A Homer's Guide To The Arizona Cardinals: What You Need To Know

by Gameday

(Scott from Raising Zona was nice enough to put this together for us. Go check out his site to get caught up on the Cards. Thanks, Scott!)

Arizona Cardinals (0-1) take the field this weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) on Saturday evening.

What to Watch For: Cardinals QB’s. Coach Ken Whisenhunt still has not announced what the QB rotation will be. I’d look for Kurt Warner to get some playing time this week though after sitting out the New Orleans game last Thursday. As of Thursday, although nothing is official, it is looking like coach Whisenhunt is leaning towards Warner getting the start.

Key Offensive Match-Up: The third receiver spot (fight between Steve Breaston, Lance Long, Jereme Urban, and Early Doucet) vs. the Kansas City secondary. The Cardinals have a good competition going for the third receiver spot, which was vacated by Bryant Johnson, who bolted for less money to play in San Francisco. Breaston and Long have impressed, while Doucet has been hurt during the early weeks of camp.

Key Defensive Match-Up: Cardinals’ secondary vs. Brodie Croyle. This will go one of two ways. Either Croyle will continue to expose a poor pass defense, or the Cardinals will have found a way to keep Croyle and his back-ups in check. Whatever happens, it should be an improvement of the almost 300 yards the Cardinals gave up in the opener against the Saints.

[...] Who do they think they are? [...]

Never said that wasn't the case. I played some RDE in high school--I know the drill. Still, that doesn't change the fact that a modern-day LT must block freaks like Julius Peppers, does it? I just don't think Herb has the size of physical attributes to hang at LT.

Adam, YOU are missing the point.

Why do you think coaches put the better DEs on the right side? I'll tell you. It's because the opposing coaches put they're more talented tackles on the left, to make up for their QB's "blind side". The RDEs being the better DEs is simply to counter that.

You are missing one of the biggest points. It's the difference between blocking Dwight Freeney, Jared Allen and Jason Taylor, and blocking guys like Turk McBride. You just have to be bigger and more physically gifted to block RDEs. Those guys are freaks of nature over there.

There is a fine line between RT and LT, and LT's importance is vastly overstated. It is. The only difference is the so called "blind side" left tackle protects. That's it. It doesn't necessarily take any more skill than RT, so to say that someone is better suited to play RT because they aren't good enough to be a LT is ludicrous (UNLESS they've simply played RT their whole careers and are more used to being on that side).

The key is that we all think he will be of use somewhere, even if it is just as our sixth lineman/utility guy.

His size might be an issue at RT tackle - might be better to slide him inside to RG and then maybe eventually have him replace Waters. I like his versatility - looks like a long-term solution guy not to mention being a pretty decent LT backup to boot.

He just doesn't quite have the tools to be a LT. I do think he can be a very good RT potentially, and I am very encouraged by his progress. Of course, he could very well prove me wrong, but there are very few legitimate LTs out there. There are even fewer who were late-round picks.

I also hope that he takes over for either Adrian or Damion on the right side. It hurts me, because Mac is a K-Stater, but he's been worthless as a Chief so far. Problem is, no matter what Bob Gretz tries to sell us, Adrian Jones is even worse. That guy was an embarrassment during the Chicago game. Pathetic.

Well Herb has played pretty well there so far. I hope he takes Damion McIntosh's job at RT.

I think Adam meant good enough

Adam:

Herb Taylor IS a left tackle. What are you talking about?

Probably not but sounds like he's at least proving himself to be a serviceable lineman. I'm very concerned about D-Mac over on the other side. Maybe Herbie can make the switch when/if the time comes?

I like Herb--but he's not a LT.

At the risk of disappointing all you pessissimists, an encouraging bit of news . . .
