman says:

I don’t hate Sippio. The last thing they need is another slow-footed receiver. Its hard to argue with people that fell in love with him because of that HBO show. If he is so awesome how come the entire league passed on him last year and given the lack of talent at receiver last year they wouldn’t let him see the field. As much as people may hate Edwards do you really think he would deliberately let an “awesome” receiver languish on the bench when it was clear they couldn’t score points? He got cut because he’s not that good. There’s no hatred in speaking the truth.

  15. xxxlp says:

I’m not happy about Lokey and Kuale being cut. Lokey is an extremely young guy, and while he’s small for a DT (~287 lbs) I saw him man-handle some of the lineman he played against, and never gave up on a play, that I can remember. And Kuale had more than a few nice tackles on D, as well as many nice ST plays.

  16. stramwastheman says:

    Samie Parker got cut again….

  17. Adam says:

Thanks, stram. That made my day!

  18. blue says:

Sippio played his way off the team. He earned his cut. No WR had more drops than Bobby in the exhibitions, and he couldn’t afford any, since hands are his ticket.

  19. Rihavens says:

I think this is the conservative way to go. I am not suprised by any of this. They guys who showed they wanted it kept their job (and a few that didnt show up.) Aside from Bobby Sippio, I am not suprised by anyone. I expected Sippio to be gone, and honestly if it was between Battle, Savage, and sippio staying it was a no brainer.

  20. Adam says:

Keeping Battle is extremely worthless. He will never see the field. But, oh, well…Herm knows best…we hope…

  21. xxxlp says:

Yes, but wouldn’t it be just plain terrific to see a play that had all 5 of our backs out there at once? LJ next to Brodie in shotgun, 4 wides.. err.. 4 RB’s split out wide, Trips to the right, Battle there to block, Kolby and Savage behind, with JC split to the left. Opposing D’s would be like… ok, seriously, what the hell? I don’t even know if that is legal, but it’d sure be hella sweet. Quick WR(RB) screens with Battle and Kolby blocking, Savage is a quick little dude, a quick slant to JC, a reverse, a draw, a RB Power call, we could do it all from that formation. And just about everyone of our guys has shown they have excellent hands. Ahh the visions I see in my head. Beauty, I tell you, beauty.

  22. Adam says:

They’re eligible, so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be legal. You could totally do that. Might be more effective in college, but you could do it if you wanted to.

  23. CurtMerzFan says:

    I think xxxlp got hisself a tech-no-color dream machine… :P

  24. macdawg says:

Why cut Michael Allan? I thought he was pretty decent. Whats the scoop on the 3rd TE then?

  25. Adam says:

Because Cottam is a better receiver and blocker, and John Paul Foschi is a much better blocker who can play H-back, too. I’m sure Allan will get another shot somewhere else.
