Curse? Chiefs Not Looking Good For Madden '09

Between rating Brodie Croyle (78) as the worst starting quarterback in the NFL, and making only two teams worse than the Chiefs (the Dolphins and Falcons), I think it’s safe to say that the Madden folks over at EA Sports don’t expect the Red and Gold to make much of a splash this year. It is good, however, to see that Dwayne Bowe is a 90, while Glenn Dorsey is an instant 84. Page and Pollard–at this point they are a group, like Page and Plant–too. Typically, our youngs get hosed.

Brian:

It's not a matter of stats through six games. It's a matter of stats through the FIRST six games. And by the way, stats do matter with quarterbacks. They play every offensive snap, they always get the ball, and they control what they do with it. All a quarterback does more than 90% of the time is drop back in the pocket and throw stats (excluding run plays...). Also, one could argue that a QBs stats are a direct result of his decision making.

And I'm not even saying he's going to be a good NFL QB. All I'm saying is that you have no CLUE whether or not he'll be successful. But I feel like if the head coach and offensive coordinator are both praising Brodie's skills and talking about how they have no doubt he can be a good QB, then he can. And I tend to trust successful NFL employees more than guys leaving blog comments.

One thing that doesn't show up in stats, decision-making, is pretty important, and I haven't seen good decision making from him when it mattered.

I think looking at numbers when you talk about a qb is the worst argument for or against their skill or lack thereof. Numbers mean nothing, kind of like college and high school greatness mean nothing. That article is absolute junk, I'm sure if I dug a little I could find over a 100 qbs with better numbers through six games than all those guys. I'm not saying that Croyle sucks, but the logic behind that article is just ridiculous.

SEANBCOOL:
You beat me to the punch. I just got done reading that article before I came over here. It sure does give you a breath of fresh air, especially for a guy that's been on the Brodie bandwagon.

I think that he put up those numbers on a much worse team than what Elway, Aikman, and Manning x 2 had.

MasterBlaster:

Please refer to the article on Croyle, "Six Games In" on kcchiefs.com, and then tell me why exactly he sucks.

Is it the records he broke in high school and college? Or the fact that he has better stats in his first 6 starts than Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman, and John Elway did?

Brodie Croyle doesn't "suck". He just hasn't proved anything at the pro level thus far.

Croyle sucks. What QB stat did Quinn, Brohmm, Flacco, Ryan, Woodson get?

Yeah I always turn the gay vision cone thing off.

Thank God they got rid of the vision cone for passing, Chiefs fans got lucky the year it came out, because Trent Green had a 90+ in awareness, so you could see the whole field, Brodie's vision cone wouldn't be big enough to see anything, I think the only ratings that really make a big difference are at receiver and running back, you can really tell a difference between crap and quality in those two positions, and we're set at those two.

Turk McBride might want to take a look at his ranking and get fired up!

Does anybody ever get updated rosters online?

I was wondering if they have them for X-Box 360 and if they are any good?

Plus, Tamba was hurt much of the year. I am hoping he is healthier this year.

Tamba suffered from not compiling big stats last year. He was much better than his stats reflected, and I expect him to get at least 10 sacks this year, if not more. He'll be a 90 next year.

i cant believe Tamba is only an 86! how the hell did Pollard get an 87, while Tamba has an 86! ...pollard hasnt done anything on defense, hes a great special teamer, but for Hali who has consistently been a good player these last two years to only have an 86 is terrible. Hali should have a 89 or 90 IMO. and why is Oliver Hoyte still our FB? havent they ever heard of a guy named Mike Cox? Cox has a better chance of making the team than Hoyte does. especially since Cox came from GT.

but hey thats why they made it possible to change players rating and stuff, so its not a real big deal.

Projecting Brodie at this point is a shot in the dark. I like him. I think he has the talent to succeed in the NFL. However, I am still worried about that O-line and I will continue to worry until I see/hear enough good things about their play.

i might agree that a 78 for croyle is fair, but what im saying is does he actually have to be the worst starting QB in the game. Shouldnt it be rex grossman or kyle orton-whoever is the starter, or maybe even kyle boller or joe flacco

Hmmm...good points on both Brodie and Page/Pollard.

Same thing for me on Madden. I love defense. I'll smash people all day long.

On offense I'm pretty good at RB, but you put me at QB and things start to get ugly. I'll go all Jake Plummer on your ass...

As for Brodie, no matter who's fault it is, he hasn't proven jack. A 78 is fair. Dorsey was way more dominant than Brodie ever was in college, too.

My favorite position is defensive end. I also like playing safety, blitzing, center field. Then again, I even like playing corner sometimes, or bringing my dime or nickel backs. I like getting after the quarterback. Zach plays "O" and I play "D" when we do our joint franchise over the Holidays or whenever. This year we tried switching it up and it didn't work so well. I'm unbelievable at defense, but I tend to throw picks on offense, force things, turn it over.

As for Pollard, a strong safety must be a strong tackler. He is. A free safety needs to be rangy, good in coverage. Page is a little slow for me, and his tackling was down right pathetic sometimes. I think they are too slow to play together as a pair. Hence the drafting of The Torpedo.

While we're on the subject of Madden - what's your favorite player/position to play on defense?

Mine is MLB. Eventually I got Naps so beefed up that he was causing fumbles damn near every time I used the hit stick!

Also, I agree about Pollard and Page. The big difference that I've noticed is that Pollard seems to be a much better tackler.

I think both will make good strides this season and adding Morgan to the mix will only help.

Adam, it could be that I'm just an overly positive person, but I have high expectations from Croyle this year. I really think he'll shine.

It's pointless to debate the issue, but I do think he got shafted with his 78 rating. Given the circumstances of last year, he couldn't prove anything - one way or another. Although our offense was one of the worst in the league, he definitely didn't PROVE himself to be the worst QB in the league. Hell, they gave Dorsey an 84 without playing a snap! (Not that he probably won't deserve it)

I do like the credit given to Bowe and especially Gonzo. Madden is notorious for brutally dropping ratings of players over 30. I expected TG to be in the 80's this year.

Regardless, I'll have to re-do the roster before playing. I'm sure it won't be accurate by the time the season starts, given all the change going on this year. Ought to be a fun pre-season!

An 83 for Donnie Edwards is ludicrous.

The 78 for Croyle is generous at this point, considering he's NEVER WON A GAME. (and before anyone jumps on me about being a Brodie hater, I'm not. I'm also a Bama fan so I followed him in college as well. I just about wet my pants when the Chiefs drafted him and I want him to succeed more than anyone else on the roster.)

And yes, Pollard is better than Page. He was drafted 5 rounds higher, started earlier, and plays more consistently than Page. I think the only reason a lot of Chiefs fans want to say Page is better is because he makes big plays against the Raiders.

I know Donnie has slipped due to age, but 83? that's harsh. Could it be that he is paying for the O-line collapse of last year? Pat Surtain doesn't seem to be paying for it. Oh, and speaking of O-line.... run left, run left....... and run left.

The thing to do is to run a franchise, sim out the first year and draft a top ten QB with the draft files. Then D-Bo will be a monster. That would be fun. And playing with Dorsey on the other end. Sounds good to me.

Scott,

I'm not sure the curse could even make things any worse for Brodie. I'm definitely a glass-half-empty guy when it comes to B.C.

Taylor,

I agree with all of your points, except Croyle and Pollard. Croyle has shown us next to nothing, and, as I always say, Pollard is better than Page. Few Chiefs fans agree with that, but to me it is obvious. He may not make as many big plays, but he is a much better tackler and way more consistent.

83 is awful low for Donnie!

MY RANDOM THOUGHTS ON THE NEWS

its stupid that brodie croyle is the worst starter on the game- it should be one of the bears QBs, dolphins QBs, or ravens QBs

why does it say herb taylor is our RG when adrian jones is 2 points better and working with the 1st team offense in the OTAs

does it really say that kolby smith is rated a 98 as a 3rd down back

damn-boone is our LE and johnston isnt even on the depth chart

i cant believe donnie edwards is only a 83

bernard pollard got an 87-seems a lil high to me

Wow... Page and Pollard are ranked higher than I expected. And Harris must be really crying about Madden putting him behing Edwards already.

Wow. No love from Madden at all. That's fine. It'll make it more of a challenge.

Me and my buddy have destroyed 08 completely - 8 or 9 seasons (co-op) straight on All-Madden without a loss.

We were winning by so much we had to come up with ways to make it more challenging: turn the computer stats up, kick with your eyes closed, no passes over 15 yds, etc.

As far as the Madden Curse, thank God Croyle isn't on the cover. I bet Favre's stats are going to suck this year!
