A.A.D.Q.: "Bonecrushing" LB?

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: AADQ | COMMENTS: 15 Comments

This one is from Double D…

Hey Adam, how about this for today’s AADQ?

With DaJuan Morgan now in the mix and given the apparent lack of legitimate alternatives, is there a good argument for trying to reshape Bernard Pollard into a MLB?

Double D

I think the Chiefs would look at moving him outside and possibly Derrick Johnson inside first, but I like the idea. I’m also a big Bonecrusher guy, but his tackling wasn’t so hot the other night. Just playing devil’s advocate here. It is definitely an idea that merits consideration. Hey, this is the outside-the-box thinking that gave the Bears Brian Urlacher. I also have always thought Adam Archuleta should have been moved to linebacker. It certainly wouldn’t be an unprecedented move.

Addicts, what do you think about the proposition of moving Pollard to LB (either spot) in order to get him and the Torpedo on the field together?

    Initial points for discussion:

1: He’s got the right build for it.
2: Because of their speed, I really like the idea of having DJ and Williams on the outside and so I wouldn’t want to see either to brought inside.
3: Open field tackling has been the only real knock on Pollard. Seems that might be less of an issue as an inside backer plus he’s the kind of guy that might come up big in short passing situation. If he doesn’t get the INT, he sure as well would lay the wood.

  2. Double D says:

    make that “sure as hell”

  3. BucktheFroncos says:

I’m still a Big Pat Thomas fan but I would like to see Pollard given a chance there. Anyone else glad to hear Merrimen is going to try and play? You know that knee is the first thing Herm tells Waters and Cox to hit when we see the Powder blue this year.

  4. jester says:

We don’t see San Diego until week 10. I doubt Merriman will be around by the time we face them.

I do think he will be the target of a lot of teams though.

  5. jester says:

Regarding Bone Crusher…I would like to see us get our most talented players on the field as much as possible. if that means moving Pollard to MLB then I am all for it.

  6. JohnNdallas says:

I think its a great idea,I don’t think it would be a huge transition (Safety to Mike Backer) and I unlike “BucktheFoncos” am not sold on P. Thomas as the Mike. I agree with Double D, Pollards problem is wrapping guys up, just throwing a shoulder trying to knock the guy out. That shouldn’t be a problem in the middle. He’s got good speed to cover on passing downs, and that would put 3 of the teams biggest hitters on the field at the same time.

  7. Rihavens says:

    Why not.

  8. xxxlp says:

I like the idea, and I believe we talked about this briefly on a post just after the draft, when we were discussing how Donnie E. wouldn’t be moving to the inside backer position, and how we didn’t like Nappy much either. It’d be nice, (theoretically) and even if we ran a 3-3-5 at some points like Gunny is working on, we could have Morgan, Quick-draw McGraw, and Page. Morgan looks very solid, especially at tackling. McGraw stepped in well for us last year in all kinds of situations, and Page’s biggest positive is his pass coverage. I wouldn’t feel like we suffered much at all if this move happened. Is Pollard willing to change positions, though? And can he learn to wrap up, is the biggest issue. He would be a feared MLB, at least from WR’s, as they’d be scared of the huge hit coming over the middle of the field. But he’d be facing significantly more running plays, and if he tries to big hit some of those big boys, instead of wrapping up; it just ain’t gonna work out.

  9. ComeSackMyQB says:

I think he could have a huge presence at LB, xxxlp is right, he would be feared. Think about it, Javon Walker cutting across the middle on an in route, here comes the ball, he’s up and POP, he really had no chance, poor guy. LOL

  10. merlinnj says:

IMO, Pollard is too light o play in the middle. He could be an OLB, but we aer firmer there than in the middle. It’s an option, but I see it more as a variation of our Nickel package.

  11. CurtMerzFan says:

What I like about this idea is it puts a PLAYMAKER at MLB vice a question mark. I think it’s a good suggestion… now… if we could find a bug who would temp the air in Herm’s ear… :)

  12. JASON says:

we definitely should at least try pollard as a mlb.

  13. macdawg says:

too small for MLB, I think he would do really well at OLB for blitzing, and prefer he have an off season to bulk up before an experiment like that.

  14. Adam says:

Macdawg, I agree with you. I do think, however, that if he falters at safety that we look at moving him outside. Especially if Demorrio Williams busts, or if he proves to only be a one-dimensional pass rusher. I think B.P. could be a fine Will backer or rover-type player. Especially in nickel packages.

  15. stevenh says:

Pollard doesn’t play the safety position well, it probably wouldn’t hurt to put him somewhere else. Both he and Pollard were out of posiiton bad on the Ginn touchdown pass. Not a good sign for two of the “veteran” guys on the roster.
