Hackett/Hartwig Update

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: Rumors | COMMENTS: 22 Comments

AA FA UpdateThe Chiefs really botched this one. Man, did Arrowhead Addict fave D.J. Hackett sign on the cheap. I would have been fine with the Chiefs giving him another year and more money. From the Charlotte Observer:

D.J. Hackett is coming to Carolina.

The Panthers agreed to terms Monday with Seattle’s free-agent receiver on a two-year, $3.5 million contract.

Hackett improves the Panthers’ depth at the receiver position opposite Steve Smith. He is expected to compete with Muhsin Muhammad and Dwayne Jarrett for a starting spot.

The Panthers didn’t even have to guarantee Hackett a starting gig. Kansas City would have been a much better opportunity for him playing time-wise, but I digress.

The Chiefs Cheaps at least better redeem themselves by signing Justin Hartwig today, who they are currently meeting with. I agree with some of Steven’s points from this morning, but even if we don’t spend a lot of money we have to go out and sign new Chiefs as well. Hartwig is only 29, which is young for a center. Especially considering that he missed almost an entire year and was pretty old when he entered the league. Cross your fingers…

At that price Hackett would have been nice.  I read somewhere that Hartwig might sign with the Steelers, hope it’s not true.  It would be nice to get him and have more options in the draft.

  2. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

I heard Hartwig was in yesterday (Sunday), if we have not heard anything today, then it probably is no the greatest sign.  I sure hope the Chiefs know what they are doing.  :-(

  3. Zach says:

Yep. If a player leaves town it usually means they are going to look for a deal somewhere else.

  4. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

Max Starks, OT Transition Free AgentNo offers yetMarch 17: Starks has yet to receive any offers on the free agent market, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Starks appeared to be in line for a significant pay increase when the Steelers made him a transition free agent at a cost of $6.9 million in 2008. If Starks finds a buyer, it forces the Steelers to ante up if they want to keep him, or lose him without compensation.

  5. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

Well, gentleman, it all boils down to this:  THE CHIEFS EVIDENTLY THINK THAT THE PLAYERS THEY CAN TARGET IN THE DRAFT WILL BE BETTER THAN ANY PLAYERS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET.  Since they have had some good drafts under Herm, I will give them some "lee way".   But I am absolutely scared of another sub-par season.

  6. Adam says:

Obviously, we don’t think Starks is worth that kind of money. Or maybe we will ante up later on down the road when we don’t have competition. At this point, the money is drying up for most other teams. I wouldn’t be surprised if we had the most cap room in the league at this point, which pretty much infuriates me, but oh well…

Not really in line with the topic but felt inclined to post this. John Clayton named his top 5 Free Agents still available. Who was number 5? Kris Wilson. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=3297724

  8. merlinnj says:

I do think we need a vet signing on the O-line. Hartwig is the type of player that fills the bill for us. His agent, though, is one of those ’show me the money’ types. Does anyone know what they are asking for him?

  9. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

Adam, I am with you.  I am mad as hell too.  We have done didly squat on our O-line.  Maybe Hartwig and Shane Olivea will still be available after the draft when the Chiefs realize they missed out on the o-line help they wanted….( Remember last year when they said they were going to draft a CB for sure, and it did not happen).  :-(

  10. Adam says:

Well, the problem with waiting for the draft is that we have a lot of holes. We’d be stupid, for instance, to pass on a Chad Henne in round three for a CB or OG who doesn’t have the chance to make nearly the same impact (if we don’t pick a QB earlier). The good teams go with the flow of the draft, not vice versa. Reaching is always bad. I think we should take the best player available in every round with our current roster. That could leave some holes.

  11. Adam says:

I have no idea what Hartwig is asking. Probably $3 or so million a year, but maybe less. I doubt he can ask much more given his somewhat injury-riddled past. We’ll see. If we don’t hear anything by late tonight, early tomorrow, then he got out of town. The Chiefs work slow, but not that slow. I think we have an advantage given that he played at KU. A considerable one. He was born in Minnesota and played high school ball in Des Moines, so I’d guess that this is one of the places he’d love to end up.

  12. Adam says:

John Clayton is on crack. Kris Wilson is worthless, and I used to be the guy’s agent. I’m done believing that he will ever be anything.

  13. Jeremy (Riverside, CA) says:

Any word on Shane Olivea?  I have looked everywhere and found nothing.  What a weird situation and cut.  He was just signed to a good deal in 06.  He was manning the right side when LT #21 was going crazy on the league.

  14. Adam says:

No clue. This is typical, though. Teams often wait a while with lesser knowns and guys who were cut. They want to sign guys when it is a teams’ market, not a players’ one. I’ll do some research.

  15. bigchief13 says:

The best player available theory seems to usually be the best bet.  It seemed a little nuts when we picked LJ, but look how that turned out.  I hate the whole idea of reaching.

  16. Adam says:

That theory works. The variable here, however, is what you determine a reach. The pundits considered Tamba a reach two years ago, while our brass did not. The book is still out, but it looks like it wasn’t too bad of a reach at all. So, sometimes it is hard to say who truly is or isn’t a reach. Especially without the resources NFL teams have.

  17. jay says:

Good point Adam.  The ‘best’ player available has proven to be different in the Chiefs eyes the last two years than in most.  But its provided us with 12 of 14 picks still on the roster, and 5 of those started last year.   I really like their strategy of going for the solid starter rather than the potential superstar.  Finding a superstar is more luck than anything, and you need 5 or 6 solid starters for every superstar on your team.

  18. Adam says:

I don’t think it’s as much not trying to land superstars as it is drafting football players over gifted athletes and workout warriors.

By the way, still no Hartwig news. Looks like he took his Gates to go. If he gets out of town there is no way we sign him with his gazillion scheduled visits. Better hope to hear some good news tomorrow morning.

  19. bigchief13 says:

I like Hali, but would I draft hin at 20 now?  Maybe.  Some of the sucess he has had is a direct result of playing opposite the shit desturber known as Jared Allen.  I really wanted us to take Jonathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie, or Chad Jackson.  Good thing we didn’t take Jackson.

  20. John says:

bigchief13 – Cromartie might have been nice, but at the time, there was no way to know that 1) he would become such a stud and 2) that Ty Law would fall apart as quickly as he did.

  21. bigchief13 says:

I’m just saying those were the guys i wanted at #20 as I was watching the draft.  Cromartie, Hill, Williams, and Jennings were all likely 1st rounders at CB in 2006.  Williams fell, Jennings almost slipped out of rd 1, and Joseph snuck in.  But it’s not like the Chargers took a stab in the dark with Cromartie.

  22. bigchief13 says:

And to address point #2, Law was what, 32/33 and comming off an injury when we got him, how long did we expect him to hold up?  Having two old CB’s and little in terms of future prospects, I think it would have been wise to invest a few CB picks in 2006 and 2007.  I like Hali but when they read his name I do remember being pissed off as I was hoping for a Corner or WR.
