A.A.D.Q.: King Carl – Dark Knight Or Joker?

Posted by: Adam Best

As many of our long-time readers know, I’m a huge Batman fan. After all, my name is only one letter off from being the exact same as TV’s Batman, Adam West. Coincidence? I think not. Anyway, The Dark Knight drops today, and fans are salivating over it like ESPN does Brett Favre. If you’re a Batman fan, be sure to check out my latest piece over at the Fan-Sided Blogs main site, where I cast the NFL’s wrong-doers, wackjobs and weirdos as Batman’s rogues gallery of supervillains.

That leads us to our Batman-inspired daily question: Is Chiefs GM Carl Peterson a misunderstood hometown hero or a public enemy who needs to have his free pass revoked? Is he the Crown Prince of Cheap? Or the Chiefs Crusader? I say a little bit of each, so maybe Two-Face is the best comparison? I’d hate to think that King Carl does a coin flip to decide his draft picks, but earlier this decade it couldn’t have been any worse even if he did.

You make the call on Carl–Dark Knight or Joker?

            BallHype: hype it up!

Not everybody at once. Are all you guys already waiting in line for midnight shows or what? :)

I’d have to agree with you on the Two-Face comparison. Everyone wants Carl on the first train out of town, but on the other hand, he did bring playoff football to KC in the 90’s … tough call. I’ll make my decision after the “youth movement” project …

Rich Gannon & Neil Smith – any questions?

I do respect and appreciate what he did during the Marty Schottenheimer era but just like Marty, his time has come and gone. We need a new approach and it’s not all just about CP. For example, one thing I’d love to see is a more active ownership be in terms of holding management accountable for the long dry spell with playoff/championship wins, PR gaffs, and the overall shitty approach to player relations.

Anyway back to my original comment, I doubt I’ll ever get over the way time and time again he has allowed popular, talented players to not just leave the team but in fact help division rivals win championships. Oh the pain!

  4. 4. SEANBCOOL Says:

What it comes down to is that no matter who the General Manager of the Chiefs is, fans will turn on him the moment he makes a decision they don’t agree with. I don’t think Carl Peterson is “evil” at all. How could I say that about the man who brought us Larry Johnson?

It’s a pretty tough job, what CP does, and I think people just need to chill out and let him do it.

    CHIEFS RELEASE SAFETY GREG WESLEY
Posted by Mike Tunison on July 17, 2008, 3:40 p.m.
League sources have told Pro Football Talk that the Kansas City Chiefs have released free safety Greg Wesley.

The 9th year safety, who has played his entire career to this point with the Chiefs, appeared in 15 games last season, started one and made 30 tackles. The Chiefs’ 3rd round pick in 2000 has 29 career interceptions.

Wesley, who is repped by Drew Rosenhaus, is expected to receive interest from a number of teams in the free agent market.

  6. 6. Adam Says:

My God yes! You can definitely expect a bon voyage post dedicated to G-Wes the Whiffer soon. Good riddance! Thanks, Jeremy.

  7. 7. juices-flowing Says:

SEANBCOOL makes an excellent point. I remember when people were like “WTF!!!” when they drafted LJ, and now look … but my point is, the GM of any team doesn’t make the plays on the field, or the play calls. I was mad as hell at Mike Solari last year, not Carl Peterson. The coaches are responsible as much as the players, and management. It’s easy to vilify one person for the entire franchise.

  8. 8. Zach Says:

Carl does a great job on the business side of things. I have some issues with him, but if I were the Hunts I would be very very pleased.

  9. 9. CurtMerzFan Says:

Whew! I AM surprized at the level of love CP gets from the Addict Crew!! And I could not agree more. Being GM of a NFL team in a small market has got to be one of, if not, THE toughest mgmt job in all of sports.

I’m always amazed at the posts from CP haters on those evil not to be named other sites on the web. It’s pretty clear none of those guys remember the wasteland of teams between Superbowl IV and Martyball, but I sure as hell do and I have to say I’m grateful for what the Chiefs have been and will become during CP’s tenure.

Also, except for the very beginning with Marty, this is really the first time Carl has been the GM for such a vast youth rebuilding effort. It’s also the first time they’ve really had a QB from the draft who even has an inkling of the talent it takes to become a franchise QB. Of course, after the Todd Blackledge incident – who can blame him for being gunshy? I really think we need to have a little bit more wait and see if not outright faith in Carl’s ability. He is the longest serving GM in the NFL, and I suspect he still has a move or two left in him. Personally, I dont want him going ANYWHERE until he hires and trains his own replacement.

Does he do things I do NOT understand and irritate the bejesus out of me? Of course he does. Neil Smith – man was I fuming!! But now that we have AA and Zach’s incredible artistic skills… I have to say we poke a little fun at him and dress him up like Cat Woman or Poisen Ivy. LOL

  10. 10. Zach Says:

Lets get one thing straight, I don’t love CP. If anyone has ever read my comments or posts they would know that. I just said the guy is a good businessman and if I WERE the Hunts then I would love him.

CP has a ton of mistakes and I do believe he has had long enough to prove his worth to the fans.

  11. 11. Zach Says:

Thanks for the compliment though. Not sure if they are INCREDIBLE, lol

so Zach… no montage of Carl’s head on Michelle Pfieffer’s cat leather?

  14. 14. doc Says:

I didn’t see this posted anywhere and I wanted to make sure that everybody saw the chiefs signed Robinson and Johnston.

Chiefs | Page to be starting safety
    Fri, 18 Jul 2008 10:45:57 -0700

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs FS Jarrad Page will be one of the team’s starting safeties this year.

all is coming together well so far

  16. 16. Double D Says:

Huh? If McGraw and Morgan are both going to back up Pollard at SS, then who will be Page’s back up? I thought Morgan was supposed to come in as a FS? That’s what he played in college anyway . . .

  17. 17. Zach Says:

I am sure one of those is wrong because someone has to backup Paige :)

Morgan is actually athletic enough to play either spot. McGraw actually played FS in college and could play either spot with his “smarts”

  18. 18. Adam Says:

Remember, Morgan also played CB in nickel and dime situations in college. There are a lot of ways we could use him.

Thanks for the news links guys. Always feel free to post those updates. As far as us and the news, we typically don’t break it so we usually wait and post until we have the time to sit down and put our spin on it.
