Knee-Jerk Reaction: Jamaal Charles?
The Chiefs must’ve really liked Jamaal Charles to take a running back this early in the draft, so I’m on board with this pick. Like I said during the Run DMC dialogue we had, we need to protect our investment in Larry Johnson and we lose too much when Kolby Smith tries to step in his shoes. Charles seems like a perfect third-down back. He’s got good hands, good lateral quickness and some nifty moves. Here are some Charles highlights, but after the clip I want to hear thoughts on the kid. We all saw him play pretty extensively as Big 12 fans.

I like the charles pick….but the other two guys….what????
April 27th, 2008 at 9:03 amgood hands? He fumbled more than any other running back in college football.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:09 amwe could have had doucet in the 3rd round to pair up with Bowe and Dorsey from LSU…and they take Brad Cottam. I would compare that to putting my name in as a write-in for President instead of selecting one of the nominated candidates.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:10 amGood hands as far as catching out of the backfield, genius. TLH…always out in left field.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:12 amI’m wondering what happened to getting starters. None of the 3 3rd round picks were immediate starters. Very strange change in draft strategy.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:13 amRed Dragon,
Brad Cottam was one of my Draft Apples for today. I am pumped about that pick. All we have is Tony G and a seventh rounder on the roster right now, and Cottom can really block. You heard Kiper–if he had of got more passes thrown at him he would have been a first-round guy. If Tony G gets hurt he steps in, and Chan will go double tight some for sure. More on Cottam to come…
April 27th, 2008 at 9:14 amAnd if we passed on Doucet after taking two LSU guys what does that say about him? What does it say about Darling? Let’s read between the lines.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:15 amWell, I don’t think everybody is as sold on Jarrad Page as most fans are, Bartle. And I think Cottom will be a starter, a la Jason Dunn. The kid can block and will be our second TE, playing a significant number of reps. Charles will be our third-down back. So, in a way, both will be starters. Now with Morgan, that’s a different story.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:17 amGood pick. As for the TE, I don’t quite get it with Craig Stevens there. If you’re going to draft a TE, why not get one who’s already developed as a Run Blocker. They must see a lot of potential in him. Safety also seems like an odd choice, but he has played corner, maybe they think they plan on using him as a nickel and backup safety, but I would have preferred a WO, or DE.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:19 amI hope you are right, Adam…I am loving the Charles pick after watching that highlight reel. Reminds me of Willie Parker a bit.
I guess I am just surprised in general that we didn’t go with either a C/G or WR with any of the 3 picks today so far.
Hoping for Sullivan in the 4th and Schmidt in the 5th.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:20 amso it seems to me that maybe page isnt out guy then… or maybe just more competition in the secondary..
April 27th, 2008 at 9:21 amGood points made, I didn’t follow Cottam much, if they weren’t throwing to him then he can’t get the stats that way. I’ve just seen that his blocking is good but not great. Either way, he’s likely better than Michael Allen as a blocker.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:22 amwhat about mario manningham? hes still sitting there…
April 27th, 2008 at 9:24 amI think its likely with the S pick, that Greg Wesley will be cut and he’ll play Wesley’s role on D for the first season, unless he just takes off and takes a starting position from Page or Pollard. I wouldn’t put it past Herm, he loves competition.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:25 amManningham was out of shape for workouts, lied to teams about his drug use, and had a really poor combine. That said as a fourth round pick, might be worth it just due to his production. Can he or Jamal Charles return kicks?
April 27th, 2008 at 9:29 amIs anyone watching NFL network. I have two comments.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:35 amCharlie Casserly looks like Moe Howard.
They have yet to criticize anyones draft, is the ESPN
broadcast a little more critical?
Yeah he’ll catch the ball and then fumble it!
April 27th, 2008 at 9:57 amAddressing a misleading issue. Did anyone check to see how many fumbles Jamaal Charles had last year, 5, 5 fumbles. Do anyone realizes that Darren McFadden lead the nation in fumbles. Charles was given this misleading title because of a fumble in the Oklahoma game. A fumble that Texas great Earl Campbell said that he would have lost that one also. The fact of the matter is that the kid had 5 fumbles, but why let the FACTS get in the way of MISLEADING INFORMATION. The “thelandryhat” do a google search on “Darren McFadded Fumbles” and you see that he lead the nation in fumbles. Jamaal Charles is a great selection for the Chiefs and will do the city proud. Remember 5 fumbles and for good measures a 10.13 hundred yard dash, how could that NOT help the team. Overall this is a great draft for the Chiefs, don’t rain on the parade.
April 27th, 2008 at 11:01 amcompletly hate this pick
April 27th, 2008 at 11:03 amHATER IN THE HOUSE! Set him straight, Anthony!
April 27th, 2008 at 11:04 ambigger needs than running back, he wont help open holes…
April 27th, 2008 at 11:04 amthought you were gonna take away TLH’s posting rights? this guy is CRAZY
April 27th, 2008 at 11:39 amthe kid looks good..great moves and he has wheels..should be good as a 3rd down back or comin off the bench to give LJ a breather
April 27th, 2008 at 11:47 amWHO THE FUC IS BRANDON CARR
April 27th, 2008 at 11:53 amI don’t envy opposing defenses (if the line is much better, which it should be) dealing with L.J. and then having this guy come off the bench and burning you for the home run. I know we need O-Line, but you can’t draft world class speed any later than this. Great value pick
April 27th, 2008 at 12:19 pmI said on the live chat that McFadden needs a new nickname now that he’s a Raider. I have to say I like the sound of Darren McFumble.
April 27th, 2008 at 12:43 pmThat’s some of the most amazing balance I’ve ever seen. Wow. And I love how he puts the shoulder down. I hate the pick of a running back, but damn…
April 27th, 2008 at 12:49 pmOh my god what is happening?
OK, who here wouldnt burn two of these third round picks for Brian Brohm?
A backup to Johnson/Colby?
A backup to Tony G.?
A frickin Safety!?!?
No Carl Nicks? Jesus…we didnt even take Andre Woodson with our 6th
April 27th, 2008 at 1:49 pmIm not so high on this pick but probably because im so in love with mike hart and think its utterly ridiculous that he fell to the 6th. That being said, the colts will get better, also though this kid at RB ive seen him limitedly throughout the year and he had some flash and potential i think theres no doubt hes going to be LJs backup, i think its an ok pick but i question whether we could have got someone to fill a bigger hole
April 27th, 2008 at 3:40 pmAnybody think to consider the Chiefs might be looking to line Charles up in the slot or on the opposite side from Bowe – at least part of the time? He certainly has the speed and hands to do the gig.
April 27th, 2008 at 4:22 pmCan Charles be a return guy?
April 27th, 2008 at 6:59 pmI LOVE THIS GUY !
April 27th, 2008 at 8:15 pmSo… I just watched this video, and other videos on youtube, and I’m just going to say it again. This dude might have the best balance I’ve ever seen. It does hurt to watch the clips with him against Mizzou though.
