A.A.D.Q.: Which Receivers Should Make The Squad?

by Chiefs

After basically every Chiefs‘ receiver except our current starting two made a catch against the Bears, the wideout situation is as muddled as ever–and that’s a good thing. That being said, which receivers do you think should make the team? Devard Darling, Dwayne Bowe and Will Franklin are locks. After that, I’d say that Bobby Sippio and Maurice Price should make the team. I’m not a big Jeff Webb fan, but I’d be fine with him if it didn’t cost Price or Sippio a spot.

Go ahead, Addicts, let us hear it. What recievers should make the final roster?

Can we get something/anything for Webb?

Indeed we are all fiery. Think of all the AA fans/readers/commentors as Taco Bell sauce packets. You have your Mild's, then the general Chiefs fan population of Hot's. Then you've got your mamajamas, the Fire's. We all have varying degrees of (sometimes fanatical) fandom, but in the end, just as in Taco Bell, we are all from the same tray. And, also just like the sauce packets from Taco Bell, if anyone messes with a single one of us, be it Mild, Hot, or Fire; we will make their ass burn. (Pun intended.) Booyah. Oh my God either I'm a master of analogies, or I need sleep, badly.

Adam: Matt Millin! LMAO!!! Trust you to move to the only county in Tejas that didn't go for Shrub in ANY election ever - including his two terms as Gov. :P

Again, part of the point is that we don't necessarily trust the Chiefs' depth chart. And I don't think anyone is really angry. If anyone came across that way, I'm sure they are sorry. Again, this is a fiery bunch of fans. Sometimes things get a little hot, but at the end of the day it is all love, peace and chicken grease.

I wouldn't confuse heated, spirited debate with hatred. We're all Chiefs fans here, but the debates are what A.A. is built on. Passion, passion, passion...at the end of the day I'd love to tailgate or talk Chiefs with any Chiefs fan out there (well, besides the Chiefs Space Mafia goomba that used to troll our site). But we don't always have to agree. What kind of fun would A.A. be. I know I'm about as opinionated as they come, and I encourage others to be the same. Riding the fence is for wimps. Also, this site was built so that fans could have a voice, especially when we feel the brass is messing up, which they often have.

Sipp played well in last year's preseason as well, and made some awesome blocks during the regular season, although he never got targeted once :(

And I guess we're just different, because I don't trust E.R. docs (and my old man is a doc), I don't fully trust the Chiefs' brain trust, and I DEFINITELY don't trust our President. Maybe I have a problem with authority, but I don't do the blind faith thing. I'm from the Show-Me State--show me and then I'll trust in you.

And just because you run an NFL team doesn't make you a good GM either. Two words: Matt Millen

All I'm saying, I guess, is stop directing anger at those of us who disagree. So Merlin, DJ, and I don't think Sippio is a sure-fire starter. Whatever. So ya'll do. Whatever. All we can do is look at the facts, and the facts are that he's listed 3rd on the unofficial depth chart on the Chiefs page.

Love, peace, and chicken grease.

There's a lot of hatred directed to those of us who aren't in love with Sippio, a guy who's apparently proven himself (in 1 preseason game). Let's boil this down to the most basic element -- The Chiefs want to win. (Surprise) The are going to put the best team they possible can on the field. (Surprise) Some people who get on the field (a la Webb) aren't always the best in the NFL, but they might be the best we have at that moment. Some people who don't get on the field are occasionally better than those on the field. However, we're all bloggers, Chiefs fans, and generally people who aren't pouring over film of these professionals AS OUR JOBS. Maybe the talent evaluation of Herm, Carl, etc isn't 100% perfect, but I trust them, guys whose careers depend on it, the same way I'd trust a president or an emergency room doctor. Maybe they don't always make what seem like the best decisions to us, but they're the ones whose lives are built around this.

Just because you can win a Super Bowl and build a good franchise in Madden, or worse, fantasy football, doesn't make you a GM.

I think Webb will be cut unless we use him as a returner

I don't think I've referred back to that ONE play more than once or twice. And Darling looked downright explosive at times last year. Dude had three touchdowns in limited snaps. It's a different story altogether.

Adam:

You are NOT fair with Webb. He's not been specacular, but then again he hasn't played much. Neither has Darling. He has, however, been solid. You always refer back to this ONE play where he didn't get both feet in, and it's simply unfair to write off a player based on one mistake.

DJ:

Please keep in mind that Sippio is one of the greatest receivers in the history of the Arena Football league. He does deserve to at least get some playing time this year.

DJ/Suzy:

Not a single person on this site has said Sippio deserves to start for the Chiefs. All ANY of us have said is he deserves a chance to prove himself against top notch competition - and if the issues surrounding him are determined without giving him that shot, we will trust the coaching staff even less than we do now.

All any of us want is to see him get a legitimate opportunity to show us his real skills. What's the matter? Are the rest of you so determined to have your opinions validated you're afraid to give him that chance?

And tell me this: You say Price has some skills but he played at the same time Sippio did against the same competition. How can you say Price has skills Sippio does not when Sippio clearly outplayed Price against the same competition? Your logic is circular to serve an opinion you already hold. I dont KNOW if Sippio can hang with the big dawgs. I just want him to get a chance to show us if he can.

D.J.,

Honestly, I don't trust the Chiefs when it comes to player evaluation. This is the same team that drafted Eddie Freeman, Kris Wilson, Junior Siavii, Ryan Simms, etc...early in the draft. This is the same team that spent a fortune on Kendrell Bell and Napoleon Harris. This is the same team the wasted four years on Sammie Parker when I wouldn't have wasted four days on him. I could go on and on all day long. I'm not saying that I'm better at their job than they are. I'm just saying many of us Chiefs fans know our football, while the Chiefs are somewhat prone to personnel blunders.

Here here, DJ.

Regarding Webb and the other receivers.

Webb hasn't shown us anything great in previous years, but this is his 3rd year when most receivers finally get it. He played as well as anyone Thursday night and the reports from training camp is that he is much improved. Fans need to allow for players to develop instead of holding rookie mistakes against them their entire career.

Webb never stood a chance with the fans from day one because he was scouted by Herm and people that don't like Herm instantly hold that against him as indicated by your "Webb’s like the coaches kid who starts in high school but shouldn’t be out there" comment. News flash: Webb has never started. He's been the 3rd or 4th string WR on the squad and I would argue that he is better than than the 2nd string WRs we had on this team all through the Vermeil era.

However, Price has some skills as well and is said to be pretty fast. I see this as the only real WR battle left in camp and I suspect we are going to see a lot more of these two in upcoming games.

May the best man win. Sorry, Sippio isn't the best man.

Adam

I hate Adam Teicher. He makes up every story that he publishes and even when the coaches contradict what he has said, continues to pretend that its a fact (just look at the Donnie Edwards to MLB story he keeps repeating).

I don't have anything against Sippio. He does have some skills and great hands. But there is a reason the coaches never put him out running a route last year. There is a reason they are running him in the 4th quarter of preseason games with the other future arena league players. What he does against guys that won't even be in the NFL in a month does not impress me any more than what Thigpen did.

What is it that Sippio fans see that every other coach and scout in the NFL doesn't see? They have worked out with the guy and watched hours more tape on him than any Sippio fan ever has and have a much better clue about what an actual good player looks like and none of them are impressed with Sippio enough to put him on their team.

The guy is 27 years old and has been available for teams to pick up for some time now but has never been used for anything other than practice fodder. It's Casey Printers all over again and its the same fans that thought Casey Printers could be an NFL QB that like Sippio. That leads me to believe that these people are making a celebrity of a guy with limited abilities because of the underdog factor. That is not the way to build a succesful team.

No, he won't be cut. I totally realize that. I just think that he should. He's Herm's personal salvation project, and that's why he's still here. I am still embarrassed, however, that Parker and Webb were our No. 2 and 3 receivers last year.

Webb won't be cut. He hasn't been stellar, but I think that he'll stay because of seniority. You can't easily go from top 3 to cut. It's unfair, but it's true, and I'll take anyone' $ on it.

DJ, are you Teicher's other co-chair for the Hell No To Sippio Club? I'm just playing with you and Merlin, but I don't see how you guys aren't at least a little impressed by the guy.

Don't forget, he also had a J.V. QB throwing to him, and a J.V. line blocking for him.

And if he's dominating like that against the third-stringers, that's proof that he needs a shot against better competition.

I'm not a Webb fan, and I'm sick of us keeping return guys who aren't receivers. Zach and I both agree on that one. Unless it's a dynamic return man, it's a wasted roster spot.

I do like Price, though. If Herm doesn't play favorites, there is no way Webb beats him out. I don't think Webb is better than Price, Sipp, Will or DVD, personally.

Webb hasn't earned his arrowhead, yet some Chiefs fans defend him practically to the death. Has Sippio? No, but he hasn't gotten a freakin' chance to either. Webb's like the coaches kid who starts in high school but shouldn't be out there. I really feel that way.

Robinson is no lock despite the way Samms looked thursday. Robinson is still on the PUP and you cant make the team from there. If Samms isn't cutting it, they will look to the WR's for a solution.

They are not going to keep 6 WRs and the return man will count as a WR. We have much better depth at RB and they have already said they don't have room for 4 RBs, so there's no way they are keeping 6 WRs.

The way Samms looked Thursday, it sounds like Robinson will be a lock at the return position, so they will only carry 4 other WRs.

1. Bowe
2. Darling
3. Franklin
4. Webb or Price (probably battle the rest of preseason)

Sorry, Sippio catching 3 passes against guys that won't even make Chicagos team late in the 4th quarter of the first preseason game does not impress me.

I'm breaking them down by jobs vice 1 thru 5: i.e. WR1, WR2 (starts opposite WR1) and Slot. Here's my depth chart for all three jobs:

WR2 Slot WR1
Darling Franklin Bowe
Webb Sippio Price
Price Webb Sippio

I dont think Robinson is really in the picture except as a return man, particularly with his injury. And if he goes to the PUP, then I think we keep 5 on the active roster and the 6th becomes the return man. Of the six on my list, the three with the best speed to handle returns are Darling, Webb, and Price. In that case, I suspect Price to be the return guy.

I think the reason Darling is the presumptive nominee at the WR2 job because Bowe is not that fleet of foot. We need a WR on the opposite side in our standard sets with speed enough to worry the D about the deep routes. I think Franklin IS in fact fast enough to do that as well as Darling, but they dont want to put that on him as a rookie.

This put Franklin in the slot and I suspect he's won the starting job there already. Slot receivers are typically highly reliable tough guys who will hang onto the ball when GawdAlmighty is taking them down, and Sippio is that kind of possesion receiver. In fact, I would go so far as to call him the quintessential possession receiver.

I dont know why Herm loves Webb but it's obvious so we might as well deal with it. Webb is making the team. And while I'm not enamoured with the guy, he is a good hedge against injury to Darling.

All of this is contingent on Darling actually BEING the talent the coaching staff is convinced he is. I for one would like to see some actual evidence of Darling's talent in the next game against the Cardinals.

1. Dwayne Bowe
2. Devard Darling
3. Will Franklin
4. Bobby Sippio
5. Maurice Price

Last year Jason King had a short article dated September 13 about Sippio in the sports section, which I found cached and you can by Googling. I wrote Jason, and we exchanged 3 or 4 emails, and I will paraphrase what he said since I cannot remember every word.

I questioned him why Sippio was not playing. Jason wrote back and the essence of his reply was this. He said he had attended every practice session and game, and watched the wide receivers closely. He stated it was "clearly obvious" that Sippio had more talent and ability than any receiver we had in camp, and he simply could not figure why he wasn't receiving more playing time. However, his one drawback is he was also the slowest receiver on the field. That appeared to be his "only" drawback. He also stated, "I believe they are going to play the ones they have more invested in than a free agent."

That said, there are still a few games left for Sippio to prove his worth if he gets the chance. I place more faith in King's observations than Theicher's. At the very least it appears the staff is giving Bobby a long look. BTW, he had 3 passes for 57 yards to lead the receivers.

The third-string factor goes both ways with Sippio. He was also playing with a QB who played terribly, and an offensive line that couldn't block four of us Addicts. I would just like to see Bobby get some first half burn. He's been great in all the action he's seen so far, doesn't he deserve a shot?

I still think Darling will win the No. 2 job. I think Price could be a dark horse either there or in the slot, because I believe the coaches are looking for a receiver to stretch the field opposite Bowe. I also think that is having an effect on Sippio's playing time. All those other guys are pretty much burners, and he's a possession-type, like Bowe.

Is everyone rating Darling as #2 because of what we're hearing from camp..From what I've seen and heard no one really has any info on the guy..Everything we know about him is hear say..He's gonna have to show up in these pre season games because I was impressed with franklin, price, and sippio..Webb didn't do bad..He's only a third year guy..Last year was really his rookie year..He still has a lot of upside.

Dwayne Bowe
Will Franklin
Jeff Webb
Devard Darling
Maurice Price
Kevin Robinson (PUP)

I think it's funny that people are ranking a rookie wide receiver, who hasn't even taken one regular season snap, and hasn't been discussed as the leading candidate for the number 2 receiver spot by any coaches, above guys like Webb and Darling. Darling is going to be the no. 2 receiver. I have absolutely no doubt. I haven't heard anything differently throughout camp to make me think differently. I think Adam hit it on the head when he said that Darling didn't do anything in the Chicago game for a reason, because the team has a lot of faith in him being the guy at the no. 2 spot. I think Franklin and Webb will both be impact guys as a no. 3, with some no. 2 snaps. I think all the Sippio talk is a little ridiculous, he caught a TD, with the third team squad, he is gonna be the odd man out. They will keep Price, and he will make a few plays.

I like to think that my order is a little more realistic:

Bowe
Darling
Webb
Franklin
Price

I think Webb and Franklin could go either way, but Darling will lock up the 2 spot.

It will be heartbreak hotel. Just go read my new post about him above this.

Their is going to be lots of pain in AA land when Sippio gets cut.

Judging by what I've seen out of each of these guys (which in some cases, isn't alot) I'd rank them so far, like this:

1. Bowe (duh).
2. Franklin (Bowe produced as a rookie, and he looks good.
3. Price (A tallish receiver who has good hands, if he can get more experience we have a legitimate 3rd option)
4. Sippio (GREAT hands, so-so speed. A good red zone target.)
5. Darling (He never impressed me much in Baltimore, but then again, he had Boller throwing the pigskin, Randy Moss wouldn't look good either.)

1. Bowe
2. Darling
3. Franklin
4. Price
5. Webb or Robinson

They DID look big though. Especially Franklin, which surprised me because I saw him play a lot for Mizzou. Watch out for Price! This guy is a major sleeper! He should've dragged both feet, but still. I like this guy a lot!

1. Bowe
2. Darling (jury's still out though)
3. Franklin
4. Price
5. Sippio

Well I just looked it up. Franklin and Price are listed as 6'0 and 6'1 respectively. Shorter than I thought.

I guess maybe they just PLAYED big :) .

yes i did thats a huge!! fetish for herm he likes big tall physical recievers.......i really like franklins size im not sure if he has speed to work the slot cause i never seen him actually gets yac but i think he will be a good slot receiver for us

Yeah, Darling didn't make any catches, but he wasn't thrown to either.

Let's see..

1. Dwayne Bowe
2. Devard Darling
3. Bobby Sippio
4. Will Franklin
5. Maurice Price

Franklin is ranked so low for me because he's a rookie. They're talking about working him at the slot position a lot, so I don't really think it's gonna matter much where he is on the depth chart this year.

QUESTION TO ALL ADDICTS:

Did anyone else notice how tall ALL of our receivers look? We already knew Bowe and Sippio had good size, but Franklin and Price both looked HUGE.

was it just me or was darling invisible the other night against da bears? i dont remember hearing his name!!
