This is a different situation. It's similar to the Ravens, who basically have three young guys, because Kyle Boeller is still young. If you're not going to win now, and the guy isn't going to be your long-term QB, and you don't have a long-term QB, at least finalized yet...what good is it to keep him around? Especially at his price tag. And guys like Leftwich and Simms have leadership ability. Damon just doesn't make sense--we got rid of all the other vets except for basically Chiefs HoFers (Tony, Will and Donnie), so why does Huard get to stick around? Pat Surtain is still here because we'd lose so much money if we cut him, and he can mentor the young guys.

I don't realistically think that either. But it solidifies my point, eh? You keep a veteran backup around for when your starter goes down, and you need an experienced hand guiding your ship. To go with 3 guys that all have less than 3-4 years of experience, is pretty whack. You talked about leadership and Brodie maybe not having it; how is the team going to be led by a 2nd/3rd string rookie/2nd year man? There's a reason veteran QB's are the consensus backups in the league.

I am looking at it objectively. What's not objective is thinking we have a realistic chance to win seven of our first ten. I honestly don't think the playoffs are a realistic possibility, so I don't see any practical reason to keep Damon around. If we win seven out of 10 I'll eat some serious crow and admit it.

Adam, you're not looking at it objectively. Obviously we aren't looking to make Huard our starter as we rebuild. What are veteran backups used for? For when the starter gets injured and cannot play. If Brodie is on a hot streak, and we win 7 out of our first 10 games, who would you rather have under center, to try and make the playoffs... Damon Huard, or unproven/unknown/young man X? I'll take Damon, thank you very much. And to be honest, the old dog still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Did you see his ducking of the clothes-line that was coming his way, right after he was rattled by a tough, loss of big yardage sack? It reminded me of Remember the Titans, where Sunshine owned the opposing team with his Tai Chi (or whatever it was, I can't remember now.) Admit it, it was sweet. And then not only did he avoid the sack, he completed a nice pass to Cottam. It was a good play, and it was ALL Damon Huard, that DE wasn't TOUCHED by any of our blockers. He's a compitent backup, that's what we pay him for. I'm happy with him there. Even if he is a geezer with statue-esque legs.

Like I said, I wasn't sure whether or not he got sacked. But like CMZ said, better a sack than an INT. He also complete 75% of his passes and tossed a TD. And they were good passes too, not ones where the receiver was bailing him out. I'm totally cool with Huard being our backup.

Zach made a great point yesterday when he asked me if Leftwich, Pennington or Simms could take the Chiefs to a Super Bowl in the future. I said, take maybe, lead possibly, and carry no. I'd put Brodie in the same boat. Huard wouldn't do any of the three, nor would he be around. If our true goal is to make the Super Bowl three years from now, then Damon Huard is a ginormous waste of resources. All that matters this year is that we compete and develop our future core.

It's not his job to be our starter man... it's his job to keep us from going completely to shit if the starter goes down. The QB is not going to be the reason this team wins week in and week out - at least not this year. At least Huard is good enough to keep defenses honest so they cant pull that 8 in a box crap on our RB's.

It's pretty clear from watching Chan Gaileys offense last night that the Chiefs were not REALLY a 12 loss team in terms of talent last year. Now that we've got him calling the plays, Huard will be plenty good enough if Brodie goes down.

The only reason Thigpen is second on the depth chart right now is so they can get him maximum playing time in the preseason games/practices. They know what they have in Huard, and they dont need to develope Huard like they do Thiggy.

I liked Printers too, but I think he worried Herm with his inclination to scramble and that's why he's gone. At least Herm kept Sippio!
