The Chiefs Cheaps Have No Heart…Er, Hartwig

AA FA UpdateJustin Hartwig is a Pittsburgh Steeler. Now, he signed relatively cheap, so that could mean, and likely does, that the penny-pinching Chiefs wanted to save money for their stadium renovation instead of signing him for anything more than peanuts. It also could just mean that Hartwig didn’t want to play for a 4-12 team and hike the ball to Brodie Croyle. Either way, we royally screwed up on a free agent center for the second time this offseason. Man, this one really has us livid. More from Pro Football Talk:

A year after signing center Sean Mahan as a free agent in the hopes that he would fill the void created by the retirement of Jeff Hartings, the Pittsburgh Steelers have added via free agency another new center, who might bump Mahan out of the position.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Steelers have agreed to terms with former Panthers center Justin Hartwig.  Per Schefter, it’s a two-year deal worth roughly $4 million, with a $975,000 signing bonus.

Other teams are doing redundant signings (Carolina, Oakland and San Francisco with receivers, Pittsburgh with centers, Cleveland with defensive tackles, etc…), and we aren’t signing anybody. I’m too disgusted to write any more, but the Chiefs’ free agent inactivity plus another development has prodded me to change up my blueprint a little. So, tomorrow The Blueprint 2 will drop. Here’s a teaser…

Hartwig is an older, oft-injured, average lineman. I don't know what the fuss is about. Faine was a miss, but at that contract, he definitely wasn't worth it. I want good players, not roster plug-ins. We've done that for too long.

my plan, trade our 1st round to cleveland for Quinn and there 3rd round (2nd?) and fill the Oline on the 2nd and third rounds. hopefully find a descent DT or Cornder along the way.

Steven: Good set of posts. Your best comment.... the hats! lol but seriously, I agree with you, evem about the hats.

On a side note...I really wish Herm would stop wearing those hats...

Good Point Blue, well put.  Desperation is setting in with the Chiefs faithful.  The mentality is slowing growing towards signing everybody and anybody that gets released from another team.  The player has to fit what Herm is wanting to do, he wants them in their second contract, I believe Pitts' will be his 3rd team now. Hartwig is 29 (not 26 like Herm would like) that is approximately 78 in football years.  And yes, three years is a huge difference in terms of body wear in the NFL.

You know, you kind of hit on something there in your post.  Maybe he didn't want to play for a 4-12 team.  Well, maybe non of them do, it does take two to tango you know.  Every year there are a handful of free agents that do take less money to play for a team they believe has a better shot at winnging...now.

Go read this article...http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/co... then ask yourself why you're "livid" that the Chiefs didn't sign a guy who will turn 30 this year and who just got cut from a 5-year $17M contract he only signed two years ago. The Panthers didn't even save any cap space by cutting him, they just wanted to be rid of him. This "spend spend, yay yay" thing is getting kind of sad.

He's an older mediocrity, and not what we should be looking at, so I'm gladPittsignd him. We signed one of those last year in McIntosh, a stop gap bum. We are Building, and that means with young players notshort term stop gaps like this.

Disappointing to lose out on him. I wonder if we made him an offer and for what.

last week i thought we should draft DRC if long was'nt available after hartwig signed for 4 mil 2 yrs i think that there's NO WAY we'll draft ANYONE at 5 i really think we'll just forfeit all our picks to save money been a fan for all my life and i'm just not seeing the direction all these players who could help going to other teams on the cheap

Somewhere Rudy Niswonger, Will Svitek, Tre Stallings and Herb Taylor are smiling.  While I am frowning.  Where is the O-line going to come from?

The Steelers signed Mahan at center last year . So at the very least they are adding depth . Who knows Hartwig may beat him out . Either way you have depth. But the real question is when are CHIEFS  going to sign any starters.  There is no way we draft 5 or 6 starters in one draft ... Im not sure what the depth charts look like right now , But but they cant be good on the O-LINE...
