Brodie Is The Next…

by Chiefs

Joe MontanaTom Brady?  Who?  How about the next “Brodie Croyle“?  That’s right, I don’t want any of you homers out there in Chiefs land to get all giddy like a school girl and start running off at the mouth to your buddy who is a Raiders fan or your girlfriend who has a cousin that is a die-hard Donkeys fan about how great Brodie is and how awesome he is going to be.  No, please save it.  At least until, oh I don’t know, how about the regular season.

I have been and continue to be one of the biggest Brodie Croyle supporters ever since he got his first start late last year.  I’ve preached about how it was unfair to judge Brodie until he had a good offensive line in front of him and a healthy LJ lining up behind him.  The line has been overhauled, and LJ is once again healthy and by all accounts has a chip on his shoulder, this time because of some around the league questioning his ability to regain his former abilities.  How did Croyle look in his first preseason game?  Pretty darn good right?  Right.

You see, I do believe Brodie will be a good quarterback in this league, however, I am going to wait until he has a couple games under his belt before I place a crown upon his majesty’s head or throw him to the lions.  Brodie should be judged at the end of the season, not after the first preseason game, not at the “halfway” point, but at the end, no matter when that is. I have saved my ethusiasim for Brodie’s first game because I know the very next preseason game he could look like an awful quarterback.  Then what do I do?  Call for him to be benched?  Wonder a loud why the Chiefs didn’t pursue Chad Pennington harder?  No, I understand there are going to be bad games, I have to deal with that and so do you.

I will stick my neck out on the line by saying this;  Come the end of the year (barring a season ending injury to young Mr. Croyle early on in the year) Brodie will not be the weakest link on the Chiefs team.  I don’t know who or what position will be, but I have faith in Brodie.  No, I won’t call him the next [fill in the blank], hopefully I will be able to say that’s Brodie Croyle.

Other Things…

Chris Williams, first-round pick by the Bears and most likely would have been the starter at left tackle this season, had surgery on a herniated disk and his return is not known.  That would mean the first string LT playing in the preseason game against our beloved Chiefs would have most likely been the 2nd string LT if Williams was healthy.  I wrote all of that to write this: It sure is worrisome Tamba Hali didn’t eat this guy for dinner.  Isn’t it?

Chad Pennington was released after the fiasco known as Brett Favre was signed by the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets last week.  Many thought for sure Chad would land in Kansas City to be reunited with his former coach Herm Edwards.  I have to admit, I was a little surprised he didn’t. Aren’t you?  My guess is Parcells told him he would be given a fair shot to start…this year.  Maybe Herm told him he would have to wait a year behind Croyle and then depending on how Croyle did this season would get a chance to compete next year, and only then it would be a maybe.  If Croyle goes on to have a great year, Chad would have been screwed.

Here’s a good quote from Herm in regard to Glenn Dorsey and Branden Albert.  Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside;

“You’re talking about two players in both our first-round draft picks, they’re a little bit different.
They’re pretty special as far as their ability to pick things up and understand the game of football.
That’s the saving grace with those two guys. Everything I’ve seen out of those two guys is everything we anticipated.”

Looking Ahead…

I am definitely looking forward to the return on Glenn Dorsey.  I not only want to see the man practice again, but I want to see what he can do in the next preseason game. Don’t you?

Obviously, I want to see if Brodie can keep it up.  One of the good things coming out of the Bears game in particularly the drive that ate up a lot of clock in the first quarter, Brodie didn’t throw it to Bowe much if at all. Sorry I can’t say for sure, the “re-air” of the game was on at midnight eastern on the NFL Network and that is waaaaaay past my bedtime anymore.  My point being the Chiefs drove the ball against a legit defense and Croyle wasn’t dependent on Bowe and Gonzalez getting open.  That is great news, I look forward to see if he can keep it rolling as the preseason moves forward.

I’m still not worried, but maybe a little concerned now that no one has stepped up and claimed the left defensive end spot.  Both ends actually are going to have to bring it for the next game or I might have to worry just a little. Tamba in particular seems to be having a rough go at it.

I have a better idea. Just trade your whole Chiefs team to Dallas for Tony Romo, surround him with a bunch of convicts and watch the wins come rolling in. By the way you are such a Chiefs homer.

I think it is still too early to tell about Brodie...the only good games I remember him having have all been against Tampa Two teams that he has experience and knowledge of...I think he needs to experience alot more to tell, the Patriots exotic defense will likely blow his mind...

As a card carrying Brodie Croyle detractor, I will say this. He didn't look entirely horrible in the first pre-season game.

Good post Stephen. Brodie is off to a decent start. Let's see how he grows. I am not as sold on the D line, let's see how that shapes up over preseason.

I don't see Herm and Co giving up on Brodie unless he absolutely bombs. I do think we bring in someone else next year but their skill level will depend on how competent Brodie shows he can be this season.

We might go with him again, but we will bring in someone else as insurance. Especially with Thiggy not impressing anybody so far.

Question?

What happens if Brodie plays like an average QB, or a slightly average QB this year?

Do we go with him again, or do we bring on somebody else?

How about David Garrard? Strong-armed QB who can move a little bit and DOESN'T throw interceptions. Perfect for a ball control offense, and his development has made the Jags true contenders. Maybe Jamaal Charles can even play MJD?

It's certainly not unrealistic. But I don't think anyone can say with total confidence that he will for sure.

I think he COULD put up big numbers and be a great QB, but I'm not gonna call him the next ______________.

Tony Romo is the next Brett Favre though. I will say that.

Brodie Croyle is the next...Carson Palmer?

I think they have a lot of similarities. Palmer, although a much higher touted draft pick, did not start right away and played behind Jon Kitna his first season. When he took over the starting job in his second year he was mediocre. he led the Bengals to an 8-8 record (same as the previous season) and had 18 touchdowns to go along with 18 interceptions.

Palmer's third season (second as a starter) was his breakout year and he has been a valuable quarterback since. He has great receivers in Chad Johnson and TJ. Rudi Johnson provided a good running attack up until a couple of years ago too.

Palmer and Brodie both have that 'gun slinger' attitude about them. Bowe and Tony G are very competent receivers and LJ provides a better rushing attach than Rudi Johnson ever did.

I'd certainly be happy with Carson-Palmer-like leadership and numbers. Do you think it is unrealistic to expect this from Brodie in a couple of years?

- Croyle was, I believe, 1/3 passing to Bowe. So he did target him, they just didn't connect much. No worries, because it's not like they were in the game together for that long.

- Our defensive line did worry me, but I'm reserving judgment until I see what exactly Glenn Dorsey brings to the table. I'm looking for him to be just as much of a guy for offenses to worry about (thus taking the attention off the ends) as a guy that actually gets to the QB a lot. We'll see.

- I'm excited about, and nervous for, Brodie. Can't wait to see what happens this season.

Not too worried about the Hali at this point considering the fact that he'll have Dorsey to his left and DJ over his right shoulder. My sense is that one of the ways that Gunther intends to compensate for Allen's departure is to send in DJ a lot more just like he did with DT. Of course we probably won't see anything like that happening until the regular season.
