Crane Damge (AA)
We want to welcome Eric Crane, our newest addition to the Arrowhead Addict staff. Eric has pretty extensive credentials when it comes to sportswriting and the field of sports in general, so he will be a great addition to the staff here. You have already seen his work, as he won the A.A. Hoody Giveaway with his masterful mock letter from King Carl to Chiefs fans. Eric will be doing a weekly feature called “Crane Damage,” and chipping in with his comments as always. Enjoy… (- Adam)

From Herm Edwards‘ press conference when he was hired with the Chiefs…he promised he wouldn’t change the offense.

“Q: You’ve been labeled a conservative coach. How do you approach this offense?”

Edwards: “Like I said before, it sounds like I’m conservative but as I keep saying it’s the players you play with. It might look conservative at times but I’m going to play to players’ strengths. I’m going to do that. These players on offense obviously have the ability to score. I’m not going to all of a sudden say you’re only allowed to score seven points a quarter. I’m not going to do that. I’m a football coach. I can coach anything that you give me: good players, great players, that’s what your job is as a coach.”

“Obviously, this offense has been prolific in the last three or four seasons. They can score points. I am not dumb. You don’t change things just to change. You don’t have to change. I think sometimes people would expect when a new coach comes in well he’s going to change this, he is going to change that. No, I am going to evaluate everything. Keep scoring 30 points I like that. That is a good thing.”

From the 2000, 2001, and 2002 drafts, only one player COMBINED is still on the team and he is on the way out…Greg Wesley
  • 2004 – Jared Allen
  • 2003 – Larry Johnson and Dustin Colquitt

5 drafts…4 players still on the team. Completely unacceptable.

I wasn’t a total Carl Peterson basher until now that I look back in time and really think about what’s wrong here and I gotta say it’s management. King Carl’s reign of terror is a moneygrab and needs to go. Take Herm with ya, Carl.

Agreed.  They blow.   HAHAHAHAHA only 7 points a quarter HAHAHAHAHA.  I’d kill for 7 points a quarter from this team.  Please Herm don’t slow’m down, this pace is blister’n.

The idea itself may not be flawed, but the logic certainly is.  You blame Carl because he doesn’t draft well, but you don’t give him any credit for the past two years drafts where we’ve only cut 2 of 14 players, for which he is just as responsible.  I’m sure Carl is near the end of his time with the Chiefs, but this team sucks because Dick Vermiel ruined it, with bad FA signings, and horrible drafts.  Carl certainly bears some of that responsibility. On the other hand the marked differences in drafting and FA acquisitions between Edwards and Vermiel shows that Carl has the philosophy of not interfering with his coaches too much.  The one time where we know he interfered we ended up with Larry Johnson, but he gets no love for stepping in on that one.  If you are going to criticize him I think his abrasive style in contract negotiations and his prolonged loyalty to Vermiel is fair game.  However, criticizing him for letting his coaches call the shots seems myopic.

  3. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

I like your moxy Crane, but I must say when Vermeil was light’n up the score board, we were all complaining about Defense.  Now, we complainin about Offense.  At this point we know our offense is sub par, and are defense is average.  It takes time.  I do not like Herm’s offensive philosophy, but I do think he could build a good play-off team here.  I am just surpised that we have not addressed our O-line at all in free agency.  I would like to see Herm for two more seasons.  Carl needs to go, bring in someone new or go with Kulrich, since he has made some good moves since being here.  Just my two cents.

  4. jay says:

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Steelers signed Hartwig.  That sucks.

  5. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

Hartwig signed a 2 year deal for 4 million.  That was peanuts!  Wow, what are we doing!  Well, maybe he did not want to sign with us.  Have we become the laughing stock of the whole entire league?

  6. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

Are we seriously considering Matt Ryan?

  7. Dave says:

Are we the laughing stock – yes!…..just ask Clayton – this last weekend he was having a good laugh at our expense saying "someone should let the Chiefs know that FA has started"…….And as for the question "are we seriously considering Matt Ryan"…..I am afraid the answer is yes…..both Carl and Herm was there watching him throw……..I know some want him – I don’t.

  8. Ian Brennan says:

right nowe any quarterback is bound to fasil in this system…..if we draft Ryan i will throw up….

  9. bigchief13 says:

Told you guys Hartwig would be a steeler.

  10. bigchief13 says:

Jay:  Vermeil’s free agent signings were not that bad.  Bell was, but he did bring in players who produced.  The reason we havn’t cut that many picks from the last two years is not because they were good picks, it’s because it’s only been two years.  We also don’t seem to have any other options especially if we don’t sign free agents.  We can’t cut the whole team.

  11. bigchief13 says:

At least Vermeil’s teams were fun to watch.

  12. Adam says:

People need to chill about Matt Ryan. Just wait for The Blueprint 2 to drop.

  13. Adam says:

And ouch on the Vermeil comment.

  14. jay says:

bigchief, I think its fair to say that the Jury is still out on these two drafts, but I think most of us consider them much better drafts than the Vermiel era.  As for FA’s, Vermiel brought in productive offensive players, but defense was a much different story.  My overall point is that Carl has lived and died with his coaches, and is not solely to blame if they fail.   We gave Vermiel 5 years to build a great O and promise a good D which he never delivered.  I think Herm should get at least one more year to build a great D, and try to build a good O.  I would even give him two years as long as some progress is shown, due to the mess Vermiel left.  It takes more than two years to make something out of nothing.   I’m a hell of a lot happier with his strategy than Vermiel’s, and I liked those teams, they were a blast to watch.

  15. jason says:

i think  we are so cheap that we"ll probably just forfeit all our draft picks all these fa’s who could help getting signed on the cheap and we pass on every one are we really going to spend the #5 money??

  16. Eric Crane says:

Loved that Vermeil comment bigchief…true, at least with Vermeil’s teams we knew we had a chance to win if we got some stops on D.  With Herm…each red zone possession seems like an excercise in hand-wringing and nail-biting.  Plus, if our team is being run like a business now…isn’t entertainment the goal?  I personally find touchdowns far more exciting than 13-10 games.

  17. Dave says:

Oh God, a "Herm said he wouldn’t change the offense" guy. Does anyone remember the first game Herm coached for the Chiefs? Where they kept running the same offense despite Willie Roaf’s retirement, and Trent Green ran for his life all game until he finally got his head caved in? Yeah, they should have stuck with that offense. That would have accomplished a lot.

  18. Bigchief13…are you serious? Dicky-V’s Loyalty to subpar players is why we spent useless dollars on players like Dexter McClown, and Shawn(maybe I should be a) Barber. Vonnie Holiday was miss used.  This team was sent into a tailspin thanks to Vermail and King Ralph’s (Carl) failure to realize how old the oline and the entire team was getting. And WTF was wrong with Vermeil’s drafting skills? Junior Siavii in the second round? Trading up to get Ryan Sims when everyone on the draft boards were saying Peppers made him look good. Or how about Snoop Minnis. I could go on and on. Dick failed us, and Carl needs to go!………………I like Herm’s philosophy in the fact that Championship teams build themselves through the draft. The only problem is we are in for a hell of a long ride before this team becomes respectable again. And since they are being so Cheap we can not fix our Oline, but we’ll draft unproven players that they hope makes a difference. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brodie and Huard end up like Trent in 2006. Broken and on the sidelines.

  19. bigchief13 says:

I don’t think Mcleon was ever a hyped up aquisition.  He played how I expecterd he would play.  I don’t think we broke the bank on him or anything.  We paid for an average corner and got an average corner.  It wasn’t like bringing in a Ty Law or anything.  Dick had good signings and also sub-par signings.  He signed players on the cheap who ended up as probowlers.  And I don’t think Vermeil even played a roll in the Minnis draft, but I can’t remmember for sure.  Siavii was an awfull pick you are right about that, and that ugly move to get Simms could not have been all Vermeil’s decision.  In comparison, I would not say Herman’s drafts have been much more outstanding.  A tad to early to say much, but as it stands right now I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bowe, Hali , and possibly Pollard as the only survivors from those two drafts.  Only time will tell.  Let us revisit this topic in 3 years when the playing field is even.

  20. jay says:

bc13, You think only three guys will be left?  I think that is a very low number.  K. Smith showed he’s a versatile back up at the very least.  Page did a respectable job in only his second year, Croyle hasn’t had a fair shot at all, Michael Allen will catch some balls and is good enough to be a second TE and could become as good as many starters in the league.  The two O-lineman we have no idea about, but Herb held his own when he was in.  Herm says Tank is already our best run stopper, and at worst Turk is a Jimmy Wilkerson.  With the little we know about most of these players, you could look at any team and make the same prediction.  You just have "chiefs suck" colored glasses.  I feel really bad for all you guys who agonize over all this stuff.  It sucks to watch the chiefs lose, but they haven’t lost yet this season, give em a break.

  21. bigchief13 says:

What are you going to say when they do lose this season?  By the way, all of those guys you have mentioned havn’t done a thing so far and if any do, I’ll be all for it.  I just don’t see it happening.

  22. jay says:

I’ve stated more than a few times on AA that I think Herm deserves three years, and I personally don’t count the first year because he was dealing with DV’s leftovers.  So as long as progress is shown this year, I’m still on board.  If they go 4-12 again I’ll join in the chorus (note you said when they lose,) but if they are 8-8, which I don’t see as very far fetched at all, I’m all for letting them see the plan through.  The only things that would get me truly upset now is if I saw them panic and divert from the plan.  If they don’t sign Jared Allen, if they start signing retreads before the draft, or if they make miserable choices in the draft I might get ticked.  So far none of that has happened, and they are doing exactly what they said they would do.  At the very least they are being honest with the fans.  They likely won’t be in the playoffs next year but in two years I think they’ll be there.  Since they are going about it the right way, they will be good for years.  If not I’ll eat my words, but if the chiefs fired coaches every two years we’d get nowhere.

  23. jay says:

I concede that Herm’s drafts are still up for debate, but Vermiel’s are not, whatever braintrust was responsible for the drafts during his five years was aweful.  Carl Peterson deserves some of that ire, but not because he called the shots, its that he allowed too many horrible choices.  In 38 picks 9 or 10 are backups somewhere, Larry Johnson was CP’s pick, Jared Allen was drafted to be a long snapper, and Derrick Johnson was a gimmie at 15.  So Vermiel succesfully chose a good maybe great punter (colquitt) and two starting LB (K. Mitchell, S. Fujita) in his time as the chiefs head coach.  That isn’t good drafting.

  24. bigchief13 says:

We will see.   I’ll give you some benefit of the doubt if at least two of those players that you had mentioned step it up this year and play respectably.  But again, I don’t see it.

  25. bigchief13 says:

I love pollard, but even he was absolutely lit up frequently last year.  So if he happens to regress or not improve this year, or say Hali goes out and posts a dismal 4 sacks or less, I would say that this debate swings a bit more in my favor.  Let’s see how the season goes.  And for the record, I in no way hope these things happen, Jay.  I hope you are right about things.

  26. jay says:

    Me too.
