And to address point #2, Law was what, 32/33 and comming off an injury when we got him, how long did we expect him to hold up? Having two old CB's and little in terms of future prospects, I think it would have been wise to invest a few CB picks in 2006 and 2007. I like Hali but when they read his name I do remember being pissed off as I was hoping for a Corner or WR.

I'm just saying those were the guys i wanted at #20 as I was watching the draft. Cromartie, Hill, Williams, and Jennings were all likely 1st rounders at CB in 2006. Williams fell, Jennings almost slipped out of rd 1, and Joseph snuck in. But it's not like the Chargers took a stab in the dark with Cromartie.

bigchief13 - Cromartie might have been nice, but at the time, there was no way to know that 1) he would become such a stud and 2) that Ty Law would fall apart as quickly as he did.

I like Hali, but would I draft hin at 20 now? Maybe. Some of the sucess he has had is a direct result of playing opposite the shit desturber known as Jared Allen. I really wanted us to take Jonathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie, or Chad Jackson. Good thing we didn't take Jackson.

I don't think it's as much not trying to land superstars as it is drafting football players over gifted athletes and workout warriors.

By the way, still no Hartwig news. Looks like he took his Gates to go. If he gets out of town there is no way we sign him with his gazillion scheduled visits. Better hope to hear some good news tomorrow morning.

Good point Adam. The 'best' player available has proven to be different in the Chiefs eyes the last two years than in most. But its provided us with 12 of 14 picks still on the roster, and 5 of those started last year. I really like their strategy of going for the solid starter rather than the potential superstar. Finding a superstar is more luck than anything, and you need 5 or 6 solid starters for every superstar on your team.

That theory works. The variable here, however, is what you determine a reach. The pundits considered Tamba a reach two years ago, while our brass did not. The book is still out, but it looks like it wasn't too bad of a reach at all. So, sometimes it is hard to say who truly is or isn't a reach. Especially without the resources NFL teams have.

The best player available theory seems to usually be the best bet. It seemed a little nuts when we picked LJ, but look how that turned out. I hate the whole idea of reaching.

No clue. This is typical, though. Teams often wait a while with lesser knowns and guys who were cut. They want to sign guys when it is a teams' market, not a players' one. I'll do some research.

Any word on Shane Olivea? I have looked everywhere and found nothing. What a weird situation and cut. He was just signed to a good deal in 06. He was manning the right side when LT #21 was going crazy on the league.
