Knee-Jerk Reaction: DaJuan Morgan
Update: Just read that he’s a standout special teamer.
The Chiefs went with S DaJuan Morgan out of N.C. State with its third third -round pick. I can already hear the grumbling, but, hey, maybe the Chiefs aren’t as high on Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page as fans are. Some fans act like they’ve both already made a handful of Pro Bowls. Let’s get serious; they both got burned frequently in pass coverage last year, and Page’s tackling left a lot to be desired.
Before I break down Morgan, I just want you to know that the kid’s versatile–he’s a dancer and a poet. Now Bernard isn’t the only Chiefs’ safety who can get down!
Moving on to the football side of things. Morgan knew he wasn’t going to be a first-round pick this year, but felt confident leaving as a junior nonetheless. Still, Scout had him ranked as their fourth best safety, and he might have been an ‘09 first-round pick had he of stayed in school. Only a one-year starter, but he is an exceptional athlete with all the measurables. Led the Wolfpack with 97 tackles a year ago, his first as a starter. Ran a 4.5 40. Missed his whole high school senior year because of a car accident, so this kid is a classic late bloomer. He’ll be a boom-or-bust guy. Serious upside, folks.
That’s all I have on Morgan for now. Could be a stud or a flop, so we’ll have to take a wait-and-see approach with this kid. Check out his highlights. You will love the passion he plays with…

When all your third-round picks have YouTube footage, that’s a good sign!
April 27th, 2008 at 10:17 amIn defense of those of us who defend Pollard and Page, you guys act like they are draft busts. I think their play last year was pretty good considering they were both starters for the first time. Either way, this is a move to create competition, the best two guys will have the job in 08. I really think Morgan fits well in Greg Wesley’s role, backup safety and nickel/dime corner.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:26 amI like Pollard quite a bit, while I’m not a big Page guy. I’m just saying that neither has done enough to be a guaranteed starter. This kid looks like a player, man. They better watch their backs. I agree, though, competition is good.
April 27th, 2008 at 10:59 ami love he can hit, my problem is that with one new corner… we need center fielder speed in a safety of which none of our safeties have
April 27th, 2008 at 11:11 amalso..if the kid can return kicks he is golden
April 27th, 2008 at 11:50 amAnother player who feeds off the fans. Looks good.
April 27th, 2008 at 11:54 amAnother interesting pick based on position. I thought we’d have drafted 18 lineman by now though. As for the pick itself, gotta love this kids motor. Looks like enjoys the hell out of himself on the field. Pretty good open field tackler too. Best play on that video was the one (looked like they were playing Georgia Tech) where he kept his body and shoulders lateral to the play, and destroyed that option.
