The Golden Rule Of The NFL Draft & How The Chiefs Might Violate It

Posted by: ericcrane
The Chiefs have been blowing kisses to every player in the Top 10. It appears they don’t know what’s going to happen themselves…and in my opinion-they don’t.One possibility that hasn’t been discussed is a potential trade with the Ravens, a team that is absolutely desperate for a QB.

Steve McNair is as fragile as a graham cracker, Kyle Boller hasn’t done much but show a few flashes of luckiness before regressing and Troy Smith appears to be another Heisman casualty; light years away from being a starter. Along with the Falcons, and our Chiefs, the Ravens are in the “Needa Quarterback Club”.

The Ravens have the 8th pick, the 38th pick, and in the third round #99, then #106 right after us at #105.

(They would have had #71 too, but due to the McGahee trade a few years ago and later Marcus Stroud-they sent it Jacksonville’s way.) I highly doubt they would part with #38, but they might want to wheel and deal with the rest because they are at a total wild-card spot now. Here’s my projection in this scenario.

Somehow, the ‘Fins will get Jake Long. I challenge you to name a quality starter on their line off the top of your head. (Don’t cheat and Google-Blast me in the comments either…you know you couldn’t do it.)

At #2, the Rams need a DE in a bad way. Leonard Little alone can’t cut it and he’s getting old too. DE Chris Long seems to be a good fit. Between their two starting DE’s last year they had all of 3.5 sacks. Jared Allen could get that in one game. That being said, they could also go-go gadget Gholston which would just swap with the Jets at #6.Next up, the Falcons. They will take Glenn Dorsey at #3. Here’s why:

Falcons G.M., Thomas Dimitroff comes from New England. He essentially crafted that team by using his #1 picks on Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, and Ty Warren. Not only that, but they have not one, not two, but THREE second-round picks. (#34, #38 and #48) They also need a QB and they will likely get Brohm, Flacco or Henne with one of those.

#4 The Faiders- who don’t deserve bold; they take Run DMC because they are stupid enough to tie up $100 million in two guys who haven’t played 1 full game. One of those three precious second-round picks (#34) Atlanta owns came from Oaktown for DeAngelo Hall.

Chiefs fans hold your breath…

With the 5th pick in the 2008 NFL draft the Chiefs select…NO ONE!

We trade our pick because HermCarl is going to violate the Golden Rule of the NFL draft. Anyone know it?

Thou Shalt Not Pass on a Franchise QB!!!

My call is we are going to trade and I don’t think it will be with New England. They (N.E.) need to get younger at LB or DE and trading up doesn’t help them. They can grab Keith Rivers, USC LB, or Derrick Harvey, Florida DE, with their pick.

I think the Chiefs might go ahead and trade down a few spots and the Ravens‘ spot makes sense if we are shooting for Ellis, Albert, Otah or McKelvin. All of those guys can help us and if we can sell our soul for an extra pick we will do it since we’ve lost half the team to waivers or free agency. However…my gut says Herm is hoping to grab Sedrick Ellis at #8 and perhaps effectively piss off every Chiefs fan on Planet Earth since we all know we are weakest on the offensive line, and that B.C. suuuuucks in our currrent sitch.

So the Ravens at #5 get Matt Ryan. The Cheaps save several million bucks (stadium renovations people) and still get who they want. We play in a division with 3 young QB’s… Philip Rivers is 25-7 as a starter. Oakland has FatMarcus and Denver has Cutler. We need a QB that can win us some games, but I’m not confident we should play revolving door at QB again this year with Matt Ryan. We can already do that again with Huard and BC. Slap your forehead now dudes, it might prepare you for the shock when the KC front office will awe you with the continued Chiefs Draft Madness.

Herm proved to me when I “used to” bet on football that he doesn’t care about covering the spread. A new QB or a wrinkle threat of McFadden would go against everything Herm is about. His 13-10 games cause me to taste a little bit of bile upchuck that is strangely reminiscent of Zarda BBQ beans in the back of my throat. That trend continues and all Chiefs fans can do is sit on their sweaty hands and pray this isn’t Ryan Sims part II. I’m not totally anti-Ellis, because we need more depth at DT…but does he instantly make the Chiefs a lot better right now? Maybe, but not as much as a starting offensive lineman would.

The best of the rest-

6. Jets – Vernon Gholston DE Ohio State

7. Pats – Keith Rivers USC or Derrick Harvey FL

8. Chiefs – Sedrick Ellis DT USC

9. Bungles – Rivers or WR Devin Thomas Michigan (bye bye Chris Henry and maybe Ocho Cinco too?)

10. Saints – Albert in an attempt to help Reggie Bush. If K. Rivers falls, this is as low as he goes.

So there you have it…Crane Damage top 10 projections unless Jerry Jones decides to break the bank on McFadden and give up one of those two first-rounders to get him. We’d be stupid to take anything less from Tightface. He’d be better served going after CB’s DRC or Aquib Talib (and his ganja). By the way, if you’re wondering where Clady is…he’s going to Denver at #12 to replace Matt Lepsis; where the low oxygen apparently won’t harm his feeble brain.

    PS-

I said 3 young QB’s because until BigBrodie wins a game, he’s not our QB. If we don’t draft one, I’m sure there will be another QB competition in camp. It could end up being Thigpen for all we know…and do we know what we got for Sims yet?

  2. 2. jay Says:

So we should do what the Texans did with David Carr? Cause that worked out great.

  3. 3. Clinton Says:

I would actually love this scenario to happen. Sedrick Ellis and Tank Tyler in the middle of Hali and Allen sounds like a great defensive line. If we could get more picks that would be great as well.

  4. 4. KCMizzou Says:

I’ve tried really hard to buy into the Matt Ryan theory, but I just can’t do it.

  5. 5. Crane Says:

    Jay-
I’m saying we don’t do what they did with Carr…waste a high pick on a QB you can’t protect and have to trade him for nothing. Esp. since we did that with Sims recently, I’m praying this doesn’t end up as deja vu for KC.

  6. 6. jay Says:

My mistake, I missed that you were saying we should break the golden rule. Good article.

  7. 7. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) Says:

Thanks for the article. I would be srprised if the Raiders take McFadden; Shocked! They can’t be so cap un-wise to do so. They are counting on Michael Bush to be healthy! They go D-lineman.

  8. 8. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) Says:

By the way….. Anyone reading the “building an offensive line” articles on the Chiefs’ web site? Sounds like propaganda to me. Basically, (my take) is that you can build a solid offensive line with 2nd/3rd/ and 4th round players….. Are they softening the blow for a QB/DT/CB/ with the first pick? Any thoughts……

  9. 9. Crane Says:

There was a lot of stuff I had to fact check on the article…thanks. As far as Oakland, I agree…but you know how much speed makes the old man hard. Leave it to the Gaiders to rely on Huggy Bear’s kid and a guy with a busted leg.

And Jay…to further clarify, I stating the brass will break the rule by skipping on Ryan. The trading down is just a predicate. I don’t think we’d take Ryan even if we don’t trade, but I, personally, think the value of the extra picks would make the trade worth doing.

  10. 10. cd Says:

As far as what we got for Ryan, I can’t remember. Here is a list of the Chiefs picks so far:

    Round 1, pick #5
    Round 2, pick #4 (35)
    Round 3, pick #3 (66)
    Round 4, pick #6 (105)
    Round 5, pick #1 (136)
    Round 5, pick #5 (140)
    Round 6, pick #4 (170)
    Round 6, pick #21 (187)
    Round 7, pick #3 (210)
    Round 7, pick #32 (239)

Interesting… I don’t know if I agree or if I want this, but interesting, all the same. I’m gonna have to clear out my schedule for next weekend.

  12. 12. Thunderdunk Says:

Trade down and take Albert. If you must take a QB in this draft, take Flacco, Brohm, etc in Rd. 2. However, I would prefer taking the highest rated DB in the 2nd and a Center in Rd 3.

  13. 13. Ernest Says:

Matt Ryan is NOT a franchise QB. But I do agree that Croyle is not the answer. We will find our future QB in due time, just be patient we after all are finally rebuilting.

  14. 14. Krans Says:

-Though nobody will believe me, Colt Brennan is the best quarterback in this draft

-Does he fit with the chiefs? nope so we shouldn’t take him, and Ryan is definately the safest as far as a guaranteed role somewhere in the NFL but im not sold enough to pick him at 5. I think hes got some promise and he has been a proven winner, also his style might fit into our scheme but he hasn’t proved to be incredibly accurate, he does seem to have good fundamentals though and good intelligence

but just remember if Colt gets a chance and stays healthy, i think hes got the best star potential

  15. 15. Stevenh Says:

Saying Matt Ryan is a franchise quarterback is ridiculous. Tom Brady is a franchise quarterback, Peyton Manning is a franchise quarterback. Is Matt Ryan a franchise qb? Who knows, give him five-seven years then asked that question. Remember, there a lot my Ryan Leafs and Heath Schuler’s in the “franchise qb” club then Mannings and Brady’s.

Just the same, I don’t see how anyone can say Brodie is not the answer, how do you or anyone else know this? He started 1/2 a season with makeshift OLine in front of him and no run game to boot. Make the argument he is not the answer after this season.

MARK MY WORDS, if the Chiefs draft Matt Ryan with the first pick, it is the begining of the end for Herm and Carl, together.

  16. 16. Larry Says:

Samson Satele, Center out of Hawaii. He was only a rookie last year, but played well. Considering the botch of a draft they had last year, he was probably one of the only bright spots.

  17. 17. MatthewS Says:

I almost forgot about Michael Bush in Oaktown. It would make sense for them to go for another possition. Cap room for them is tight, and then KC has a proven runner but with half the line gone or terrible what is the point. I think Crane has it right. The Chiefs will pass on Ryan and go for Ellis. Herm always says defense first. Also you can get some quality linemen in the lower rounds. Ol’ Carl will be all too happy to save the dinero and get the warthogs in the later rnds. It does not matter anyways because no one can stop LT. San Diego takes the west again with Denver hot on their heels.

  18. 18. Mitch Says:

Why do we think that the Ravens would trade up when they know neither NY or NE will take Ryan? If we don’t take him, he falls right into their lap. If the Falcons don’t take Ryan, then he’s either going to us or Baltimore.

  19. 19. xxxlp Says:

Havn’t read any answers yet, was responding to the ‘name a linemen from the ‘Fins’ thing.. Someone they picked up this offseason in Justin Smiley, guard, formerly of San Fran. All he did for them was help Gore (while healthy) to the NFC rushing title in 2006. Also, there’s the polenesian center that they got last year, I remember hearing Bill Parcells say that guy was one of the few young players they had that wouldn’t be in major danger of being shifted/cut/whatever. But hell, I can’t name him so it doesn’t count. Pssh

  20. 20. xxxlp Says:

Anyone else find it ridiculous that after New England; the Chargers, Raiders, and then Broncos, consecutively, have the easiest strength of schedules this year? All 3 of our AFC West opponents, and yes, we did suck enough that it boosted their ratings, but seriously? How do the Chargers of all teams, easily the most talented teams in the league, have a schedule anywhere near easy? And for that matter, the Patriots only play what, 4 playoff teams from last year? I know everything changes year to year, but they were 2 minutes away from a perfect season, adding another ring to their already blinged out hands. BS. I declare shenanigans.

  21. 21. g.l. Says:

    Jeremy,

The same thought occurred to me when I was reading the Building an Offensive Line articles. Perhaps the Chiefs plan to go a different direction with their first pick and address the offensive line situation later in the draft. I hope the Chiefs do not trade down. We just endured a 4-12 season and this is the highest draft position we have had for many years. Ryan Sims was the 6th overall choice a number of years ago I believe and the damage done by that wrong pick was incalculable. Even so, the smart thing to do would be to take the best player (an impact player) on the board at number five and let the chips fall where they may in spite of the Ryan Sims fiasco. Derek Thomas was chosen fourth overall in the ‘89 draft (I think) and his contribution to the great defense of the 90’s was huge. I say think big with the first pick and draft the remainder of the picks as well as can possibly be done. If we draft any of the top seven players with the fifth pick, I’m fine with it.

  22. 22. Troy Says:

Not a Patriots apologist here but just thought I would bring this up since I’ve seen it a lot in comments about the new schedule on multiple websites. Most of the schedules are made in advance. Done in advance: You play your division teams twice (6 games), one division in your conference (on a rotation) (4 games), and one division in the opposite conference (on a rotation)(4 games). The only thing that changes is the two remaining games against the two other divisions in your conference that you don’t play already at the ranking that you finished in your conference. In New England’s case (they finished first in AFC East) this would be Indy (they finished first in AFC South) and Pittsburgh (they finished first in AFC North). So the theory that New England was gifted an easy schedule is kind of blown up because the divisions rotate and this year they just happened to get the AFC West and the NFC West (which are both predicted to be bad except for Seattle and San Diego based on last year’s records) and also their own terrible division.

  23. 23. Double D Says:

    Colt Brennan??? Whatever!

  24. 24. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) Says:

Where would Brodie Croyle fit amongst these QB Prospects:?

    1. Brian Brohm, Louisville, 6-3 1/4, 232, 4.69 (40 time).
    2. Matt Ryan, Boston College, 6-4 3/4, 222, 4.96.
    3. Joe Flacco, Delaware, 6-6 1/4, 237, 4.87.
    4. Chad Henne, Michigan, 6-2 3/4, 229, 4.93.
    5. John David Booty, USC, 6-2 1/4, 216, 4.83.
    6. Colt Brennan, Hawaii, 6-2 1/2, 218, 4.90.
    7. Erik Ainge, Tennessee, 6-5 1/5, 225, 4.99.
    8. Kevin O’Connell, San Diego State, 6-5 1/4, 222, 4.62.
    9. Paul Smith, Tulsa, 6-1 1/2, 208, 4.98.
    10. Andre’ Woodson, Kentucky, 6-4, 227, 4.86.

  25. 25. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) Says:

Chiefs | Team in trade talks for Allen
    Thu, 17 Apr 2008 09:38:15 -0700

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have been in trade talks with the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers for DL Jared Allen. Allen said he believes a deal could be done before the NFL Draft next week. He also stated that the two sticking points are working out terms of a deal with a new team and the Chiefs agreeing to compensation for the trade.

  26. 26. Larry Says:

Jeremy, I just read that myself, gave me a sinking feeling in my stomach.

  27. 27. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) Says:

Made me sick to my stomach too. What can we do? If he does not want to play and the Chiefs don’t want to pay, then trade him while he is at the top of his game. It just hurt to say that. :-(

  28. 28. Larry Says:

What’s the option on the team right now, Turk McBride, Geez???? I’m just hoping that Carl doesn’t botch it, and if Jared has to go, get the BEST possible deal. The only thing that would make me feel decent about this, would be a 1st and 2nd, not quite sure how I feel about a 1st and 3rd. Then we’d have to look harder at Gholston then we probably were before at 5.

  29. 29. bigchief13 Says:

The cheifs are retards. I have almost hit my limit. If this trade happens, thats it, I’m done. Stupid ass Carl. What a loser.

  30. 30. Larry Says:

However, if anyone is dumb enough to give up 2 first rounders, we’d be foolish not to jump.

  31. 31. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) Says:

Maybe Carl is letting Jared get a “reality check” on the amount of money other teams are willing to offer? I would hate to see him go, but what if he does not want to play for us? What can we do?

  32. 32. Ian Brennan Says:

good point maybe he has said behind closed doors that he done after this year….if thats the case then i hate to say it but you got to trade him….he is too valuable to let him walk next year for nothing in return…..If we get a first and a second……the whole draft changes for us becasue we are allowed to do more with it….i hate to see him go but if i did i would love to get high pi99cks and i like that they are talking to NFC Teams

  33. 33. r8rh8r Says:

I’m surprised this blog has had no mention of the Jared Allen situation. Not to hijack this thread, but I think letting a player of his caliber walk is insane.

True, he’s a UFA next season, but you’d think the Chiefs would lock him up long term this year. I guess money is just that tight in KC right now. Where’s it all getting spent? There isn’t a lot of talent on this team to begin with.

Allen could play at a high level for another 7 years. I doubt you could draft his equivalent in 1 out of a 100 tries. I don’t get the Cheif’s strategy here.

    Good luck.

  34. 34. r8rh8r Says:

Croyle would rate 6th or 7th on that list of QB’s. Of the group, I think Henne and Woodson are the best NFL prospects. They can be had on the cheap. If I were KC, I’d wait until the 3rd or 4th round to grab a QB. Croyle will get you through another year. You aren’t going to win the AFC this year if you draft Joe Montana.

  35. 35. Crane Says:

Anyone else see that Steve McNair retired today? I had no idea, but it strengthens the possibility of a trade with the Ravens if they want Ryan.

  36. 36. Krans Says:

Good call Larry on Samson, watching him play basically all his career i liked his chances in the NFL a lot and obviously the dolphins did too.

Now a lot of players out of Hawaii are just going to get free agent shots and most wont make it obviously.

DoubleD, its fine to doubt Brennan everybody does right now but just think about it

1)Proven Winner: Everyone talks about this with Ryan but look at what Brennan did at Hawaii, bringing Hawaii to the BCS much more significant than what Ryan did at BC.
2)Most Accurate QB: Won the accuracy competition, statistically one of the most accurate in the draft
3)System? Yes his stats are inflated from the system, but every program has a system he shouldnt be punished for playing in a good one. Plus look at the QB efficiency ratings (Junior year)

Now there are issues with him
    1) His throwing motion, yea its awkward and he might need to adjust it but it hasnt been a problem thus far
    2) End of the year performance against Georgia, first of all he had no protection at all, think chiefs line against Giants pass rush and basically thats what it was. There was a lot that went in to what transpired during this game that people dont know about but Georgia was a clearly better team that day
    3) Health this is the biggest concern, and having predraft surgery isnt going to help him

    HAVING SAID THAT

Compared to the other QBs in this draft (i don’t know much about Flacco) Brennan has a solid shot of becoming one of the best out of the draft. Hes a legit 1st rounder whose stock plummetted basically because of one game. How would you say taking this guy in the 4th or 5th isnt a good pick? Like i said earlier he doesnt fit the chiefs but some team who takes the time with him will get a gem, you dont have to agree doubleD but ill be interested to see how things play out

  37. 37. Zach Says:

His stock has plummeted because of a hip injury and not many people feel he has what it takes to make it in the League.

Also success in college doesn’t really mean that he will be anything. Look at Jason White (OU), any Texas-Tech QB, the Tedford QBs, etc…

Also to some who mentioned Woodson earlier, the guy takes longer to get rid of the football than Leftwich. Who wants to see that especially with our OL?

and you should start getting to know Joe Flacco (I love him)!

  38. 38. Double D Says:

    Krans,

The biggest knock on Brennan is his lack of gravitas. He looks like a 16 year old out there – many feel that he doesn’t have what it takes to command the respect of an NFL huddle much less opposing defenses.

The other negatives you mention are true as well.

As far as late round QBs go, I would rather take my chances on Dennis Dixon. Before his injury, he was projected among the top Heismann candidates. Check out some of his practice and rehab videos at DennisDixon10.com. Dixon also has potential as a NFL WR. I like 2fers.

  39. 39. Zach Says:

Again Heismanns aren’t usually the best NFL QBS. Jason White, Eric Crouch. I like Dixon but I think that he might be better at another position.

    Also:

Threw more interceptions (14) than touchdowns (12) in 2006.

    OUCH!

  40. 40. Crane Says:

When I lived in Oregon I got my fill of Dennis Dixon. He is fragile, he’s quick and fast but he goes down easy. He’d be a good slot WR maybe. He’s a Kordell Stewart type with less size. Also, he has a speech impediment that would drive KC fans nuts. If you think LJ is a little “afflicted” you ought to hear Dennis talk.

  41. 41. Krans Says:

To respond, i understand the knocks on Brennan

I’ve just had a lot of experience watching the kid and also interviewing him back when i did sports writing. Brennan has the heart of a lion and hes a fierce competitor those that think he cant be a leader i seriously doubt have watched more than 1 of his games or have talked to him

About the other Heismans i understand that, its just a college award. I never thought Eric Crouch or Jason White would have any shot in the NFL no one really did. As far as stats i just wanted to point out his QB efficiency ranking which means more than yrds, tds and interceptions alone.

Hes a longshot at this point, but as i said i think he is well worth the risk as a 4th or later round pick theres no doubt in my mind about that.

  42. 42. chuckp Says:

How about this for a “novel idea”, since we all know by now that the Chiefs are cheapskates when it comes to money, why don’t we just keep trading down thru out the draft and if we just keep “trading down” eventually we will have every pick in the 7th round!!!!!!!! That way Carl and Clark won’t have to spend much money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
