Welcome To Miami: A 3-4 Warm Up

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Chiefs | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

One thing I haven’t seen pointed out anywhere is that Saturday’s game against Miami and its 3-4 defense will be a great warm-up for the Chiefs‘ opening day game against New England. Granted, the Patriots probably play the scheme a little better than the Dolphins do, but it will still be good to get a look at the scheme before we venture into Foxboro. I’m especially interested in watching how guys like Herb Taylor and Mike Cox fare against the blitzing backers.

What are you going to be watching for come tomorrow night’s game?

There was a lot of talk around the league about how solid our draft class was this year. But so far from what I’ve seen in the preseason, UDFA Mike Cox could be the biggest steal of the year. He can block better than any fullback we’ve had since T-Rich, has Kimble Anders-like hands and vision, and will be a great checkdown target for Brodie on the bootlegs. And his name reminds me of a classically immature junior high joke where the first and last names kinda blend together. Mike Cox is huge. Mike Cox can really open some holes.

This will be a good test for Niswanger too. Because of his height, there has been concern about how he would do going 1 on 1 with a nose tackle in the 3-4. I’ll be keeping an eye on that.

I’m looking to see what Tamba can do against Jake Long – no, scratch that. Tamba hasn’t been impressive against anyone and I wouldn’t think Long would be much different.

I am also looking forward to seeing how the first-teamers do. Playing into the third quarter should give us a good look, especially at the passing game. Hopefully Darling will get a few balls thrown his way so we can see what he is made of.

I want to specifically see how well Herb Taylor does against smaller (and therefore quicker) backers, rushing off the edge in a 3-4. I think if he plays will in this game, and our offense is rolling like it’s shown sparks of in the first two pre-season games, it’s his job to lose. Maybe I’m just being ridiculous, but we haven’t had good LT play since Roaf. I’m snatching the first decent LT we can get our hands on, and keeping his ass there. I haven’t seen Albert play, maybe he’s better, but so far, Herb has definetly impressed, and that goes back clear to last year. Maybe I’m just being a homer on Herbie, since I fell in love with the guys’ play last year, but I still feel like he deserves the chance to stay there until he F’s up big time. And I just don’t see that happening either.

My buddy and I play the new Madden every year. We just finished our first season of the franchise. (SO frickin hard on all-madden with the crappy team they gave us)

The game winning touchdown against the Pats in the playoffs was a goalline situation. Guess what we rammed down their throats? You got it. Cox.
