Savage Saturday

by Chiefs

One of the nice developments of Saturday night’s game was the performance of Dantrell Savage. He made a major statement as a returner and runner. While he may not have made the team, he makes some numbers interesting in the RB and WR categories. It looks like we are going to keep at least three RB’s (LJ, Charles, and Kolby Smith). Battle looks like he is headed for the practice squad or another team. Three out of at least four WR spots are set (D-Bowe, Darling and Franklin). As much as I am rooting for my fellow Mainiac, McMahan, he is headed to the practice squad at best. Since Robinson can’t seem to be healthy enough to practice, he may be headed to IR/PUP whichever category fits his injury. Sams might be on his way out of town.

Right now, it looks like Savage is forcing his way onto the team. So, if we keep him as a forth RB/returner, can we also carry five WR’s? Could it be that Price, Webb and Sippio are competing for one spot? At this point in time, I am favoring Price over Webb and Sippio and keeping Savage as a RB/returner.

OK Addicts, what are you thinking? Anyone want to make a case for keeping four RB’s, five WR’s and only two TE’s?

Wait, I just read the red print on this post. What do you mean two tight ends? Aren't you forgetting Michael Allen and Michael Merritt?

I think Jamaal Charles would make sense being used in a Reggie Bush sort of way, but someone asked Herm about it and he pretty much flat-out denied that they had plans for him like that.

So don't hold your breath.

I also think Charles will be used alot as a receiver, from say, a split back position. We could toss to either side, or dump pass to either side. Defenses wouldn't know where to go, especially with 3 men split out (Tony G. (almost has to be double covered,) D. Bowe (going to wreak havoc this year) and whoever else they feel is best. That formation alone will get us a ton of yards. I'd also like to see a bootleg from splitback, where Charles goes out and chips on a block, then gets past the guy, and subsequently gets a pass for 5-10 yards. I don't know why, but that play has been running in my head for awhile now. I envision it as a possible future staple of our offense; much like the screen was, when we had a great line, and Priestey.

I doubt we'll keep both Cox and Manderino. If anything they'll use Hoyte as the backup, if he's not starting at LB. Cox has shown (at least me) all he needs to show to be our next FB. 30 career rushes, 10 career receptions. He's a blocker. 'Nuff said.

I like Suzy's breakdown too - except I'd have Price in Webb's place if it were up to me... though I suspect she's got it right (Webb!! arrrgh!)

Donovan makes some good points but I think it's possible we keep only 2 TE's if we keep both Cox and Manderino at FB. Having FB's who can also catch & block & play in TE sets is a complete reversal for us... we usually doodit the other way around.

Robinson to PUP, Savage returns. Johnson and Smith are obvious and add Charles as #3. I say Price or Sippio over Webb, but I think Webb will win it.

If Webb makes the team at Price's and Sippio's expense, I will not be happy. The rest of that looks pretty good.

I think that this season we're going to see Charles in recieiving sets a lot more than in running, so he'll in essence be our 5th (or 4th) WR. Savage should make it as the KR/PR.

im not sure wat did he injure?? but iyea i love him on our bootleg plays hes gonna be a huge factor but he needs to be more physical in his blockin but he'll work on that

Anyone know how Brad Cottam is doing after his injury..I didn't get to see the game so I don't know if its serious or not..But I'd say he is gonna be a pretty big factor for us this season..

Yeah I think we keep 5 WR's too..Please put Price before DVD

With what we've seen from the offense, they're going to try to spread the field and will use 4 and 5 WR sets; therefore, we must and will keep 5 WRs. Most Likely Bowe, Darling (damn), Franklin, Price and TBD. The only reason we'll keep 4 RBs is for Savage to return Kickoffs and Punts until Robinson can contest for the job. The Chiefs will also keep 3 TEs if they are using 2 TE sets.
