Stray Arrows: Homecoming For Hartwig?
The Chiefs need a center. C Justin Hartwig now needs a team. Hartwig went to Kansas. KU is about 30 minutes away max from Arrowhead. Hmmmm…
The Carolina Panthers cut Hartwig today (hat tip: A.A. commenter Jeremy), and considering he’s only 29 he seems like an ideal fit for us. From Panthers.com:
The Carolina Panthers have released center Justin Hartwig, the team announced Tuesday. Hartwig started the first 15 games in 2007 but suffered a knee injury versus Dallas on December 22 and ended the year on injured reserve.
The knee injury was just a sprained MCL, and he seems to have completely recovered from the groin injury that sidelined him for most of the 2006 season. Prior to that he started all but one game for the Tennessee Titans over the course of three years. Hartwig says that his injuries are behind him:
“With a full offseason of training, especially with my legs and getting all my strength back, I think I’m going to have a bigger and better season this year,” he said.
Hartwig was released to pave the way for second-year center Ryan Kalil, a second-round draft pick a year ago that many expected to go a round earlier. I think we absolutely have to take a look at Hartwig.

We need a starting center. At least bring him in for a look. Come on Petersen!
March 11th, 2008 at 3:57 pmThis is the type of event I think the Chiefs are looking for. A vet gets cut, and we take a look. Although he is older than what Herm outlined, I think we should take a look at him.
March 11th, 2008 at 4:04 pmI think you can go a little older O-line-wise, and almost need to. 29 isn’t that old (I hope not, anyway, that’s my age!)
March 11th, 2008 at 4:08 pmAdam: Well, I am in Vinnie Testeverte’s age group. lol Are your knees starting to creak? lol
March 11th, 2008 at 5:16 pmThey don’t creak, but I’ve had surgery on both of them, so…I’m an old 29, let’s just say!
