Open Thread: Draft Wind-Up

by Draft

King Carl (Kansas City Chiefs)

I’m out until later tonight when I chime back in with my Chiefs‘ Day Two grades and recap. Three things:

  • A.) Until then, I’m opening up this open thread for Chiefs fans to sound off on King Carl and this draft haul.
  • B.) I’m off for vacation tomorrow for a couple weeks, and won’t be checking in much. Zach will be back soon, and the rest of the staff will be around some as well. This is my first vacay during my one year plus at A.A., and I figure post draft is the time to take it. With the dead period I can come back fired up and better than ever for the 2008 season :)
  • During this period we will be running “Fan Weeks,” a period where we will be inviting you the fan to chime in with your thoughts. All you have to do is send your thoughts to [email protected] with the name/alias you want to post under, and I’ll post them once every day or so. I’m not into censorship at all, but keep it responsible. Also, bring your “A” game. Prove that Chiefs fans are literate (unlike new Broncos OT Ryan Clady!) and the most knowledgeable lot in the league!

How does everybody feel about the draft with things winding down on Day Two?

Hi everyone. My name is Ray, from Utica, NY. I will be visiting Poland soon, and I am hoping to meet my Polish relatives. I also hope some people from here may help me in contacting my relatives before my visit. Thanks and looking forward to meeting some great people on here!

I'm not buying into the conspiracy theory just yet. Based on what I've read, all these players started as freshman and have played in big games. That alone tells me some homework was done. While Day one was incrediable, day 2 presented some interesting gems....Brad Cottam takes the TE position to a new level and factor in Tony as a mentor, this is a sign that our TE position will be secure for a long while. Moreover, we have a couple of return guys that can compete.

Initially, I was disappointed that we didn't get better offensive lineman but after doing some analysis, we may be getting a better bargain through FA signings. Time will tell. Either way, Brodie has some tools, and looks like he'll get plenty of practice learning to read defenses....

PS.... Anybody heard if Gunther has made any comments? After day 1, I'll bet he is still numb!!!

Jay and Simon:

1. Right there with you on MasterBlaster's conspiracy theories. When confronted with multiple possible explanations, the simplest is usually the best (the Principle of Occam's Razor).

2. Also, SO MANY of the Chiefs' picks were not only BPA in areas of need, they were tremendous value picks--Dorsey, Albert (even after trading up to 15), Flowers (could have been late R1), Charles & Morgan (both could have gone in R2)--or hidden gems (Carr and Johnston). I cannot think of a single significant reach. To be sure, not all will work out after 2-3 years. But, this is how you go about building championship calibre teams over time!

3. I think the odds are good that they will get at least 5 starters out of this group. Too many limit their definition of "starter" to the base offensive and defensivie packages. But what about the variations: 2 TEs, 3 or 4 WRs, nickel and dime CBs; and what about special teams KR, PR and coverage, where we were so bad last year? So, even if Dorsey, Albert and Flowers are the only 3 to start in the base offensive and defensive packages, I bet all that make the team will "start" in some significant special package or special team role.

Adam:

You summed it up best when you said that at last Carl Peterson was like Mozart rather than Solieri!

Hey Jay,

I hope I have to buy you that steak!!! bannyc9--I stand by my statement. Solari's play calling last year was miserable. I would expect some kind of improvement by Chan Gailley. Gailley did craft an offense for Kordell Stewart when he was in Pittsburgh which utilized Stewart's abilities to the max. However, it is my opinion that the spectacularly stupid play calling of last year was largely a result of Herm Edwards keeping Solari on a short leash. Otherwise, why didn't Herm intervene at about game two of the nine game losing streak. It was probably because he either "A." approved of Solari's run-run-pass-punt offense, or "B." didn't know enough about offense to become involved. Either is a scary thought. With improved offensive line play and two or three adequate healthy running backs in the mix, this years offense should be a vast improvement. My assumption is Gailley's play calling will be an improvement over Solari's. I don't think Gailley will have carte blanche with the offense. I think Herm will still be pressuring Gailley to use the run-run-pass-punt offense whether or not it works. Herm's lack of knowledge in terms of offensive football will definitely be a disadvantage if not a total detriment to the team during the course of the season.

alright. so we got Dorsey, which is awesome, i mean AWESOME. and they're going to let him get after the quarterback which he's overly excited to have an opportunity to do considering they had him in a 2-gap technique all through college... i think he could become an even bigger beast. AWESOME. you want your jared allen 15.5 sacks, well.. maybe one player won't have 15.5 next year, but maybe Dorsey commanding double and triple teams will allow Hali, Boone, and McBride to get more sacks collectively... only time will tell, but AWESOME....

Albert didn't look excited when i saw him find out he got drafted, but then i read an interview, and it sounds like he's looking forward to pulling out and mowing down guys for LJ. if you watch tape on him... that's what he does... he mows people down for his running back. the dude played basketball and has ridiculous footwork for a big man. AWESOME.

Brandon Flowers made it feel like we had 3 1st round picks this year, he lacks some of the measurables, but it sounds like he is bright as all get out, and he hits... he's perfect for our cover 2 scheme... i'm sooo glad he slid into the 2nd round.

Jamaal Charles... AWESOME. Just what Larry Johnson needed, even though he might not think so... Johnson can run between the tackles, Charles on the outside, and he's got some moves. If we get him in the weight room he can be our scat back, i think we probably just play him in the return game this year, but next year i think he beats out Kolby Smith at #2

ok here are some comparisons i'm making.

Glenn Dorsey and Warren Sapp.

Sapp fell to the Bucs in 95'... Herm Edwards had some fun with that guy.

Phat Albert and Willie Roaf/Johnathon Ogden... boy could those guys mow some people down...

Brandon Flowers and Ronde Barber/Antwaan Winfield... Ronde was taken in the 2nd round and loved to put the hurt on in Herm Edwards Tampa Two system, taken and Winfield is a prototype run support corner with less than exceptional speed... but he does his job.

Jamaal Charles and Warrick Dunn... kind of a stretch, but he was drafted in the beginning of the Tampa 2 era as well and he hit the edges while Pittman worked between the tackles. The only difference is Dunn COULD play as an every down or almost every down back... Charles thinks he can do that... but only time will tell...

do we already have a John Lynch-like player in Page or Pollard?

can we get a bruising fullback like Alstott?

can we find another Jared Allen/Simeon Rice figure?

these are just my thoughts...

what do you think we can/will do in free agency now that the draft is out of the way? i'd like to see a move for another WR/OL... and maybe play around with the Lito Sheppard situation... we definitely need to throw another vet QB in the mix... if Brodie has nobody to look up to but Huard he's probably bound to end up a Huard... let's get Kurt Warner instead, lol i don't care... someone who can show him how to be a success rather than a non-success...i know Huard doesn't deserve the shot... i just don't really have strong feelings for him because he's just happy being a backup, and that's all he's ever been... lets get a guy who knows what it's like to start in this league and have him teach the kid how to be successful...

i kinda wish we made the move for Zuttah in the 3rd rd. or Limas Sweed in the 2nd... but then again, i should just be happy with the presents i did get for christmas... errr... the draft.

did we find a future Tony Gonzales retirement project in Brad Cottam? did we find a Jason Dunn replacement in Michael Merritt?

alright... enough questions and thoughts for now... let me know what you think.

Great draft! I'll admit, the 3rd round totally had me scratching my head at first, but I can see the logic now. We really ran away with this one.

I was really hoping for Owen Schmitt...damn you Seahawks.

BTW - I didn't realize JA was such an ass. F*ck him. Just goes to show that it was a good decision to get rid of him. He didn't want to play here anyway. Drunken bastard.

We have a new star on our line now - the GD!

Oops, I meant MasterBlaster, my bad.

Simon, all I can say is thank you. While you and I in our "Willful Ignorance," as MasterBater put it, will enjoy a legitimate rebuilding, while he and his conspiracy theorists wrap their heads in foil and hide in the closet until the mothership comes.
I get so tired of that crap, why can't it just be what it is. If we traded LJ and TG away who would buy tickets, no one UM K.
MB, As for my feeble, also known as realistic and reasonable argument, rather than using no facts and all speculation to make an argument. Why not accept the reality in front of your face? They "tried" to get six starters, but found it wasn't in the best interest of the team due to the lack of starters available at the picks. Its a much easier argument to make and support with facts than your complete fantasy.
As for legacy, its not about what I think, Carl is a man of ego, just like G.W.B. and G.W.B. is trying in vein to salvage his B.S. legacy. However, Carl actually has an opportunity to leave the chiefs with his mark by creating a winner. Why choose the other option when his job is safe until the end of his contract anyway.

MasterBlaster and Simon,

Jared Allen...I raged against his trade, but after that story MasterBlaster tipped, I have this to say:

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2008/4/27/462012/jared-allen-rip

Sorry to link to another Chiefs blog, but that pissed me off so much I had to post something.

Good catch, MasterBlaster. I feel even better about us totally PWNING the draft. This is one of the happiest times I have had in my Chiefs fandom!

Simon:

I agree I don't think that any of the guys we drafted spell the end of anyone (Maybe Greg Wesley).

We now have wonderful depth at RB and Safety! We also needed to repace Kris Wilson and Jason Dunn. We did that here too.

This was a great draft!

The 3rd round was strange but all you conspiracy Chiefs get a little annoying. We drafted a tight end early, OH NO! Tony's trade bait....we draft a rb just as early OH NO! carls gonna move LJ. Come on guys don;t be ridiculous. We drafted a tight end because news flash, Tony won;t be around forever, we need to develop a replacement before he retires a career long chief (which he IS GOING TO DO) and we had to replace Dunn for a power run game. So, That's more of a statement about Michael Allen's job security. The same goes for Charles (I don't think we needed him but I LOVE that pick up) and just like Michael Allen, that pick says more about Kolby Smith. We need a 2 back tandem. That's just todays NFL and with him AND Smith maybe a 3 back.... Look at San Diego with Tomlinson, Their 1st rounder (who replaced Turner) and Sproles. I think our 3rd was great but NOOOO Carls just getting ammo trade away our entire team. I hate that f*cking attitude.

PS- Jared you broke my god damn heart. Go have a few beers and drive home....

i really think richardson will be really good

on carr i googled his name and got the no tds in 3 yrs

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WTF
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1:40 p.m.: Allen schmoozes the Viking fans by saying, "When they said K.C. had the greatest fans, they lied."

Fk you hill billy boy! I hope you tear your ACL in practice, go cry into your beer, and get a DUI driving home!

I cant believe that chit...did he really say that? Are my eyes going on me? We were so gracious about his leaving too.

And by he way, who predicted that Brandon Flowers would be a CHief this weekend? (Me and maybe Jason too, lol!)

GO CHIEFS!!

Oh god, give me a break! This was a great draft, and the Chief's brass said they followed their board and did not stray from it!

That Board was the culmination of 1000's of man hours! I think this was a wonderful draft, (but of course, only time will tell).

My only, and I mean only, disappointment was not grabbing a QB to compete. We still have Brodie and Huard and Thigpen. I would have like to see one younger guy in there. If we are rebuilding then Huard does not need to be in the mix. GO Chiefs!!!!!!

Agree on Collins UCrawford. Either Collins or Nicks would have been fine with me in the 3rd.

Aside from Charles (who was an absolute steal), Richardson (who might end up being really good), and Johnston (who might be a starter or a decent backup), I actually hated every pick on the 2nd day. We passed up way too many good offensive line prospects and we're desperately in need of those. Unless there was a murdered hooker in his past that we're not aware of there was no reason not to be looking at Anthony Collins with one of our third round picks or our fourth rounder (which we used to reach on a WR). Terrible terrible second day drafting.

Krans

Yah, I just threw Andre Woodson in there for flavor. I mean 10 months ago it was Brohm, Woodson, Ryan, in about that order. And, everyone loves to say all QBs are a 50/50 prospect. Which, I believe, is true. So why not flip two coins? Hell, look at Green Bay. They are flipping 3 coins. Aaron, Brohm(2nd), and Flynn(7th). And, I think Green Bay knows a little something about picking franchise QB's.

My only other real switches were Nicks and Collins. This holds with rebuilding our O-line.

But, all in all, I think it was a good draft. First day was awesome. Second day, I don't completely agree with, but the ones I don't agree with weren't necessarily bad picks. I just thought we should go a differnt direction.

Jay, your willful ignorance amuses me. Yes, Herm did say he would take BPA, but Herm also said he was going to try and get 5 or 6 starters in this draft. First day, 3 starters, awesome. Backup for LJ/Colby; not a starter. Backup for Tony G.; not a starter. Competition with Pollard/Page; probably not a starter.

So please, if you want to flame me, fine. Just don't ommit facts to support your feeble arguments. Um K.

oh and..."You honestly believe he’s(Carl Peterson) trying to throw away the next few seasons, which will certainly be his last, and completely trash his legacy?"

What legacy?!?! Tieing the Chiefs in knots for the last 30 years for ticket sales is a legacy? You probably think George Bush needs to protect his legacy too.

After watching that footage on Charles I'm loving the pick honestly. As crazy as drafting a running back that early sounded to me. I think this guy is going to be a stud.

by like LJ i meant a punisher between the tackles but not much breakaway speed. Obviously not a skill level comparison.

Isn't Mike hart more like LJ, don't we need a change of pace guy who can get to the outside?

Basically Blaster your draft is only different because it involved QBs

Personally i think Brohm might be good but i wasnt high enough on him to move up and i think id be ok in scenario 1 or 2

Nicks might have been a good addition (i thought we should consider the OT from Kansas but didnt know much about him)

Hate the andre woodson pick although as a 6th round its not bad to take a chance, i just am not high on him at all.

Overall though this draft was very goood for us, i just would have wished for maybe another OL and mike hart instead of Jamaal Charles (at a lower spot)

Some on here were talking about getting McFumble (only cause he's a raider now) if he fell to us at 5. I think we got a poor man's McFadden with Jamal Charles. Also, with Albert, McIntosh, Waters, and Niswanger/ Smith penciled in, I'm confident one of 9 guys on the roster can fill the final spot. I can't imagine these corners being a step down from Law last year. Wideout Safety and Fullback look to have a good competition. TE,LB,DT all look pretty darn good. I think our biggest problem is DE and maybe finding a Kicker somewhere in post draft cuts. Great draft.

This is what was done, and how I would have done it, if I was in the chiefs war room with a baseball bat.

+MasterBlaster runs Bartertown+

Sorry Masterblaster, but these conspiracy theories are nuts. You come up with all this bizarre logic on why we drafted players, other than the obvious, BPA (whether you agree with their assessment is a different story.) I'll even ignore the argument that Carl hasn't been interested in winning over the past years, even though I think its ridiculous. You honestly believe he's trying to throw away the next few seasons, which will certainly be his last, and completely trash his legacy? They are and have been doing exactly what they said they would do. Get younger, rebuild through the draft, and take the BPA. Its amazing that they can stand up in a press conference, tell you exactly what they are going to do, go do it, and some of you can still, with a straight face, say that they have somehow mislead you.

Overall its hard to say the Chiefs havent had the best draft in the NFL, sure day 2 wasnt as orgasmic as day 1 but when is it ever? But yea the Chiefs draft seems to be the universal success pick around the league

1) First day incredible, we got first of all 2 players we really wanted and needed in dorsey and albert, hopefully they become cornerstones on our team.
2) Flowers, i was surprised we went CB this early but herm must really like him, i would like to have had a little more size on him but in cover 2 its not too bad, plus he seems like a real gamer.
3) Surprised with the RB pick, i do think hes a good player and i think he will backup LJ fine but as i continue to beat my drum i still think Mike Hart would have been a great steal.
4) Im happy with our receiver, (would have liked manningham until i was informed of the wonderlik :/) but from waht ive seen/read about the WR we picked it seems good.
5) Loving what was said about our 2nd CB, not giving up a TD in 3 years is insane if true
6) I like the TE and Safety and hopefully they can come in and contribute right away.

Overall im very pleased with this draft, we didnt get everything but we did quite well at least as far as you can predict right now, never know who will boom or bust

I don't know about this second day. It's almost like Carl wrestled away the gamepad from Herm/Kuharich. I mean think about this...

1-3rd Jamaal Charles: Carl wants to put preasure on Lary Johnson to perform next year. Herm is gona run Johnson into the Ground, but get good numbers next year. With good numbers, Carl has potential trade bate in Johnson, or an insurance policy if Herm breaks him.

2-3rd Brad Cottam: Carl sees definate trade bate in Tony G. as he draws close to the end of his career. Think Montana/Rice, end of career, trade value.

3-3rd DaJuan Morgan: Herm wants to put preasure on Page/Pollard to perform (not a half bad idea), but shows waaaay too much focus on safeties; sacrificing O-Line/QB's, cause safeties/CB's is what herm knows.

So, at second glance, these three 3rds seem a lil ominous. They are good picks, just maybe not good picks for us, and our situation. But then again, In herm I trust, he and his staff put a LOT of work into this draft. But, "in herm I trust", is quickly turning into, "in herm im a little nervous but remain comited to his drafting wisdom".

How can you say nothing has been done "the head coach's non understanding of offensive football"? Didn't we get Chan Gailey.

Come on g.l., you have to do better than that.

Peyton Hillis just went to the Donkeys. S-H-H-E-E-I-T!!!!

Biggest disappointment to me so far is that they passed on a QB in the 5th. Who we gonna play when Brodie gets hurt? Huard???

I'm looking forward to my steak G.L. :)

awesome the only thing that could have been better if we would gave gotten jake long; wasnt gonna happen im satisfied we got some starters and i cant wait for the season
GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!

The first day of the draft could hardly have gone better. I have to give the Chiefs/Carl Peterson/Herm/Kuharich credit for this one. Day one was masterful. Day two was not quite as good, but still I think what one would consider a very successful or at least promising draft. All in all, it looks like a very good step towards getting the Chiefs back to respectability. One still has to bear in mind, though, that nothing has been done to fix the head coach's non understanding of offensive football. That will be the biggest obstacle standing in the way of increased success on the field during the 2008 season.

The next Jared Allen. He caught a touchdown pass last year. HA! Ok.. maybe not.

Brian Johnston, Gardner-Webb, 6-foot-6, 280-pound DE, sub-4.8 40, small school guy, so we shall see...definitely not the reason we moved Jared, but who knows...could ned up making the team and eventually contributing...

OUT

One more pick and I'm passing out. Draft lag...lol...

Did the Ravens just pick Hiro Nakamora from Heroes? I guess he can freeze people by stopping time, he'll be pretty good.

I'm sure we all agree that maybe some of the positions we selected today were a bit unexpected, but overall all seem to be quality so I think it was a good day 2 for us as well. I give us a B- for day 2, and an A- overall.
