Reader Request: Brian Brohm

by Draft

Brian Brohm (Fox Sports)At the request of one of our favorite readers, Dave, here is the scoop on ex-Lousiville signal caller Brian Brohm (I really hate Louisville today, by the way…destroyed my bracket last night…not happy). Dave prefers Brohm to the other quarterbacks in this draft class, most notably Matt Ryan, and wanted us to take a look. Trying to be objective as we can, we are doing just that. Take a long hard look, Chiefs fans, he could end up being a Chief.

Would love the ideal of selecting him with our second round pick, if he's still available.

i told you the landryhat should get his posting priv. at least suspended if not axed smartest blogger u know ha

New rule: anything The Landry Hat rejects, I embrace. With his logic, if he hates something, then it's a gift from God.

I dont know if we will even get a shot at Brohm. His stock has been raising since his good pro day. Walter football has him going now in the mid to late 1st round. I looked at some of the last year walter football mock draft and determined 2 things. They are good at predicting the top 5 (decent at the top 10). Second, after 10 rounds, even if they get the team wrong they are pretty good at showing where in the draft someone will fall. Like Turk, last year, in walter predictions, was within one or two picks of ours. But, if we got Ellis and Baker in the 1st and 2nd id still be happy. Could we trade up for one of the cowboys picks to get Brohm? Who knows.

System or not, Brohm throws the ball hella nice.

Adam would make serious love to Matt Ryan. It is weird. I hope the Chiefs take Matt Heath Schuler Ryan Leaf. I really hope they do.

The Preacher will be on his way out this season.

johnson like 40someTDs TO 1 int?

A much tougher schedule? I don't think so. Look at their records, too: 11-3 vs. 6-6. I think I'll take the guy with the winning percentage over .500, not the loser/choker.

If people don't like Ryan, that's fine. But there is no way Brohm is better. I'd rather have Flacco or even Henne. I'd rather wait and draft Josh Johnson. Time will prove me right. You know who Brohm is? A system guy. A Tedford guy. He's David Carr. Joey Harrington. Alex Smith. I just don't like the guy. Sorry, but Flacco and Ryan are going to be the best QBs from this class. Brohm will be a bust. Mark my words.

TB3 is out this weekend, not today. Always been the case.

WOW, look at that...less INT's than your boy Matt Ryan against what many would argue a much tougher schedule and conference games. Hmmmmmm, makes you think about the media having to crown a "franchise qb" every year and Matt Ryan just happen to get the nod this year.

i mean as afr as build and use..jump ball situations etc

thx dave...so he could be worth takin a chance on in late rounds..maybe another randy moss type player

I thought it was becuase of character but it seems like it is durability

He would be worth a late round choice - but that would be it

I say 5th round or later if he is there and we haven't already drafted a wideout in an earlier round

Draft Scout *Mario Urrutia News
02/09/08 - PRO POTENTIAL: WR Mario Urrutia skipped his senior year despite a vastly disappointing junior season in which he dropped several balls and missed time with a turf toe injury. But his 6-foot-6 frame should be attractive to scouts if he has favorable workouts. He has been compared in the past to Plaxico Burress. Look for Urrutia to go on the second day.

12/14/07 - Louisville wide receiver Mario Urrutia will bypass his senior season and enter the NFL Draft. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound Urrutia had 35 receptions for 501 yards and three touchdowns during an injury-marred season in 2007. Urrutia played in 34 career games for the Cardinals, catching 130 passes for 2,271 yards and 16 touchdowns. "It's by far the toughest decision I've ever made," Urrutia said. "Unfortunately, with missing time this season and playing injured I got to see football from a different perspective. You only have so much time to play this sport, and the 2008 draft is my opportunity." Urrutia hoped to capitalize on a breakout 2006 season -- when he caught 58 passes for 973 yards and six touchdowns -- last year, but was troubled by a nagging leg injury that forced him to miss two games and limited him in others. Coach Steve Kragthorpe said he was "disappointed" in Urrutia's decision, adding he thought Urrutia would have benefited from returning for his senior year. - AP Sports

Mario Urrutia Scouting Report by Matt Gallo
Pros: Size, Jumping ability, Built like an NFL receiver, can become a defensive back when the balls up for grabs
Cons: Run Blocking, Takes plays off, Huge underachiever, Doesn't have solid hands, dropped passes, Route Running, Work ethic
Overall: Mario Urrutia was a huge disspointment this past season and really should have stayed in school another season. He is a huge underachiever who drops way too many passes and isn't really a team player. He does have the build of an NFL player though and theres upside for him in this league. Tall receivers in this league are becoming popular and Urrutia at 6'6 will make him even more intriuging. Its not fair to give him a grade now because the combine could give him a boost but right now the best he could hope for is an early 3rd round selection.

Football expert

Mario Urrutia, WR, Louisville
by Imran Tahir, 1/11/08. Urrutia has signed with an agent and entered his name into the 2008 Draft. Urrutia is big - very big at 6'6" - and has been quite productive for the Cardinals despite being hindered by constant injuries and new Cardinals coach Steve Kragthorpe's dismal offense. Urrutia has not been without fault; he is guilty of more than a few dropped passes and lapses in concentration. Nevertheless, with the graduation of QB Brian Brohm, the impending hire of a new offensive coordinator, the lingering possibility of yet more injuries, and the desire to provide for his infant son, Urrutia had good reason to leave school early. Workouts will carry enormous weight towards determining Urrutia's draft position; good performances could land Urrutia a mid-round Draft grade, with the outside possibility of a 3rd Round spot. Personally, I feel that this WR has a future in the NFL - remember folks, he is 6'6."

Draftcountdown

Strengths:
Has outstanding size and a huge frame...Very long arms and big hands...Is pretty strong...Terrific ball skills and body control...Decent leaping ability...Knows how to use his body...Sneaky deep speed and has been a vertical threat...A terror in the redzone...Very aggressive...Relatively productive....Probably still has some upside.

Weaknesses:
Not a great athlete...Lacks great speed...Not a very good route runner...Does not get much separation...Poor focus and concentration lead to drops..Won't do much after the catch...A marginal blocker...Does not play as physical as he should...Was never really the main focus of defenses...Has some character and maturity issues.

Notes:
As a redshirt freshman in the Cardinals high-powered offense he had the looks of a future early round draft pick....Regressed in 2007 and did not have a great year but opted to come out early anyway...He battled a turf toe injury as a junior...Has some pretty intriguing physical tools and is a much better player than his film from last year will indicate..Isn't nearly the pro prospect that his hype and media press clippings might lead you to believe but could be worth taking a late round flyer on

give me a minute - I just got in from lunch

anybody got anything on this guy?

Urrutia is going to fall big time because of character

the guy is like 6-6

Thanx CSMQB. I'll pontificate more on that scinereo when TB-3 comes out. BTW...wasn't TB-3 supposed to be out today? The suspense is killing me.

i found it..mario urrutia..he's a jr but is entering the draft..

can anybody tell me who his WR #7 was..maybe we should be lookin at him too..he looked good in the video..both QB and WR

I agree with Dave. I do think Brohm is the best QB in the draft, but I am not ballsy enough to mock him that way. Brohm was sacked about twice a game this year, the most ever, which was a big reason he sort of struggled, if you call 30 TD and 12 INTs "struggling."

You know who Matt Ryan is? Try Ryan Leaf. Or Heath Schuler. Yep.

hey master blaster..i like your scenario..and i like pickin up godfrey in the third..another one of my iowa boys..all in all..i think that would be a good situation

Keep in mind that alot of what you saw in the video is 3 step drops and screen passes (which by the way he can sell a screen as well as peyton manning in my book)

there are other videos that show him looking off the CB/S better than this, but again I am a homer on this

Good point Czar. I didn't notice that the first time. Still though, that can be taught so I'm not too entirely concerned.

Notice how he hits his recievers in stride. Those are not easy throws in those clips. He stays remarkably poised in the pocket too. One thing I didn't like in some of the Ryan highlights I saw is that he tends to start running out of the pocket before it even starts to break down, making it harder for his o-line to block. And his receivers always seem to be waiting for the ball. Like I said before, they are both good but I'd rather have Brohm, especially with the difference in thier draft positions.

Watching that video, I did not see Brian look off the primary reciever once (except for one scramble). In the NFL you have to make 3 or 4 reads very quickly, that is diff between NFL and College.

I have to add one more thing - I think he would be perfect for the Kansas City Community

He is a true Franchise QB on and off the field as far as I am concerned!

Ok - so here is my take on Brohm / and thanks for posting this Adam

I know he is not your guy

I wanted Brohm last year and was so disappointed that he went back for the final year. While that says alot about his character and Team Leadership I have to admit that I was pissed.

Did Brohm/Team have a bad season this last year - sure. But his comp % is high and he makes smart decisions. He steps up in the Pocket even under pressure. He keeps the chains moving in the 4th quarter even when nothing is open. High football IQ. Ect. ect. ect.
During this last year I saw the Chiefs going up the Draft board and Brohm going down. Even I realize that he is a reach where we currently are at.

It wasn't until I saw him falling into everyones 2nd round mocks that I started really pushing for him. I don't believe he will be there - but the question is......how many people here would take him in the 2nd if he is there?

Brohm's ball placement is the best I've seen out of college in a long while.

Dream Scienreo...

Ok, Adam has swayed me away from the Clady trade up. Im now a huge proponent of the TB-1. Now imagine this...

1st Ellis (mutant DT)
2nd Brohm (50/50 franchise QB)
2rd Baker (solid left OT)
3rd Godfrey (CB)
4th Franklin (WR)
5th Sullivan (C)

Ok...now we trade our 2nd and 4th pick in 09 and one of our 5th picks in 09 for Brohm. We play croyle all season while grooming Brohm. We then go on to have another crap season finishing in the bottom 10 (or what I like to call the "faders strategy"). We then go on to 09 draft and...

1st Oher (OT) (trade up sacrificing 1st and 3rd)

How sick would that be? I know, I know. Improbable to the point of being laughable. But a guy can dream cant he?

Oh, and since we are in dream land. Carl Peterson gets fired for his lackluster 08 decisions.
(Jury is still out on Herm...would someone get that man some time management training?)

Position: Quarterback
School: Louisville

Status: Senior

Height: 6-4

Weight: 225

40-Yard Dash: 4.95 (EST)

Positives:
Brohm has a very similar body type to Brady Quinn. He's tall and stands with poise. He moves well around the pocket and his patience allows plays to fully develop. He has speed and can be a threat on the ground if necessary, but also like Quinn, prefers to work with his arm rather than his feet.
His arm is as good as they come (just ask the MLB team that drafted him). He throws a great deep ball but more importantly, the majority of his passes have touch, making it easy for his receivers to pick up yardage after the catch.

Often forgotten is that Brohm has been under the microscope since high school. In 2002 he was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated as one the nations top young quarterbacks. Thus far he is unphased by the spotlight. He doesn't make the mind-bending mistakes that most young QBs tend to when under pressure. His calm and confident nature is the keystone to success as a QB in the NFL.

Negatives:
There are only two major problems on Brohm’s resume; injuries and touchdowns. Durability is a major question. Anyone looking at Brohm has to be concerned. In 2005 he tore his ACL. Despite the tear, he went through a Carson Palmer-like rehabilitation and was able to start the season opener for his Louisville Cardinals.
Just a few games into the 2006 season, Brohm broke his hand. The hand required surgery and he was forced to sit for a month.

Overview:
When healthy Brohm is one of the best play callers in the nation. He has a Tom Brady swagger with a Carson Palmer-like arm. He's big and strong and makes sound decisions for his team. However, he has a downside that the other top quarterback's don't and that's durability. He appears to be relatively fragile and that could scare teams away from taking him high in the first round of the draft.

Im falling back on The Blueprint 1...

1st Ellis (mutant DT)
2nd Brohm (50/50 franchise QB)
2nd Baker (solid left OT)

This would make me very very happy.

The Blueprint 2

1st Ryan (60/40 franchise QB)
2nd Baker(solid left OT)

This would make me very happy

Its all a matter of how many "very's" it illicits.

Has a great arm. Impressive and gaudy stats. Would be nice if he was still there in the second round. I doubt it. Plus isn't he injury prone? I heard that somewhere. Anybody?
