Life is full of surprises, isn’t it Chiefs fans? That’s why I was almost physically clapping when I read this article from Bob Gretz, aka King Carl’s P.R. android, over on the team’s official site:
For example, let’s say these are the top five players on the Chiefs board: T Jake Long, DE Chris Long, RB Darren McFadden, DT Glenn Dorsey and QB Matt Ryan. And let’s say this: the Chiefs grades on these five players are similar and show very little difference from No. 1 to No. 5 when it comes to how they project into the NFL.
What do the Chiefs do? When their turn comes, they take the player who remains undrafted. If there are more than two, then they make the decision based on need.
But if Dorsey remains, they don’t by-pass him and draft an offensive tackle or cornerback. If McFadden remains, they don’t walk away from him. If they’ve put Ryan in their top five and he’s still there, then they’ve got to take him.
Good football teams don’t ever pass up the chance to draft top talent, the kind that is generally taken in the first five spots in the selection meeting. When teams reach, is when they make mistakes.
That’s what I’ve been saying all along. By the way, “The Blueprint 4” is on the horizon. Don’t lose sleep waiting for it–I swear, I mention one of these things and you guys expect it out in a cool 60 minutes–but it will drop this upcoming week. One hint: It’s all about the trades.
