Not Feely So Good

Posted by: Adam Best

What the eff is going on here? Yesterday, I was totally stoked because we signed a real kicker and my least favorite player got cut by my least favorite team. Now, not only does Samie Parker have a new gig with the Panthers, but the Chiefs have already cut Jay Feely. Did he even have time to get his cleats on? This is unbelievable, man. From Red Zone:

The Chiefs released veteran kicker Jay Feely today, one day after signing him.

Feely went 11-15 on field goals Monday and 13 of 15 today but that wasn’t as good as either Connor Barth (28 of 30, including a perfect 15 of 15 today) or Nick Novak (27 of 30). Barth and Novak will kick for the job in Thursday night’s game against the Rams at Arrowhead Stadium.

Does anyone else consider this a fair shot for Feely, because I certainly don’t? Stupid Chiefs…

    Oh wow…..

If nothing else, it is nice to see Barth and Novak step up the pressure!

  3. 3. Adam Says:

I guess…but they aren’t nearly as battle tested as Feely. I mean, if I was Feely I would be pissed. He barely stepped off the plane. Why didn’t they at least give him the chance to kick during a game?

  4. 4. JohnNdallas Says:

    Feely used?

  5. 5. SinyGuy Says:

I agree Adam.. I would be way pissed off and would let it be known. I think the pressure in most cases especially with QB and Kickers is a must and it apparently goes to show.

However I believe they should have let Novak go, Keep Barth (all else practice squad) and kept Feely for the constant pressure. B) though I didn’t give a ‘A’, but to have Feely kick in a game (THUR) would have at the least been a fair way shot!

Have to say I am a little disappointed in this decision. Now ironically I have to go with Novak (experience alone). Dislike what I say, but I have to say stick with him throughout the season as we don’t want to do what we did last year and signing Feely AGAIN later won’t happen and even it did…would he really want to play for us? Not likely.

    A SHAME.

    CHIEFS!

I haven’t really read up on it, so I maybe I missed something. But he had a great year last year with the Dolphins, but was cut, and he hasn’t gotten another shot until he got the call this week, and he didn’t last long. Something sounds like it’s not quite right with him, be it physically, or whatever. Maybe it wasn’t a good move to get rid of him so quickly, but the coaches saw something that they really didn’t like if they didn’t give him much of a shot. Normally I’m hesitant to side with the coaches without a bit of skepticism, just because nobody knows more than me, and nobody can convince me differently, but they must have saw something that just wasn’t right, that’s the only way this could possibly make sense.

  7. 7. Adam Says:

Yeah, hopefully for him he can audition for another team in a game this week. I honestly hope he does well elsewhere, because I just think this was an ignorant decision. He was damn near as good as the other guys, and he was fresh off a plane and rusty. And he’s much more proven. Oh well…

  8. 8. merlinnj Says:

This is a very strange turn of events. I would like to hear more about this. I suspect there must be a story behind this. You don’t sign and then cut someone so fast without something unusual happening.

  9. 9. SinyGuy Says:

I just feel stupid posting what I did the other night about how Mr Wide Right said in the paper “I am a kansas City Chief”. Ahhh, granted it was all in a DAY!

  10. 10. eyepod Says:

He coudln’t kick off at all. And he also sucked outside the 40. All the time. Forever. He’s old and a waste. Barth has looked great for a young guy (especially compared to Medlock).

  11. 11. xxxlp Says:

The guy was probably still jet-lagged and we booted him. A shame, he’s an All-Pro, albeit an old one.

I don’t mind this too much, Barth has looked well enough for his first year, and he’s got a ton of potential, especially if he works on getting more distance on kickoffs. We’re rebuilding, folks, so although I’d rather have a proven vet to bail us out of tough situations late in games, I think in the long run we’re better off. Either way, if Feely lands somewhere solid, and has a Rob Bironas-esque type of year, then we’re going to look foolish. Again.

  12. 12. taylor Says:

You cant argue with the stats, Feely missed 6, while the others missed 5 combined. It was right to go with the best 2. feely lost fair and square.

  13. 13. Adam Says:

I can and will argue with the stats. The other guys have settled in Kansas City and have been kicking with the Chiefs for months. Homeboy just got off the freakin’ plane! Also, what matters for kickers is how the handle pressure in a game situation. You can’t artificially simulate that.

Fire special teams coach Mike Priefer! I’ve had enough and am starting the campaign!

  14. 14. macdawg Says:

Barth is the kicker that actually has enough power for kick offs right?

If so and he’s in a contest please lets just roll with this guy and hunt around again next year if he doesn’t pan out. If he does pan out sign him for a few years and get the kicker position taken care of for a while. It shouldn’t be this f**kin hard to find a suitable kicker.

  15. 15. Adam Says:

Why not have Colquitt boot off kickoffs, we know he has the league and that he will be here. That way we can turn our focus to an accurate FG kicker. Priefer…

  16. 16. CurtMerzFan Says:

Is it possible folks that Feely failed his physical?

  17. 17. KCMizzou Says:

Good news! Medlock was cut by the Rams today! We can maybe pick him up!

  18. 18. xxxlp Says:

Adam, look at it logically, take a gander at the ‘big picture’. We’re rebuilding. No one expects us to win this year so we need to get guys in to get them experienced. Feely is a veteran who is just past his prime, and is going to most likely consistently decline over the years to come, whereas Barth is a rookie, with potentially years and years of good kicking left. I also like his approach to the ‘art’ of kicking, if you haven’t seen it; head to this URL and watch the vid:

    http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2008/4/29/469973/undrafted-free-agent-signi

Another point is Feely’s declining ability for long kickoffs. His leg is just not as strong as it used to be. Barth is the only one to kickoff INTO the endzone, not to the 5, 10, or 15 yard line. I’m all for veteran kickers, I wanted Olindo Mare on our team, but I’m actually kind of excited for Barth, and the potential of a younger guy, now. I still think we should have kept Feely for competition for Barth’s ‘cerebral’ aspect of kicking, but he threw the dice and hit snake-eyes. It happens.

  19. 19. Adam Says:

He’s only 32, which is like being about 25 for any other position. Also, why not have Colquitt kickoff. I am 100% he has the leg strength to do so.

This is more about my disgust with Mike Priefer than about Feely.

And I think we should have cut Novak, not Barth or Feely.

  20. 20. xxxlp Says:

Agreed on Novak, but not on Colquitt. It’s much like the speculation that Brian Waters would move to LT. Just shouldn’t happen. Brian Waters is an exceedingly badass Guard (you better live up to my words this year Big Boy >.<) and as such, shouldn’t be moved around to other positions where he could risk losing his ‘form’ or in other words, sucking.

I don’t doubt Dustin (say that 10 times fast) has the leg strength to make the kicks, but why risk him doing that when Barth is kicking to the endzone already? It’ll just be more wear-n-tear on Dustin’s leg, which we need to win key field-position battles, and help our D out. Not to mention the mechanics of punting and kicking are slightly different. He’s been working out to specifically punt the ball, I wouldn’t feel comfortable with him kicking off, as he could tweak something or pull a muscle that isn’t as finely honed as the ones he uses on a daily basis now. If we’re in a rebuilding mode, we should rebuild everything that needs to have work done upon it. Kicker is no exception, as we blew last year.

This is also basically the same debate as the Aaron Rodgers versus Brett Favre contreversy.. Favre for sure gave the Packers a better chance to win NOW. Aaron Rodgers is also the better bet for longevity, and thus, gives the Packers a better chance of winning in the long run. Feely perhaps gives us a better chance to win this year, and maybe 4-5 years after that. If Barth pans out, we could have a kicker for 15 years. Pick your poison. I’m going with the rebuilding flow now, and saying Barth was, and is, the way to go.

  21. 21. xxxlp Says:

Lol, Adam, there’s sense of humor for you:

KcMizzou says: Good news! Medlock was cut by the Rams today! We can maybe pick him up!

  22. 22. Adam Says:

If Barth kicks for us for 15 years, I will change my middle name to “Connor Barth.” Write it down :)

  23. 23. Adam Says:

    And there is some humor!

  24. 24. xxxlp Says:

Best believe if that happens I’m going to be writing letters signed for Adam Connor Barth, almost daily! :)

  25. 25. KCMizzou Says:

What? Wait… sense of humor? I was being serious!!

    No… No, I wasn’t.

  26. 26. Double D Says:

    JNd – “Feely used?” LOL!!
