Sippio Cup To Stay On The Menu?

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Gameday | COMMENTS: 29 Comments

The Sippio Cup. It’s an A.A. joke from last season, which I believe was started by commenter xxxlp. I’ll have more on the game later (after I re-watch the game…it’s on a 2 AM CT on the NFLN), but this is the Bobby Sippio I know. When Sippio has both his confidence and the opportunity, these are the kind of plays he is capable of. Just his presence in the red zone alone is enough to warrant keeping him around. How could a team possibly defend Dwayne Bowe, Sipp and Tony Gonzalez with their size, hands and leaping ability? Impossible. I think he did enough to make the Chiefs‘ final roster, especially given Dantrell Savage’s latest gaffe and Will Franklin’s injury. Only time will tell…

(FYI, if he does make the final cut, I will stay true to my promise, order my No. 83 jersey and wear it for every game this year.)

Let’s hear it, Addicts, do you think Bobby Sippio makes the Chiefs?

  1. xxxlp says:

Alas, t’was not I who coined the Sippio Cup, although I can’t remember for the life of me who it was. I’ve just been the guy who’s used it more than everyone else in lots of posts. :P

That’s what I’m saying about Sippio. As I’ve been saying all along, with his acrobatic leaping catches, and his sure-fire hands, he’s a stud in the red zone, a la Marc Boerigter. Finally we use him right, and what happens? TD. It’s all about playing to the player’s strengths. This is why Thigpen rolls out so much (although I hope he rolls straight the hell outta KC.)

Damn Sams and his ability to suck, blow, and any other pun I can make about his first name. Just before we are about to can him, he up and has a good game for us. Savage.. I think he ends up on the practice squad. He might make a nice returner one day, but too many mental mistakes have held him back this year, I doubt he makes final cuts, as returner was the only thing he had going for him. And Robinson is on the PUP list, so could come back after 6 weeks, if he is healthy, and provide a returner, if B.J. is blowing.

I really can’t wait to see what all roster cuts take place, and who we end up signing. Probably at least one offensive lineman (please Jesus don’t let us start the season with Adrian Jones), maybe a D lineman, a ‘backer for sure, HOPEFULLY a freakin’ QB, and anything afterwards I consider fluff.

  2. woody says:

Sippio looked ok…I dont know if he makes it just based on that though…we will see…its exciting

Sams looked good…you might feel silly for dogging him the other day, then he looked like his old self…unfortunately he looked TOO MUCH like his old self…as he is now injured with a hamstring…

  3. CurtMerzFan says:

I think you’re wrong about returns being the only thing Savage has going for him… and he looked good on the returns I saw. He made a rookie read on the one punt thinking it was coming inside the 10 where they tell them to let it go. I think we should overlook that as growing pains.

As to Sippio, I think we should keep him. To me the WR that’s shown us the least amount of production is DVD. Price has looked great in games and Sippio is very capable when used correctly. I hope we keep him.

  4. yes only becuase of how thin we are and franklins injury

  5. HTrayne says:

I think it’s pretty simple: Jeff Webb and Devard Darling did not make this team. Neither has shown any proof that they can be either a consistent pass-catcher or a bigtime playmaker, and that’s what this offense needs. Both of these guys have had several seasons in the NFL to develop and turn into everydown guys, but neither has, and in staying true to our youth movement, we cut them loose and go with the players who have shown flashes of greatness.

    1. Bowe
    2. Franklin
    3. Price
    4. Sippio
    5. (empty – keep it open for Robinson after he comes off PUP and keep one of our “heralded” running backs – or a needed linebacker – through Week 6 in case LJ or another back goes down with an injury)

Why won’t that work? Because Franklin is hurt, so we’ll have to keep either Webb or Darling, at least until Week 6, unless we plan on playing Weeks 1-2 with 3 receivers and hope no one gets hurt. Not going to happen, but I think by the end of the season, my Top 4 will reflect the Chiefs’ depth chart.

  6. TeamPriest31 says:

I’m drinking out of the Sippio Cup.

    Devard Who????
Who the F**k is that? Has the guy even put on a jersey this pre-season? The guy hasn’t caught one ball yet. Sippio needs to be one the team, so we can see more plays like this. I still don’t like seeing us only having 5 catches between all of our recievers lastnight! Im glad we won lastnight and running the ball was great. I want to see more production out of our Qb play.

  7. Double D says:

So Huard had nothing to do with that catch? Was I the only one who saw a perfectly thrown fade route? Keep Damon, send Thiglet packing.

I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen at wide receiver. Not sure I understand what the story on DVD is – hopefully Gailey is just sandbagging with him. At this point, the guys who’ve impressed me the most this preseason are Bowe, Franklin, Price, and Webb. If Webb has made a bad play this preseason, I guess I missed it – plus he showed up big on special teams last night.

Sippio caught a well thrown pass last night against subpar coverage. It was the kind of pass that no receiver should drop. Problem is, he’s blown other opportunities.

  8. Adam says:

The only other guys on our team that could have made that catch are D-Bowe and Tony G.

And, yes, that was a great fade pass…but a better catch. Actually, Brodie would have had a TD pass to The Show if he had of thrown his fade pass as well. I will get to all that and more…re-watched the first half, so I have some real good notes today…

  9. Double D says:

Any receiver of Sippio’s size that can’t hang onto a ball like that is not worth keeping. To be honest, Sippio did well enough last night to merit consideration as a member of the final roster. If last night’s performance was enough to earn him a spot, then good for him and I hope he catches a boatload of TDs this year. I think you also have to admit that Huard proved his value as the veteran backup.

  10. Double D says:

Webb and Sippio are different kinds of receivers and they generally run different kinds of routes but even so, if it had been Webb instead of Sippio, I’m confident he also would have made that catch. As far as comparing Sippio and Webb, I have not been as impressed with Sippio across the middle as I have been with Webb. I think Sippio’s greatest value is in the red zone and frankly I feel like we have a lot of guys on our team that can do that. Webb is the kind of guy that can relied on to help you move the chains and eat up clock.

I currently see at least 4 backs, 2 TEs and 3 WRs that can catch the ball quickly and create significant YAC. Bowe, Franklin, and Webb are guys that can also give us a little bigger chunks. Our biggest WR need continues to be the guy that can strike deep. Other than Price, I have yet to see anybody who satisfies that requirement. Franklin, when’s he back to health, may be the missing piece to that puzzle. Exactly what DVD is supposed to bring remains unanswered.

  11. JohnNdallas says:

Webb all day every day for me over DVD, Webb is a baller, he can contribute to our special teams.

I’m happy with our QB’s keep all three!

  12. Double D says:

Dump Thiglet & grab a QB off the wire.

  13. JohnNdallas says:

No,No,No,Bite your tongue Double D LOL I like the kid, He has a lot of upside,Like I said the other nite he reminds me a little of Rich Gannon. :)

  14. Suzy D. from the NE! says:

    It was Redbeard.

  15. sandya says:

I agree that Huard is worth keeping right now..Why is everyone so bent on trading him? The guy is accurate, and why would we trade our only winning qb away? Last time I checked Brodie and thigpen have never won an NFL game..

Thank God people are starting to realize this whole Devard Darling situation..Come on herm! Get your head out of your ass! What else do we need to see here..Why is this dude our #2 receiver? I think Webb has actually done really well this off season..My final is:
Bowe, Franklin, Price, Webb, Sippio..I think we keep all of our QB’s as well..Trading Huard would be idiotic and plain dumb given Brodies inexperience and fate of always getting injured. And I totally agree, thigpen reminds me of Gannon!

  16. Adam says:

It was Redbeard I think. I also think Redbeard left us…the combination of us backing L.J. and giving both Boom’s and Jared’s exoduses thumbs up was too much for him I think.

  17. Adam says:

And I will post on DVD soon.

  18. CurtMerzFan says:

I detect a snif of inside info on DVD in the air…

  19. Adam says:

No, not really. I just think everybody is overreacting.

  20. thebryman says:

I’ll post on DVD now, he will not get cut, nor should he be cut. I’m sure he will apologize to every one of you guys for not lighting it up in MEANINGLESS games. the whole point of the preseason is to get reps, and get some work in. He’s not getting a bunch of reps or catches, but he has only gotten FIRST TEAM REPS, which means that he will make the team, and he will play a role. I get annoyed by people that put way too much stock into preseason. He has nothing to prove to any of us, if the coaches are sold, which I have heard nothing to counter that they aren’t, than quit calling for a guys head. He’s not some guy barely playing with the third team. He’s not playing for a reason, and that reason isn’t that he sucks. I think we should get rid of Tony too, since he hasn’t done anything in the preseason.

  21. JohnNdallas says:

Who is “Redbeard”? lol I’m a out-of towner.

  22. Scott says:

Good call bryman. I agree. There’s a reason that DVD (glad to see that stuck) is still a starter. I think there’s also a reason he’s not getting thrown to: he could turn out to be a wildcard. Teams won’t gameplan for him much because he’s been a non-factor so far. I honestly think CG did this on purpose to create every little advantage he can against NE. If he’s as fast and as solid as they raved about during training camp he could be a guy that will bite teams in the ass for underestimating him.

Or I could be totally wrong here…

  23. Double D says:

Thanks for clearing that up thebryman. I feel a whole lot better about the guy now.
I think it’s still a little too early to make that call on Gonz just yet though. I’ve seen what he’s capable of and so I have to think that he deserves at least one more shot to prove himself. :P

  24. sandya says:

thebryman – Of course the preseason doesn’t mean a thing..But you bet your ass he has something to prove..Look at the facts, he caught 28 passes in 4 years at Baltimore..and their WR’s are not known for being remotely good. We have reason to speculate and say what we will when we see receivers making plays, and DVD doing nothing. Preaseaon or not Price should be playing ahead of this guy..By the way Price is 22 Years old..22..Why are we playing Darling who is 27 (although he won’t be that).

Regardless I know all too well that Darling won’t get cut. There is not even a chance of that..Sippio will likely be out..But I’m sure Darling will be our #2 guy once the season starts…Oh and yeah Tony G. also has caught more than 28 passes in 4 seasons..Sorry but that comparison just won’t do.

  25. sandya says:

My point is this guy has done nothing abs. nothing to prove he deserves this spot..He did nothing at Baltimore and has done nothing hear. That’s the only point to be made..But I’d love for him to be good, we certainly need all the help we can get.

  26. thebryman says:

I’ll be the first to bag on him if he doesn’t get it done during the season, but ripping on a receiver for not making catches during the preseason is ridiculous. He can’t throw the ball to himself. I never said he didn’t have anything to prove, I said he doesn’t have anything to prove to any of us during the preseason. “Any of us,” meaning fans, if the coaches like what they see, and don’t want to work him a lot in preseason, then I’ll put at least a little faith in that until the games matter, we can’t call the guy a bust based on tune up games. You say that the preseason doesn’t mean a thing, then you talk up Price like he’s the answer at #2, based on preseason numbers. So does it matter, or does it not matter? I have two points, one that I have to make again, since you argued against yourself in your last post, preseason stats don’t matter, not one bit at all, it’s a glorified practice, my second point is that the players past doesn’t matter to me at all, I’ve seen plenty of guys given the benefit of the doubt based on good past performance, and guys ripped on, because they didn’t cut it before, and it can go either way. Don’t mention previous years with me, and don’t mention preseason number to me, it’s not gonna win you any arguments.

  27. Sudden says:

DVD held a downfield block that got Kolby into paydirt. That’s a lot more than I can say for Mr. Awesome (you guys remember that disgraceful attempt at a downfield block against Miami?) and his two preseason catches (including a couple of drops on easy to moderately challanging passes).

  28. xxxlp says:

Cryman, excuse me, Bryman, said: “Don’t mention previous years with me, and don’t mention preseason number to me, it’s not gonna win you any arguments.”

Then tell me, my liege, what shall we talketh about in the land of Bryville? We can’t bring up the MEANINGFUL REGULAR SEASON/POST SEASON GAMES, that players have previously played in, and we can’t bring up the meaningless, ‘glorified practices’ that are pre-season games.. If regular season counts for that much, cupcake, then why can’t we allude to those previous seasons? They don’t matter? I beg to differ. Previous seasons earn some over-the-hill players, or highly touted free-agents millions and millions of dollars each year. It IS about how you’ve played over your whole career. He’s 27. He’s got less than 100 catches. Significantly less. IN MEANINGFUL GAMES!.. to use your words. 28 catches.. 4 years.. can you do math Bryman? those were meaningful games, buckaroo. You said it yourself, pre-season doesn’t matter, it’s the season that counts. And guess what, in his seasons, which counted, he couldn’t crack the starting lineup, he couldn’t haul in an average of a measly 10 freakin’ receptions a season, and he hasn’t shown us squat here.

And tell me, Bryman, how pre-season games aren’t important again? Oh that’s right, they don’t let coaches and personnell units evaluate young and upcoming talent, right? God, why would I think of such an absurd idea? They wouldn’t let us see a guy like Price, who has excelled with his only given shot so far.. That’d be ridiculous.

  29. xxxlp says:

And actually, I got it wrong, and gave even more credit to DVD than he deserved. This is according to Wiki:

    Professional career

    Baltimore Ravens
Darling has 20 catches for 331 yards and three touchdowns in his career. He had a breakout game on Nov. 18, 2007 against the Cleveland Browns with 4 catches for 107 yards and his first NFL touchdown.

100+ yards is nice. 20 catches in 4 years is not so nice. I don’t much care for one-game wonders. Kolby Smith had one 100+ yard game last year, and I don’t want him as a starter… DVD has one 100+ yard game against arguably the worst defence in the league last year, and it constitutes nearly 1/3 of his stats? Weak.
