Kiper On Chiefs, Matt Ryan
Don’t shoot the messenger here, I’m just chatjacking Mel Kiper and passing along what he said about the Chiefs and Matt Ryan. From ESPN:
Brian(kirksville, MO): If the Falcons dont take Matt Ryan where does he fall? Does Kansas City pick him, the Ravens at 8 get him or does another team trade up?
Mel Kiper: If he gets past Atlanta, and I think they’d look at Dorsey if they don’t take him, then I think KC would have to take him. Is anyone sold on Croyle? I would take Ryan. If KC didn’t take him then it comes down to Baltimore. I think it would take 2 seconds for them to get the card up to the commissioner. They desperately need a QB. They have a new coach, a new coordinator. You have a whole new era beginning.

Kiper would take Ryan. This is one reason why Mel is a talking head and not running a NFL franchise.
March 26th, 2008 at 2:47 pmThe other reason is why would you run a team when you could make the same money with less traveling, stress and pressure with a cushy ESPN studio job? Don’t knock the hustle–Kiper may not know the Chiefs as well as we do or the brass does, but he knows the draft. Mel is damn good at what he does. The thing to take form this is not what the Chiefs will do, but that Kiper believes in Ryan, which is noteworthy.
March 26th, 2008 at 3:30 pmI think the key here is to watch the falcons like a hawk. They have 1st round pic above ours and now a 2nd round pick above and below ours. They also have similar needs to us in the form of QB and OT.
If the falcons take Ryan in the 1st then they will probably take Baker or someone like Baker in the 2nd right above us (where the OT depth might start to run out). In that case we will should take Ellis in the 1st and maybe Brohm in the 2nd (if the OT depth runs out).
alternately,
If the falcons take someone like Jake Long in the 1st we may be tempted to take Ryan. Because, if the falcons do take Jake Long in the first they are definately taking a favorite QB (probabaly brohm) in the 2nd and that would free up baker (last of the OT Depth) to us.
So im thinking myabe a Ellis/Brohm or Ryan/Baker depending on what the falcons do. Man I wish the falcons won 1 or 2 more games.
March 26th, 2008 at 4:21 pmCarl Nicks and Anthony Collins will still be available in the second, possibly third, round. With the Falcons, I honestly think that if they don’t go with Matt Ryan (or if he’s not available) they go defensive line next. Finding a good DT is a lot tougher than finding a good OT. And the Falcons had a pretty ratty defense last year, even before they dumped Grady Jackson. John Abraham’s getting old so they’ll need to add pressure from somewhere and there will be other offensive tackles to be had in round 2 or later…probably not dominant but likely solid enough to start. If Brohm’s available in round 2 and they don’t snag Ryan, I think they’ll probably take him before a tackle as well.
March 26th, 2008 at 5:40 pmI really like the idea of Matt Ryan first round Sam baker second round. i can’t remember where i heard this, it might have been from AA. It was a great point: why should we stick with a guy who had trouble beating out Huard.
March 26th, 2008 at 6:22 pmBill, the Matt Ryan-Sam Baker dream ticket did originate here, as it was the top option from The Blueprint 2. And that is a great point, one many Chiefs fans prefer to ignore.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:37 pmThe Falcons will draft Ryan if he’s there, and they stay there. Let’s end this conversation here. Adam, feel free to engrave this somewhere on the site, and if I’m wrong everyone can laugh at me later.
March 27th, 2008 at 12:01 amI will have to admit that no one is “sold” on Brodie, but I would hate to sell him before the Chiefs found out what he is worth.
March 27th, 2008 at 3:57 amI wouldn’t book that just yet KCMizzou.
At this point I am willing to say that C. Long will be gone no matter what.(even if he did fall the Raiders would never pass on him)
Next - it seems almost impossible to imagine Dorsey falling to us after his Pro Day. Both the Rams and the Falcons want him - and bad!
Lastly we have Jake Long - he could go to any of the top 4 teams so having him make it to us is a LONG SHOT (no punn intended)
I think at this point we have to assume those three are gone.
Other than Adam and maybe a few others - I believe we are all praying that the Falcons take Ryan. That pick right there will make or break us.
Here is my nightmare situation:
Miami - they decide to take Jake Long and right off the bat we are screwed
Rams - they jump at the chance to take Chris Long
Atlanta - can’t pass on Dorsey, will take a 2nd round QB because they have moved back up in front of the Chiefs
Raiders - take Ellis because of his ties to Kiffen
Chiefs - J. Long is gone, Dorsey is gone, Ellis is gone.
Sucks to be us - unless we trade with someone wanting McFadden
By the way - I am starting to think that Miami, Atlanta, and the Chiefs all pass on Ryan leaving him to fall to Baltimore - and I am not sure if they won’t just take Brohm
March 27th, 2008 at 9:42 amWalterfootball shows the following teams who, as a result of free agency activity and other factors, now have offensive tackle as a high priority (#1 or #2) need going into the draft:
Panthers - LT
Falcons - 2 OTs
49ers - RT
Rams - 2 OTs
Phins - OT
Pats - OT
Stillers - 2 OTs
Texans - LT
Donks - OT
Raiders - LT
Iggles - OT
Bears - 2 OTs
Pack - OT
I also believe the Giants ought to be included in this list considering the reportedly high level of interest they’ve shown in Cherilus.
Just a little something to mull over for those of you who are confident that OT talent will still exist by the time it’s out 2nd round pick.
March 27th, 2008 at 9:44 ammake that “our” 2nd round pick
March 27th, 2008 at 9:46 ami’m getting more and more friendly to the idea of drafting a QB early. I just wish it was another year with a QB that I thought was worth a top ten pick. In a lot of Ryan highlights his recievers are either not in stride or comming back to the ball. Whats up with that? He also threw some ugly Int’s. Personally I like Brohm in RD. 2. But if we do either, we still have a big problem at CB considering we will also use a 1st or 2nd on an OT. We can’t get a CB in rd 3 or later and EXPECT him to start. I think the best choices for us this year at CB are Patrick Lee, Brandon Flowers, and Cason. Lee might be there in 3, but the others shouldn’t be. This issue is one reason why we sould have picked up at least some OL or DB help through free agency.
March 27th, 2008 at 9:47 ambigchief13 - I totally agree with your last sentence.
March 27th, 2008 at 9:49 amIf Brohm goes at eight I will be more shocked than I have ever been on draft day. And I’m not saying don’t give Brodie a shot. You don’t play rookie QBs there first year, or at least until the end. He’d have a season…
March 27th, 2008 at 12:15 pmI was just getting your goat Adam
I do love Brohm in the 2nd for the Chiefs though!
If you ever do a post on him I found another good article yesterday

March 27th, 2008 at 4:10 pmI honestly do not see why most people have Ryan a whole round higher than Brohm. Talk about hype machine. A few months ago people were talking about Woodson going top ten. In my opinion there is no 1st round QB in this draft. I think that Ryan is good, but if I had to say who was better I’d go Brohm by a hair. Both early 2nd’s in my opinion.
March 27th, 2008 at 5:43 pmBigChief13 - I think you have it totally figured out.
Hey - lets hope that Miami or Atlanta buy the hype…that just means that someone else is left there for us!
Again - its not that Ryan is bad….its the fact that he is no better than Brohm/Henne/Flaco
